The MLB is not dead yet. But there are obvious things that Major League Baseball need to do in order to thrive. I give you some of my thoughts on the changes needed.

Here are my solutions that I’ve thought long and hard of for years: 1: Pitch Clock. The NFL and NBA understood long ago that times were changing and added in game clocks. Now they’re the most popular sports in the US. Baseball is the one that never changed, never adapted, always listened to their older fans instead of younger fans and they’re a declining sport. It’s super controversial but I’d add in a 12 or 15 second pitch clock. No one wants to watch a pitcher walk around the mound for 30+ seconds only to throw to 1st base to try and pick off the runner. This would also shorten the time of the game obviously from 3 hours to about 1 1/2-2 hours (which is very good). For the east coast people the World Series starts at 8:30pm and ends almost at midnight. Now imagine it started at 8:30pm and ended between 10:00pm-10:45pm better. Or now that the game is shorter you can start the game 15-30 minutes later. 2: Other things related to game speed: Like you said, enough with the pitchers warming up. It is so annoying and extends the game time. I’ve heard old timers say how people would read the papers back then while at the ballpark. Nowadays people are on their phones. That is a problem. If the game isn’t demanding your attention why go or watch at all? Football, Basketball, Hockey and a sport that will (not maybe, it will) pass baseball in popularity in soccer, all demand your attention. 3: As you said, shorten the regular season. 162 games? 27-28 games a month? No wonder there are so many injuries. Not to mention September has the lowest attendance because we already know the playoff teams by then so fans of teams who are out simply don’t go. I’d make the regular season about 118 games maximum. Maybe less than that. 4: Play the games at night. It breaks the tradition of day games, and baseball purists would HATE it. But people are not watching baseball at 1 or 2pm. They’re at work or at school or are doing other things. Again baseball has to adapt. The NBA or NHL or Soccer isn’t holding any games on a weekday afternoon. They would know that’s a stupid idea. The MLB would make so much more money. 5: Blackout restrictions/TV Deals as you said. 6: Get away from the old mentality. Baseball needs to stop listening to “purists” and old fans who aren’t gonna be watching in 10, 20, 30 years. The “respect the game” types, the ones who hate change. The ones who don’t understand that baseball has to be fun and evolve, and let the players have fun as you said.

I couldn't have said it better myself! Thankfully they are implementing the pitch clock at least. I love the Cardinals and we watch them every day as a family but fewer games would be better, honestly.

wouldn't the pitch clock lead to more injuries as pitchers will push their limit to get fast pitches in the small window? Or perhaps that is the point? You may get more base hits and fewer homeruns, thus making the game tense an exciting again as pitches are not all rockets.

Not bad. As someone older who remembers André Dawson, Gary Carter & Tim Raines & knows that what they did wouldn't win anything today, OUST THE STEROID-USING CHEATS already!! If that includes Pujols, all the effing better! I don't get why this is avoided or controversial. Let's say your actual favorite athlete *isn't using* them: this would be the Best Thing you could do for them. If they are, well... grow tf _up!_ *You* have to work to earn _your salary,_ no? If someone got to use a shorter field, larger strike zone etc. than everyone else why tf is _this form_ of cheating any better than any other? In 1927, Paul Waner had 131 RBIs with only 9 home runs in the live ball era. The same year Ruth hit 60. He hit .431 with RISP. Mark Bonds-Canseco couldn't do this _with_ steroids, y'understand?

A salary cap is an obvious solution to some of there problems. Also I believe there needs to be some kind of salary floor. It would make the league more competitive and force teams like Oakland to build at least a semi competent team.
@loganbward

Thanks for the comment! I do think a salary cap would help. Right now it just feels like if you WANT to spend you can but you don’t have too. Which is an absolute disservice to the fans.

i definitely dont want them to shorten the season. having a baseball game on in the background everyday during the summer on the radio really enhances my day. it would suck to lose that. hell if they could play year round id listen lol.

the NBA ratings are in great decline over the long term (looking at just a small bump from 2021 to 2022 is the wrong approach as well). MLB should definitely not model the NBA lol.

I just started watching MLB again, and boy is it trash. The batters can't hit for 💩, cry about the shift, they hit for exit velocity, stealing bases is gone, I've never seen fielding like this in my life.. did I say, that it's complete trash?

Ending the season before the first weekend of September would be smart. Pennant races would heat up right after the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals. Do away with the All-Star game since it’s pointless with daily inter league play. Don’t have to worry about regular season football games squashing MLB post season games in the ratings department.

I think there should be different offense and defense teams for each team like in the NFL because most plays are just pop outs or groundouts, it’s kinda boring

MLB isn't going to go back to 154 games, never mind cut the season in half. They'll never give up that revenue - in fact, they just added more playoff games. Dollar dollar bill, y'all.
@JayTemple

Agreed. And since they seem to want every team to face every team, they'd pretty much have to cut the divisional games.

