SLGH009 - The Latest Hi-beat Movement and Ever-Brilliant Steel.

The watch pays homage to the famous 44GS from 1967 whose design was the first ever expression of the uniquely Japanese Grand Seiko Style which, ever since, has been its visual signature. It features the high-beat watch powered by the revolutionary Caliber 9SA5, which offers a power reserve of 80 hours thanks to its enhanced energy efficiency.
It is offered as the case and bracelet material is Ever-Brilliant Steel and the movement is specially designed with tempered screws to mark the 55th anniversary of 44GS.
A dial inspired by the stars
The SLGH009 dial has a depth and a texture that attract the eye and take the imagination upwards towards the sky at night. The deeply etched pattern is that of the elliptical orbit of the stars as they move across the heavens and it captures the serene passage of celestial time with its flowing, unbroken lines.

With its highly efficient Dual Impulse Escapement, Grand Seiko free-sprung balance and twin barrel construction, Caliber 9SA5 delivers a precision rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day and a power reserve of 80 hours. The caliber represents the very finest in modern watchmaking, combining unique and advanced technologies with craftsmanship of the highest order.
When seen through the sapphire case back, different textures are seen to be in harmony. The side of the movement has a matte finish and a subdued tone that absorbs the light whereas the ridges, edges and screw holes are sharply cut and polished to a brilliant finish that sparkles with precision. Great video. Got the SLGH009 a few days ago and I love it. My first GS I waited years before pulling the trigger. Dial and case way above Swiss or German counterparts of the same price. Bracelet not so much fortunately it fits my wrist perfectly. Movement decoration is more than what I expected for the price point but with regards to accuracy I was expecting better (+4 secs a day). Will wait and see after I wear it for a while. The Zaratsu polish is of another level. I have a Lange 1 and a Patek 5960 and I'd say overall finishing is way up there with the big boys. Thanks for the review it was a big help in coming up with the decision. 🙏

Beautiful watch. My local AD show this one tome but ended up with the SLGA009 (no regrets).. I did however just get my hands on a SLGA007 “Lake Suwa” and had to snag it while I could. Great review!

Great review! Am I the only one that is wondering why Grand Seiko has decided to go from pricing their watches at around $6000 up to $10,000? Just when they started gaining momentum and Rolex cases are sitting empty, they are pricing themselves out of the market.

I paid about $5,000 for the Snowflake. $10,000 is out of my ballpark. I would like to get a hi beat, but GS has priced me out. That was why GS was so great. You got a great watch at a reasonable price. The Rolex cases are completely empty. I couldn’t get a ladies Datejust for my wife, that I promised her. I called another AD near me and he said he will get me one for a few thousand dollars more than retail. I guess my wife won’t get her watch.

The new $10,000 watches are only the ones with the new movements, and there are about 4 models. They still make many more models of $5k-$6k watches with the older movements.

@@Richie_P The new Tudor blackbay chrono is $5,200. It has the Breitling Chrono movement. Price is right. I don’t have a Chrono. Problem is none in stock. AD’s are selling them at a premium price.

Totally agree. For me GS was all about the bang for the buck. I have zero interest in them at the current price points. More bang for your buck elsewhere. Plus for the price range, the watches are unbalanced slabs on the wrist, way too thick.

@Itsasplinterstephen Don't drink the koolaid. Remember the luxury watch market is largely a confidence scam. If you want to treat yourself to something that is gorgeously handcrafted, priced fairly per craftsmanship, time and material, AND will actually be noticed! Invest in bespoke shoes. Way #$%@ cheaper, much cooler, and its typically the first thing people notice about you. Luxury watches are a huge mistake.

I have a White Birch hi beat. In fact, I'm on my second one. The 1st one ran +9 seconds a day. At the price and their claim of +5, I took it back for an adjustment. They wanted to send it back to Japan. I didn't want to wait 2 months, so I suggested a replacement would be the best way to solve it. I got it today. Hopefully, this one is accurate. I've heard of others with the same problem. Any one else find theirs didn't meet the specifications?

