This year marks 16 years of unrelenting war in Afghanistan between the US-backed government and the Taliban.
With no end of the war in sight, can the Taliban forces be defeated? Is reconciliation possible?
For Amrullah Saleh, who served in Afghanistan as State Minister for Security Reforms, to defeat the Taliban, US-backed forces must focus on Pakistan instead, calling its southern neighbour the 'root cause' of violence.
'Go to the source, and go to the root cause of this,' says Saleh, who also served for six years as the leader of Afghanistan's spy agency, the National Directorate of Security. 'What the United States does need is [to] come out with more clarity and tell the Pakistanis: We know what you are doing and we are a superpower, but we do not have super-patience.'
In this week's Headliner, Mehdi Hasan challenges former Afghan security official Amrullah Saleh on why he believes the US needs to change its strategy in order to more effectively combat the Taliban.

He made mincemeat of this presenter even though this questions were good. AS responded very well to all the questions, and With high conviction. He is a very knowledgeable and educated individual 👏. It was a good interview, and everything he said about the US strategy was so accurate!

They were very good and direct questions actually, and meant to expose any weakness, but I did not see any; just calm, informed and well delivered responses. Knowing what we do now, for me, everything fits into place accurately.

@@ajfna3432 I agree with you, to a large degree, though the question about alleged human rights abuses at the hands of the Afghan security services - well, he could have done better to be frank. Dismissing this as some kind of agenda from a number of NGOs etc. doesn't do him any favour. Having said that, I must say that the man is a visionary (I've just discovered him to be honest - I've now watched a few of this interviews - and Yes - he did predict the situation that Afghanistan is facing now.

one thing is to be agreed about so called amurallaha salhay , his father and mother came to Pakistan as refuge , then pakistan graved him education and let him to gain US scholarship to further education, then he become a pipit of Indian RAW as they provided hefty amount of money in USD to start compain against Pakistan and their we go he has no home, again he is refuge going around in different country....he should understand at once that he was leading 350000 army personals with the help of 40 nations of army defited by 75000 thousand people...at first place he should have stood with his army and people who supported him..he ran away leving all behind.. now baging the world to give him political asylem wow what ab brave man he is...

Can we create a system that takes input from USA and outputs Islamic fatwas? Answer: Yes we can! Pakistan is a great example of such a system. USA wanted to hurt USSR in Afghanistan back in the 80s. They assigned Pakistan's ISI that has a mullah making factory called Haqqani madrassa. US dollars went to ISI and they produced cheap extremist mullahs that can kill anyone in the name of Islam. They have mullah officers that can do such things. Col. Imam was such a mullah who trained Taliban and former mujahedeen to fight against Afghan government. You really give it to these colonel mullahs on their ingenuity.

So is it true that the Pakistani government could end (or greatly reduce) the level of attacks by the Taliban and other anti-government elements is they really tried (perhaps simply by not supporting them)? If so, I think we in the US need to alter the way we provide aid to Pakistan such that the amount of money they get each year is inversely proportional to the amount of jihadist violence in Afghanistan and the number of people killed by it the in previous year. So if violence rises, they should get less money, and at a certain point not get any if it goes high enough. Conversely, they should be able to get more money, if they manage to get the level down. I would be in favor of Congress allocating billions of dollars a year for decades to Pakistan, provided that they have this requirement that they need to reduce the level of violence in order to get the full amount. I wouldn't even mind giving way more than we do now (maybe, say, $5 billion per year or so) for decades - if they were to manage to get the level of jihadist violence and terrorism down to zero. Of course, this system would only make sense if it is true that Pakistani government decisions can have a big effect on the magnitude of the jihadists' war effort.

We do not understand this map. You can think about it and it fun to see the world any areas you want. What is the truth. Where are you from. You are from 1 world one nation. I was in Canada and they are more comfortable. They treat Afghanistan Muslim very well. A is Canada and Russia and maybe Afghanistan was from there.
