I'm kind of tired hearing youngsters talk about how the controls on the Intellivision were bad... they did require more brain cells to be utilized, granted, but they didn't fail more often than any Atari Joysticks... I used to repair both of them in my teens and actually made good money out of that, and I have to say I made more money out of repairing the Atari's than the intellivision's. Now, regarding the use of the keypad and side buttons during gaming, those gave many of the games (not all of them) the complexity level that Atari games were lacking off... just having a stick and one button is not enough for more complex games... - in Football you could program plays and make your team do whatever you like either during Offense or Defense - in Dungeons and Dragons you could fire your arrow while running off from the dragons in any direction (usually you would change the direction and shoot the arrow on a different one) - in Tron deadly discs, you could take care of many enemies while doing other stuff at the same time and also having the liberty of playin in different directions which would mean a more complex brain processing and it would be endless to explain the benefits while playing Soccer, Baseball, skiing, or many other games being designed... just keep in mind that these days a PS4 or XBOX controller has over 8 buttons and three different direction pads/joysticks, why do you think that is if not to add to the games the complexity they require? But this is something only one who actually lived through it will know and understand, most people who wasn't there playing it in the 80's with three brothers and a ton of friends will never understand.

I'm a so called ''youngster'' (26yo) and i agree with your statement. Sure the controller is ass when looking to todays standards. But it certainly is not ''unplayable'' i happen to own a Colecovision (wich is better then Intellivision btw haha) and i don't mind the controller, it is just different then we are used to today. I'd imagine, in the 70s and 80s there was really no standard for controllers. I mean, look at the Odyssey controller.. Atari indeed (however i respect the console, being released in 1976 or 77 (not sure) ) they where the first. Intellivision and Coleco where ahead of time with their complex controllers and more complex (and more fun) games. I really want an Intellivision to, i like the 2nd gen of videogames and consoles. So simple, yet so fun. You used to repair the controllers you say, how'd you do that without the internet to guide you? Did you lend books from the library? Where you studying on computerhardware? Or did you just open 1 up one day and thought, ''heey this is pretty easy''. Interested to know :D

The Intellivision is the best! The controls are a little finicky if you're not used to them. You should play The Dreadnaught Factor, He-Man, Kool-Aid Man, Dracula, Swords and Serpents, and Thunder Casle. There are so many good games for it.

1) BEST. INTRO. EVER. 2) I also love my Intellivision... it was the first console I ever owned at the age of about 6. I remember seeing it on top of my parents' wardrobe a few weeks before Xmas, asking what it was, and being told it was an 'answering machine'. Fool me once, shame on... um... well... 3) Great video dude. Thanks for cheering me up.

I recently acquired an original 2609 model Intellivision. During the 80s I had the off-white, lower cost Intellivision II. The original with the gold and the dark plastic and the wood veneer actually seems very reminiscent of a form of gentleman's hobby game that would be welcome in a study or gaming den. Propped atop a padded velvet wrapped tray and some scotch in glasses to initiate an evening of gaming. Name your game, gents, and prepare to be trounced.

I loved the Intel disc controller. People used it wrong. They used it like it was D-pad, it wasn’t. The best way to use it since it was a 16 directional controller was to rest your thumb on the disc and just side your thumb around on the circular disc pressing gently down in the direction that you wanted to move on the screen.

Nice video. The Intellivision the console I collect for since I grew up playing it at my grandfather's house. Just a few other games I recommend: Frog Bog - Be a frog that leaps for bugs to eat, fun, silly, easy to pick up, a great party game or game to introduce non-gamers to the Intellivision. MLB Baseball - a modestly easy game to play that uses the numeric keypad well. It requires 2 players. World Championship Baseball is a later version that added a 1-player mode. NFL Football - a more complex game that takes advantage of the numeric, keypad, a 2 player game, be sure to have the manual and playbook. Super Pro Football is a later version that added a 1-player mode. Mission X - A top-down view airplane game where you shoot and bomb targets, easy to play. Microsurgeon - Go inside the human body and fight diseases, quirky fun, 1 player, easy to play after a quick gloss-over of the manual. Hover Force - Fight enemy helicopters and put out fires, top-down view, gloss over the manual and then easy to play, great cut-scenes for an early 1980s game.

Way back when, joystick replacements were available for the discs on the controllers (not from Mattel of course). While theoretically preferable to the discs, the lack of spring resistance underneath them made 'em worse than the discs, so I went back to sore thumbs.

Great vid as always top hat man, called it 16 bit is probably a little misleading, yes it had a 16 bit processor however not as we would come to know them with using the Motorola 68000 in later years. Prob best referring it to a 2nd generation console and leaving it at that. Great song at the end 🐤🐤🐤🐤

It is a 16 bit system though, so he couldn't call it an 8 bit system. It's just an early 16 bit system. The Turbo Grafix and PC engine were 8 bits as well, even though it was graphically superior than other 8 bit consoles.

