As the title states here is what you need to know about the Jeep grand Cherokee with the V6 and 8Speed auto. I love this thing, and I would say its reliable. It needs Money though!

Just a heads up for your viewers- thermostat housing cracks is a common thing and super easy fix with a $28 part and quick you-tube video, but make sure you order the redesigned beefier unit to avoid having the same problem down the road. They reinforced the plastic at the bend,so the difference is visible. Also, for those who live in areas with bright hot sun, make sure to treat and protect the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield. Besides fade, it becomes brittle and cracks. Door hinges fail and stop holding the door open. Ask my left lower leg how I know. Still, it's actually been a great vehicle overall, and the only vehicle I've ever owned that I'm still in love with. At 7 years old, it's also the longest time I've ever kept a vehicle. One last thing- from personal experience. Not all WK2’s are good or bad. Some owners get lucky, and have very little issues over very many miles, other owners aren't lucky at all and get one that has nothing but issues. That, my friend, IS a "Jeep Thing"

I purchased a new GC Laredo 3.6 in February 2014, now have 116,400 miles. The only issue I had was replacing the motor mounts. In 2021 we drove from florida to California and back. So I must be one of the lucky ones. I do keep up with the maintenance schedule.

LJ, I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee Laredo and have never experienced that transmission issue. I have had to replace my transmission mounts, oil filter housing (more preemptive to ensure the original plastic housing does not crack), rack and pinion and ignition coils and that is all. I have performed more but they have been for performance =, not repairs. I add an intake system, performance ignition coils and plugs, my brakes and a few others items but no issues with it. I truly enjoy it. My odometer is 134,400 now (3/26/2023) and I purchased it at approx. 74k miles in 2020 at the very beginning of the virus.

Thanks for sharing some thoughts on the GC life! A few others said they've experienced it and it's an FCA thing so as long as it's running the dealership said it's fine 😅 super happy you're having a great experience though I love the GC even with my struggles

My WK2 has 112,000 on it. 12 years old. Since new it’s needed 4 parts replaced: - blower motor - blend door actuator - a/c condenser / trans oil cooler (1 part) - windshield cowl (rubber strip) The blower motor wasn’t dead, but like you said the pressure wasn’t strong enough it cool the rear, but once I replaced that, the car cools down really quick and the pressure is really strong. I bought the Mopar version on rock auto for $130. I change all fluids every 30k miles, alignment once per year, and filters once per year. Oil changes every 4,000 on the dot or before with factory full synthetic oil (Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic, and I use MOPAR parts and fluids), except for shocks and brakes. PowerStop and KYB respectively for those. Love it.

I've driven nothing but GC's since I got my license, 94, 97, 99, 00, 07 and now a 2020 overland with the high altitude blackout package. One of the most comfortable rides out there at the price point. I've done all my own work since the beginning because even back in 2006-07 car work at a shop for a Jeep was crazy expensive! I have owned a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland for 11 years. It has 144k miles. When you hit the 100k mark, get ready for a boatload of issues. UConnect bluetooth rarely works, Shocks, Wheel Bearings, Evaporator Coil, Two (yes two) AC compressors, Heating Coil, Temperature Blend/Recirculation doors (cha ching), both front seats heating pads (another cha ching), rear wiper motor, Radiator, Thermostat, Water Pump, Serpentine Belt, Engine Mounts, Oil Cooler, Oil Solenoid, multiple delaminated interior trim components, Rear bumper proximity sensors and finally both headlights ballasts and light bulbs. You're my "hero of the day!" I saw a local ad for a "killer deal" on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland just like yours. I owned a 1996 Grand Cherokee until 2021 when I sold it to a mechanic friend of mine. I miss it, and I wanted another, newer one. I was actually thinking of going to the dealership and driving this Jeep, and then I watched this video. I'm not sure I want "Jeep things" back in my life at this stage. I could just wait a year and buy a new one with a warranty. You may have saved me $20,000 with your honest review. Great Video and comments. Thank you. I had a 2014 GC Limited (sold it due to its strange/confusing shifter) and currently have a 2016 GC 75th anniversary Limited both with 3.6L and 20" wheels. I think the transmission ( in 2014-2022 models) is 8 speed. My 2016 has the check engine light on for about two weeks now and the turn signal when turn for right turn does not cancel. At 92K miles, it runs fine and I agree with you that it is a great feeling and driving SUV. They are roomy, quiet, and drive very smoothly, and they have enough weight that you feel secure in them. Never felt the transmission acting up, you described. I do all the maintenance myself and so far it has been easy. Will tackle the turn signal assembly ($450!) change myself soon. On so many V-6 these days, the intake manifold is in the way to get to one bank of plugs.

