Is The Little Mermaid Remake A Disaster? | A Movie Review
Hello and welcome to The Trove!
First off, I'd like to address that this review is a little bit late. I saw the movie on opening night and intended to have a review up within the week. At most, two weeks. But here we are almost a month later... Life and lack of motivation get in the way sometimes, but here we are. I finished it!
As a massive lover of Walt Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989), and a critic of Disney's latest slew of live-action remakes, I've been bracing for this one for a while. So was the new version of The Little Mermaid a trainwreck, or was it a pleasant surprise? Watch my review to find out what I thought, and make sure to leave your own opinions in the comments below!

In retrospect, the remake was quite decent to say the least. I didn't have many complaints just nervous for I cherish the animated original with every molecule in my body. There's a sense of effort in this project. I was both charmed and stumped by the casting (it's a mixed bag) but overall, I was pleasantly impressed. I like to think if Howard Ashman were alive, he would be quite pleased with what they did to his music - except for Scuttlebutt. *NOBODY ASKED FOR THAT!* No hate for Lin Manuel Miranda or Awkwafina, but this just didn't work for them.

You're right. You can praise Halle's version as much as you want. But dont even dare to insult Howard's legacy. You know it really hurts that someone who dont know anything about disney renaissance era compared Part of Your World with another version without any knowledge I dont like the live action, but especially for this song need to be considered carefully because I've watch lots of part of your world analysis and that's a thing that i can say that disney really care about the movie and put their effort on it. This is also the best "I Want" song in the entire Disney universe. It's one of the most major changes that made this film not so bad (although i still hate this movie). Well both version actually work with their own way. Howard Ashman specifically asked for "Part of Your World" to be sung like a monologue, it's not meant for anyone else outside of the grotto to hear what Ariel was singing, the scene should be more intimate with a youthful wonder, more gentleness and love for the world on land, since the focus of the song is something she loves. In the original version, when Ariel sighs and the song ends slowly and gently with the last few verses, I can really feel the emotion there which is the things Ariel tells us what she wants to do in the song are just wishful thinking at this point. The live action is more cheerful and hopeful and also the orchestration supports that adding a new wonderful intensity to the song. I don't think the remake version capture the emotions of the original but yeah everything doesnt need to be the same since this is live action remake so I hope that there's some improvisations too. In the animated version, Ariel wishes to be part of the human world, she felt sad that the ocean was trapping her in a way that no one else seemed to understand, but in the remake version, they made Ariel sound like she hate the fact that the ocean is trapping her (that's showed by she emphasized the words 'stand' and 'above'), feeling sad about something isn't the same as feeling hate towards something. The reprise in the remake should sound hopeful, but here it just feels like repeating the same kind of singing of the first part, which adds no new emotion to the song. The live action version actually have lots of imperfection in the beginning, but really works in middle to the end. So which is the best? We all know that the original Part of Your World will always win not just because the nostalgia vibe but also Jodi Benson (original Ariel's voice actress) is really well and carefully directed by Howard Ashman, the legendary lyricist who made Disney rise from its downfall and started the renaissance era of Disney, who recently returned from his huge career in musical broadway theater world that time, that even her breaths, stress and pause on each syllable are really well and gently cared for. But if we judging them with Howard's standards, I dont think that this is fair. So if we see this as "I Want" song, the original is more gentle and intimately that showings desperate hope while the live action one is more cheerful and hopeful. It depends on your perspective to determine it. The original is about a little hope, wish and dream from your heart that you want to say but you dont want everyone to know about while the live action shows your hope, wish and dream that you want to shout to everyone to let the world know. Well Im not good at explaining so here's the full explanation. Also an important part of maintaining that type of reserved passion is also that the original song does not change key. In the worlds of pop music and musical theater finishing off with a key change is a helpful tool for bringing songs to a heightened emotional level and when covering Part of Your World, some people have done exactly that but I don't really think that a key change is necessary because that wasn't the intent of the songwriters. In fact I think that's staying in the same key the whole time is what makes it work so well having it push and pull and eventually bring Ariel back down to where she started tells a story effectively it even ends with the same motif it began with showing the audience the life that she wants but then going back to the life that she has. As you can see in the first (look at this stuff) and last (part of that world) sentence the song doesn't change the key at all which really shows that the song is just a small wish from the bottom of her heart and then she realizes that it is impossible to achieve so she returns to the world/reality where she lives. So yeah the live action one is more like a current pop music imo because they change the key, making the highs feels higher and as a result the lows feel lower. But it still works as "I Want" song. From this you can know that Howard Ashman was a great lyricist that he can even tell a story from a song. He also made the song dynamically switching from singing to talking and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable. Well because im bad at explaining so here's the full explanation. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJZgZ9mW26y-iYU.html Some people say that Jodi sings the song as a character and Haile sings the song like she is in front of America's Got Talent's juries. Well i can agree with that. Actually, directors (I mean Ashman) do direct them in a certain way. When Jodi Benson was recording, the director specifically told her that she had to sing like she was saying something intimate instead of belting it like she was in front of thousands of people, that's why all her big notes don't actually sound big and powerful but sweet and dramatic. While I believe in Halle's version they did quite the opposite. You can see that Ariel in the live action version is a sligthly less interacting with the environment around it. But the most sadly that the live action lost the cute interaction between Ariel and Flounder, like Ariel clutching its fins and dancing together, which shows that Ariel has more personality (well because you know Flounder here looks very hyper-realistic in live action, almost like a normal thropical fish so i dont think it will works). But I'm still grateful because they removed some of the scenes that disturbed this intimate moment, such as the part where Sebastian screams and winks. And I really hate the fact that the live action one make the surroundings become darker just to attempt to be more realistic. The consequence is that we are not shown how many and unique objects in Ariel's cave which is a quite important part in showing how interested she is in the human world. Now they are all covered by the darkness. Also the really butchered songs are Poor Unfortunate Soul and Kiss the Girl. The lyrics changes is unnecessary and completely ruined the meaning of the song. Under the sea is just out of context because Ariel is not supposed to sung along at that part. You know it's just shows that they dont even care about the story and just want to show off Halle's voice. I dont know what they want to fix from the original even though they just kept ruined Ashman’s legacy. The additional songs are okay, except for Scuttlebutt, it is just a trash. It should not be exist anymore. I mostly prefer Le Poisson than this garbage. I know both songs are supposed to be a jokes but Le poisson is happy and fun meanwhile scuttlebut is cringe. In the original, scuttle doesnt need to sings a literall song and waste our 2 minutes just to conveyed Ariel that Eric is getting married. Scuttle was not character that is designed to be able to sing in the first place (you can see it from kiss the girl scene when its voice literally ruined the mood) yet in this live action they literally gived it a song?! I like they added new song for Eric but bro they keep tried to kill his character in every chances