Yes, the Intellivision Console was a revolutionary machine of its day, from the sleek console to the revolutionary design keyboard controller. Cheers for the vid you Mad-Hatter! I find myself agreeing with every word. I think that much like the Atari VCS, the intellivision's probably too simple to appeal to modern gamers. Personally I have fond memories of both systems, they were my childhood and the box-art on the early 70's and 80's games was amazing! But the bottom line is this stuff appeals mostly to the nostalgic gamer like me, or to the curious gamer and collector. It's a shame I know, but it's true. Only rabbid collectors and completionists really bother with this stuff these days. Anyway, I'm slowly but surely building up a solid collection of games for my beloved intellivision. Myself, I only really collect stuff I missed out on or couldn't afford back in the day (Ahem Neo Geo). Most of the sports games are good fun too - but you WILL need 2 players as most don't have 1 player game options (sad but true). Also, there are some really solid gems on the system. I recommend these: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons : Cloudy Mountain (Treasure of Tarmin is really good too, if a little plodding), Demon Attack Night Stalker Space Hawk Lock 'N Chase Tron Deadly Discs Venture (possibly superior to the Colecovision version, as the controls aren't broken) Space Battle (or the superior Space Spartans - both Star Raiders rip-offs!) And... If you have money to burn... Pac Man Dig Dug (These are both amazing versions courtesy of Atari-soft!) Tower of Doom (unnoficial 3rd AD&D Game which defies belief on the system) Apparently Burger Time and Bump & Jump are must haves too, but I don't have either, so I can't personally recommend them. Bottom line is, if you ARE interested in the system, then try one of the emulators available (Intellivision Lives! was released for several systems, including Playstation 2 AND IT'S DIRT CHEAP!). Although do bear in mind that you'll be missing out on a 'proper' intellivision experience without these unique control pads. DO AVOID the shoddy flashback console! You're far better off picking up an original system and job lot off of Ebay (or elsewhere) these days. Just make 100% sure that the master component is working, as they're a little flakey tbh and there's a lot of people who'll claim they don't have a powerlead to test the system, in the hope of fobbing these off. So be warned. @Fur Q - You are hilarious! That comment had me in stitches!!

Dig it out of your parents closet! It probably still works, the machines are very solid for being 30+ years old. Many new - new - games have come out in the last few years from the independent and homebrew development scene. Excellent licensed ports like Boulderdash, purely innovative titles like Christmas Carol, and more come out at a clip of 3-7 per year for the last several years. Even a new Intellivision RPG style of game - The Minstrel's Legend - is due out in 2017 (shameless plug). Find your console! :)

Both are good consoles in their own right. Most (not all) of ataris games where fairly straight forward and simple to play. Where as alot of intellivisions games where more complex. For example a number of atari space games like xevious for example where "fly and shoot everything" games where as on the intellivision take space battle for example you had to send out squadrons and strategically take out the enemy. Im not saying one is better than the other here, im saying some times you want simple and and some times you want complex. I had both as a kid, and still do, in fact i just got my kids hooked on them last weekend lol. Its actually amazing to me that my 12 year old daughter who loves pokemon and minecraft spent most of the weekend switching between the atari, intellivision, and nes. And my 4 year old is enjoying some of the games like strawberry shortcake and sesame street games. Ahh good times

All you need is a PC and you can download the emulator of each of these consoles. You have access to image disk of each game cadridge on different web sites. Nice collection but that doesn't make sens to own all this just for playing old games.

This was my first console. I agree about the controls they are shit. We had three consoles in total. The remotes broke on two (one from use and the other was juice) we bought two new and one from a guy in the paper. It was a very popular console in my area. Before the Nintendo I knew about 15 people with one. I only knew one person with an Atari and one person with a coleco. Tron, D&D and Utopia are a few of my favourites on the Intellivision.

What I find interesting is the most of the time, the superior system often sells worse than its inferior counter part. Atari over Intellivision, NES over SMS, PS1 over Saturn, PS2 over Xbox, Gameboy over GG......Some of these systems where closer than others, nobody an say the Atari or NES had superior graphics over their counterparts (may have had more quality games)

The only difference in the PS4 and the XB1 is the PS4 has more Japanese games since Xbox doesn't sell in Japan. But that doesn't really matter because we know that the majority of the dudebro console gamers won't touch those games anyhow. Never had one of these or an Atari. I got stuck with the Odyssey 2 and it's Atari knock off games.

As someone who owned an Intellivision back in the day (it's actually in my basement in working condition), I would say "no". Maybe the only exception being the biplane game in Triple Action, possibly 2 player Sea Battle. One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough in Intellivision videos: how the side buttons (most often used to fire) were MURDER on your fingers/thumbs. Literal blisters if you played for more than an hour.