Great review, I really love the 3.6 pentstar engine, and I own a 2022 wrangler with the 3.6 engine. As what I know, the 3.6 engine before the first half of 2014 is the first generation 3.6, which is unfortunately getting more issues. But I do agree that 3.6 is a great engine. Otherwise, there wouldn't be that many 3.6 models from FCA. I gotta say, 3.6 and 5.7 are both the best most recent engines from FCA or stellantis.

One thing I recently did on my 2015 limited is replace all my rockers and lifters. My engine was producing that ‘ticking’ sound which is a common problem with the pentastar engine. One of the rocker bearings broke and was moving up and down which can wear down your cam. It took me 2.5 days to do, and was a pain in the ass due to hard to reach bolts etc, but following videos online I was able to get it done before any wear on my cam and got rid of that ticking sound! Also, took the opportunity to clean every part of my engine so it looks brand new now!

Hey LJ, first great job and really enjoyed your video. I have the same vehicle and have noticed a few times that the front suspension system will loosen over time producing more bounce and a spring like sound over bumps. Last time I had it in to the garage they tightened it and then quoted me $1500.00 to replace parts so I should wait until it fails and hope that the warranty will cover it. Have you ever experienced anything like that with yours? Do you think it is just the swing arm? Seems like a common issue on these...or just a jeep thing?

Good video bro! My wife drives a 2018 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6 that we bought brand new. It was good for the first 50k miles. Our transmission went out at 59,600 miles. So thank God we barely made the it within warranty and they covered it, but it took them 2 months to complete. It’s been non stop electrical problems since about 65,000 Miles. Whether it’s the radio not turning on or not turning off. The touch screen freezing. The gear selector not responding to put it in gear. The blower motor for the AC going out and or the blower motor not activating until you turn off and restart the car. Too say the least, we’ll never buy another Jeep. It’s a shame cause the Grand Cherokees are really beautiful cars that are fast and ride nice. But it’s been a bad experience.

I have a 2014 jeep grand Cherokee Limited V6 4 x 4 with all the bells and whistles. I bought it with 42,000 miles on it and now has 110,000 miles on it and it still runs beautiful. Yes my AC went out but I have I had at the time car shield, I paid $100 a month for the platinum deal and I took it to a car shop they wrote up the work order. All I had to pay was $100 for my deductible and CarShield took care the rest. When I went to get an oil change months later, they noticed that my boot was leaking in the front right rack and pinion was damaged again they put the work order in to car shield. I paid my $100 deductible, and CarShield took care of the rest. Those are major problems that go wrong with a car and cost so much money but I didn’t have to pay anything but $100 for each item the whole AC unit and the boots and struts shocks all that stuff in the front. They fixed it and I only paid $100. I love my jeep grand Cherokee the air suspension does need maintenance now I have endurance which is a different warranty company and all again all I have to pay is $100 and I can take it to the dealership and they will fix it. Something worth looking into for you guys.

It gets regular maintenance. OBTW 1997 with 226,430 miles, same engine, three transmission, FIVE radiators, new EPROM/primary computer at 190,xxx. Rear end hatch inop due to getting hit (five times).. starts and runs everyday.

