@@pistonburner6448 I only charge at home in my garage. The CE-04 is 100% an urban bike with similar range to the Livewire, if this review is accurate. I ride it every day, often 75km+, and I have never got close to needing public charging. Not even once.

I owned a Nissan Leaf for a decade, put over 100,000 miles on it. We drove it about 40 miles a day at the top end, with a very few days over 120 miles. As a “local riding” bike, it would be perfect. A commuter, run to the local grocery store, running out to the local restaurant kind of vehicle, it is just right. I’d love to see a true fast charging option, as 10 kWh would be charged by a DC Fast Charger in about 6 minutes. That would make all the difference, and allow for long distance travel.
@stefanjepp6612
@stefanjepp6612 2 ай бұрын
Fast charging is not a good idea for a 10 kWh battery. I think it would degrade quickly. So better wait a bit longer at the charger. What I would wish is AC 11 kWh, 3 phase charging. This would mean less than 1 h from 0 tob100 Percent.

I've been on a BMW CE-04 for a couple of months now - traded my R1250GSA for it - and felt ~exactly what you described: without the management of engine/transmission there's so much more time in the moment to focus on everything else. So glad to hear someone else have the same experience. I love it and I really don't feel like riding any of my other bikes anymore. I recommend every skeptical biker put their reservations aside for half an hour and try the bike you've reviewed here.

Road a Zero SR-F (I believe was the model) about a year back. Great quality build. Beautiful looking machine. Super comfortable. Instant torque. Unbelievable riding experience. Didn’t miss the petro noises at all, in fact it led to a better over all experience. The lack of clutch required some getting used to be I did so quickly. The negatives were: 1) Range (100 miles), and Cost: $23K+😮. Couldn’t justify that purchase at all. Wanted a Live Wire1 but stayed away for same reasons. This bike, though nicely packaged, is a “second bike” for people with extra money to spend on a strictly around town bike. Now where can I find 20K? 😢

If i had the cash to splash i would be interested in this, maybe one day in the future would make a good second hand buy, but i cant see them selling too well at that price. To everyone slagging it off this bike would make an amazing commuter machine for somone with a 30 mile trip and those level 2 chargers are everywhere already with more going in all the time. Or just for someone who doesnt do massive road trips and doesn't mind stopping regularly. I do think they should have a put ccs charger on it, as stopping for 15mins to juice up 80% would make this much more practical for longer trips.

Engine noise or lack of it is a very small concern to me. I do like the torque and the fact it gets going quickly. But, it would be nearly impossible for me to buy one of these because almost every time I get on my bike, I ride over 100 miles. I guess I will need to wait until the range is improved and wait until chargers are more readily available.
@williambrown6080
@williambrown6080 9 ай бұрын
I get the enthusiasm for these things due to the amazing torque. For me, the negatives are the range(40-80 miles is woeful) and the lack of sound to stir the emotions. I would not say never but there are some serious improvements required before i'll give up my SF SP2 or V4S Sport Multistrada. Bikes are an emotional purchase and sound has such an important part to play on that but I'll concede, that ain't the worst looking bike.
@ChromeMouth
@ChromeMouth 9 ай бұрын
Del Mar owner here, couple things: • The "mid-40's to mid-80's" is a very conservative number. Driving solely in sport mode (lower regen and more snappy throttle) I usually average between 75-85 miles before I decide to throw it on the charger, and that's usually with 18-25% charge remaining (likely an easy 10-15 more miles absolutely hucking it). • Unless you're in the 'loud pipes save lives' club, you won't feel too bad with the sounds it produces, especially under ample acceleration. More of what I miss is the ability to willfully make any sounds besides the horn, otherwise, it's not too bad on that front. Short summation is it indeed doesn't hit all of the usual motorcycle emotional notes, but it brings in new ways to feel like an absolute giggling child to level things back out, not to mention the humor of never entering a gas station on the thing haha!

@ChromeMouth
@ChromeMouth 9 ай бұрын
@@kevinspalding5470 it's perfectly in the price realm (15k for non-launch edition bikes) of any similar electric rival, and not staggeringly beyond most new, nicer middleweight nakeds (10-12k new). Saying 17 is being a bit unfair, and besides that, maybe you're comparing used bike value to new bike prices, which is also a smidge unfair. Also getting ~100 miles per charge in daily commuting is 10-15 miles below par with what my monster 821 sees, and obviously in highway usage you start to slide that number back farther. Nobody is buying an electric bike to intend to travel (presuming that's your intent with 'adventures'), if you are, you're either admitting you want that challenge or you're not thinking clearly. It's a machine for commuting primarily, with the ability to day-trip in a reasonable range, period. Any more is either your choice of sadistic faire, or plain unfair comparison. (Charging, outside of sunny California, that one's a fair shot but that's no fault of the bike.)

I think we need to start talking about rear wheel torque when we compare ICE and electric bikes, just to have a more realistic comparison. Of course, the torque number will be different for each gear when a gearbox is involved, but maybe just compare top gear but note what the torque is in other gears.
@sunrisejak2709

How about torque output per mile covered? Or something that takes into consideration of the application of that torque demonstrating its not very efficient considering the distance covered.

@phillipbatho3213 9 ай бұрын
@@sunrisejak2709 I'm not sure I'm following what you mean? I was talking about how torque is calculated for the output shaft of the motor or engine, but torque is increased through gear ratio reduction. Since the ICE engine crankshaft has more reduction in the way to the rear axle, especially in lower gears, comparing the torque the way we do doesn't really give an accurate impression.

