In this video, we investigate in depth the likelihood of the P365's Striker breaking in half, which could cause a potential accidental discharge. Is it likely for the back portion of the striker to break off??? Watch the video and decide for yourself.
This is the final engineering review of a series of reviews we've done over the past two years covering the P365. We will now be reviewing other popular firearms as time allows and as the business continues to grow. When trying to find “whom to trust”, in just about EVERY walk of life, I ALWAYS look at “what” the person stands to gain from his POV. Being that you aren’t employed by Sig... AND you use your own equipment/money, to support your findings... I am WAY MORE inclined to trust what you say, than most “gun guys”.

The testing done on this video, should make it clear that the Sig P365 is well designed, tough as it can be and has the blessings of a professional Firearms Engineer. It’s quite clear that there are lots of people who continue to develop scenarios in their minds, whereas things don’t work or fail. These people are overthinking and need to relax.

Thanks for taking the time and money for the testing. The primer fire with a light strike doesn't surprise or concern me. Your professional experience with a demonstration has convinced me that the striker foot is simply not a potential point of failure.

I’ve wondered how well a gun as small as a P365 would hold up to the pounding of high round counts and you sure answered that question with 12,000 rounds plus. Pretty amazing and thanks for all the effort you put into the videos!

This is such a well done video, thank you so much for making it. If I carried this anywhere other than appendix, I wouldn’t worry about the “unique” striker safety that sig uses. However, with sig’s recent track record, I don’t trust them enough to carry this anymore. You’ve finally put to bed the “could it or not” argument I’ve had in my head since I purchased my 365.

Thank you for such a thorough test. This is much better than a short term "gauntlet" test. MIM is new to me, but now I have much more confidence in my 365. I did see a Springfield Hellcat with a broken striker. It was the foot or sear contact that broke off on the Hellcat striker. Thanks again.

Thanks for posting this. Another thing for people to remember, is that the odds of the striker lug simply shearing off while the pistol is being carried in a holster in a static striker-ready position, are below zero. It's just not going to happen under any conceivable circumstance. As an aside, there are no reported failures of any kind involving that component of the P365 that I have heard of anywhere, and this pistol is one of the most popular micro 9's ever made, with many thousand of them carried daily.

I like this video. It did build some of my confidence in the strength of the striker. Thank you for making the video. However, since you were "trying to break it" I would've loved to see you pull the striker back in the slide and release it allowing that little extention on the striker sear to slap into the drop safety. Pull it back to the regular cocked position and release it several times letting it slam into the drop safety. If it doesn't break, pull it back further and further until ultimately pulling it as far back as physically possible and letting it slam into the drop safety. That would provide a more realistic situation of what would be happening inside the gun instead of bending it in a vice. Thanks again for making this video though! Good stuff!

We also have to account for the odds of the big if that the striker lug broke off it would likely do it during re-engagement and tumble and bind the striker. It's so unlikely that something bad would happen. I was convinced after the vise.

Great vid! Seeing how you cranking on that sear didn't bust it, that was definitely reassuring! Considering all of us who are carrying this pistol aiwb are flagging our nether regions all day, yeh that was a concern, the what if....mine's got the manual safety, but that would do nothing with the sear broken off. In regards to that little spring, I think that may be the "return" spring which Sig eventually omitted for the P365. That's why the striker kind of rattles in there when you pull the trigger while the pistol is not cocked, and then tip the barrel up or down. I think that's also why the thumb safety will or won't engage, depending on barrel position when last pulling the trigger in the uncocked pistol. In any case, awesome testing bud, thanks much!

I do appreciate the fact that you went through this experiment and demystified the striker myth. The truth is that this test was performed on a single gun. Having heard of too many issues about the P365 even watching this, does not give me confidence that my gun won't have the issue, my gun is not the one in the video. I put my money and business on a Glock 43x for that reason. There are now issues with the Sig P320, its not Sig's best period to buy from them, perhaps in the future.

I know multiple people besides myself who have had 0 issues with their OG 365's. This doesn't diminish the fact that there were issues, but people act as if you were gaurenteed to have an issue if you had an early model (mine was after the striker fixes so 1 year after release). The P365 remains the most compelling small offering on the market for me, and the only other option I'm keeping my eyes on is the one from HK (would take years for the aftermarket to catch up).

Great video, and with an actual round there seems to be more pressure to actually ignite a primer. Just a what I’ve seen. I’m simply a garage (have no real experience engineer lol). But excellent video and thanks from the bottom of my heart for being honest! You could have easily finagled or deleted footage but thants honesty at its best! I'm willing to bet if you would have used radial stress, it would have sheared off. The vice would have held for twisting radially instead of just pulling upwards. Regardless, the amount of force required shows the engineers did their job. I am truly amazed that a MIM part is so sturdy.

Thank you for commenting, Owl! I was trying to imitate the tension and compression vectors it sees in the gun. The stress described in your comment sounds more torsional, and it doesn't appear to experience torsion while in the gun unless I am mistaken (which I've been mistaken plenty of times). Stay Safe!

