Hi David. Thanks for a really honest and objective view of what is definitely a massive issue not being dealt with by LR. As 2021 RR owner who fortunately has not experienced any problems in 2yrs of Happy ownership, the way LR are treating you is a major concern. The calm and positive way you are dealing with the issue is a credit to you and an example of how to deal with a customer service dept that is not attempting to address the issues you have with the vehicle so we’ll done for your manner and honesty with them. I would have expected most people inc myself by now to have thrown in the towel and invoked your customer rights and asked them for a full refund or an exchange of vehicle. “Don’t give up and I know you will not”. You have a great product albeit with a niggling issue LR AU are being far from unhelpful with here👍

Thanks for watching and the kind comments. We like the car and just want it to work as it should 100%. If we didn’t believe in the car overall we would have asked for a refund. As I hope I portrayed, the challenge is whether JLR can live up to the car’s potential because if they can provide strong backup to it, the car is brilliant. Beyond that people seem to like seeing what mods and fittings we make. Really appreciate the feedback and all the best. cheers

I guess, when it comes to Defender "curious" just gets 'curiouser'. These and other strong reliability reservations have made me go down a different brand path and I feel relieved and happy about that.I do hope you get your Defender issues resolved and enjoy the 'big lap' without the headaches that detract from the fun. Cheers

Thanks Peter’s It’s not an easy thing to do, but there is much freedom in not being a sponsored influencer or a content creator hawking for sponsors (and I genuinely have no problem with people aspiring to make a living that way- provided everybody understands the model). This is a gap year for us and the channel really was a way to share our journey etc. Buts a bit of a hobby as well. I love sharing and the market works best when everybody knows the pros and cons of their options. And no car is perfect is it?

Thanks David for another brilliant video. Also good to see the number of views slowly going up - not sure what is taking them so long!! We have a zone caravan on order and are looking, in slower time, at a tow rig upgrade - so I found your candid assessment extremely valuable - particularly your concluding summary. Good luck with the rest of your journey and I look forward to your next video. Cheers……

Thanks for the comment and feedback. Glad it’s helped. The whole youtube caper is fascinating seeing what people like and don’t like. We don’t want to get too click baity noting we aren’t trying to pump the channel for sponsors etc. But the feedback is good and we appreciate it and we’ve triggered the base amount of watch time now to get into the partnership program by we need a chunk of the returning viewers who haven’t subscribed (two thirds of our views are not yet subscribed) to subscribe and that will complete the other criteria of minimum number of subscribers. TBH I’m pleasantly surprised that we have what we have so far - because I thought we’d have a few family members and friends . So we really do appreciate that others are joining in. Best if luck with your new van and hope you have many great adventures in it. Stay in touch. cheers

Thanks so much for watching and commenting. It helps heaps. I think Some brands try a bit harder than others. And of course some aren’t selling $130k plus cars. I think you are right though that several manufacturers do flirt with their obligations.l and several new cars are going to have similar challenges. A range of new, highly technical vehicles will have a changed service approach as there will be more emphasis on recovery and module exchanges. That means that the supply chains have to be able to cope with that approach. What’s not on is signing up more and more people to an ever longer production schedule and then not being able to service the cars actually sold. Zone Review is on its way!

Thanks Jack. We will be doing a 12 month review of the van - but keep in mind the Base is no longer being made so we will try to keep our comments to things we like and don’t like so it informs considerations in van choices rather than influence peoples thoughts on a model they cant buy now - if that makes sense? eg how much power is enough and how much water etc and what we have, rather than is the Base good (it is by the way). cheers

Brilliant episode. We've recently took ownership of a Defender 110 D300 to replace our Discovery 4, which replaced our 2013 Defender 90. Your views on wheels and the front bar are especially appreciated. So nice to get some real road-tested insights and experiences based on our Australian conditions from someone who also expects their car to seamlessly transition from a safe, comfortable on-roader to a very capable off-roader.

Thanks for the honest review. I was in a similar position of deciding what to get to tow our caravan, we also have a Zone, but the long lead times, price and the experiences I have had with previous landrovers meant I got a Nissan Y62 and have been happy with it. I really like Landrovers and struggled with the decision but didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with JLR.

Hi Peter. The Y62 is a good option. Bit thirsty but big and lots of grunt. As you would have picked up, I’m not a brand tribalist. Absolutely respect the choices and individual preferences other make - provided they are operating safely (because that affects others)z Let’s face it between a Zone and a tow tug (on our case the Landie) it’s an expensive caper and people have to make sacrifices. As you’ve seen in the video, I think JLR have some work to do!

We certainly fong aim to be influencers or professional content creators so 100% of the small amount of ad revenue we earn from youtube goes to charity - the RFDS and Legacy. Don’t hesitate to comment or give feedback and while it’s a bit tough in spots we will try to make it as presentable as possible in the hope family, friends and interested followers get some enjoyment out of it also. I was in a market for an offroad and towing capable vehicle almost 2 years ago, my choices were 300, Defender and lastly the Y62. When the Defender was released, there were many reported issues with engine, drivetrain and electronics, which seems like in your case still haven't been addressed by JLR despite this car being released for so many years already. The 300 disappointingly only came with diesel which is a no-go for me from past experience with DPF and oil consumption issues. I ended up going with Y62 because of the reliable non-forced induction V8 petrol, large payload, much bigger usable boot space and the significantly reduced cost. I'm happy I go down that path because the Y62 is a hugely capable vehicle which is severely underrated by many media outlet due to its age but it's lack of electronic driving assistant tech means they kept cost down and at the same time keeping reliability up. The dollars I saved $60k-ish (paid $97k driveaway for a Ti-L) buys me petrol for entire life of the vehicle + spares to spend towards mods. My fuel consumption is under 13L/100km fully loaded to the max on highway believe it or not, towing gets me low 20s, so in the end considering the size and payload of the Y62 if all things being equal, it uses the same amount of fuel as its alternative diesel powered competitors. In saying that, the Patrol Y62 don't really have a competitor, it's in it's own class and category, that is until Toyota decides to bring the petrol V6TT 300 to Australia.

Thanks for watching and your comment. You absolutely have to make the decision you are most comfortable with. Several of the engine issues I was aware of related to the four cyclinder cars which LR have discontinued. And yes a new model car will have some issues they need to resolve. I didn’t really like the LC300 and it wasn’t available at the time I got the Defender in any case. I preferred diesel to petrol and there had been some well known DPF issues with the Toyotas. Snd we liked the Defender. Time will tell if we made the right decision and if JLR can support it the way it should. What are you towing and what mods have you had to make to the Y62 to help towing?

Welcome to the channel and thanks for the feedback. It is a stunning vehicle - but of course it has to work as it’s designed to as well!! As you will see if you follow the channel - we have a few dramas to come but let’s hope you’re right. I have generally thrives on challenges and going some of the places we want to has some challenges (not too many) hence an off road car and van. But we are persisting and sending fa bit more off to help RFDS and Legacy is just about ensuring we do a little bit of good for others as well. Thank you and hope you subscribe and watch and help us send a couple more shekels off to those causes as we go. All the best.