I just bought 2023 limited 4x4. Im crossing my fingers i didnt make the same mistake twice. I had a 2013 JGC at 47,000 miles the thing died while driving it down I-5 in San diego with my small boys in the backseat. Had it fixed, same part went out again. It was a recall part too. Jeep wouldnt cover the second time because it was an after market part. After that everything started going to hell. I told myself id NEVER buy another jeep. Here i am, just bought another. funny story about its a jeep thing.. in the 80's jeep made an all-wheel drive wagon called the jeep-amc-eagle wagon and they were pretty much the first cross over.. my sister bought a brand new 1988 limited edition and my good friends mom bought the same one just different color my sister gave it to here first daughter in 2003 with some 270k miles only ever replacing the tires, brakes, belts and hoses and oil changes... it always started, never leaked and was one of the best cars I can remember... now the other one was a nightmare.. same dealership same vehicale it was in the shop for a week home for a month an the shop a week hom e for a month for over 7 or 8 months until they made the dealership take it back under Mass. lemon laws.. I have owned a few jeeps cj-5 and 2 cj-7's and 3 jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and currently the only one bought brand new at the end of 2016 is a 2015 Rootbeer colored GC Summit Hemi 4x4 sticker was 62k and we got it for 48k otd. when looking for a used one the trick is to find one that hasnt been in service 48 months or over 48k miles because then you can get the LIFETIME WARRENTY which covers everything you fixed plus so much more.. more than any warrenty i have ever seen even the 19 speakers of the Harman Kardon 900 watt stereo are covered as is the air ride.. 100k miles so far no problems. its fast, and powerful if u want that red light to red light fun, just downshift with the left paddle shifter and it will switch it into race mode.. drop it 2 inches and uncork the exhaust.. the rest of the time it swallows you in comfort . i havent found anything better for the price yet..

Replaced the oil cooler assy. $1200.00 Replaced the radiator, water pump $1300.00, Grinding sound from the rear turned out to be my Emergency brakes to fall apart and grind both discs to garbage($1400.00). Next up was the air suspension system fails leaving the nose on the ground. Try it the next day 40 degrees warmer, allback to normal. $1300. to replace the pump and manifold. @@odestryjam2231to be fair 1k of that 3k was cosmetic and I didn’t really have to pay if I didn’t want to. My navigation screen started to have air bubbles and that was just annoying to me. Alot of the other stuff was covered by the manufacturer warranty that was still in place at the time (engine cylinder misfire issue/water pump failing issue) for example. The remaining 2K I came out of pocket on was to do things like putting a new radiator in and correct a rattling sound issue that was going on underneath my car with Shem s. Let’s just say after all that when my manufacturer warranty finally ended I purchased a third-party warranty the next day.

I think the only 2 things I made sure to do when doing the cooling housing job was getting a long thin 13mm wrench for the lower 13mm nut on the back backet on the manifold thats a pain to get to and I left the farthest to reach nut, behind the throttle off. I would suggest looking for something 2017 or newer. You won't have to deal with the moonshifter. The moonshifter makes it hard to tell what gear you're in without looking at the PRNDL to see where it actually is. People thought was in park but it was drive or reverse. Folks got run over and into accidents. That shifter was deleted for a detent shifter after so many owners had issues with it. The last year for the moonshifter was 2015.

I think not driving like a total jackass helps. I'll probably pay the dealer for plugs, don't feel like dealing with removing the plastic intake in the way. Also, it uses a ZF 8 speed auto. I had my TCM reflashed once, which seemed to help. Shifting now seems fine.

I have a 2013 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6, I purchased it with 50,000 miles on the odometer 6 years ago. Currently, I have 185,000 miles on the 3.6 drive every day. I really didn`t have any problems until I hit 100,000 miles on the car. At 100,000 had a misfire code, went ahead and replaced the 6 spark plugs and coil packs for $150.00 my cost. At 115,000 Thermostat code failed and an aftermarket one and replaced for $ 40.00 my cost. At 130,000 Replaced all brake pads and rotors for $ 300.00 my cost. At 140,000 Replaced fuel cap code, easy fix for $ 30.00 my cost. At 150,000 Replaced the driver window switch from the plastic buttons breaking off $ 50.00 my cost. At 160,000 Had to replace a bent door actuator under the dash for $ 30.00 my cost. At 175,000 the oil pressure sensor failed code, do I go ahead and replace the oil cooler with an aluminum one $ 120.00 my cost. Honestly, if you have tools and are willing to do the work yourself it can be done. You can find a lot of how-to's on KZfaq. I can take the intake manifold off and get to the oil cooler or coil packs in 30 to 45 minutes. The oil cooler job for me only took 2 hrs. from start to finish. I change my oil and rotate my tires every 5,000 miles and use full Synthetic oil every time.