The Little Mermaid Broadway show gave Eric a song called "Her Voice" which is so much better than "Wild Uncharted Waters". It also has a song called "If Only", which was Ariel, Eric, Triton, and Sebastian all desperate as things fall apart. The show also included the suplot of Triton and Ursula as siblings, but they actually DID stuff with it, and it was a big part of the story and world building.

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts! I had low hopes for The Little Mermaid, but actually for the reverse reasons you did. I wasn't a huge fan of the original. It wasn't bad!!! I just thought it was _okay,_ and I honestly only watched the remake out of boredom. But it surpassed all of my expectations. Cinderella 2015 is still the best LA to me, but TLM is now a very close second. I loved it to the point of tears and have seen it twice! It's funny how Beauty and the Beast and TLM feel like direct opposites. Emma Watson (an upstanding actress) was clearly only cast because of her resemblance to Belle, and because of her association to "book loving" characters. Meanwhile Halle Bailey has zero resemblance to Ariel, and zero association to water-based characters. But, for me, Watson made an atrocious Belle while Halle was a fantastic Ariel. And it's because of exactly as you said: what's important about these stories and these characters is capturing the essence of who they are, not their physical appearance (again, ironic given "physical appearance isn't everything" was the main point of BATB). I have a question for you: If you had to rank the newly added songs in the Live Actions (so "Wild Uncharted Waters", "Speechless", "Evermore", etc.), how would you rank them?

Finally… I was like this is this man’s favorite movie???!! Where’s the review 🤣 But I wanna point of the Part of Your World versions BOTH are great and impactful but the animated version has more personal + private longing for those who feel silenced but want to encourage themselves and speak upon their longings The live action version is more determined and outspoken “letting the world” know that I’m here. expressing and sharing those feelings for those who feel then need to be heard (in a good way)

I missed the original ending, the part when Triton gives Ariel legs and she walks out of the water towards Eric. In my opinion instead of Eric playing with Max in the castle he should've played on the beach and then Ariel should've walked out of the water. And ofc the sparkly dress. I loved Ariel's new song and Eric's song but Scuttle song wasn't my favorite and it wasn't necessary. Other than this I liked the movie. It's definitely one of the better live action adaptation.

I'm so happy I clicked on this! I loved hearing how you approached your viewing of this movie. I also fully agree with your take on Halle's casting, but I actually didn't mind Scuttlebutt or Akwafina as Scuttle. The only thing that bothered me was the shot at the end. I wish it had been more iconic instead of Ariel and Eric just speedboating sideways out of the frame. But I guess that's just me because I don't hear anyone else complaining about it, lol!

