Is The Legendary Honda NSX Actually Overrated? (JDM Legends Tour Pt. 27)

No doubt about it, the original Honda NSX is a thing of legend. You can't whisper it without someone mentioning Ayrton Senna, or telling you how it forced Ferrari to change what they do.
But sometimes, a car's legend can grow so much that it become impossible for it to live up to expectations. I've just bagged Honda UK's very own NSX for a weekend and as someone who has never been an NSX fanboy, I now intend to find out just how good (or not) this modern day icon really is.

the NSX really is the perfect sportscar - it has usable power, it's easy to see out of, it's really compact, and by older sportscar standards, extremely reliable and (relatively) inexpensive to maintain.

I've got a '96 NSX-T. Love it! I put a Comptech supercharger, high air flow and exhaust on it. Plenty fast enough for me, and the Honda reliability is great. I've driven a 95 NSX, a 95 F355, a 95 Porsche 911, and the NSX would be my choice. The maintenance cost is high for a Honda, but not for a supercar. The Porsche is excellent in terms of maintenance costs (common), the Ferrari was stratospheric. The NSX is the most excellent automobile as a whole. With a higher budget and unlimited resources, the F355 would be my choice. The Porsche is lovely, amazing in all respects, but, as always, teutonic, surgical, lacking in the passion department (German, as is the case, but shouldn't discourage anyone. A 97 911 would be an amazing ownership experience. The Ferrari isn't a daily driver, meaning, every single day of the year. The NSX can be just that. It can be civil and it can be a beast. NSX feels like it's built of surgical instruments. It's predictable and it delivers. It's the long-term owner. It's sexy in a rocket scientist sort of way.

Regarding the NSX's spare wheel and tyre, there will always be a situation when a puncture is inconvenient, but at least Honda designed the NSX boot shape specifically to allow any of the wheels to fit so it could be carried somewhere to be repaired, which is more than other manufacturers did with their similar cars. Ferrari just gave you a can of Finilec. Something that Jay failed to mention in his criticism of the spare wheel and tyre is that the NSX was in fact supplied with its own inflation pump, so once the collapsed tyre was on the car, you could inflate it at the side of the road. I think they may have been the first manufacturer to supply a spare like this. And he also missed the fact that although the car has different wheel sizes front and rear, the spare could be used in either location. Just by inflating it to different pressures (as stated in the instructions), it would assume the correct diameter to match the wheel on the other side, front or rear. I'm very sure they were the first (and may still be the only) manufacturer to supply a spare with that capability. Honda worked hard with I think it was Yokohama to achieve this. Senna may not have been involved right from the beginning of the design stage, but he was during the actual drive testing and evaluation stages of the development process, somewhat more than was intimated in the video. During development, Honda of course wanted to test the NSX against the perceived current competition and tried to run the NSX against (among others) a Ferrari (348 I seem to recall, or was it a 328) and a Porsche 911. The comparison test was largely unsuccessful as the Ferrari blew its clutch out the side of the car before the test really began and the 911's front end was so unstable at the speeds they wanted to test, no-one wanted to drive it. I now recall the test also included the Nissan Skyline (GTR/GTO?) with which the Honda engineers were very impressed. Before anyone asks, yes I've had an NSX and I used to work for Honda (not at the same time though).

NSXPrime Wiki actually has decent production numbers for at least the US market and about 8.5% of total production were Autos in this market, with Auto production skewed measurably toward the NA1 (91-96) cars. Also with respect to your steering comment...you may be safe: the car Ayrton would have driven wouldn't have had the power steering rack that the 05s do. (I agree though, his involvement is often overstated. Bobby Rahal and "Gan San" had far more seat time and input in addition to development engineer drivers of course).

I would love to see your take on an early model NSX. SENNA had a lot to do with its original set up.... pushing for stiffer and stiffer. You said Ferrari would have storage up front, but thats just wrong. Both the 328 and the 348 which were the main targets for the NSX had spare tires up front just like the NSX, and if you use the factory size of 215 or 225 tires (like you should), they will fitt in the back storage if you have to use the spare. (thats why the left side is bigger and a round shape).

I think it would be interesting to drive an older model, I've heard that the NSX changed more than one would expect over its very long production lifetime. Things like the electronic steering which are a bit of let down weren't present in the original car, and apparently it got a bit porkier as well. I assume it was a combination of Honda wanting to keep innovating and maintaining the relevance of the car combined with developments in safety regulations that saw the end of so many a pop up headlight.

Well done here! just one thing if you have a flat tire that one will actually fit in the trunk! that's the reason it has an circular form on the left.

GetawayinStockholm (3rd video) seemed to like the NSX too! 😁

I had an NSX (original 1991) and it was absolutely telepathic in both ways - the way it reacts and the way it gives back road info. However, at current price I'll have to pass.

I was surprised to hear you say that there is not a big difference between the early NSX and the late model. Other reviews I have watched emphasized the lower weight and stiffer suspension of the early model making it the unicorn in the production series even though it is down on power. I haven't checked the specs but am curious whether you came across this difference during your research.

I remember seeing a 91' NSX in red for sale in Brisbane Australia six years ago for $75K, the car has doubled since then.

I used to love the layout interior looks comfortable pratical and easy to drive. The horsepower isn't as high as most exotics but yet it sure keeps up with them and yet gas miles isnt ridiculous like the rest.

When I saw the Mitsubishi 3000GT I wanted you to drive that instead, the twin turbo 4WD would be a bucket list drive for me, the NSX is a beautiful car but not one I've ever dreamt of owning.

Graeme W the 3000 was never a real car fanatics car of the day. That belonged to the Supra, 300z TT or NSX if you had a lot of coin. The 3000 and dodge stealth, although fairly quick, were always the laughing stock of the bunch. Too heavy, too high, too much body roll and a day late and a dollar short to the game.

@@KosmicHRTRacingTeam It seems that after talking to someone with knowledge this is definitely a case of never meet your hero's, a bit like when people rave about the E Type Jaguar, I've driven maybe 20 or so when I worked at a classic car garage and to be honest they've got dreadful handling, body roll and just not nice to drive at all. Still like the 3000 because of its look and anyway I've not got the skills or the roads to use its full potential, do like the the Supra and 300ZX for he same reasons. Cheers

I have a little 2004 Civic Type R Ep3. Honda make incredible cars. I can only imagine how an NSX feels to drive.

Nothing to write home about, but at 2:50 you show and mention a white Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT Apex. The car name Trueno (the Spanish word for thunder) is (in)correctly pronounced Toreno by the Japanese due to their inability to combine the consonants and vowels.

If you want one of the more interesting and visceral V6 noises available, check out the 1st generation Hyundai Genesis Coupe in the 3.8L variant. The 3.8L v6 isn't a performance king, but it grumbles and burbles and growls more than even some American V8 engines that I've heard, which is very unusual for a V6. Usually they have a much more harmonious sound in my experience, so it's a delightful surprise.