Hi David, sorry to hear about your problems, we have also been through the JLRA wringer. Their cars are exactly as you describe , awesome to drive or tow with, but their reliability, back up support from JLRA and the costs involved with repairing them are next level bad. To cut a long story short we had a SDV6 Range Rover that had a total engine failure at 90,000K 3 months out of warranty. JLRA did support us at the time with a good contribution (not 100%) to a new engine (replacement cost $50,000) but we lost use of the car for 2 months. From that point we had intermittent stuttering problems that they couldnt resolve, the local dealer charged us $2000 a time over 6 months to replace parts that didn't resolve the problem, and then proposed replacing a turbo charger @ a cost of $7500. At that point we baulked and eventually found a 3rd party range Rover specialist to look at it. He resolved the issue in 2 weeks by reinstalling all the engine software (which he believed the local JLRA dealer had screwed up). Anyone reading this that needs out of warranty help, we can't recommend RovaRange in Moorabbin Vic highly enough. Jason saved us thousands, and months of fustration. Summary awesome cars, but a ticking time bomb for major problems. The 5 year warranty will now at least give you an opportunity to flip them before warranty runs out. Ours was in the 3yr warranty days

Wow. Sorry to hear all that. We are persisting and I’ve followed them up again on the hope they don’t just think the problem has gone away. Thanks David for good review. Wow! In 2021 we were looking for a new tow vehicle and the D300 was on short list, then the dealer says but the car you order today wont have this and that due to chip shortage (centre digital dash for one thing that was dropped and it was brilliant). The 12 month delays were also starting to bite and no guarantee that the car we drove would be the car you get. We hesitated then a 4 month old less than 9000km SR5 Hilux popped up (it was a lease handback due to many businesses failing). We purchased the Hilux and now after towing our AOR Matrix van the length and breadth of OZ over 30000km of so many horrible outback Len Beadell rds, etc. we have had not one issue of complaint or warranty. We also had so many bullbars to choose from, specced it back from 18inch wheels to the much better 17's with a huge range of tyres, GVM upgrades with amazing suspension choices, gadgets galore out there and backup literally everywhere and all service parts at Repco/Supercheap, etc. Services at Toyota Dealer with a video of the service taking place, plenty of towing power with an amazing torque curve on this latest 2.8 engine, 14.6L per 100km towing anywhere. Now I know that this Hilux dropping in our lap was the right decision and sooo glad we have not fallen back into the Landrover death trap of a brilliantly designed vehicle 'executed' and buggered with the usual shitty LR manufacture and even shitty'er' service. And all this from a guy (me) whom has owned 9 LR's but stopped at the horrible Series 3 with gearbox bits falling on the ground and timing chains disintegrating, had UK relatives working their lives at the Solihull plant (designing amazing gun ships on 6 wheel versions for the Saudis) and headed up a State Landrover Club for some years in a previous lifetime. Such a pity.....they could be so good.

Hi Peter, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Apologies for the delayed response. I missed this comment 🤦‍♂️. It's vexing isn't it that the best concept is let down by execution? In your case the AOR is a good weight for the Hilux, which isn't an option for our van. They've had their DPF issues, but great you've had no problems at all. That's the aim. As you've seen, we aren't car brand (or van brand) tribal. There are good and bad for sure, but it has to suit your needs. AOR was in our top 5 down selected shortlist. Thanks again. This a great video, as an owner of a Discovery 4 for 5 yrs we are the same we love the car and just want it to work, it's a 10 yr car for us to get out and about in this great country of ours. Unfortunately, we have also had issues with JLR completely agree with you about their treatment of customers and the quickness to just make it hard so you go away. The fact that they are stepping away from the vehicle brand as you noted if I was on the board would be asking questions. Not a great look. Will a Defender be in our future don't know, I like them, and also the tech does not worry me but like you, not a brand loyalist. It’s a hard thing to try to be fair and make sure you are constructive especially since we aren’t trying to be a professional travel or review channel. I understand the love hate relationship Landie owners have. And in our case we hope we resolve it and that we don’t have something go wrong at the wrong moment. Hopefully I was clear - we support the car and it’s concept otherwise we wouldn’t have kept it. We just want this issue resolved so it doesn’t play on our confidence in the car. @@nextleveloz Yep have already subscribed and will share with some Landie friends. Nice to see a channel that has something different, not a Toyota 😂to travel around OZ. On the problem of ECU's all coming to life when the doors are open, here is a hack that we do with the Discovery that might work with the Defender. First once camp is setup, we try to get anything out of the car that we require and not open the front doors. We then lock the car, and open the rear tailgates (we have a second fridge and drawer system), which does not activate the all the ECU's. Assuming the weather is good we leave the top tailgate open, the car then goes back to sleep and seems to stay asleep as long as we keep the front doors closed. Other Disco owners we know keep the drivers door slightly open, which seems to have the same affect but is not ideal at every campsite. It would be nice for vehicle manufacturers to include a button to activate a "camping" mode, which puts the car into some sort of sleep function, maybe only keeping the body control module active and shutting the others down. That would be a a handy mod, for any modern touring vehicle. Cheers

As a previous long term Land Rover owner, I would agree that Land Rover is by far the best large SUV to drive in OZ. I also agree that any modern vehicle can and possibly will break down. But Land rover have less than 30 dealerships Australia wide compared to more than 250 for Toyota. And after having my Discovery on a tray back for over 650km just to get to a dealer to get a minor issue, but one that made it undriveable, resolved, in my experience is more of an issue than whether or not they could break down.
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
It’s the big dilemma isn’t it. I think the old adage that some cars are easy for bush mechanics to fix on the road etc is passing by very quickly and many cars like ours increasingly will rely on recovery and module exchanges. So it’s the challenge. Setting aside the issue we’ve had (and issues others have had) the toss up is the nominal car performance vs what the backup is if it breaks. So do you buy a car that isn’t that good or comfortable or can barely tow what you have or have to spend many $10ks more on basic mods or do you chance the car being better and accept the risk of recovery to a far flung place? I know if people who have had Toyotas recovered to a much closer dealer on a remote location but then been stuck for weeks awaiting a part. Vs recovery over a very large distance to a major centre.

Great video and glad were able to help you with a few mods for your Journey. The 4WD / 2WD issue we have heard of before, considering that, supprised you havent had it fixed. Let us know how you go. It does seem to be a real pain point that when something cant be fixed easily the usual good service goes out the window. And especially if you have accesories. It would be fantastic to see Landrover go Above and Beyond like they did for you, but without the fight.👌🏽👍🏽

Thanks Ben. Keep up the good work mate. The door table is terrific and I should have showed a closeup of the phone mount which is my HEMA mount at the moment. I can’t say it enough. JLR might just have stumbled onto a brilliant car and the question is can they adjust the service and backup to live up to that car. I’m confident the 2WD issue should be fixable - so it’s frustrating to say the least. They know what the design conditions are otherwise the warning process wouldn’t exist. Let’s see. I’ve been very clear that if we can get it addressed and we get around the country safely in some of the remote places we are going - that has to be the success metric.

@@rmp9233 Hi. One of the other guys on the New Defender Australia facebook group shared the LR Topix instructions for the removal. It’s a bit fiddly but not hard if you follow it step by step. You have to isolate the battery etc in case you hit something to set airbags off, but the worst ir hardest part is actually lifting the seats out - so you need a friend for that bit in particular. It’s just a bit tight and to avoid damaging or scratching things at that particular lift and ease out bit it’s better if there are two people. I’m on the road and for the life of me can’t find where i saved the instructions. So not straight forward but not hard either.

