Small guns are typically at their best when they're chambered for small calibers. So it was kind of a no-brainer for Ruger to finally make a .22LR version of their wildly popular LCP. Today, I'm looking into why this is such a great idea and whether Ruger's execution of that idea is equally great.
At 4:18 I said the name of the wrong holster. The one I'm holding is a DeSantis Slim-Tuck. There is a holster called the King Tuck, but it's made by Galco.

I purchased the Ruger lcp II 22lr, took it to the range, ran 80 rounds of CCI Velocitors, Stingers, and Mini Mag,through it, only 20 rounds actually fired, all the rest were light strikes,when I say light I mean you could barely see the strike. I contacted Ruger the next day ,talked to the sweetest lady named, Cynthia, who said she would Email me a return RMA which I received while I was still talking to her, I sent the gun back that day. Ruger sent me an Email when they received it,another one when they sent it back, all within a week,with a letter saying they replaced the barrel and a complete slide. Took it to the range as soon as I received it, fired 200 rounds of the above ammo with absolute ly no problems. absolutely the best service I have ever received from any firearm company.

I have been carrying this pistol for 2 years now. I chose it over the 380 because the ammo was harder to find and I didn't like the recoil from the 380. Lots of people talk shit about the 22 but I have yet to meet someone who would volunteer to be shot by one trying to prove 22 is too weak. Perfect pocket pistol. Light. Compact. Terrific pistol.

To date, I've put well over 2,000 rounds through my LCP 22LR using *only* Remington Golden Bullet hollow point-- I've NEVER had a light strike. The only issues I've had were 2-3 stovepipes & 5-6 failures to extract a fired round. I've also had a few rounds that didn't go completely into battery which were easily remedied with a tap on the back of the slide. For me it's been an extremely reliable firearm, to the point that I literally carry it while I'm out jogging & don't have much conceal-carry space. Would I trust my life to it working? Actually, yes. Any malfunctions I've experienced are easy to identify & clear within 1-2 seconds. And respectfully, that can happen to any 9mm or 45ACP. For the record my brand new Glock43X had THREE stovepipes within the first hundred rounds fired. It's been flawless every since, but still... Needless to say, my LCP 22LR has been extremely reliable & I carry it often.

I appreciate Chris’ even handed assessment of .22lr. I hate it when people dismiss it as not being a serious caliber…he pretty much laid it all out there. Also, I usually carry a 380 for my EDC and am looking for a pocket pistol to toss in my gym shorts when I run into the store for a second or am pumping gas. I think this would do the trick..22lr is still going to break ribs, puncture lungs etc.

I wish an ammo manufacturer would make a center-fire .25 magnum cartridge. All they'd really have to do is lengthen the .25 ACP case. You could get close to .380 muzzle energy, but with capacity and recoil that's close to .22 magnum. That would be my ideal pocket gun.

Nothing wrong with carrying a .22 for self defense. The gun has "shoot-ability" in the same way a Bud Light has "drink-ability". It is comfortable to carry. The training will be cheap due to .22 being the cheapest round on the shelf. It is strong enough that a well placed shot will be effective enough.

Best thing about a 22lr for self defense is that in a self defense situation you don't have time to put in hearing protection. A 22 will do less damage to your ear. But because of its lower stopping power you gotta be more accurate.

As for the 22, the only issues I’ve had with mine, in about 200 rounds of ammo, were 3-4 failures to fire, and that was with bulk pack ammo. The Agula Interceptors and CCI velocitors both ran fine. I also added the Hogue grip sleeve, which really helps with grip.

Fun range gun but if I had known about this flaw I probably wouldn't have purchased it. Still my favorite pocket pistol. It’s unmatched in size and capacity. The new mag extensions that tandemkross put out for it turn it into a 14+1. I’m hoping ruger makes a factory 15 round mag. That would literally be perfect. As a backup mag imho. As much as I would like to carry a .32 or .380, practicing with one regularly is hard on the wallet. Oh btw, the beretta bobcat doesn’t have an extractor. It’s not conducive to reliability. I pocket carry my lcp2 daily. It’s by far my FAVORITE gun for light clothing. Just have to point out a comment you made “...When you don’t want to carry a real gun...” The .22lr is a REAL firearm that has been used for self defense for years... My lcp2 has been 100% reliable and has reached well over 10k rounds at the range. The ONLY malfunction I’ve had is a broken firing pin, but that has less to do with reliability than it does service life. I can dump the mag in the blink of an eye. 11 rounds of ANYTHING center mass is going to ruin anybody’s day...

After lots of initial problems with my LCP II similar to the many reported ones by Lucky Gunner and others, I put in an after market stronger recoil spring, polished (with Flitz) the accessible contact areas that involve the friction of moving parts, with special emphasis on the feed ramp, then cleaned out everything with Extreme Duty aerosol gun cleaner, lightly oiled the smaller hidden moving contact points (including the mag follower), and heavily greased all other contact points that cause friction (slide, barrel, etc). By all accounts this tiny gun can be very finicky about the ammo it will, or will not, cycle, each individual having varying mileage with the ammo recommendations of others, so trial and error is the only way, and after trying out at least a dozen types of ammo found that Aguila 40gr solid lead nose (1,130fps) is the most reliable (and, oddly enough, also the cheapest) 22LR round that now runs flawlessly in my gun. No problems at all now by keeping the gun well and truly lubed, every 500 rounds, or so, doing a complete clean out and re-lube. Now looking to try out the Tandemkross extended mag bumpers that allow 4 extra rounds and a full handed grip for increased accuracy.

