Welcome to the weekly live Q&A with Pastor David Guzik, author of the Enduring Word Bible commentary. After our lead question, Pastor David takes questions via the live chat - simply add your questions & our moderators will arrange & deliver them to Pastor David according to theme or subject!
This week, Pastor David's lead question comes from username Grateful Princess of God, who asks:
"Thank you Pastor David. I have a question. Should today's Christians observe the Sabbath on a Saturday or Sunday? The real Jewish Sabbath is actually on Friday evening through to sunset Saturday, not Sunday. Since the Ten Commandments are still valid today (all summed up by Jesus in the Two) and we obey them, shouldn't Christians also obey the Fourth? It does not seem to make sense to obey every single one except the fourth. I find a lot of conflicting understanding and thoughts..."

This week's questions:
0:00 Greetings and introduction!
1:55 Lead question
17:20 Summary of responses to the 3 questions
19:22 Several of us from my church recently were "Matt. 18" for questioning the Hebrew Roots Movement that was brought in by leadership. They used Titus 3:9-11 to rebuke. Are we sinning by asking questions of leaders?
23:00 My question is regarding your commentary of Mark 3 :7-12 How are the demons bowing down to Jesus, saying “You are the Son of God,” able to render Him harmless, or to control Him and strip Him of power?
27:22 Hi Pastor, I have a question. All OT Sacrifices are done on the altar. But why was Jesus sacrificed on the cross and not on the altar?
30:20 What is your point of view on concept of spiritual father? Do we still need a spiritual father today?
33:25 Hi Pastor, Who or what do you believe appeared to Moses in the burning bush in Exodus 3:2 and why?
37:45 Abraham believed and it was counted as righteousness. was his Faith counted as righteousness or he was literally made righteousness?
40:40 I was just reading the bible and I need an explanation of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. I believe there's a big difference between it being shameful for a woman to speak and a woman having say over their "own bodies", I don't believe in abortion whatsoever unless it means the woman will get very sick, I don't believe that that should be a woman's right but I never knew that it would be shameful for me to speak in church, reading that was a little hurtful and I don't understand.
44:15 In the NT, it says that once we have accepted Jesus as our personal savior, our sins are wiped off. Every time we sin after that, we repent and sins are forgiven and we are made righteous in Jesus. My question is: does God still remember our sins? Thank you!
48:40 I’ve been a little surprised that in many sermons Pastor David often ends his prayers with the phrase “Do it now Jesus”. Surprised that he seems to be telling Jesus what to do. Somehow it seems like it would be better to ask Jesus in a question like “would You please do it now Jesus”. Am I splitting hairs with this? I have actually started saying at the end of my prayers to Jesus to “Do it now” but not sure if it’s appropriate. Would appreciate a reply. Thank you.
51:55 Brother please explain to me the correct way (or the biblical ways) to be baptized in the name of the father, son, and the Holy Spirit - some people are baptized in the name of Jesus only - please explain the difference?
56:27 Hi brother. It is more than tradition to consider the day beginning at sunset and ending at sunset. My brother it is biblical because the week of creation seems to speak to when a day begins and ends. It seems to me this is more than suggested, as you said - does Colossians 2:16-17 override this, OR: is it reasonable to extract/separate Christianity entirely from the traditions/culture it arose within the context of?
59:25 Try the Enduring App today, you're our VIPs!
1:00:55 Can you give me verses explaining how we can quench the Holy Spirit?
1:02:40 What is the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation? I've always been told that forgiving and reconciling are the same thing, and that caused me a lot of pain because the hurt/ pain was fresh. Also, how do we truly forgive without holding resentment ?