So apparently within 8 minutes, I chanced upon what could be THE best critical video of this movie. Why?, well- because we are two peas in a pod. I cannot stress enough how Ariel is my most favourite character of all Disney animations- and it's not just a whim, it's deeply set within. First and foremost, "for NO reason", is going to be a very common expression when explaining the plot changes from the original. They say it's upgrading, but the majority agree it's useless and irrelevant. I mean, making Eric an adopted foundling, making Ursula give Ariel amnesia side-effects, Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric... why? WHY??? And just because Ursula says 09:07 - I mean, hasn't anyone heard of the word 'courtier'? The ONLY thing that helps me digest this is that it was in the original plans of the animation, however scrapping this fact made the animation better, and keeping it in the live-action...again, irrelevant! Not to mention it would have been closer to the original fairy tale. P.s., I'm glad at least there were very minor hints of it in this movie... Casting-wise, not bad but not the best in my opinion. Halle Bailey would not have been my first choice. True she has a cute giggle and a phenomenal voice, but tended to be a bit too loud in certain songs and needed a better tone of red for the hair instead of clay brown. Not looking like a counterpart character may not be an issue, but it helps. At the end scene of Part Of Your World, the hair somehow became the perfect red she could have been given throughout the movie, at least in the mermaid parts. Javier is ok but bland (I liked his accent though!), and Melissa McCarthy was good but a bit overdone at times. Personally, I always opted for Kathy Bates. Jonah is good, and given he lacked substance in how they portray him, it didn't make much difference. At a certain point, he was just there to be meant to be saved. However, the transition from friendship to love between Jonah and Halle was quite on point. Jessica Alexander as Vanessa was top notch! Visually, Ariel's upgraded tail was THE BOMB! Loved it through and through. However, when it came to certain scenery I was highly unamused. I kept waiting for the golden palace of Atlantica, which ended being a pile of stalagmites rather than the majestic coral and amber palace it deserved to be. There was also a lot, I mean A LOT of darkness. I couldn't make out Ariel's transformation through all that black smoke! What was wrong with a yellow magic bubble? Music, the originals were good, but Under The Sea missed a bit of umf when it came to the beat, and needed more concentrated space in certain shots to not look like an aquarium. As for Ariel's interaction in it, I share your EXACT thoughts- nice melody, but ill-placed. Wild Uncharted Waters was ok but at a time a bit dragging, and Scuttlebutt should in truth have been just dialogue, and part of it's time taken by Triton's destruction of Ariel's grotto, which is waaaaaaaay too short in the movie. It looked more like just an impulse instead of a lesson. The changed lyrics in Kiss The Girl at least was very subtle, but the changes in Poor Unfortunate Souls wasn't very impressive for all the worth it was being advertised. Again, it should have remained the same. All-in-all, this movie is good on the whole, and it will still be added to my Disney collection in a place of priority. Great job on your video! :) Thanks for sharing your opinion.

"They say it's upgrading, but the majority agree it's useless and irrelevant. I mean, making Eric an adopted foundling, making Ursula give Ariel amnesia side-effects, Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric... why? WHY???" The thing with Eric is that they wanted to go in strict parallels between Ariel's and Eric's situation; which means that Eric is - also like in Andersen's original tale, not a free ruler, but like Ariel under parental restrictions. They gave Eric a black mother - as they said - to take it as parallel to Ariel's white father (and as side effect that it shouldn't be interpreted as a white vs black political context); and the adoption is also because it's more likely (than a black woman with a white son); and it also makes sense in my opinion, as Eric is a Danish name and that explains how he got into this Caribbean world--- About Ariel killing Ursula....well, I still do not understand why it's anyway important who exactly killed Ursula, as it had been both Ariel and Eric against Ursula; and nobody should say that Ariel couldn't have done it (as she is just pulling around, and not navigating actively as a sailor). And I also think that it had been a kind of tradition that the fairy tale climax was that the villian is defeated by the prince and the "princess" is saved. And Ariel was also not as much the main character of the movie, it was rather more focused also on the animals and Eric. But with female main characters, such like Mulan, it is also that she defeats the villian in the ending climax; and so such a female climax had been also established with more modern Disney movies; and new experimental ideas, like the sacrifice ideas just like in Tangled or Frozen; as these are recent fan favorites of the young generation, I think it's okay to see also in Eric's will to fight and die for Ariel such a heroic moment, and not only in killing the villian....they put visuals and movie logic from the recent Disney movies into this remake, such like the original animated movie did include the taste of the target audience thirty years ago, and Disney is rather focusing on new generations, and not as fan service for nostalgic reasons.... (It's even me who was born after The Little Mermaid release and never watched it in cinema, only the new movie ....(; )

@@felicity1877 "Disney is rather focusing on new generations, and not as fan service for nostalgic reasons....", is rather insulting from Disney if this is truly their ideology of excluding the animation fanbase and since it's thanks to such fans, like myself, who have financed their profits and increased their progress with our appreciation. "(It's even me who was born after The Little Mermaid release and never watched it in cinema, only the new movie ....(; )" ... I was born slightly before Ariel's existence and basically lived with the character close to heart for all my life so, as per my first point, I rest my case.

