But the BIG takeaway, the social dilemma is how addictive the AI algorithms make the apps. Children especially are suffering from addiction, depression, self-esteem issues and ultimately higher rates of suicide as a result. Who monitors and/or polices the apps when its out of parental control? Obviously, those at the top could care less about the statistics, they are avoiding all the way to the bank.
@malakisfl9288

Disagree. Nothing is outside of the parents control. This thought process means, parents are expecting others to be somewhat responsible for their childrens exposure to these platforms.

suicide rates are actually lower than they were in the 90s. The rates fluctuate and the largest increase has been among middle aged men.

Addiction is not a new thing. Not sure how the algorithm is to blame for this. Parents need to understand social platforms better and not just demonize social media because they didnt grow up with it or refuse to learn it. Stop putting your head in the sand and learn a new comminication style. Sounds funny saying this but be the adult and take more resposibility and learn

@aydooknow welcome to the world haha This is not a new thing. I don't totally disagree with what your saying but I think the balance is definitely out of whack with parents looking for scape goats rather than taking ownership

Funny. I thought the end was strange in that their solution to people just willy nilly believing what they want is regulation. I'm not sure if that = higher taxation and censorship

@@oeautobody3586 well you can tax the big data companies and those who use AI/robots to displace workers and collect data to be returned in the form of a UBI. That model itself can even transition us off income tax to a tax on just certain luxuries we spend on.

Technicolor Beast - Obviously I don’t as I did not take into account “internet tough guys” who can’t help themselves from making assumptions about people based on one comment and spew vitriol in response. What’s also been found about ITGs a.k.a. trolls is that since they don’t have access to the original poster’s context or nonverbal cues (which comprises 80-90% of communication), the brain can actually process a post as a perceived threat, which triggers the amygdala (in the brain) to activate the sympathetic nervous system. The troll is then overtaken by the compulsory need to reply with snarky comments about their assumptions. Trolls often suffer from a deficit of self-efficacy, which is a result of various contributing factors, such as personal experience and neurobiology. As a way to compensate for these deficits, ITGs seek internet content to dispute as an attempt to trigger neurotransmitters that cause happiness: dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. All while not realizing that this is only a temporary boost, and to achieve long-lasting improvement from these issues, ITGs benefit more from showing compassion to themselves and others. This reduces the cortisol hormone and promotes oxytocin & neurobiology that allows the troll to become more flexible and accepting in their life ultimately reducing the compulsion to “clap back” online. All of this confirms that an ITG’s response is actually a reflection of the issues held by rude commenter instead of the validity of their snarky responses being accurate. Obviously, this is a topic that I’m passionate about, therefore studied, so if you’d like to discuss more, please leave your email address and we can connect to discuss further.

I work for one of Silicon Valley's top social listening firms. This documentary is spot on and everyone should watch it and be cognizant of how surveillance capitalism works. John, equating tabloids to social media is wrong. Most know they're bunk. They don't have the ability to track you, know what you like, share, comment on, with sophisticated AI learning everything about you, and then sharing your individual profile to advertisers and other networks who will bombard you with targeted ads in other digital media forms. TV networks are gaining some of that ability via cheap "smart TVs", streaming devices, and just your ISP sharing your data to advertisers. The documentary touched on outside forces wanting to shape public opinion/beliefs and that aspect needs to be stressed a lot more. The dangers are not exaggerated and if they have to use social media to spread this warning, then so be it.

Nah man, we foster teens. One mom would have literal tantrums screaming and kicking and throwing things when the wifi went off at night. We would sometimes grab her baby out of the room so he was safe. One time she was so mad she passed out and we had to have the ambulance take her to the ER. I talked to my counselor and she said she was not surprised...also, if you work with people in poverty, they do know every gas station and restaurant that has free wifi. Yea and it do be kinda sad that this is how it works. I don’t watch that much Netflix anyways and I don’t know if I want to associate myself with people that ignore the countless deaths from Covid

1) I totally saw the Cruella resemblance 2) You’re spot on. Personal responsibility. I was super disappointed that those practical tips at the end were like a total afterthought! 3) The story line with the 11 yr old and her response to the elephant ears comment - I think they hit the nail on the head with that one, and the biggest take away for me was that children need to be trained how to use social media responsibly and maybe wait a good long while before allowing them access.

If you are a liberal, John will challenge you. If you are a conservative, John will challenge you. If you watched this filtered through either one of them, you'll get NOTHING from this. If you watched this with the filter of "this only applies to the crazies on the other side, not me" with the intent of weaponizing it against your adversaries, don't waste your time. If you watch this from a filter of self-improvement, not external condemnation, then I highly recommend this video.
