If you’re in the market for a new LED strip to add to your Apple HomeKit home, you’ve more than like seen the incredibly long Meross MSL320 LED strip and wondered whether or not this is the right product for you.
As with most things in life, it depends on what you’re actually going to be using for.
Understanding the specific use-case that you’re looking at addressing is the best possible way to make sure you don’t through away your hard earned cash into a product that you’re not going to be happy with.
The Meross LED strip is listed as a 10m strip, but it’s actually two 5m strips with a Y connector which definitely makes it the longest Homekit compatible LED strip on the market today. And this is definitely where this product will shine. (No pub intended)
If you’re looking to have a color LED strip for a Childs room or as a background accent lighting AND you don’t really care about the rest of the attributes ( brightness, color fidelity, dynamic affects ) than the Meross can’t be beat. It’s by far the best value if all you’re worried about is distance covered.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for an LED strip to use for functional lighting (to brighten up a working space ), or generally you want to have your colors match what you THINK they look like…. You might want to pass on the Meross and look at something from Nanoleaf or Vocolinc who happen to be in the same price range, but are a LOT brighter and have a much better build quality and color fidelity.

Great video! I knew their bulb was bad and hoping their light strip was better…nope lol. Excellent breakdown, loved the visuals! Keep it up dude! 👌🏽

Thanks Adam! I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s “bad”… but that probably says more about good Canadian manners than the quality of the LED strip. It’s got it’s place in my home and I’m happy with it. :)

Thanks for the video, Chris. Interesting to have the specs explained, especially the lumens and it’s helpful to weigh the price/value vs. the colour/brightness/features. Keep it up!

Thanks Brad! Yeah I’m a big believer that products all exist for the reasons and it’s just important to understand what you’re use-case is. Thanks for the support!!!

wait... the lumens is only worth it on the peak brightness which usually is at a warm white, in the case of the Nanoleaf lighstrip the warm white is specially good, but the saturation and brightness of any of the colors is on the bad side. not saying the meros is good, but nanoleafs are just a one trick pony

Good stuff. Thanks for the break down. For the price, Meross seems like a great value for basic LED's.

Absolutely. It’s one of those “If you have a large space and want some dim color capabilities” great choice. Anything beyond that though you’ll probably want to look in another direction. :)

i don't have the meross but have had the Nanoleaf lightstrips, so just gonna say that they are only really good at the warm white and they fall so bad at basically any color, red being by far one of the worst i have tried. Saw you are using lumens as a reference point but that number is only real considering the peak of the brightness that it can achieve at warm white, all the other colors are way below that, being on color saturation or brightness. Nanoleaf light strips are only ok at colors if they are your first light strips cuz you don't have a reference point (there's a good amount of HomeKit lightstrips that are way better than Nanoleafs) and they can be great if you are only after warm and cool whites

Hey Samuel! 100% in agreement with you. If I was comparing the Meross against, a "good" color strip, I'd most likely be using the LIFX LED strip as my comparison which is also twice the price of the Meross. My goal in this video was definitely to look at the "budget" options of which the Nanoleaf is probably the best quality of the budget options that I've looked at. I'd love to hear what your favorite lights strips and why? It's always interesting to me to learn how other people see these things as there's so many different use-cases out there!

Can i make it so when my phone or watch in my pocket gets senced within 16 ft it will light up

Not specifically. We don’t have presence location based on phone to that level yet. Best bet for that requirement would be to have a motion/occupancy sensor that would detect you within that range. There is geo-fencing that you could leverage but that tends to be within a larger are. Mine sometimes triggers when I’m a block or two away.