They added amnesia to Ursula's spell so Ariel will forget about true love kiss. But this is completely unnecessary because Sebastian still reminds her. This change made the scene very less romantic because Ariel is way more reluctant to kiss him in this scene. Also if Ariel didn't kiss him for true love so what's the point of the song and the scene? Imagine if they actually managed to kissing but because Ariel's not too serious about it because she forgot about the terms of true love then nothing happen, she doesnt get her voice back and cant be human permanently.

17:06 I'm all for the casting of Ariel in this movie, but I don't think it's a fair claim to the integrity of the original to say that because of this casting a new demographic can now relate to Ariel. Audiences should relate to a character because of who the character is and not because of skin color. In some stories, this claim makes sense because the character's skin color can have an impact on the story and the character's motives. But that's not the case for the Little Mermaid. Audiences should be able to relate to both versions of Ariel because of her character: her desires, her motivations, her passion.

This is my personal opinion, so here. Its so awesome that this is your favorite Disney movie, despite its not in my top 5, maybe 7 or 8, I dunno. I just don’t care for certain characters like Eric nearly as much, mainly because he felt like a fluffed up version of Philip. I know a lot of people still really love him and how caring and compassionate he is, I just felt the original movie kinda glazed over his initial reaction of Ariel being a mermaid and they’re real. I will agree I really love how their relationship dynamic is a lot more developed and throughout with Eric having an interest in the ocean, the part with the conch shell made me laugh so hard. I don’t like particularly certain parts being sh*tted on, like a fisher literally fishing her out, the original “actual encounter” was always super sweet imo. I dunno why it got changed, but whatever. One of the things that really irritated me about the movie was sadly the songs, something that can easily make or break a movie. I kinda understand why Chef Loui’s song was cut, given how graphic it would’ve been in real life him butchering a fish in front of Sebastian, but I always liked how it showed how much Sebastian hated humans while sucking it up for Ariel. I completely agree with Scuttlebutt, that song made me cringe so hard. I was REALLY disappointed with how watered down (get it?) Kiss the Girl was, using only Sebastian, Scuttle and Flounder instead of a chorus of fish to help. One of the most memorable parts of that song is oddly enough Scuttle trying to sing, and the flamingos having to shut him up as to not ruin the romantic atmosphere. I kinda don’t mind the Ariel’s name part being changed, but imo, I really felt Hallie really didn’t know how to act in certain scenes. Ariel to me is a very energetic, sweet, bubbly character who just doesn’t care how others might react to her oddball personality. It felt like that part wasn’t shown nearly as well, maybe its the director’s fault, I don’t know. I just feel she kinda just stood there, looking confused at the camera as if she forgot her lines or something. I agree with Ursula’s point, I felt she was less threatening and not nearly as manipulative. Like especially in the OG when she convinces Ariel making him love her without her voice will be so easy, she simply doesn’t do that. Another thing I’m surprised you didn’t mention was her sisters having a little more importance in the story. I don’t know how to feel about their names not beginning with A, as the third movie explained why, in honor of how much Triton loved his wife Athena. I feel the sisters still got majorly sidelined, considering some of them aren’t particularly nice. As far as Hallie goes for being Ariel, I agree she has an amazing voice and that’s the reason why she was cast. However, this isn’t to be racist at all, but her hair kinda threw her off. I always loved how flowy and unique Ariel’s hair was, especially because it was meant to be a statement of her design, as mentioned in a previous video. I just feel it seemed a bit off. I appreciate the idea of having a POC mermaid, given how many mermaid movies ALWAYS use white or Caucasian actresses instead. But I really feel the movie would’ve done a lot better if it wasn’t meant to be a copy of the original animation. Think of Pinnochio with the live action version that came out in the 2000s, a lot of people kept confusing it as a Disney movie, that one was a LOT better than the actual live action by Disney. Or with so many different versions of Cinderella. Overall, I’d give this movie a 6/10. While I appreciated different changes to better the story, unfortunately the movie also made a lot of bad moves. Like the ending part when Triton gives them his blessing, I always LOVED the sparkly dress, showing how mature she has become, despite her mistakes. And especially the rainbow Triton make at the end of the movie, I don’t like how he simply shoved their boat away. Thankfully none of my favorites aside the Lion King have been done yet, and with how little Disney gives a crap about what audiences keep demanding, Treasure Planet or especially Atlantis, I really didn’t have high hopes for this one. And with every live action coming out, the bar keeps getting lower and lower to the point it will hit hell eventually. I don’t get why the live action versions can’t be more like the 101 and 102 Dalmatians made back then. If anything, its basically what the Disney Home Video sequels were, a complete nightmare for some unless you were the Lion King 2. I recommend a video on the Disney sequels if you need ideas for more videos! Or which movies you DON’T want live adaptations for, given you already did one for ones you wouldn’t mind.