I bought a Ruger LCP II in 22lr last week, and took it for an extensive test run with over 1000 rounds of ammo over the last few days. I have had exactly two failures, both dud rounds with solid strikes on the casing, reloaded and tried to fire again. I even shot through 100 rounds of Federal 38gr CPHP 1260fps that was packaged in 1999 and has moved four houses. Every single one fired. I really like this gun, its a great shooter. I am currently using it to replace my 380 ACP Ruger LCP II, which I truly hate to shoot due to the recoil. Great video!

Funny you mentioned .32 ACP @ the end. 15 years ago I was looking for a carry gun and decided a Walther PPK in .380 would do it for me. I have crippled hands and am old (ancient now 😭.....😝) now. Man, that 380 ate me alive. I sucked it up, swapped out 3 weeks later for a PPKS in .32. The S has a full metal back strap, not plastic like the PPK & is therefore better balanced and weighs a little more but add .32 small recoil and that solved my problem. I think 380 is just a snappy round & folks with problems like mine just can’t handle it. Another reason to think twice about denigrating a .22 or .22 WMR which is close to .32. Thanks for another terrific video Chris!

I CC the LCP 380. I got the LCP 22 for my mom to CC. Zero firing issues with the LCP 380, but had major rust pitting in 3 areas, which I think is unacceptable. I had it blasted and cerakoted, and all seems well for now (but it hasn't been thru another humid summer, yet). The LCP 22 is a problem child. Had 9 FTF out of 30 rounds, out of the box. I was using some Winchester ammo, not sure of the FPS. I sent it back to Ruger. They sent it back to me, saying "it just needed lubed, nothing is wrong with it". I've never purchased a gun before that I had to lube to make work. I lubed the piss out of it and sent 10 rounds of CCI Quiet thru it (740) FPS. Every single one fired, but none ejected. The consensus seems to be they like fast ammo, so I tried some creme dela creme Aguila 1280 FPS. The first 20 rounds fired fine. The 3rd clip had 1 FTF. 4th clip was fine. So, 39 out of 40 for the Aguila. And lastly I tried some 1280 FPS Winchester. Had 3 FTF and gave up on that. I'll stick with Aguila for now, but will try CCI at a higher FPS, and will try Federal. Ordered the Galloway spring kit today. It irks me to no end that Ruger KNOWS they have a SERIOUS problem with the LCP 22, but CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING TO FIX IT, OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM!!!! I have yet to hear of anyone with the Galloway correction kit that has had a FTF or FTE. Fingers crossed!
@doomsdaydiesel
@doomsdaydiesel Жыл бұрын
I called Ruger. The lady rudely denied there are any known problems with the LCP 22. She refused to acknowledge that my gun has a problem, and requested I send it back in AGAIN. She denies the claims of all of us on the internet stating that we have massive FTF & FTE problems. I bluntly asked her to please report this problem to her superior, and she gave me the strong feeling that she wouldn't. She denounces the Galloway spring kit. And like others have said, she said only 1200+ FPS ammo is adequate for this gun. IDK why Ruger wants to deny the problem they have with their LCP 22, but it has certainly turned me off to their brand. Accept your mistakes. Fix them. Your customers will be happy. Deny they exist, refuse to fix them, and you will lose customers, like they have lost me. @ruger

I have this gun and I think it's great to shoot and works well with high velocity ammo such as CCI Stingers. I have had no failures yet but I did lube it a bit with G96 when I first got it home from the store (after registering it... this is NYS after all). One person that I let try the gun at the range, shot it well but had one failure. I am sure she limp wrist-ed it. The gun is more accurate than I expected and smooth to shoot. I am used to shooting 9mm Glocks and also .38 / .357 S&W revolvers so I am used to recoil. This gun is just a pleasure to shoot. I would not use it to replace my other guns but it will be useful when wearing gym clothes or out on a hot summer day. God bless.

From my experience shooting this gun, due to 22 ammo being a dirtier round then center fire, these LCP 2’s need to be cleaned after a couple hundred rounds being cycled through it to run reliably…..When I shoot mine even with bulk ammo I have no malfunctions until it has run a couple hundred rounds ……After a good clean and lube it is good to go again 👍

I've carried and owned many different pistols. The one that I always seem to come back to is my 922 H&R. It holds nine rounds, is reasonably accurate, it fits in almost any pocket and its reliable as hell. In the winter I tend to carry something bigger but in the summer it's hard to beat a good 22. Most of the guff I take from guys who tout bigger calibers come from guys who aren't carrying a gun while they give me shit. This offering from Ruger appeals to me.

I would love to see you install a spring kit from galloway precision to fix the light primer strike issues and revisit this for a viable concealed carry underwear gun. I had the same problems from mine new out of the box. But the pistol shot and carried so well i really wanted it to work. So i installed that spring kit in mine which made it super reliable and not ammo picky. Only ammo i have found that it didnt like after the kit is cci stingers. But the federal punch has served me well for carry. This is now my go to even tho im not disabled, elderly, or handicapped in any way. I am a burly large towboat engineer. This works for me tho because i can carry it comfortably without having to change my entire wardrobe to hide the gun i carry. It is now uber reliable with non bulk ammo. But mostly as you talked about, i shoot this pistol really well, almost surgical like plinking in my back yard with it over several thousand rounds now and counting. Figure if we could get it out there it might could be an option for other people as well. Thank you for what you do, i always enjoy your content.
