Great explanation! Basically, Harden exploits the rule that makes most of the 2-step layup legal. Without 0 step rule, all those fast-break dunks probably will be travel

Most NBA players travel nowadays. They pick up their pivot foot all the time, establish a new puvot foot, and then travel again.

It's not a travel in the NBA because the NBA uses the 0 step. High school & NCAA don't incorporate the 0 step in the definition of a travel. You should clarify that this is not currently a legal move in any league other than the NBA.

" This video has really helped me understand the zero step and "gather." If I may... I wish you followed through a little more. 9ver and over you demonstrated the gather and then just stopped. It was confusing for a beginner because I didn't understand what happened just before and just after.

Thanks for going over it. The way I was taught is the pick up the ball stuff and stepping is when you are heading towards the basket for a layup. It all still loooks like travelling to me watching Harden. But I'm old, hahaha.

But, this zero step was implemented in the NBA in 2009, so I can see why people can see it as a travel. It's not a travel.in the NBA because they altered the rules. But, in basketball it is a travel.

The NBA refs are much different from high school and rec league officials. Those amateurs call stuff based on the two step rule. A pro ref wouldn't call most pros for travelling. These guys practice 8-10 hours a day everyday on moves, shots and dribbling to perfection.

I started playing basketball in 1995, I call it travel. BUT US basketball evolves, I don't ref any pick up games, so I can do as much back steps as I want, and get away with it because they are amazed of my step back travelling technique. I always die laughing inside on how ridiculous the rules are nowadays.

It seems to me like it’s picking up a pivot foot a couple times. As soon as both of your hands touch the ball one foot is still on the ground and then you step two more times.

As long as you're talking about J-Will moves that look sketch, I'd like to see a breakdown of that dribble/hop step/pass fake/continue dribbling move from his rookie year. I know it was probably all about the next dribble hitting the floor before landing from the hop, but still not sure how that keeps him safe from a travel.

The way you explaine it and demonstrate it, makes sence. But when I see JH do it, the positioning of his hand is (most of the time) off. But its really hard to call cuz its hard to notice the hand positioning when dribbling and a lot going on during the game

When your first foot lands it establishes your pivot, placing your other foot down doesn't count as a step if u stop your motion then and there. This means that technically for some of these you're only taking one step then stopping.

BUT, when this dude is showing in slo-mo Harden's step back, his hand is already UNDER the basketball, that's a travel according to him and NBA rules

Im not buying it, There is a reason that carrying and travelling are (used to be ) rules. The game is broken if you let players stop and start dribbling and walk.. Side of the ball is a carry, Stopping momentum of the dribble and restarting is a carry... This is just exploiting a loophole created in the early 2000's when the NBA loosened the rules to allow AI and JWill etc to carry a little bit to get those ohh ahh streetball crossovers in NBA highlight reels.. Now that carry is being used as a "zero step" to give players an extra step... I never heard the term "zero step" until people tried defending JH step back... Your "gather step" is what establishes your pivot foot....

It's definitely a travel. When both hands hit the ball the pivot foot is established, and then he re-establishes with his back foot...if you leave your pivot foot you have to shoot the ball before you hit the ground again. Definitely a travel.

I know this is mad late. But it is a perfect video explaining the gather/0 step and it's effect on when your steps start to count. People think a dribble stops after the ball has not hit the floor. But as long as your hand is not under the ball, (or 2 hands on it and not palming) you are, in fact, still dribbling. Going to the rim it looks natural. He just goes away from the rim so it's awkward.

When Coach K. wanted to prepare his NBA squad to play in the Olympics he had referees use real rules. there were 6 travelling calls in the first half and none of the NBA players knew what they did wrong. As soon as you have a 2nd hand on the ball, you don't get to take a step and land. You can take a step (or 2) if driving to the hole, but you have to let it go or pass it before you land.

Actually, this is a good explanation of how recent rule changes in the NBA (the hand positioning on the ball piece esp), which were of course meant to help the offense and increase scoring, have had an impact on the game. So basically, a lot of Harden's step back 3s that LOOK like travelling actually are not based on those rule changes. However, and as you briefly eluded to, he still does travel... and to be honest probably on at least 25% of those shots... but the refs don't call it because, 1) they dont see clearly enough or 2) the Harden factor is in play (meaning, his entire game clearly gets blatant preferential treatment from the zebras... Harden recently eclipsed Lebron James to become the "leader" for this dubious distinction). Now, with that out of the way, could you please do a video explaining why Harden's blatant offensive fouls are almost never called as such? If you watch him closely, he uses his non-dribbling hand to literally shove the defender a few feet away, given them a choice of giving him an uncontested shot or likely getting a defensive foul called for either bumping him or not giving him room to land. This blatant cheat move is by far the most egregious in the history of sports! Not only does he do it (and get away with it) multiple times per game, but on many of them, he commits this foul multiple times. Last night vs GS in game 4, he literally committed 3 offensive fouls and traveled (none called of course) during 1 shot attempt and ended up not only scoring a bucket that should have never even been taken, but also got a +1 foul on the GS defender. This joke is frankly making the NBA unwatchable. So, would really like to hear an explanation on why you think they are allowing him to do this. btw, if it were actually legal, everyone would be doing it right? but aside from Lebron, Chris Paul, the greek freak and a few others, you dont see it, at least not nearly to the ridiculous degree that JH does it.

There was time when I would swear by the NBA officials word. Now, I know they're biased because they're paid to be. Every year they openly talk about how they're changing officiating and their interpretation of the rules. Every year they do this to increase scoring. Which in turn, increases ratings and then increases revenue. It's about ONE thing, $MONEY$.

When done right it’s not a travel , but Harden has both hands or a hand halfway under the ball when he does it quite a bit I’ve noticed . Never gets called . Refs rarely call travel anyways , but I have noticed it in some of his best highlights 😂

Anything more than 2 steps off a dribble is a travel. Off a pivot second step is a travel. How would you do a step back from a spin? Because moving your pivot foot becomes a travel. Basically it would be similar to a fadeaway. But if the ball remains in the motion of a dribble as you spin and have both feet land in 0 position. Can you take the extra 2 steps step back?