My sister, little brother, and I love this movie. You've talked about everything we were thinking of. Now u want you do this favor. Listen to Halle's version of "Part of your world" and tell me if you hear her voice crack just once. The song is beautiful and one of our favorite parts of the movie. But if you hear a distinct crack in the song, let me know. No one seems to believe me when I bring it up. What do you hear?

@rideerose3677 11 ай бұрын
Yes, you're correct! I heard the voice crack when she sings the part "wanderin' free" and I thought it was a deliberate choice made by Halle or the director, because her voice cracks specifically at the word "free" to emote to the fact that she didn't feel free, since she wasn't allowed to explore the above world and satisfy her curiosity.

I actually liked that Ursula removed Ariel's memory in this version. I think it allowed us to know that she's ultimately on land because she yearns for it. Interesting perspective. But I won't be watching this live action adaptation either. I haven't seen any of the live action remakes, so there is no need to start with this one… And from what I have seen from the range offered of these re-adaptations, there is very little incentive to do so. It is interesting to see that the animated Little Mermaid was the beginning of the Disney Renaissance, but what I am seeing is Disney plunging head-first into the "Dark ages". All their IPs are being systematically ruined; MCU, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and now their animated feature portfolio is getting a right hammering. This film was pretty much a financial disaster. Products need to do far better than, at best, "break-even". I don't agree with you about an agenda with this film. Ask the Danes what they think of the adjustment to the protagonist. So, I have to wonder about what you are thinking about Snow White and the Seven Magical Forest people… 🙄 You'll be hard pressed to deny an agenda there. And if this one bombs too, then there may well be serious repercussions within Disney senior executives.

I think of all the more recent remakes, TLM is the best one. I still prefer the animated one but I was glad I came out liking this one. I hated Triton though, they tried to make him more calm and quietly angry but the entire time he just came off as overly cruel, especially in the scene where he destroys Ariel's grotto, at least in the animated movie he regretted making Ariel cry. I also liked Ariel's song when she was first on land, the song itself is nice but I kind of wish everyone BUT Ariel sang it instead, IDK. overall it was a solid 7/10 for me

There’s the lagoon scene where in the animated movie, it’s this wonderful beautiful romantic spectacle. It’s has you going “Yeah! Kiss the girl.” And then there’s the live action version, where it’s just Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle singing. But we see the intimacy between Ariel and Eric, and be so cute together and it’s now “ERIC I SWEAR TO GOD! KISS HER ALREADY!”

I loved this movie when I was a kid Prince Eric was my favorite Prince because I was drawn to the water and Ships. I've always been drawn to the Ocean also when I swam in water I always did The Dolphin or The Mermaid I was exited to see the movie Halle Bailey was stunning as Ariel her voice is angelic and was perfect for the role. Jonah Hauer-King was a perfect casting for Eric he's the first Disney Prince to actually look like the character. Jacob Tremblay was adorable as Flounder. Daveed Digs was great as Sebastian and made me laugh lot. Aquafina was awesome as Scuttle she was hilarious in the role, Melissa McCarthy was great as Ursula I loved everything she did in the role. Jessica Alexander was showstopper s Vanessa she terrified me in the role. Javier Bardem did good as King Triton but I wanted more emotion. I loved Prince Eric song Wild Uncharted Waters too much its my most streamed song on Spotify Halle Bailey sang Part of Your World beautifully, I love the song For The First Time is great song I love the correlation to Part of Your World and Under The Sea. When Halle sang Part of Your World (reprise II) ball cried in the theaters it was such an emotion reprise every time I listen to it I cry. I loved how Melissa sang Poor Unfortunate Souls it sounded so good. I'm in the minority who love The Scuttlebutt. My favorite rendition song was Kiss The Girl I loved how they incorporated Scuttle and Flounder more in the song. This movie is the best Disney live action movie Disney has made.

Overall Halee really made a great Ariel but I only say that after having seen her protray the role in the movie. She kept the character very innocent. The only thing that kinda bugged me about this movie was it felt a little too much cut and paste. I also agree that Ariel chimming in on Under the Sea doesn’t fit.