“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter THAT REST, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.” Hebrews 4

Thank you for pointing this out. It helped a lot. Hebrews 4:7 it quite helpful 'today ' if you here his voice, don't harden your hearts... Jesus says his kingdom os not of this world, so then jesus is Lord of the sabbath, and entering his rest. He said to the thief on the cross 'today', you will be with me on paradise. Its nice to get a wee routine though, a day of chill

I finally understand what jesus means when he says in the gospel, to the pharisees, that he is Lord of the Sabbath, and still at work. And also when jesus prays for all believers, in John 17, that he prays that we will be all where jesus is. Paradise, as he said to the their on the cross . And also in the gospel of John, "my father's house has many rooms, if that were not so, would I go and prepare a place tor you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. (John 14:1-4). My Sabbath Rest 😊

My family comes from Cape May County, where we still had blue laws for keeping the sanctity of Sunday. By the time I was raising my children, it became confusing as to what could be sold on Sundays. There was a time when you couldn't drive, which evolved from not making your horse work to take you to church on Sunday. It sounds laughable now. Sundays involved a lot of work at home. I chose to think of Saturday as more restful than Sunday. Whatever day seems good to you.

Matthew 5:17- look at the context Matt. 5:17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. Matt. 5:18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Matt. 5:19 “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 5:20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus is speaking to the crowd in response to the Pharisees' accusation that Jesus was trying to abolish the Law of God. Jesus refuted this accusation, saying that His purpose in appearing before men was not to abolish anything. Rather, Jesus came to fulfill the Law.

@@ldebrobander Exactly, we are under the Law of Christ. He fulfilled (completed) all previous mandates. If it is not specifically commanded by the new testament then it has no hold on us. The prohibition on murder in the 10 commandments no longer binds me BUT that same prohibition is repeated in the new testament and thus I should not murder. It is a matter of "by what authority". The 10 commandments were NEVER meant for the whole world, only national Israel. Interestingly, the Noahic covenant did involve the whole world, and those that wish to bring us under the yoke of older covenants ignore it (eating of blood). Because Christ fulfilled ALL previous covenants, I do not allow anyone to use the older testaments to bind my conscience. This will change again in the millennial kingdom. When I speak to my Reformed brothers I often remind them they are not "semper reformanda". They are stuck in an understanding which was a partial reformation. The Reformers got the Gospel right, but they failed to disengage it from the Christendom brought by Constantine. The Reformed correctly point out that no one is saved by keeping the Law of Moses but then they pick and choose from Moses what to enforce. They are as Christ said, putting patches of old leather on a new wineskin resulting in a worse tear.

Neither! Jesus destroyed the Sabbath day, nailing all the Laws to his cross, (Ephesians 2:15/Colossians 2:14) putting an end to the Law, (Romans 10:4) Jesus never gave us a day of rest under the new covenant (Hebrews 4:8). Galatians 3:10-12 The Law is not of faith, Romans 14:23 Whatsoever is not of faith is sin. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ALL things were made new, even the commandments, which Jesus and Paul have given, under the new Covenant. Day beginning at sunset is because of Genesis 1, not custom. However, this is not by command. The ten commandments were commanded to national Israel. We're to follow the law of Christ, not Moses. If not commanded in the newest Testament it is not binding on us. Guzik is essentially correct. Stop calling traditions of men commands of God as the Pharisees did.

It WILL be fulfilled. It has not yet been. He will assume His reigning role on the 7th day, the 7th millennia. He is Lord over all, ruling with a rod of iron throughout that Day and then into eternity. The 10 commandments were written in stone. With God's own finger. This explanation is, unfortunately, bad hermeneutics with a lack of understanding about prophecy. You can't understand the Sabbath fulfillment if you don't understand His appointed times (moedim). Matt 5:19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. I gain much from David Guzik. He is a very knowledgeable brother, but I believe he is often in error when he speaks about prophecy.

Jesus is the One Who accomplishes God's Law by keeping the entire Law perfectly. Jesus never sinned during His earthly life, and so as He went to His death on the cross, He had accomplished or completed all the requirements of God's Law. Jesus was referring to His completing of the Law when on the cross He said, "It is finished."

Pastor Lance replies - Good question. While the reference to "new heaven/earth" suggest heaven, that phrase may be used here to refer to the Millennium and that the Sabbath will be built into that. If Israel takes a place as the globally dominant entity during the Millennium, the Sabbath may indeed by a thing - but as just one more memorial to our covenant with Jesus.