I had an idea of what may be causing the flick back to 2wd. I have a disco 4 and found after I had the brakes done the abs would activate when turning. After a visual inspection I noticed the abs sensors cable runs very close to the calliper and thought they may have stretched the lead while replacing the brakes. I ordered 2 new leads for $100 total fitted them myself and it fixed it. It corrected the issue. Its a fairly cheap fix in the scheme of things and other than pulling a wheel off and undoing a retaining nut it was a very straight forward install 15 mins per side.

Thanks for the review. Finally we have detailed review from an owner who is actually out there doing what this vehicle is built for. I am a proud owner of a 2023 90. I have not had the chance to take it seriously off-road as yet apart from a jaunt to Connondale Nat. Park and thus it has not really been stressed. I am looking at adding OEM roof rack, steps and the roo bar (not the nudge bar) before heading out later this year. I had the same opinion of the roo bar, though it is what is available. I am wanting to keep as close to stock and OEM spec. as possible to avoid any conflicts with what is quite a sophisticated vehicle. One recent review from the US had gone through a suspension lift, even though he had the air suspension. Low and behold he breaks down on what appeared to be a well formed track with suspension failure. He had to be ‘recovered’. Poor old LandRover gets it in the neck on reliability even though it was a mod. that failed. I sympathise with your experience with the dealer, by the way. Hope you get resolution and get on and enjoy your gap year. Your sentiment to this vehicle is shared - thus far, amazing even if only in mall crawler mode temporarily.

As a land rover guy myself my last cars were the Discovery 2, Discovery 3 & RR sport. I did look at the Defender but as this will probably be the last expensive 4WD I can afford as I'm hitting 60 next year I bought the LC 300 Sahara. My concern was reliability but also resale value. The trade in offer for my RR sport was a joke so I ended up keeping it for a second car. The car has ben into ARB for the usual host of aftermarket modifications that are easily done on the cruiser including GVM upgrade. Having watched several of your video's now I am sure my choice was a wise one.

Thanks for watching and the comment. Much appreciated. I’m not brand tribal so people have to do what suits them best. The 300 wasn’t available for us in any case but we’ve also felt the all up cost after necessary modifications was too expensive. And TBH we’ve seen a couple on tilt beds on this trip so hopefully whatever those issues were get worked out as the model is bedded in. Even my Toyota die hard friends who told me not to buy a Landie also suggested not to buy the very first 300s - but as I say the model wasn’t even in production when we bought so it wasn’t a consideration. I hear you on the LRs and like others I hope the Defender does prove to be a great marque for the brand. I hope you have many safe and enjoyable motoring kms and adventures in your 300 and maybe we will see you on the road. All the best and hoe you keep watching and we can send that ad revenue off to charity in the bargain 😉!

Hi Ian. We have put a false floor in and have the fridge all strapped in so it wasn’t practical to pull it apart where we are for the video. I will see if I have some photos when I did the mod. I should have video’s it but we weren’t sure if we’d be hosting the channel at that stage , sorry. Wind noise - great question. We do get a bit around the mirrors and of course the roof rails and maxtrax create a bit, but much less than wit the expedition rack. And yes we did consider changing the battery when we had the battery charging issue, but when LR finally changed it under warranty it’s been holding charge well since then - so given the other issues and time we didn’t pursue the lithium battery. But Id be interested to hear how others go with that. Anything that saves a few KG and also helps keep power up is a good thing isn’t it! Thanks for the comment and if I get a chance over the next few weeks I might post a “short” or do an “answers to your question” update. cheers mate

Thank you for candid and fair appraisal of your JLR experience. Tend to agree with all your sentiments… did you consider D5 when choosing Defender? What swung you to your final choice?
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching and the question. No we didn’t consider the D5. TBH it was the fact we liked the package of the Defender with its promise of greater off-road capability and we liked it better. I was wary of buying a Land Rover and a friend who had a Discovery had had his own issues. So the only thing thing that helped us decide LR was the Defender which we had researched , dealt with towing related capacities. The axle rating issue and Cruisemaster review threw a spanner in our considerations and we had pretty much decided the Defender wouldn’t work for us, until we discovered by looking at the specs the fact the 7 seater had a slightly higher axle capacity and we decided we’d pay the extra price. We also found one that was going to be available roughly in time to prepare it for the delivery of our van as well. It was 2021 so pandemic year 2 and the choices were limited. There was very little - except service coverage - that we particularly liked about the LC 300. We didn’t hate it but we liked the Defender much more. LC300s had been delayed in any case. We left open the option of paying an exorbitant amount to buy a LC200 and then more to modify it . But so all up we preferred the car itself and against the advice of my Toyota driving friends we bought it. So even right now as we are dealing with another issue we are doing our best to reinforce and want the Defender to succeed - but there was no other Land Rover that would have tempted us to take the risk on service culture.

Scan gauge can clear faults on the go - ie you don’t need to do the stop/start tech help desk reset routine- not a fix but might give you some more convenience and confidence in situations where you don’t want a failure. Hi David, as another relatively new D300 SE owner in Brisbane we are enjoying your videos. We are up to 20k km and have had it lose some Terrain Response functionality just once when on Fraser, when I think a sensor probably got dirty, but it quickly recovered. Other than that it has been great, and tows our Patriot camper like a dream. How have you found the Drifta 270 awning, and was it easy to attach to your roof bars?
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the comments, we really appreciate it. It’s a beast when it’s working on song isn’t it! And so it should work. We’ve had our issue occur on Fraser, on Teewah, on city roads on country roads, o. sealed roads on good gravel and poor gravel. We can reset it after stopping, powering down and alarming and then “rebooting” (switch off switch on) but of course we shouldn’t have to. We think (touch wood) it’s more likely to happen in comfort mode or auto terrain select than if we proactively select a specific terrain mode, but that means we are using that terrain mode - say sand mode - more than we should. It does tow well and should certainly easily tow your Patriot camper. Let’s hope we get it resolved so we can enjoy the car 100%. I love the Drifta 270. It’s slightly smaller (narrower down the side) than some but good rain proofing, easy and light. Civets the back well. Easy to mount (just make sure you have a helper and ideally cover paintwork on the roof over the doors. Just sayin from a friend🙄). The aero bars are quite long and as the car roof has the prominent taper the rear two bars stuck out a long way and the eye was a prominent gap between the awning and car roof. So i cut the bars shorter down that side to get the awning closer. It was a bit more awkward with the expedition rack as it has a curved side and my suggestion is to get some longer brackets than the standard drifta ones if you fit to the expedition rack. Thanks again and hope you keep enjoying our shared journey. cheers

Hi David, I just found your site & watched the video. Great video Thorough & honest I’ve had a very bad experience with JLR Australia Customer Service ! They are shockingly bad with NOT supporting their product. This issue sadly adds to the bad reputation LR have. No wonder LR Australia are not getting repeat buyers of their product ! I absolutely loved my Disco Sport, but a regular issue with Timing Chain was hugely annoying. Was a 2017 D180 132 kw / 430 nm Anyway… Battery drainage is a Defender problem, for the reasons u described. JLR need to add a “ camping mode “ to the car. In this mode, Pivi Pro and other items should stay fully off, so that a lot of unnecessary battery power does not get consumed, when u open doors / rear tailgate etc… As a preventative maintenance measure, I’d definitely change the oil & filter every 10,000 kms or max 15,000 kms U have 18” wheels on a D300. So, I presume some adjustments were done so that they would fit over the brakes ?? I will have a look at your other videos in coming weeks Cheers. 👍