Regrettably, I am a 'new' subscriber...I wish that I had found your channel since it's inception! This is the second episode that I have seen and already you have touched on something that I have brought up on a few other channels, that I am not sure that they understood the importance of 'notch sensitivity' and 'stress risers', insofar as the role that they play in material strength failures... especially, in situations where work-hardening can occur. You also mentioned the importance of ductility and understanding the tradeoff between yield strength and hardness. I know that it might get a bit technical, but it would be great if you could go into some detail about the pressure levels involved with the onset of work hardening and the corresponding consequences for 'fatigue strength' vs. 'yield strength'! I know that this is a huge question requiring quite a lot of background but I have an idea given your audience, that many may find it worthwhile! Thanks in advance for considering this question and as always, for your service!

I feel much more comfortable with my p365 x macro, a lot of Glock guys telling me it's not safe. It is, and it's reliable, slim fit and great ccw, even better with the comp on the x macro... Happy i got one. Thanks again

Very interesting. I'm not a engineer. I do have over 30 years of reloading experience. High primers usually require a 2nd strike to seat the primer, then it ignites with a second strike. Primers do back out with just the primer in the empty case. With a loaded cartridge the primer backs out, then reseats with pressure. You would need to do a live ammo test to get accurate results. I believe the pistol would fire with a broken pin, but I think it highly unlikely the pin will break.

That's a great point Monte! With this particular test however it is a bit unsafe to use live ammo. I don't trust my "punch holding" abilities enough for that. 😅

Thabks for taking the time and effort to run these tests. I am now convinced that I will not be purchasing the P365. The chances of the striker lug breaking is low; however I am not taking a chance with my testes. Sticking with a proven striker system which is not completely cocked (no pun intended) back and has a firing pin safety completely blocking the firing pin in case of an emergency (ie Glock, Springfield, CZ)

Get ready to be disappointed then because striker fired guns are moving in that direction. The new shield plus has this design, the new Glock performance trigger has this etc.

The Shield as well as M&P strikers have always had that design but S&W and Glock both have striker plungers that physically block the front of the striker providing a secong barrier point or safety. Sig decided to to go with just one point. Now if both of those companies would get rid or disable that plunger then it would be a different story.. a very stupid story.

About that small spring on the striker, it retracts back the striker after the firing pin hits the primer. On Glocks the firing pin stays protruded until the action recycles. On the P365 the firing pin retracts right away, if you manually push forward the striker (still in the slide) so you can see the firing pin protrude, it’ll retract as soon as you let go because of that small spring. Thank you for this experiment, I always wondered what were the internal safeties on the p365 and couldn’t find any “good” answers.

Thanks so much for the time and effort put into this! Your videos are great to watch! Say the back end of the firing pin were to break in some freak accident . It would still require something pulling back the firing pin and letting it go, correct? The firing pin would be held back by the spring and wouldn't go forward without something pushing the firing pin forward. Is that right?

I'm not entirely sure I understand your question, but it would fire if the gun was already cocked. In the sig the firing pin is held in its full retracted position, unlike a glock where it is only partially cocked and is pulled back the rest of the way by the trigger pull.

Thank you so much for your time and effort. If time and funds allow please do a review/experiment on the 320 striker assembly for a comparison to this one and of course why those could have failed. Other thing though is that sig probably addressed that issue and the striker in new versions of the 320 will be updated so on 2nd thought of writing this it probably wouldn't explain why there might have been accidents in the past should it have been due to parts failing

Amazingly informative video. As I watched the testing part I kept thinking about a couple of things. Your first attempt you drug it back and released it, failure to fire. Then you reevaluated the technique and rolled it up and out of the way, it fired. You used this technique the rest of the test. So the questions would be. Are you replicating the actual design with a clean release? Do you think that even with the cleanest of breaks there might be a bit of drag as the break occurs, having a similar result to the first try? I am not an engineer so my uneducated thought would be the safety spring might have worked as you described if the release is not "clean". Curious what you think about it.

I know a little something about breaking things, that striker is impressive. Try doubling up on the safety spring, that would drop the primer indention to 4000th or lower, and if that does work, would it effect other normal operations of the gun.

Would the striker safety plunger still block the firing pin movement inside the channel, if the lug broke off? When removing the striker, I need to press down on the plunger to get the striker to move. Seems its putting some friction/blocking movement of the striker in some fashion.

Am I correct in my understanding that while that lug clearly held up against your torture test and prying, in reality, the only force it actually has to contend with on a regular basis is what the firing pin spring places on it? And the only time it would ever see greater force placed on it is in the rare event it actually does come into contact with the firing pin safety block in which case it very likely holds up just fine since even then the force wouldn't amount to anywhere near what you placed on it with the vice and chuck and even if it somehow was damaged, it would slow the pin more than enough to prevent issue (not simply break through/snap like a blade of grass as if nothing was there). Haha! Agreed! Those look like excessively light primer strikes. It would be interesting to see if it would still ignite them if it were a complete cartridge. Less than 1/3 of the normal indent and it still went off?? We could do a live fire test on the range, but I think the main point of the video is to note the strength of the striker.