Keep it. It's because of the hi-beat movement. Supposedly more accurate but who cares. You buy it for that smooth sweep. I sent mine to Japan it's still 10 seconds fast. Again who cares.

Rather than orbit texture inspired, the dial is closer to growth ring found on plain-sawn wood.

Agreed. And telling since this dial texture was originally rotated horizontally and produced in brown for SLGA008, specifically to depict wood. I think they went a bit overboard or lazy with their "nature of time" symbolism to recycle this one as stars.

Can’t agree more with this. I was close to pulling the trigger on either the SLGA008 or the SLGH007. Both dials depict the ‘natural beauty of tree rings’, yet the dial pattern now describes the sky and orbital stars? Bizzare use of marketing talk. At a price point of around $50k, I wanted to see the watches before purchasing but was told that since they would need to be ordered from Japan I would need to pay up front for the watch. That was too much of a risk so I declined….and how glad am I that I did! I would be furious now if I’d have dropped the $50 on a limited edition watch, to then discover that GS releases 2 more watches with the same dial pattern for $10k. I have purchased 3 GS watches and really enjoy wearing them. The original White Birch (not Spring Drive or Green Birch :-) is a great watch driven by a wonderful movement….shame the dial has been slagged out on a rinse and repeat factory line. Very disappointed in the way GS repeat their use of dials in the way they do. I will not buy anymore until they alter this strategy.

@Itsasplinterstephen I guess it’s why I’m not a Rolex fanboy either. My first and only is 12 year old Submariner. It’s a beast of a watch and am very fond of it, however I’ve never had the urge to buy another Rolex. The main point is that GS are releasing limited edition watches and then later using the dial pattern in regular production watches. It dilutes the scarcity of tue supposed limited edition watch.

@Itsasplinterstephen my white birch was sent back to Japan (local dealerships here are not yet proficient on tue new movememnt). The watch was gaining 15 seconds every day. Hopefully they will fix this and return the watch to my wrist.

For that price, I’d rather get a Cartier santos…. Comes with easy link adjustment and quick strap removal…. GS needs to up their bracelet game. Especially they are priced near with the big boys…. But their dial designs and zaratsu finish is really one of a kind! if they ever make a incredible bracelet design like, Vacheron Overseas, AP Royal Oak, Nautilus…. They will definitely go far.

Remember playing video games in the 90’s and they reused the same bosses but with different colors and more hit points? That’s what GS does with their dial faces and it’s annoying. This is the same as the one that was inspired by wood grain over a year ago. Pick your favorite GS face and I guarantee they’ve reused it with a different backstory. They just turned the white birch 90 degrees and now it’s inspired by the frozen ponds near some factory. 5:00 is an accurate depiction of this watch because you cannot see any of the texture unless you shine a flashlight directly at the perfect angle. Obviously I’m not the only one losing interest in GS because only 550 made yet they are still available on the GS boutique 3 weeks after release. This one is a dud. An overpriced dud too.

Guys complaining about GS pricing.... please don't forget this uses a completely new updated movement, the first revision to the 9S in their history. Stop complaining, it is getting silly at this point. You can't afford it go elsewhere.

Disagree. GS has lost their minds on pricing. Once you move past the fact that as a luxury watch owner you're the victim of a confidence scam; you might seriously start shopping the high horology brands and find you can get triple barrels with 100+ hours reserve in sub 9mm thin watches for this same price range. Still a foolish, foolish way to spend roughly 11k. As they say a fool and his money will soon part. But.... its your money. Do what you will.

@@CosmicPipe They may be beaten by others in terms of tech specs. Wow yippee yay. I buy a watch purely for the looks. The aesthetics. There's nothing bar maybe a Philip Dufour that can get close. I find even Lange boring. And Patek? Don't make me laugh. Longines should sue their asses for design theft.