Thanks for watching and the feedback. It was an interesting consideration. Funny enough the need to recover in the case of a serious break down didn’t worry us too much. I reckon many modern cars won’t be fixed west of the divide if they have a serious issue. If they can’t be dealt with immediately they will be recovered to a dealer. And even then might take ages for major parts. It’s that latter bit. If your service model is recovery and modular replacement - you have to have the supply chain to support it. JLR aren’t alone in this, but they do have a reputation for it. My hoe is they fix our issue and that this brilliant car in concept gets backed up by a service culture that can adapt and live up to it. Big challenge. We will see. BTW we really didn’t like the LC300 and it’s already having issues with massive oil consumption (a hot V). I’ve driven BMWs for years and they have issues but geez, you wouldn’t know it because they put a premium on solving them. My wife got asked by our dealer why I hadn’t replaced my least one and she told him Id bought the Landie. He asked why on earth we did that - but then had to admit BMW simply don’t produce a 4x 4/ tow vehicle. So our choices are limited , all have their compromises and maybe I’ve made a massive mistake. I hope not because we love the car 95% of the time. Hopefully the 5% doesn’t occur in a dicey spot ! 😉😂. But I certainly get your view, because some of my 4WD friends (we weren’t 4wd people before this) suggested we not go this way for similar reasons. We just didn’t like the other options.

@@toomuchjam I like the general look of it, but don’t know enough about all the weights and towing capacity etc and how the service back up will work. But a good performing extra option in the market is potentially a good thing. The Defender is a great car so Ineos have some work to outperform it AND back it up. As you say - a completely new car means we have to see why if any issues they have. Im not for or against it, just wary that beyond the hype it’s taken much longer to produce than they suggested, it can’t be immune from the microprocessor shortage noting that is slowly receding, and of course the third party service back up of a new model and brand will be interesting to watch. It simply wasn’t an option for our lap as it wasn’t on the market so we now have a bit of time to see how it goes. We haven’t given up on the Landie yet though. ( Call us crazy?)

Hi. Thanks for watching and an interesting comment. I have never noticed if TSA is doing anything - certainly not noticeably. But our whole rig is pretty stable. We have had ESC engage a couple of times in big cross winds, but we’ve never experienced the van swaying from side to side - just a sudden shunt . I’m not sure that the car braking in a sway situation would be very good so it would have to be very subtle - as the general advice is not to brake but to decelerate and try not to steer your way out. So for me i’d rather the trailer was braking than the car in that situation - but as I say the Zone is very well planted. For us ESC was important and some insurers give discounts for ESC. So in fairness i couldn’t give an informed comment on the TSA noting many modern cars have some form of it. Glad LR fixed your issues - that’s the way it should be. I should add that the LR docs say the TSA doesn’t work in slippery conditions so not sure how it would go on loose gravel for example.

Great video, honest and straight forward. We have the P400 and only a small software issue. However the JLR "experience" is horrendous. They do exactly what you described. Their response for a software issue from the factory was to speak with the dealer. How can they help? We are hoping a OTA will fix it soon. We getting our JB sting in a few months, weight has been weighting on my mind lately (pun intended). We made decision to move recovery gear into the van and my camping gear (battery, solar, fridge) are all left at home when the family goes. Quick question did you say in your video 300kg ball weight?
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the comment. Yes the issue is whether JLR can change more than the brand and actually address a service culture. As I said after a bit off head butting the dealership relationship was good. I know they were astounded when the issue occurred, which was beyond them to find a part in the global network, seeing the email telling me to go back to the dealer. When we escalated it was with the dealership agreement be user they couldn’t get the part themselves. On the tow ball weight - our actual TBW was 280kg. The rated maximum is 350kg. But of course that eats into the rear axle capacity as well. So when I referred to 300kg it was the figure at which point you have to make some significant sacrifices in payload in the car especially if it’s the 5 seater. So the Cruisemaster weigh in had a TBM of 330kg with 2 adults and a full tank of fuel the rest of the car totally empty. So the 300kg figure isn’t a compliance plate type figure it’s the figure which represents a pint that you might have an issue and have to make some tough choices or in practical terms might not work in the 5 seater. I hope that makes sense? I should have said in the video but at the end of the day nothing really counts but a proper weigh in of your combination fully loaded but it’s far better that people have an idea of where the lines are before they by the rig not after it. Hope that helps and doesn’t confuse things?
@HughSmith
@HughSmith Жыл бұрын
@@nextleveloz The reason i ask is that my JB Sting dual axle is estimated to be 180-200kg ball weight. I thought the Zone would be much lighter. Then again we are not doing the lap just yet as my wee one is only 4. On the rebrand I think is a good thing. I don't own a Land Rover I own a Defender, my wife have a Valar not a Land Rover Range Rover Valar. I hope by doing this they will be more focused on the Defender than making STUIPD Jaguar SUV's. Good luck with the trip stay safe and we are excited to see more videos.

@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
@@HughSmith The newer lineup of Zone vans is trying to get TBW a bit lighter but there is a limit to how low you can go for a 2.6 t tare / 3.5 t max van to ensure it’s still stable. But the point on the video was a rough trigger for when you might exceed the Defender axle capacity. That test was done with the former Zone Off road. If you are buying a new Zone, have a look at their configurator and talk to the team there about what likely TBW would be for a new van. Hope that helps. My videos will only ever give some considerations and our experience, and our best advice ultimately is understand the likely conservative parameters of your rig with eyes open and then ultimately weigh the whole thing live and fully loaded. But I do think Zone are trying to get some lighter TBW for their vans.

No worries and thanks for watching. I don't suggest my situation is typical of all Defenders anymore than the broken down Land Cruisers we've past or seen on tilt beds mean all Land Cruisers break down. Its hard to keep perspective because we never see the incidence of break down by brand or fulsome accounts of people who don't get their parts - and there is plenty of anecdotal comments in various forums about Toyotas lack of support for warranty for example and for certain parts shortages. So yes, I know of several of those sorts of issues as well. Your point about reputation is understandable - but its been fascinating to me - assomebody who isn't brand tribal for LR or for Toyota (not for or against) - how quick people were to say - there you go you broke down - so all Land Rovers always break down. It reinforced a prejudice in the market. We are sticking with the car for the moment (and see our review of this recovery and repair coming out tomorrow ), because as disappointed as we were in the breakdown, we like the car itself and wonder is it the car, is our car or is it - as you say - Land Rover. But you might be surprised. Despite some big fails in the recovery and repair - overall they turned around the car very quickly and it could have been even quicker.