@@steven3379 did you even watch the video?…. The entire argument to be made here is that all of the internal safeties on the sig rely on the lug/sear of the striker. And if that piece were to break that the gun could fire. He set out to prove that couldn’t happen but cutting the lug off the striker and trying to get it to ignite the primer. Which it did every single time. You must have either not watched the video or don’t understand the mechanics of the gun and what the whole video was about

I really appreciate your experiment. I have a 2nd generation XL, with a Romeo zero. My main carry gun is my sheild 2.0 but was gifted my XL. I carry it from time to time but have always had the smallest feeling of mistrust about it, probably just psychological. Does the sheild have the same striker set up?

I’ve always had the same feeling: just a nagging “what if” and this video has provided enough proof that I will be retiring my 365 (I’m an appendix carrier) The shield uses are more traditional plunger striker safety that blocks from the “front” (the striker runs into the plunger) and is much more safe (in my opinion) than the p365 striker safety.

@18:40 and @35:48 That spring is not gonna stop anything. Because if it would stop the striker, then the gun won't fire normally either. That's there just to extract faster the striker from the primer, after ignition. They had those strikers getting stuck there and breaking. They later even changed the tip shape, to a wedge, to be easier to be pushed out from the depression. Also, if yours didn't break in the vice with steady loading it doesn't mean that there cannot be a metallurgical failure in another part, or the repeated shocks won't age the material. The safety block needed to be in front of the striker and that would made all this irrelevant.

This was my thought as well with the safety block. But I think the block also engages the pin inside the channel as well and not just the lug. Going to take a look at that soon. If thats the case, then the only way the pin would be able to contact the primer would be to somehow break in the middle of the pin, however, then the return spring would prevent that from happening as there would no longer be any pressure from the striker spring pushing the broken half forward.

I just took a look and in fact the firing pin block ONLY engages with the lug. I think if they could move the spring forward just 1/16th of an inch or so forward they could make a lug on the shaft of the pin itself to have a redundant point of contact for the block.

Thanks for this Stephen. The thing I keep asking myself is since the striker is captured in a narrow channel in the slide, even if it broke inside the gun (where you cut it off) wouldn’t it still be stuck in the same position and thereby still serve its purpose? Seems like it has nowhere to go.

they also changed the extractor when the XL came out across the lineup, the new extractor is not compatible with older slides. Not sure the reason for it, perhaps it makes it more tolerant of dropping the slide over a cartridge already in the chamber. Any thoughts on this from an engineer perspective?

Not sure if my request is appropriate but you appeared to have a significant background in firearms and also appear to have handled the SIG P365 more than most reviewers. I picked up a new P365X (date of mfg 05/27/21) looks okay but if I rapidly shake the gun up and down I hear and feel a slight slapping between the top of the frame grip module and bottom of the slide assembly. I know the parts have an acceptable tolerance to allow the slide action but, should you hear and feel a small slapping or tapping together when I vigorously shake the gun up and down between these two parts? I have a 20y+ old H&K USP Compact 40 Variant 7 LEM that’s my point of reference and it’s different. Thank you.

Yes, that will happen especially if there is no upward pressure from a loaded magazine pushing the slide up against the rails on the chassis.

Did you test shear strength of the lug and the sear? The firing pin isn't really going to bend. I heard you mention something about the spring being damaged, was that the safety spring? Also would have been great to see through the firing pin channel how the firing pin block also blocks the striker itself and not just the lug.

Great comments Bryan! The striker appears to be more in tension (on the bottom side, aka the sear side) and compression (on the top side) from a bending force applied to the sear surface, or at least that's the direction of the force vectors as I see them. The spring I mentioned appears to be more of a striker return spring and not a safety spring. If my memory serves me correctly, the striker safety (aka drop safety) only interacts with the lug sticking off of the side of the striker itself. Otherwise there would be no purpose for the lug if it interacted with the body of the striker (similar to Glock, for example).

In regard to the striker lug, I was referring to the actual movement of the cylindrical block as it moves up and down to allow passage of the striker through the channel. Also was curious and I guess I could test myself but does the rear lug on the striker catch on the sear if the front lug breaks? Are you still able to pull the trigger and ignite the primer with the rear lug caught on the sear?

Just took my new P365 to the range for the first time this morning, only issue I saw was my 12 round mag (which is super tight getting the 12th round in) had a FTE when I shot it with 12+1. Seems it’s so tight the slide can’t cycle with that 12th round in. My 2nd 12 mag is easier to load and that one shot fine 12+1.

I do understand that You Tube demonetizes Gun channels and creators deserve and need to get paid! Creators should just take the money and say they represent whichever product. Everyone is biased as we are human. Gun related company’s should do their advertising directly through creators paying them and use no threat names for guns and ammo so they do not get sued and we keep our manufactures. Guns and ammo work the same without scary names anti gun groups like to use in court.

From what we've tested if it fires with the spring then it will fire without it. Maybe that spring is to help reduce the movement/noise produced when the striker is in it's "fired" position.