@DavidGuzikEnduringWord
@DavidGuzikEnduringWord 19 күн бұрын
Pastor Lance replies - There is no historical or Biblical basis for a mid-week service. That is simply something churches do on their own. There is nothing sacred about it. Some churches meet Wednesday, others, other nights of the week. The Beard - Many people tell Pastor David he looks like Richard Dreyfuss! Hats - Head coverings have very little "meaning" today, so whether one wears a hat or not is moot. However, some older folk are greatly offended by a man wearing a hat hen he prays. Out of respect for them, it is probably wise to remove it when praying.

I am so sorry Pastor David for the way you believe about the Sabbath. God wrote the Ten Commandments with his own finger. He also said :not one iota or dot will pass away from the law. Why only the fourth commandment was done away with on the cross? The early Christian’s kept the Sabbath up until Constantine time. Jesus himself self rested in the grave on the Sabbath. In my language, the days are still numbers, they never changed but the only two days that has names are the Friday (prep day) and the Sabbath (Shabbat). Revelation 12:17 actually throughout the Bible at least sixty time the keeping of God’s commandments where mentioned and that includes the fourth one. I pray that God will give you the vision of the truth so you can see the word of God for what it really is. The pope admitted himself that the papacy changed the Sabbath to a Sunday because they have authority to change what ever they see fit. Thank you and God bless you Pastor

Is their not something in the old testament where the boy child at 8 days old, tended to be circumcised. But jesus seems to refer to our hearts and minds. Does jesus not affect our hearts and minds? Jesus raised from the day after a traditional 7 day sabbath. Do you think there could be a correlation with the 8th day circumcision and jesus raised from the dead the day after Saturday/the old shabbat?

The way I understand the statement, that we are no longer under the law with reference to the Sabbath, is the following sentences that follow this commandment, which says.." but the seventh day is a sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."...that though we are not under those rules mentioned, the principal of honouring God remains, specifically in relationship to worshipping together with other believers (day of rest and free ourselves from daily chores and work so we can meet and worship fellow believers. However, in certain situations we might not be able to do that and with Jesus, there's no condemnation in such cases as God sees what's in our hearts.

Pastor Lance replies - Claire, Pastor David gave excellent reasons for his answer on the episode. It's fine if you choose to disagree with him. But it may help to know that there's some confusion in the words you use. Sunday is NOT the Sabbath as the Law of Moses defines it. The Sabbath is the seventh day and that is Saturday. The Sabbath was something God gave to Israel, not the Church. It was a sign of the covenant God made with Israel at Sinai. Christians have a better covenant. As the writer of Hebrews says, we have ENTERED God's rest and ceases from works or a performance of the law as the means of our acceptance before Him. Everyday is Sabbath for us because we have entered God's rest. As far as church history is concerned, Yes, the first Christians kept the Sabbath BECAUSE THEY WERE JEWS and wanted to participate in the life of Israel. But are you aware that they also met, as Christians, on Sunday, because it commemorated the day Jesus rose? The DISTINCTIVE day the followers of Jesus have met has ALWAYS been Sunday. When Gentiles became Christians, there was no need for them to keep the Sabbath because they are not a part of Israel. This is all a matter of history.

This explanation is, unfortunately, bad hermeneutics with a lack of understanding about prophecy. You can't understand the Sabbath fulfillment if you don't understand His appointed times (moedim). And you put "entering His rest" (being in His presence in the inner court during the 7th day) in jeopardy Matt 5:19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. @@marymorris6329 It's a legal thing when God makes us heirs. I think Jesus was resurrected and crowned before God said, "Today I have begotten thee." And Mary Magdalene says in Gospel of Thomas that Jesus would make her male. I'm pretty sure it's about adoption as heir or FULL inheritance. Not about sex. After years of abuse, I just can't go where women aren't welcome at the pulpit or to teach a Bible study. And, btw, my county is black, white, and Hispanic. Like you, I live in the US. re: days, Genesis Ch. 1, 'the evening and the morning was the _ day' . Note I am not a Jew. The time is probably a moot point. Scripture says man shall think to change times and laws, and people have. Jesus in His teachings expanded some commandments, but left others alone. Since God gave the commandments, and only He can change any, and yes Jeshua - Jesus IS God, tell me - where in Scripture did God our Creator change the 4th Commandments that Jesus himself kept, as did the disciples after Christ's ascension.