Thanks for watching. And the comment. And yes this perception is certainly out there. Are you so sure it’s been since day dot ? Just asking because the early series 1 and 2 were evident doing all sorts of hard stuff in all sorts of rough places. I drove them for years in the Army - noting they had their own support system in place. Never owned one before now , but the brand I drove mostly doesn’t produce a tow / touring option. But yes some of the service culture issues are evident - and I’ve covered that. and it’s also true that when we bought, some friends urged us not to. and have made some comment since. But when we bought LC300 wasn’t out and would be a year later than predicted and many people had their deposits returned because Toyota over promised and under delivered. The LC200 was no longer being sold new and the second hand market was crazy - so while the model could be reliable with high KMs on the odo, the asking prices were ridiculous for vehicles with sometimes dubious history. The ranger couldn’t tow our van (it was very close to the wind on weights etc). The trucks didn’t fit in our garage in inner city Brisbane and the car had to be my town car as well as our touring car. And JLR were putting a lot of stock in this car to improve their market share. In every head to head the Defender was coming out on top - but then there was alway that nagging issue of corporate culture and “reliabiity”. So yes - when you see the episodes of our car on a tilt bed you might be entitled to say it reinforces the perception - true story. But rest assured we did the research and maybe further time will prove if we are wrong or right. But for the record we have seen Fords, Toyotas and Y62s on tilt beds. And Oncan only wish there was a reliable and transparent model of repair and recovery incidence reporting - but no make will do that . So I will concede it’s hard for me to put hand in heart that we got it right - when we’ve had these issues but how certain are you that the emerging models don’t have their own issues? I really don’t know. By the way - I’m not car brand tribal so don’t need to speak for or against any of them. I’m not convinced the consumer laws are being upheld for most brands TBH? but that’s another topic.

I would halve the oil change intervals that Land Rover recommend as an absolute minimum. The service intervals are far too long for the small sump capacity of the D300's engine. If it had a sump with 12 litres of oil, I'd say that the service interval is OK, but as it is only 8.8 litres, I'd feel more comfortable changing the oil more often. As often as every 7,500 kms, mainly to avoid timing chain wear and tear. Oil is cheap compared to an engine overhaul and Land Rover's timing chains are known to stretch beyond the tensioner's range, and this has been likely due to oil no longer providing adequate lubrication.

As a once loyal LR/RR customer I’m afraid to say that they will never change. Terrible company to deal with when something goes wrong, even within the warranty period as you have found out. I’ve had eight of their vehicles in all and if they behaved and backed up their vehicles it could well have been 24 vehicles. It got to the point where I had zero loyalty left, because they have zero loyalty to me or any other customer. I once had a new Range Rover and it had an issue with rear brakes locking up. The dealer tried various cures but failed and had me meet the company’s area service manager who, to the dealer and my horror plainly said that they had spent too much on warranty on the six month old car and they would not spend more on getting it to brake safely. Yes really! Thankfully the owner of the dealership was as horrified and disappointed as I was and he did have it in again and wangled the repair by claiming warranty of another similar vehicle. While I was very pleased with the dealer, the bitter taste left by the company has never left me and all loyalty was lost forever. In the meantime I’ve had three Nissans, two Land Cruisers, a Mitsubishi, Mercedes ML, BMW X5 and Audi Q7 plus many others in my six car fleet. It’s always the LR vehicles that have given trouble and issues with the brand managers. The only other issue was with two dishonest Audi dealers which seemed to have been trained in the same customer scamming techniques.

Thanks for watching band the comment. Wow. That’s not good. One of the things consumers miss in Australia is that the warranty is one thing, but manufacturers have to meet a higher bar in the Australian Consumer Law. So the suggestion they have spent too much on the warranty is irrelevant, so long as the issue is not addressed, rendering a vehicle not fit for purpose. Currently I’m off the road again (a future episode) but happy to day the service centre / dealer in WA that I’m dealing with has been great.

Amazing review and insight. As Japanese, I’ve been loving my land cruiser but now waiting for 300d to come soon. Slightly minor questions but may I please ask few questions as we are new to Australia and doesn’t not have much information, can you suggest: - good battery charger. (We don’t use E commerce so preferably the one I can buy locally) - neoprene seat cover. - advise for when the car is not in use for long time. I return to Japan for 1-2 months and leave the car in garage. With Land Cruiser, I’ve left at the dealer but JLR would not allow. Hope to hear from you..

Hi My smart car charger is a model sold by RACQ (The Queensland auto club and roadside assist service) . I’m not sure what State you are in but the equivalent service (NRMA, RAC, RACV etc) might assist. But if you go to a Battery World store and ask them for a quality smart charger for your battery type they should help also. Our seat covers were purchased through e commerce at My Custom Car mycustomcar.com.au/free-swatch/. I can’t help with car storage I’m afraid, there are various car and van storage facilities around Australia. We store our van we we are at home, and they can often arrange to periodically put you vehicle on a charger. But they are in demand and it is often hard to get a space. Again if you are leaving it at home , ask battery world how long the charger can stay on it. I’m not a technical expert on car electrics so it’s best to ask a professional auto electrician or battery world or similar for advice on maintaining your battery. Thanks for reaching out, we enjoy sharing when we can. Oh and welcome to Oz!

You don't need a winch for Cape York (unless you deliberately seek extreme routes) so you could have saved a bunch of weight by not fitting one.
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Fair point. We are going to many more places than Cape York - noting we did do part of the OTT and the Defender did some places better than others that did need a winch. The weight of the winch is about 30kg. We don’t have an overall payload issue, we do have to manage the weight on the rear axle - so the winch doesn’t affect that negatively (if anything it pulls the centre of gravity forward a bit and helps marginally reduce weight on the rear axle. But yes it is an on balance issue and for the few times you might need a winch (PDR defs doesn’t need it) and if you are on the edge of your weight limits the winch could go. 👍 There are only two times we needed recovery gear out and both times it was to help others. On one case on the Bloomfield track somebody was towing a van which came off the edge of one of the steel grades and they couldn’t get back on. In that case we did need a winch but we couldn’t get around them so a car coming from above had a winch and we used that plus my reps very gear. The only other time was somebody who got stuck in slippery mud and didn’t have recovery boards so we helped out with ours. So the winch hasn’t been needed for us yet and likely won’t.

A very considered, objective, unbiased and well presented owners report of the NEW Defender capability and issues you have personally experienced. JLR customer support department sounds exceptionally poor which is a real pity given the effort and time that JLR as a company have put into making the Defender which as you very well articulate such a potentially great vehicle into such a potential disaster. These guys at JLR “or are they just some random assortment of PlayStation/X-box kids” really ought to get their finger out of whatever orifice they have them in and sort customer support issues like this pronto otherwise this vehicle is “Dead In The Water” despite all their efforts. JLR they sound like a right bunch of cowboys 🤠 . This puts me off buying any of the JLR jvehicles despite loving the Defender I think a Grenadier may be a better, more reliable and more robust option even though this is their first effort at building a good 4x4.

Thanks for watching and for the feedback and comment. It’s very much appreciated. It’s regrettable that this culture is embedded and as you’d have seen, at least on the module replacement the dealer was better to deal with. I do think the Defender is a great car or we wouldn’t have stuck with it and let’s hope they can resolve this issue. I will keep the channel posted. The Ineos is interesting. At its inception it was to try to keep the old Defender concept alive and we often forget people had stopped buying them and they weren’t up to the standards modern cars require. So in a funny way Ineos was appealing to people who didn’t like the new Defender. For us it wasn’t an option of course and it’s taken a longer time to get to market, so we will all be watching to see how it goes on the ground. TBH while I think the heart is in the right place at least, I do wonder how they will go with their back up and servicing model. I have not been able to find the specs that affect towing etc (e.g axle capacity vs kerb weight) and so keen to hear of peoples experiences as it rolls out. The jury is out on that. But having more good choices on that segment has to be a good thing. Can’t stress enough, I’m not a car brand tribalist. If somebody makes a good car and can back it up and it does the job it was designed for well - within reason the Badge is less relevant isn’t it?