One of the gaskets began to leak and all of my oil leaked out and the engine stopped on me. I got lucky there as it was no damage done to the engine but my thermostat has been fucked every since..right after the engine overheated my thermostat got stuck and ive replaced it 3 times and i am still getting the engine coolant over temperature message and my AC is blowing hot air. Replaced all the caps, connectors , ac condenser fan, the relay switch and nope the issue is still there. Took it to midas and they said its air in the system and they need to bleed the system. And thats when i first heard its a jeep thing smh...they did that 3 times and im having the same issue...i love my grand Cherokee i too got mines in 21 when no one was buying cars but im bout ready to throw this car away 😂

My Jeep Grand Cherokee needed a head . Had the check engine light for the thermostat too. Now it burns oil and smokes on startup so I had to install a catch can. Needs an engine but still drives incredibly smoothly. Just have to top off the oil and empty the can often.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6l I've put 70K on top of the 130K that was on it when I bought it. I drive hard, as in green means GO!. Two 4500+ mile road trips at speeds...way too high in 100+ degree weather up 6% grades. I've had to have the oil pressure sensor replaced and the oil filter housing/cooling unit replaced as well. That's IT! Just got a 2018 GC Summit w/ the 5.7l!

The Wobbles that you’re experiencing is one of two things warp rotors or improperly Balanced tires Rotors will wobble when brakes are pressed at certain speeds an imbalance tire or tires will wobble at all speeds good luck!!!

As I mentioned on a previous post, I am the original owner of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit with 88K miles. I’ve taken good care of it and so far no major issues with the drive train or suspension. I tend to keep cars a long time, but I worry about these transmissions with “lifetime” fluid. I’m 10 years into this fluid. The vehicle looks like new and I could keep it forever, but I’m starting to wonder if this is a disaster waiting to happen. I don’t know why they had to make it so difficult to do a drain and fill / change the filter on these transmissions. Any thoughts?
@LJsGarage
@LJsGarage 4 ай бұрын
I've had the same transmission fluid as well and when I was having shifting issues they checked the levels and quality and it was nice and good still. I'm going to change it at 150k I'm thinking

Sounds like working on a BMW. Any thoughts on the 8 Speed 3.0 Diesel option, with about 87,000 miles on the clock?
@LJsGarage
@LJsGarage Жыл бұрын
It really is. Thats why I wanted to share that these are not everyday easy rides for mechanics. labor is expensive, but parts are reasonable. Ive heard good things about the diesels, but usually from people who have owned a diesel before. I would trust the 3.0 and 87K with good history I would buy.

Aggressive shifting is something all fca vehicles do sometimes I think it has something to do with the tuning cause it even happens on cars from 2010 and they still haven’t fixed it.

I have a ticking at 115,000 miles. I was told by the dealer $4100. Heard of this before? I can’t decide if it’s worth spending that kind of $ on. It’s had oil pressure sensor and the oil cooler changed. The rest, regular maintenance.

Another 2014 Laredo 4x4 in Oz…bought new in nov 2013…no major engine faults … yet…but here’s the kicker she’s on,y done 61500km in just around 10 years. But I agree with everything you said. I don’t have any technical knowledge so I’m on good terms with her dealer where it’s maintained and serviced regularly. I too don’t trust this car. I have trusted a small Hyundai i20 to do 37000 km in 6 months and let my wife run the car in town. I wouldn’t trust this to haul manure. But cars are expensive and man can’t buy stuff now, but here’s hoping it stays together for another 2 years when I can buy some hybrid,phev plus a 7 seater ( sorento perhaps). Oh and FYI it’s a ZF 8 speed not 10 speed

I had a feeling, but I was scared of Fiat-Chrysler and the screen head unit in the dash over time when I purchased my 2015 GC Laredo Altitude in March of 2015. I sucked it up at the time and purchased the lifetime Mopar BTB warranty with the $100 deductible. 92,000 miles on it today. I believe the extended MOPAR warranty paid for itself when the 2 fuel senders in the gas tank failed, along with a myriad of other repairs. Chrysler / Jeep quality is not good. For comparison, my wife's 2014 Toyota RAV-4 needed only (1) a new battery and (2) a TPMS sensor during the same period.