Salary cap and salary floor plus end blackouts. Cap and floor stops teams from buying championships and bad owners from tanking just so the owner can make money. Ending blackouts allows cord cutters to watch their favorite teams.

As a long time fan( over 40 years), I feel like the heart and soul have been taken out of the game. Now it's all about 99 mph fastballs, spin velocity(this is why so many pitchers blow out their arms) and home runs. Up until recently, few teams bothered to steal bases. Analytics has definitely ruined baseball in my opinion. If you want to see baseball at it's best, watch game 6 of the 86 world series. The Mets came back in spectacular fashion. They didn't win with a walk off homer. They won by getting on base stealing bases, bunting and getting base hits, ie small ball. Small ball may not make sense to analytics nerds, but it makes the game more exciting.

Here are some of my ideas that could improve the "dying" game known as baseball: 1) 7 inning games.....tie game recorded after bottom of the 9th inning during regular season 2) 132 regular season games......ending on the last week of August 3) 16 team playoffs, 7 game series each round......starting on the first week of September 4) Ability to sub in and out starting pitcher.....between innings 5) 7 player batting lineup rotation......with the ability for teams to swap or switch batters between innings
@loganbward
@loganbward Жыл бұрын
These are great suggestions! I’m okay with the 9 man batting rotation and like I said in the video I think MLB should be ending as the NFL is starting to kickoff. But I love the 7 inning games suggestion!

I have some ideas. Force all players to take pay cuts. Salary cap. Greatly reduce costs for fans to come to a game. Force players to stay on a team for at least 2 or 3 years. Create some kind of reward for players who stay on a team 5 years, bigger reward 10 years. Late games start too late. have games start at the latest 6 pm. air more games on free tv. air more free games on youtube. allow players to bulk up in a healthier way. i think a lot of fairly safe substances may be banned. dont allow intentional walks. have a limit on foul balls for each at bat. lets say 3. after 3rd foul ball, 4th foul ball is strike 3. allow the computers to call balls and strikes. its more accurate. still have the ump back there but he just calls balls and strikes as cpu indicates. just thought of something that could be fun. if outfielder robs a homerun from over the fence, he gets a run for his team. a triple play earns a run for team that pulls it off. stealing home plate, 2 runs. inside the park homerun. 2 runs. if batter hit in the head by a pitch, automatic run for his team and he gets to go sit on the bench. if a team is up by 15 or more runs in the 8th inning the game is called. These are just ideas. If a homerun is hit out of the park, 2 runs if solo. make baseball cards cheaper and easier to buy and available at more stores.

More base hits, doubles, triples, stolen bases, bunts, less homers/walks/KO......Put the damn ball in play! Less relief pitchers...Nothing drags the hell out of a game than the endless stream of relievers throwing 400 mph! Get strong starters again who can actually pitch the whole game (wow what a concept) Thankfully they are getting rid of the shift....nothing more boring than a 3rd baseman in right field taking away traditional basehits....

i think the MLB should have a home run derby when there is a tie after the 9th inning in the regular season. just like how the NHL has a shoot out after a tie game in the regular season.

Bring the pitcher's mound back about 5-10 feet to allow for more hits, decrease the number of innings to 7, shorten the regular season, allow aluminum bats, allow for upper deck homeruns to count as 2, speed up the game in between batters, eliminate umpires in favor of technology. There are many ways to improve the game that are not being done. It's not the 1930's anymore, Baseball needs an update to stay relevant and interesting to the population.

One simple way to make baseball great again... " STEROIDS" Remember McGuire vs Sosa era? The best moments in baseball i have ever lived. Even the WBC was fun to watch this year, unfortunately is not even a month of it, just less than 2 weeks.

I don't and never did follow baseball but I observed this year's ago. I said baseball is going to die out bcuz it's not cultivated anymore. It's a sport that is not relevant amongst the youth today. It's audience tend to be older men. ANYTHING that solely relies on previous generations for its relevance is was always at risk.

It's nearly impossible to "fix" baseball for the modern world. It's a product of an era where life moved more slowly and their were fewer entertainment options and distractions. And everyone played it in some form. Kids played, factories and business had teams made up of employees and they played in leagues. In small towns, baseball games at the local field were the only entertainment. The game moved at the pace of society. Any changes you make to try to make baseball more appealing to our TikTok 30 seconds society would have to be so drastic that they would alter the game beyond recognition. Baseball is a victim of the changing speed of information, shorter attentions spans, and infinite variety of distractions available.

Sadly, I'm in complete & total agreement ! The Changes that would/will need to be made ( to Adapt to A 21st Century Society ), definitely will effectively render it Unrecognizable in comparison to Mr. Doubleday's Creation. Some people said that Baseball was "forever and fundamentally changed" and "Irreparably Damaged with The Designated Hitter" ( DH ).... from a certain perspective they were correct. 😢
@TheVCRTimeMachine

@@MK007-YT I will say, the pitch clock has made the game more watchable than at any time in the last five to eight years. But I'm not sure it has done anything to bring in "new" fans.