Hi Mate thanks for the comment, it’s very much appreciated. Yep the Defender is pricey. Most expensive car we’ve ever bought by a good margin. Yes it’s a good truck and hopefully JLR ensure it meets its full potential - but this whole tow car and van caper is eye watering expensive for many people so they have to make compromises. The only thing you should never compromise is safety. So juggle the value of cars, upgrade suspension etc, manage expectations of the van choices etc. I’m not a car expert and have learned more about weights and towing etc in the past 2 years than I ever thought was possible. So I can’t comment on the DMax, but I do see a number on the road. Good luck with car purchase and safe travels!

Hi David, I've really enjoyed your channel and it's content. I'm a D300 owner and will be ordering a Zone RV soon. I have a query about the tow ball tongue you ended up using. I can gather from the Zone website that the standard Defender Tongue I currently have installed, while it suited my previous van, will be too low to tow the Zone at the correct height. Could you tell me what tongue you utilised? Chhers.
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Ай бұрын
Hi Peter. Thanks for watching and the feedback. We really appreciate it. Yes the standard JLR hitch (tongue) is too low. We use a Hayman Reece part number either 202126/ 21161 (3500kg/350kg rated 195mm hitch). We use it upside down which it’s fine to do with that model I’m not sure if that part number still exists but HR will likely have an updated equivalent. Ours is the best compromise we could find to balance both the LR recommended specs and the towing height needs for the Zone Base and we are a tiny touch nose down which is fine and right on the minimum recommended tow height of 490mm. Im assuming you are getting a Pergrine or Sojourn?? I’m not 💯 sure but I think the tow heights for the Gen 2 vans differ a touch from the Base. So check with Zone or do a search on the zone owners site on “tow height” as this gets canvassed regularly and lots of good info. If you are getting the expedition the tow height is a bit different again. My best recommendation always is - confirm with Zone the tow height for your model van. Take that info and the JLR recommended tow hitch length (175mm from the Defender iGuide) and go to a HR dealer and they can measure your hitch receiver (make sure you’ve started the car and are in travel height ) and they can find the best hitch / tongue for you. You likely won’t find one exactly meeting every recommendation but from experience it’s better to be ever so slightly longer than shorter on the hitch length to reduce the risk of the trailer brake hitting the tyre when hitching and unhitching. That incurs a tiny but not excessive weight penalties on the rear axle so don’t go too long (our is 190 or 195mm). In our case we had a hitch that was too short and solid so a touch heavy so we took the whole rig into Arrow Towbars at Brendale on Brisbane’s north and they trialed and errored until they found the best match which was also slightly lighter as well. But if it helps and the tow heights of the new vans are in the 490-530mm range our hitch is the 202126/ 21161. Final comment check on the Defender forum and use a search term like “towing zone” because there is lots of discussion without having to post a new question and there are several Defender and Zone owners who have shared their setups and experiences also. All the best with the new rig and safe travels. cheers David and Paula

@@nextleveloz Thanks David, very informative. That has definitely been the problem, finding a hitch length that is at the recommended JLR length of 175mm and to be able to achieve the tow heights of the 490-530 that you have correctly surmised of a Pergrine, which is the model we are ordering. I’ll check in with a HR dealer as you suggest. Thanks again and much appreciated. Cheers, Peter.

Thanks for following and your comment. It’s much appreciated. I can’t add anything more to my comments on the backup / culture and they have a reputation. I for one hope the rebrand is more than just a badge change. I can only point out that we’ve kept the car and persisting but … you e seen the vid and some of my friends do raise one eyebrow as a sympathetic “told you so”. If you look at the comments a number of people have had no issues with their Defenders. Some are long suffering loyalists “. And a few have had different issues. I also expected some bugs overall they would have to iron out by updates etc. Other alternatives aren’t immune from issues I might add. So you could jump onto the ridiculously endless queue for a LC300 and risk significant oil consumption and while Toyota certainly have a much bugger service network, watch 4x overland and see Andrew’s gripe with Toyotas approach to warranty on a corroded low range control rod on a 12 month old 79 series. The big trucks RAMs and Chevs aren’t without some reported supply chain issues and remember they are converted from LHD to RHD and is Australia a priority market? So my aim isn’t to persuade people to not by a Defender (or any other brand). It was a review, based on a lot of requests and to provide a warts and all perspective from a non tribally aligned person. And we’ve kept the car so far - so that tells you we personally want to work to get it fixed because we do like it. My best advice is but the car that suits your needs best and in that balance weigh up the service back up. My final thought on this is to remind that I get the road side assist / recovery and exchange part model. It’s what high tech equipment does now. If you have a a better car with better service backup to go to, maybe that’s a consideration. But at least you and others buying now have a better overview of what issues might arise and at what frequency. I’m now aware of one other with the 2WD issue. apparently theirs has been resolved which is encouraging. Hope that helps. I haven’t payed to seek to advocate or lever a campaign against or to JLR currently - but thank you for the kind offer. Let’s see how we go. We got there on the driver assist module and they know we are managing the recurrent issue so I hope I can report some good news at some stage.

Hi thanks for the comment and question. I really don’t know as i don’t know much about the Engel because in our case it was too heavy and didn’t come into contention, never mind a slider. Just keep in mind that the way the door sits centrally the fridge and slider - if they fit will be more to the centre than to the left so the slider can clear the panels. Our fridge ate to the left but doesn’t need to slide - so it sits about 15cm off the left hand panels as we put a couple of light stools down that side to help stop them moving around. With our fridge we also have to have 2nd row bench seats moved slightly forward to fit the fridge in. Best think might me to get all your measurements for your proposed slide and fridge and head down to your dealer and check them out in a demo car if they have one. But ask on the New Defender Australia facebook group of anybody has your likely fridge and slider combo installed. It’s a pretty good group.

Hi thanks for the suggestion. Regrettably it also happens when not towing. First time was within a week of taking delivery on city roads. Mind you - in. 4wd car the last thing you want if you get traction reduction is to fall into 2wd, so it would be an odd response. I asked what i thought was a simple question - what were the design parameters that would necessitate going into 2wd ( ie what failure did the designers anticipate that the car would need to go into 2wd ). I thought that might help - crickets. It happens when in comfort mode in particular ( and by extension auto terrain mode) which means we can’t use auto if we are anywhere near something trickier ( like gravel, sand etc) but that means manual terrain selection even when conditions might not normally need it - e.g firm sand at Teewah beach where auto night normally detect traction is ok ( comfort) but if ur gets softer goes to sand only when required. We can’t afford to lose traction in sand and risk 2wd mode ( as happened when the tide was coming in at Teewah and Fraser Iskand) so we have to manually select the mode and hope it never drops into 2WD. We had the issue towing at Teewah and not towing at Fraser before the lap. That’s when they tried to fix it by a software change to two modules and caused the driver assist to fail - hence the first big delay. Hope that helps describe it and these days we just over rely on manual terrain select but still relatively regularly have the issue when we are on relatively good roads ( sealed and unsealed) and in comfort mode. So we hope they keep working to identify a fix. I now think I know what might be needed - but we need LR to keep working the issue through even if - touch wood - we have to manage until we get home and have no major issue in the meantime.