Halle Bailey was Stunning as Ariel and im glad young girls and women can see themselves in her. The romance between Ariel and Eric was my favorite part of the film, they where so adorable and sweet and it's nice to have a romantic fairytale again. I was looking forward for your review, as a fellow Little Mermaid fan. I have a similar opinion to you about this film. I liked it, more than I thought I would, but it still doesn't beat the classic animated masterpiece. The things I liked: Hailey Bailey's performance. I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the race-swap, because I have some issues with the way Hollywood uses diversity as a marketing tool. However, I think Bailey truly captured the essence of who Ariel is: a youthful, cheerful and dreamy girl. Her vocals are stunning. I also liked Hauer's performance as Prince Eric, as well as the voice-acting for the comic relief. I actually did enjoy Awkwafina as Scuttle, and I'm probably the only one on the planet who likes "The Scuttlebutt", LOL. And I did enjoy the visual design of Scuttle and Flounder; maybe it's because I'm a marine biologist, but I didn't have a problem with the sea life looking too realistic (except maybe Sebastian. He looks kinda odd). I really liked the scenes on land, because I think that's when the film becomes it's own. The actress who plays Vanessa did a great job; and Bailey's vocals as a siren!....Wow, that girl can sing! I liked some of the new scenes like the one in the library, which I think complimented the relationship between the two lovers. The score is wonderful. If you listen it solo, especially the ending, it's breath-taking. Jodi Benson's cameo was sweet. Also, Ariel's third reprise of "Part of your world" was added very aptly in this movie. As you said, it gives a more jaded perspective to Ariel's views on land. And the final scene was touching. Things I'm mixed on: "Part of your world" cover. It's funny because I loved Hailey's vocals, but watching it on screen, it felt more like she was singing at a concert more than she was performing the scene. It sounded beautiful, but it took me out of the scene. The underwater visuals aren't great, but there are some sequences I thought looked good, like "Under the sea", or Ursula's lair. I didn't love Sebastian's design as I mentioned earlier, but I got used to it after a while. Javier Bardem's performance was serviceable in the vulnerable moments, but very staid when he needed to be energetic. McCarthy's performance as Ursula is fun, but overall it feels more like she's cosplaying Ursula, not that she is Ursula. I liked the shark sequence here too, although it's not as intense as it is in the animated version. I'm also torn between the climax, because a part of me liked to see Ariel defeating Ursula, but on the other hand this change takes away a key moment for Eric to make Triton realise not all humans are bad. Ariel basically does everything in this movie, Eric isn't allowed to show why he is worthy for her hand. Things I disliked: I HATED that they removed the lyrics of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and "Kiss the girl", but not because they made the songs sound bad, but because of the reasons that led the creators to do so. I've always been a staunch defender of the original film when it comes to people criticising it over misguided ideas about feminism; and it pissed me off that the creators of the remake bought into the supposed controversy and altered the lyrics just to appease the idiots. But I HATE even more the addition of Ursula's new spell on the deal! It adds nothing to the plot, and it was added just so that Ariel isn't the one looking for the kiss, because "feminism"! Ironically, it makes the scene even more controversial, because with Ariel forgetting that she needs the kiss, it actually takes away her agency and makes the sequence closer to be controversial than the original ever was. I loathe that people think the original film is sexist just because Ariel went after a guy. Are strong, independent women not allowed to be open that they like a guy now? Ugh.

I recently watched the bonus material for the 1989 animated Little Mermaid. They described the Little Mermaid ride... "Ariel has to look like Ariel, because the audience knows what Ariel looks like." It isn't racist to call out a race swap, and it is a drastic recharacterization of the character. So I'm going to disagree that Halle Bailey is the perfect actress to play Ariel. As you point out you get used to the animal characters I'd add you also get used to recharacterized Ariel as well. People's interest in going to see these live action remakes is that the character looks like the movie they saw as a kid. Thought experiment, if Disney had kept most of the original characterizations the movie would have made more money and likely would have had a better box office in Asian and other foreign markets. So from a financial standpoint it is absurd to say Halle Bailey was the perfect actress for the role, and I would say from an artistic and nostalgic standpoint as well.

Just three rebuttals from me. 1. Scuttlebutt was annoying, but also a major bop! I tried to hate it, but I couldn't! But that's why musical tastes vary from person to person. 2. Ursula adding the "forget you need the kiss" element to the spell was totally in her conniving character. Plus, it brought the narrative back to the reason why Ariel accepted the deal in the first place. Not for a microwave romance, but for a chance to truly experience what it's like to be human. Also, Sebastian failed to remind Ariel that she needed the kiss. So, it did have a major bearing on the plot. 3. As beloved as Jodie Benson's Part of That World was, Halle Bailey's rendition was better both vocally and in expressing her complex emotions in the moment. Side Note: Jodie Benson was instructed to hold back, while Halle Bailey was allowed more freedom of expression. I think Allen Menkin learned from his previous mistake. 😎