@@phillipbatho3213 I was inappropriately being a bit sarcastic. Meaning lots of torque but with the short range it will go away quickly meaning endurance is bad. But in a gas bike maybe less torque but over 250 miles you can apply overall more of it. Sorry my fault that my thoughts didn't translate. The range is so bad that you won't get much opportunity to experience all that torque. I gotta think a bit more before I type! 😊

Only bad thing about solid state batteries is the inefficient draw speed for power. Solid state batteries are possible, but are more effective in low energy and power applications. I would say the styling is great. Sadly I think the battery technology is the real problem. Once you can double the range for the same battery mass, it would be something to consider but as it stands it's not enough. A riding day for me is about 150miles of country roads with a couple stops for lunch and snacks totaling an hour or something. Time is limited with work and kids so I want to enjoy riding and not sitting down waiting for a charge. If I can get an electric motorcycle that's about 200Kg and a range of 200miles and around 100bhp I would consider it (once they come up second-hand at no more then 10K). And I'm talking about a motorcycle from a brand that's isn't some "funky" EV startup. Good for others if they see this as a great option, power to them. The electric future for motorcycles isn't here for me yet.

Why doesn't the bike have a reverse gear? Electric motors run either direction, It's just a relatively simple control function.

It would be great for commuting if you could charge it at work... however as a weekend toy aprox 50 miles is nowhere near enough. Battery tech will have to improve massively before these things will be a viable substitute for IC for the vast majority of us. The huge question is can battery energy density at very least double in the foreseable future? Anyone know whats on the horizon in future battery tech?

Just like ICE bikes, depends on fuel stations. I believe it's quite easy to do a 200 mile day on these. Distance covered is relative. In Texas, not an issue if roads are straight and unfettered. Here in VA, however, 200 miles through mountains would take all day, if not 2 days, to cover.

40-60 miles range is 100% unusable for most people. I do more than that in a day on commutes.I have 400km home to DK. That would be impossible with this bike.

Just a rich persons toy £17K for a going to the shops bike, 40 to 80 mile range and price shows everyone how far away we are from going electric, there is not enough range for me to get to Devils Bridge and back for a local bike meet. I am sure it feels great to ride, but only for an hour, then you may need the AA

I find these engine torque values a fairly useless measurement, considering they don't say anything about gear reduction, and therefore dont tell you how much torque you have at the rear wheel. For example if this motor runs at lower RPM than a different motor, and therefore has less gear reduction, the rear wheel torque and therefore acceleration may still be lower than that on a bike with less engine torque but more reduction. Obviously electric bikes are very impressive, but to express that with a number that is comparable between bikes (EV and ICE), shouldn't it be rear wheel torque at different speeds? You'd have to consider gear selection on ICE bikes of course. I can produce several hundred pound-feet of torque easily with my legs when riding my pedal bike for example, but i doubt I'd out-sprint any motorcycle.

If it improves the range in these "haulers", we can consider them. But for now it's a "big mistake." And remember that these batteries lose their efficiency over time.

If you keep the battery constantly hot, yes it will damage the battery. However as a lower voltage battery that can only take 240v or less, it's less prone to damage unless you realllllyyy try to damage it.

I'm so goddamned tired of seeing the "stressed member" chassis thing as a selling point. At this point, in 2023 whether electric or ICE powered - whatever lies IN THE CENTER OF THE VEHICLE had better damned well be a stressed member of the chassis. It's not 1976 anymore where a bicycle or motorcycle engine is simply bolted to a frame. Even the most basic of manufacturing processes understand this, so if you have a ginormous BATTERY in the middle of your two wheeled vehicle, - it had better goddamned well be a stressed member.

Range of mid-forties to mid-eighties? All for £17,000? Doesn’t matter how good the torque is, ride quality, brakes or overall build quality is; for that price and poor range it’s definitely NOT worth it! Utterly delusional to think that’s a good deal.

Zero interest in electric bikes (or cars). I tried it and it’s not the answer. Sure, get a test ride, but make sure it’s a short one. If you tried to do one of your tours around Europe on one of these you’d be spitting bullets.

If any other device you owned was noisy, got incredibly hot, spewed poisonous gas and leaked fluids everywhere you'd think it was junk yet somehow these traits are desirable on a motorbike. The range isn't there yet and it's too expensive but electric vehicles are much better technology.

I am very much looking forward to a time when electric motorcycles hit their stride, but come on. Most riders want their bikes to retain every drop of the fluids necessary for the bike to function, and "spewing poisonous gas" is how The Joker terrorizes Gotham City.

Modern ices are very clean not as clean as electric of course. Ev technology is nowhere near as good as it needs to be to tempt me anytime soon, speaking to mercedes ev owner hasnt helped..... they went on holiday just after purchase and spent a lot of time finding charging points, queuing, navigating to another point when first one wasnt in service (as did everyone else so more queuing.... 😮) May be good someday but right now ... no thank you.

"It has194 lb-ft of torque"..... No, it doesn't. At least not compared to crank torque on a conventional gasoline motorcycle. I'm so tired of torque figures with EVs. It's not apples to apples. For example; a Dodge Hellcat has over 8000 lb-ft of wheel torque in first gear...... But what does that mean? Nothing, really. It means Torque numbers can be manipulated by gearing and wheel size. As this bike has no transmission, there's no direct comparison when it comes to torque on ICE motorcycles. I rode the Zero SR/S with a supposed 140 lb-ft of torque. I've ridden enough bikes to know that that's not what 140 lbft of torque feels like on other bikes. It should've ripped my shoulders out of the socket or flipped over backwards. It didn't. not even close. The HP number appears to give a more accurate picture.