Hi thanks for watching and we appreciate the comment. In our case they didn’t have a vehicle available specced for the touring / towing job. So for a number days they loaned a Disco Sport and on a few days they loaned a Defender with a lower rating than ours, but only on days when the car was specifically in their workshop. The rest of the time it was just driveable (but without sensors and cameras and not fit for purpose). So it mostly sat in our carport on a charger with a few runs up and down the highway to keep the battery charged. So regrettably there was no way we could get on the road as they didn’t readily have a suitably equipped tow vehicle and even then great uncertainty as to the arrangements. They couldn’t provide a part availability date - not sure how you could get a date when their supply system can’t issue a known date. The issue at that time was there were limited parts in the system - but 100% were going to production not repair. So as I outlined it was hard at that time for them justify they were meeting the ACL obligations. I’m not sure though why I would indemnify them from issues arising out of damaging a part - it’s important that they are responsible for any incidental damage. Not that they were seeking to avoid that at the time. It was a very frustrating period. As I said, after an unsatisfactory period and some friction we got an outcome. But regrettably you can’t get a like for like replacement readily and in our case it had to be equipped for touring and to tow our van - so a 7 seater with the requisite rear axle capacity and tow fitted, brake controllers etc. They didn’t have a courtesy car that could do that only courtesy cars suitable for running around town.

yep I agree on its general towing capability. I never said it couldn’t tow. 😎👍. In fact it tows our Zone Base very well and as I said the whole rig is very stable. But for one significant issue we love the car and it’s one reason why we’ve persisted and stuck with it. Not sure where you are Grant but we are in the middle of a Lap around Australia so we are testing the rig on some of our toughest roads and conditions. I suppose that’s why we have that nagging concern that in the middle of a river crossing in the Kimberley, heading up Cape York or on some soft beach with a big tide coming in that it might drop into 2WD at an awkward moment. 😉😬. it it’s great you’ve had zero issues, I can’t stress enough that should be the aim. But cars do break and the critical issue in my review was whether JLRs backup and service ethos is up to par when that happens. It’s seem a few people have had different issue and many have reinforced my concern. But we hope to get it fixed, we’d like it to get fixed and if that happens and we successfully and safely complete the lap as well, we get to prove the detractors wrong. Thanks so much for the comment . Safe towing. A Defender pulling an airstream would be a great picture - do you have a drone?

I have been researching both the Defender and D5 as a new tow vehicle for our 3.5t van but have ruled them both out unfortunately. I really wanted to give them a tick as they are very capable 4wds with good tech. My 2 reasons are reliability and low rear axle limit. I am struggling to see how I could remain legal towing our van. Made worse when I hear of owners saying the kerb weights provided by JLR are wrong and the stock car weighs more. Makes payload calcs even worse with that rear axle limit.

So sorry to hear about your unfortunate responses from JLR, not supporting you and not doing the right thing by their customers. I have never owned a Land Rover but really preferred the Defender over others we have looked at like LC300 (although in some ways not). I have been agonizing about buying a Defender. The constant stream of infamously bad reliability issues and even worse, throw you under the bus culture when it eventually fails, is a double jeopardy. Still, the product seems to sell itself and so it creates this classic 'approach - avoidance conflict'. The closer the attraction pulls you in, you get equally and oppositely repelled. Most of us have heard the stories from the saga of the TFL boys and the issues reported by Cruisemaster with his Defender, (and many more). As hopefully you will, they got their problems mostly sorted...eventually, but one wonders what happens to those that dont have highly visible KZfaq channels and/or can't afford or don't have the energy or time or knowledge or money to deal with it.....the ones that just expect to be treated fairly, or at the very least have their consumer law rights vaguely entertained. I was secretly hoping that by now, May 2023, all the teething problems for Defender would have been ironed out and that JLR would be keen to 'turn over a new leaf' on what has been a scandalous history of which your story has been exemplar. As you point out it is emblematic of a deeper cultural problem. One rationalizes that surely looking after customers is good for business but I guess the facts are as long as they keep on selling 'em as fast as they can make 'em, they are laughing all the way to the bank. In other words the culture won't change until they see sales and profits falling. Cynical but sadly realistic it would seem. Like you I want to like Defenders but admit that your story has produced a bit of a heart sink moment.....and serious pause for thought. I acknowledge that you are not 'tribal' and thank you for your very believable account of affairs. As a side note, it is interesting that I have been actively researching the AWD system for the Defender. It is very hard to get reliable info (conflicting opinions depending who you ask) but it appears the Diesel defender is/ may be treated a little differently with respect to AWD and possibly more prioritizing RWD??. If true, I was thus thinking of getting a petrol version (but now seriously in doubt about JLR altogether). It seems both petrol and diesel get similar drivetrains with a multi clutch mechanism in the transfer case that can vector torque to front or rear wheels "as needed", up to 50% to front (50%:50%) and 100% to rear (0% front:100% rear) controlled by a "TCCM" control module, but biasing full RWD whenever it can to marginally boost efficiency (and reduce emissions?). The diesel version may get an additional / or different front axle drive disconnect module that the petrol does not. How this relates to your particular problem I do not know but it is interesting to speculate. The front axle disconnect module has a driveline disconnect control module which allows parts of the front driveline to not just disconnect but stop rotating - I think only in the diesel versions. It may be a good thing or bad thing? bad thing if it goes wrong I guess My interest was in relation to towing and wanting an all wheel drive system that was truly permanent AWD (not dropping into 100% RWD....and certainly not staying there).I cant say for sure that the petrol version is superior in this regard but if less biased to RWD in some way it might compensate for otherwise torque and other diesel advantages for towing. So it was ironic to hear of your unexpected dropping into and getting stuck in RWD episodes. Apologies for the lengthy post and keep up the good work. David

Yes mine is a fault. JLR accept its fault and they fried a driver assist module trying to modify it. It would be curious on sealed road for a car to go from AWD to 2 wd and issue a cautionary warning about possible loss of traction and indicating continued driving with caution. It has also gone to 2 wd from 4 wd, whilst on firm sand (eg Teewah and Fraser Island coastal beach road, when it momentarily hit some modestly softer sand. So you would expect the opposite of 2 wd was default and it was terrine selecting. So JLR accept mine is a fault and this more recent discussion about diesels defaulting to 2 wd is curious, by comparison with the petrol. I’ve speculated in another discussion that it’s curious the torquier more economical engines (diesel having a higher energy density than petrol) have this applied to them. It had me wondering given some reports of differential shudder and other things whether they are managing toque. They have also modestly reduced the tow capacity of the 7 seater diesel. I’m not a car tech head though - so curious like everybody else.

There has been two updates since this one, so check them out. On the upside we are now 7,000km since the turbo charger issues, which are the subject of the second two related reviews, and so far so good. The repair and recovery turnaround for those issues was good and bit for some slip ups could have been even faster - so i while it wasn’t good having those issues the repair and the service at Whyatts was first rate. There were some things that worked really well and a couple not so well in that case. But check them out and note that at the moment we are sticking with the Defender but let’s see how it goes for the rest of our Lap. I also had an excellent talk with the manager of the CRC on the roadside assist support. But as you can see - some technical video and audio issues aside - i try to be as balanced as possible and as we aren’t a car expert channel we don’t tell people what they should and shouldn’t choose we just share our experience. Thanks for watching and good luck with your considerations.