I agree on the casting controversy mostly, except the fact that while a lot of POC love this and think anyone who disagrees with racebending characters is a bigot or racist or upset over nothing, many POC including me, would pefer original characters. We've been called racist and traitors by the other POC. So I think that yes, it is not bad that POC are getting characters, but that we're getting scraps and despite so many POC's hatred of Europeans, they still want to be tied to Europe by being in stories set in Europe. PS. While we're talking about other experiences, where are the Slavic characters that aren't villains, I mean like the fact that most of them aren't POC and POC often ENCOURAGE hate and invalidate Slavs, is probably the reason the industry isn't listening. And before any "RAYCISS" people say anything, are you aware that the KKK lynched Slavs? That Ukrainians were put in internment camps in WW1, just like the Japanese were in WW2? I bet you didn't. Im not emotionally connected to the ‘89 Little Mermaid. It’s my least favourite of the Renaissance for several different reasons so I was able to go into this film completely unbiased which is probably why I was able to enjoy this film 1000x more than OG fans. Every complaint that a lot of you have is purely out of personal preference which you’re more than entitled to but from a strictly objective perspective, the film is damn near a 10/10. The changes that were made for the live action were issues that I had with the animated film back when I was a child lol. Complaints about CGI.. eh. to each their own. CGI has never really bothered me because I know it’s not real and that’s ok. I don’t expect perfection. To me, the under water scenes and the animated animals look perfectly fine. I really don’t know what y’all thought they were supposed to look like lol. What bothers me is when critics keep comparing The Little Mermaid to Way of the Water (of all films that has sequences that take place under water) because that’s a movie that took literally 12yrs to make and not only that but the characters in Avatar are not doing a lot of singing, dancing, and talking underwater. So I don’t feel like that’s a fair comparison. Fair comparison would be Aquaman ‘18 or Wakanda Forever ‘22 where the underwater sequences looked just as good/bad. I actually think Awqwifina was exceptionally well casted. I loved that they made her a girl, making her Ariel’s one and only female companion. Her voice is perfect (annoying, but perfect). She literally sounds like an obnoxious bird and people have been saying that for years. I loved her and her fabulous song. I do feel like it was a better replacement for the chef scene (my personal favourite from the ‘89 version) however, that scene is very graphic for a animated film and I imagine that wouldn’t translate well to live action. Animated Ariel is checked out of Under the Sea because she’s no longer interested in sea life and wants nothing more to do with it. Live action Ariel still loves and appreciates her home, but still “wants more”. 😜 which is why she joins in on the song. She doesn’t hate her home. She’s not as self loathing, I guess 😂. Personally, I feel like that’s a better written and more respectful character. It was dumb to make Triton and Ursula siblings. That’s true. Can’t argue that lol. It prompts more questions thanks answers anything. The amnesia spell was necessary for authentic relationship building between Ariel and Eric. Part of animated Ariel’s motive for pursuing Eric was to get a kiss to avoid becoming one of Ursula’s victims. Sure she was “in love”, but that ulterior motive was still there. Without that extra weight of having to get that kiss, live action Ariel was able to enjoy her time on land without having to worry about a kiss and she and Eric were able to connect organically, sincerely, and without her having to essentially force herself on him. Another thing, Ursula ALWAYS played dirty and sneaky. That’s why her eels flipped the boat during kissed the girl and that’s why she turned herself into Vanessa. She’s a villain. If she played fair, Ariel would’ve gotten her kiss day two. There are lots of valid critiques of this film and it goes without saying that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i think a lot of the same complaints I keep hearing are done without taking into account this if this movie existed in a world without nostalgia and the hypercriticism that comes with that, it would be regarded very differently.
@maya-parisan
@maya-parisan 11 ай бұрын
You bring up very good points. One thing I'd like to add is that Triton and Ursula were actually conceived as siblings during the production of the animation, but they dropped the idea (or at least didn't mention it explicitly in the movie). The idea was brought back for the Broadway musical in which Ursula sings her whole back story during the song Daddy's Little Angel.

Success, loved it and no other movie except pride and prejudice 2005 ever made me go back to theaters more than once, and I’ve gone 7 times, turns out I don’t need anti depressants, I needed the little mermaid lol. I’ll only get to watch it twice more this week than I leave to go overseas so I’ll be extra emotional these next couple times I watch 😭 it’s an amazing magical gorgeous movie with so much talent and I loved it more than the original.

Dude the Little Mermaid is my favorite animated film....no my favorite Disney Film and Ariel my favorite Princess.....the last thing I will ever do is support a boring imitation of this film, and I not heard anything good coming from most sides, and even of it was....a world that THIS thing replace the original (something Disney was actually trying).....nahh man I can't, this film is forever in my BLACKLIST, never to be seen and never to be supported, as well ALL OTHER LIVE ACTION DISNEY ADAPTATIONS....all are trash, I not going to support corporate imitations of films that have not an inch of the soul, passion and true magic, classic Walt Disney put on them, sorry mate, any positives on this is a huge loss to the OG and I hope the new generations not watch this one instead of the Original-

The Little Mermaid is my all time favorite Disney movie. Personally I will not be watching the new film, I don’t like the new elements they added to the story. Ariel has been reduced to nothing more than a strong independent female type character who doesn’t need the help of a man (or anyone for that matter). I wasn’t upset about the casting choice originally but I think it is very disingenuous to label the fans who grew up with the OG Ariel as racists. The main criticism that I’ve seen lobbied against the film are the drab and lifeless visuals, not the race of certain characters. It also doesn’t help when the marketing of the film is inherently preachy. Hollywood has an extensive track record of race swapping established characters and lambasting the fans as racists when they call them out for doing the bare minimum to champion diversity. It all ends the same way. The film flops and the fans are blamed, even tho they were told repeatedly that the film wasn’t made for them. Thankfully, people are starting to wake up.

Disney makes new stuff all the time with or without POCs and if they choose to tell a story that typically is related to the struggles of marginalised groups, they’ll use animals like in Zootopia or Elements like in Elementals. If you don’t need another remake, don’t watch another remake. Who is holding you at gun point forcing you to watch them?

One of the problems with the new black Ariel is that there isn't room for the two of them, if there was they wouldn't replace the white Ariel actors in Disney land/world with black actors. Not only that, now you are racist if you prefer one over the other. Not only that, every future version of Ariel is going to be black. No more white Ariel because that would be rasist. I don't mind a black mermaid, not at all, but making specifically Ariel black will undoubtedly create disappointment in an over 30 years old fanbase. People are used to white Ariel and want to recognize her in live-action and any future media, Bailey's version feels fan made at best. If Black Panter was replaced with a white actor it would be racist outcry all over the world, if it's wrong one way how can it be right the other way. Ariel was white in the original Anderson story and it's a remake of the Disney version with a named white character. It's like making snow white Latino when the character is obviously supposed to be white. Her acting is terrible, she shows no emotions in her face. She can sing i'll give her that, but considering both that her appearance doesn't resemble original Ariel and her acting wasn't good she was definitely not the best choice. She was chosen because she was black and because she can sing. I much rather have a unique story about a black mermaid starring a good actor that also can sing than a lesser version of a classic that affect the future appearance of a beloved character forever. The only good thing about the remakes is the love and appreciation the originals get from disappointed fans.

I totally agree. Moreover Halles mole in the face gives Ariel a specific "Halle" recognition, which destroys Ariels appreance further more. Ariel has no molt on the forhead, they should have covered it. I cannot agree to the singing. Disney did a very bad job on the songs by not orchetering it well enough, maybe thats why her voice mostly sounds stange at the beginning of some songs. But her voice is terrible. I am quite sure that there are different videos out there which explain the badness of the songs in a more professional way than I do it right now. You will find some for sure. Ppl who work in this area wont find her a "good" singer at least not in this disney songs. Dont know other songs of her, as I actually do not care for her at all. But saying that, makes you racist, too. Critising Halle makes you racist, too. Then it is Dinseys fault, as the produced the film, not the actress. The truth is, taht she selled herself to the company without checking everything out. Beyonce always checked the videos, lighting etc. When she didnt give the go, the video wasnt published. Halle is a singer, she gave it a go. She was the actress and gave the bad lighting of her skin, the bad acting and everything the go. She didnt care that she looked like an Alien as long as she gets cash- no pitty for such recklessness. She wanted it, she has to go through it. For that she got paid. She got the role only because she is black and can sing. Disney wanted to sell tons of music cds next to the movie... you do not have to be smart to see that. All of the sudden, every1 gets a song, all wishy-washy for a broad audiance. In the original Ariel doesnt sing that much, now Ariel can sing even without a voice... mkaaay.

A lots of Controversy. The part . were Sebastian and the Chef fighting at the kitchen no more existed . Why? To much changes and cultural swap are not good. No classic memories regarding this Little Mermaid. So sad that the Long straigh red hair and soft white skin are replacing by disney cultures swap. No originality like The little mermaid 1989.

Disney's version was always tropical with the coral reefs and flamingos. Changing the setting to be specifically Caribbean is therefore an improvement. The fact that you have a fetish for white red-haired girls is your issue unrelated to the movie.

"she is the best actress for ariel... cry about it!"- totally disagree with it. first of all, we do not know who else was in audition. secondly, she is a very, very, very bad actress. If you say different, you are not honest. thirdly, she was casted as she is black and can sing (which makes disney rasist by the way). They produced tons of very bad orchestered songs to sell them next to the film. this is captain obvious. To be honest, she is not suchg a good singer either, but this is some task matter. Saying, that she is casted as she is the best version of Ariel eventhough she is a bad actress, a not so good singer and doesnt even look close to Ariel and brings her own body specifivations (moled in the face) which is not an Ariel specification but only and solit a Halle specification, makes you a bit unhonest. You can sy, that you liked it, but this attribute is not a casting reason. it is also disrespectfull to all other ppl you have been to audition. totally dislike from my part.

Using your logic, nobody with a mole should be cast in anything ever, unless a character is specifically described to have one. Was it really that much worse than casting a blue-eyed boy to play green-eyed Harry Potter? There are plenty of actors that don't fit the character description. You seem very selective in your outrage, and you should ask yourself why.