@@MrShivermetimbers123 Yes this issue of the actual towing capacity vs the specified capacity in Australia compared to the US is well canvassed in the Defender forums. It was pretty clear the towing capacity of the 130 was going to be lower, not the least because the hitch distance from the axle was considerably longer than the 110 due to the rear overhang. The GVM of the 110 7 seater diesel is 3280kg according to their manual (the 130 is 3380kg) . The Towing capacity is 3500 for the earlier 8 seaters although the most recent 23.5 MY variant there is a document that says the towing capacity for that model 7 seater diesel is 3495kg (ie 5kg less). The advertised capacity in the US generally says 8200 US pounds. However when you go to the car specs on their manuals there is more detail. So I’m not sure if that applies to the 130. But it doesn’t matter because the car in Australia is specified to meet the particular passenger vehicle class ADRs and they won’t change it. Many have tried re the rear axle capacity of the 5 seater. I also see the 130, while it has a lower towing capacity, it actually has a 170kg higher real axle capacity than the 100 which might be explained by the fact the car is 161 kg kerb weight heavier (and the Australian spec is likely heavier again). While the car is 161 oh heavier than the 110 the GVM only increases by 100kg (so payload is slightly less). And that extra axle rating on the 130 is taken up mostly by the extra weight of the rear of the car and because of the longer hitch length (ie a higher lever ratio) they have dealt with that by reducing the towing rating and the tow ball weight. I have looked at the US stuff closely for various reasons, but it’s worth noting that while the GVM in the US is higher, the GCM isn’t correspondingly higher so with a higher vehicle weight you still wouldn’t be able to tow 3500kg and stay within the GCM or gross train weight as they call it. So I sympathize on the capricious variations of specified capacities between jurisdictions but in relation to the 130 the long overhang and the heavier car kerb weight means without extra GCM means you’d only get a marginal benefit by the time you balances all the towing considerations (TBW, axle capacity, vehicle weight GVM and GCM). If you need to tow 3500 kg you really need the 110.

@@nextleveloz awesome thanks for that detailed explanation. Makes a lot of sense, land rover are extremely frustrating at times. I’ve been recommended to get the 110 7 seater as it has a slightly higher GVM?.. but would I have less payload as a result?… I’ve been told you can get the 110 7 seater then have the seats taken out to get an extra 80kg payload. Not sure what you think of that? Thanks again
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 10 ай бұрын
@@MrShivermetimbers123 Hi. I’m always careful about this because it’s a matter of choice and depends on your rig (van weight, tow ball weight, how many people and your likely gear/ payload needs). While the dealer is correct on the towing capacity of the 130, my experience is they are hopeless at the van towing and weights stuff. I don’t think the GVM of the 110 is higher but the car is according to the specs 161 oh lighter (be aware options add to the car kerb weight). But to tow near 3500kg it’s clear the 130 can’t do it and the 110 technically can subject to axle weight and keeping within the the GCM. In general the issue though have to manage is the tow ball down weight and axle rating and then GVM. You can remove the third row seat (so it sounds like you don’t need the third row for passengers) but depending on your state regulations if that’s permanent you might have to get it engineer certified and that might in fact turn it in to a 5 seater with a compliance reduction in axle rating. In some states you can remove the third row seats without rhat (my understanding is Vic is in that category) and in some like qld you can temporarily remove it as i’ve done, but you will only get an approximate increase in payload of less than 50kg as the seats weigh just under that and you will have to put a temporary / false floor back in . But to deal with the more fundamental decision of what to buy, my suggestion is get the downloadable iguide www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/document/3E/2024/1697590/proc/G2901006/G3409944 It lists the weights, GVM , GCM and towing weights of all the variants. At least you will then know what the car you’d like to order can do on paper (note that the australian kerb weights are slightly higher and options like tow packs, tow bars, expedition racks all add weight and reduce payload. I’d also suggest you join the Land Rover New Defender Owners Group founded in Australia (on facebook) and you can search things like “towing” “weights” etc and see the information threads on that site. There is a good mix of experience on that site. So keep in mind with two people, some basic gear, roof bars and a lightweight awning I’m towing a 3.5 ATM van (we run at around 3.2t and around 300kg ball weight. We removed our third row seats temporarily. We are well under GCM and under GVM but not by a huge amount. So it’s doable with the 7 seater noting I know nothing about your setup. Some people tow 3 tonne ish or a bit more with their 5 seaters and have managed it . and of course once you have it all based on the best and conservative estimates then you should get it weighted fully loaded so you can vary loads if you need to. But at least get a good understanding of what vehicle you might want and what it’s weights are with the iguide - that has the most recent info - and perhaps also join the forum above. hope that helps.

(is that the same as the above? Bit confused on this one!) Caravan Tow Ball Download - 350KG Defender GVM (110 5 Seater) - 3200 Braked Tow Limit - 750KG Car Kerb Weight (110 5 seater) - 2406KG Loaded car weight (2 people, dog, fuel and a bit extra) - 2700KG Car GCM (couldn't find 5 seater figure) - 6780 That gives me under GCM by 580KG, under GVM by 500G@@nextleveloz. I still think this is a good car/ concept. Yes they have that reputation. As I'm not a repeat LR owner I can say it is frustrating when JLR act to form, but them the response and service we got from the service centre on these breakdowns and repairs was as good as I've ever had from any brand dealer. And while I'm critical of cultural laziness that undermines good service as people will see on. an upcoming review of the second breakdown (which was related), LR recovered the car and van 750km and effected a major repair and had us back on the road in a bit over two weeks - and but for some sloppiness in the parts system it would/ could have been half that. So there is nothing good about a break down, but that's a pretty amazing turn around for any brand. So LR are capable of a very good service and if they do that regularly and these things are early production and design bugs (or one offs) they adapt from quickly, they end up with a great car and make inroads into this rotational issue. Wishful thinking? maybe, but they have shown its possible.

The keep trying to fix 8 or 9 times taking it back etc. that is so frustrating for the consumer and no fault of their own. But no compensation for time wasted and lost and until recently the wouldn’t swap the car over. Now the legally have to with any car defined under the law as a lemon. Also I’m a mechanical engineer and have been right over all the last versions of Land Rover except the defender and disco 5. Great to see the common issues persist. A resolution to all lane rover products is this. Separating the sensor fault codes from disabling the vehicle into limp mode. For example in your instance it’s not damage causing to the engine. Yet it went into limp mode and disabled performance of the engine. That car should have been driving fine. And could have logged to visit a service centre rather than disabling the whole car. Catastrophic event such as over heating engine or oil or fuel leak sure. Every time a limp mode takes place it’s always a simple reason. Even in the older land rovers a faulty injector will limp mode. Hope everything goes well from here for you. Peace

We’ve temporarily removed the third row. Just keep in mind the rules around modifications vary state to state in terms of what you can change before it affects compliance. So I understand in some states you can remove the third row permanently without engineer certification and therefore no affect on your compliance ratings. But in some states if you remove them permanently you might need an engineer to certify it in which case it becomes a 5 seater and the compliance plate would need to be amended accordingly (and a 5 seater defender has a rear axle rating of 1800kg not 1900kg). So yes. removing them to save weight is a consideration. But make sure you understand the rules on things like seat removal and if that affects your vehicle compliance in your state.
