Is the Sony a7R IV (A) still worth it in 2021?

As we approach the tail end of Sony's typical upgrade cycle for their a7R series, I thought I'd emphasise how relevant and important this camera remains to be in the super high resolution segment of the market.

Great Video! I'll add that when I don't need the huge 61 meg files, I shoot in APS-C mode with smaller APS-C lenses and get 26 megs and great AF coverage. It's like having two cameras in one. Great Camera!

This review is a joy to watch! Its so well made and I love the fact that the camera is judged on its actual credentials within its price range and specifically for what is particularly good at (resolution and image quality) instead of just comparing it to the newest and best ... and MUCH MORE expensive A1. A balanced and nuanced review from a professional user of the gear! Thanks for that 🙂

The portrait of Lewis Hamilton is actually cropped as well, which is even more mind blowing. It has a tiny bit of grain added as it was never meant to be viewed so close up, but the clarity of the IWC is still super impressive.

Good video, I have this camera and use it for wildlife paired with the 200-600mm lens, I don't always achieve 61 megapixels worth of resolution (detail) as I can scale a lot of higher ISO images to 20 megapixels with no loss in quality, but in good light, focus and right shutter speed the detail I can capture is incredible and the ability to crop is unreal for wildlife photography. A lot of the time im cropping down to an APS-C sized image in post, but the ability to have that extra framing to acquire to subject in the viewfinder in that split second is game changing.

Great video as always. I am currently shooting with a 5Diii with only 2 eos lenses. And I have been researching the switch to mirrorless but at an affordable price point since this is a hobby. I know it is a little older but would the Sony A7iii be a good/worth while upgrading or should I save up for the IV or other options? Thanks.

for landscapes, there is a very good video of DPreview TV comparing the A7R4 and the Nikon Z7II, and they gave the win to the Nikon. Not a huge margin, but the dynamic range is batter and the lack of AA filter gives you better sharpness it is quite cheaper too, especially if you consider the first Nikon Z7 that has the same image quality

Thoughtful video and great images. I shoot architecture and find your point of view spot on. My only issue with Sony is they seem to have more sensor dust than canon and the wireless tethering Ive grown to depend on is not supported. Not a big deal though. The 5D M3 and 5D SR served me well for years and are still great cameras today. Like you, I went for the R4's amazing sensor and a company known for tech advancements. I use specialized canon lenses that are easily adapted to sony and I've been super pleased with the R4.
@eastonchang
@eastonchang 2 жыл бұрын
The sensor dust is insane, I think it’s a combination of full frame with no mirror to protect it. The R5 has a mechanism specifically to cover the sensor for lens changes. I’ve never had this level of dust before but also the Sony is my first FF mirrorless.

Hello, I have a few questions hoping you could answer for me to decide which one to buy: a7r IV it a7r IVA? I know the “a”’is about $1 higher cost. I saw mixed reviews and message about which model is discontinued. 1. Which model released Dec 2021? Sony a7r IVA or a7r IV? I thought a7r IV is older, released in 2019 and discontinued. 2. It seems a7r IV is still a better camera vs. the new version a7r IVA (besides the MP and larger screen). True? 3. Is there a problem with the slow image saving vs the IIR model? After a pic is captured, you have to wait a sec or two for the live image to be visible on the display. Comparing to the Nikon D4S or even the D850, you just focus, shoot and moving in to the next shot without the delayed of a sec or two. I am using SanDisk Extreme Pro card. Thanks!

I just sold my R3 to get the R4A. Feels a bit faster, better grip, better buttons and way better EVF compared to the R3. I barely notice the 61mpx versus the R3's 42mpx on the computer. I'm always cropping so the extra resolution is great to have here, PLUS getting 26mpx in APS-C mode kinda saves me from buying the overpriced Sony teleconverter. I'm a hobby shooter doing mostly landscapes, travel shots etc, no need for a buffer monster for sports

Hi Easton, Great video and look your work! You set the benchmark high. I’m a beginner but have a thirst for anything quality. I have the A7R4 as well. Are you planning to upgrade to the A1 or waiting for the next gen A7R5? Interesting that you didn’t swap back to Canon with the R5 and R3 releases, and down the line R1. Gotta love what Sony and Canon are doing to push one another. Hope Nikon and Panasonic can catch up as well as competition is good for us.

I'm still loving the quality out of the A7R4 so I don't feel like I need to upgrade yet! Some quality of life improvements (screen resolution, EVF, etc) would be nice but unnecessary at this stage. For my type of work I don't need fast AF so I've still been adapting my Canon glass.
@pawelmod3292

Interesting that you are talking about Canon R5 R3 and R1. Canon R5 has lower resolution (still amazing camera) and R3 most probably will be only 24MP when finally released. Additionally R1 and R3 will be sport cameras, whereas Sony a7r iv is not…
@nomad0714

@@pawelmod3292, yeah I should have been more clear. I am a hybrid shooter but now I shoot more stills than video but I’m moving into a more 50/50 shooter. I’m looking for something like the A1, single all-in-1 body but it is a bit steep for me and the low res screen bugs me for that price. The A7R4 is used for studio, landscape, and portrait work and I love that I can crop and still get more MP than current Sony bodies at ~26-27MP, but the video specs are not good enough for what I need. So I ventured towards the R5 last year to test and learn. It’s also a great stills camera first with has impressive video capabilities but the overheating is an issue for what I do, unless I use an external recorder which I don’t wish to do. It’s not reliable enough for long form work and having 2 bodies is too costly and/or an external recorder is too much bulk. Some people prefer two bodies and I have that current setup, but would like to try to downsize. For sports and wildlife, I still use the A9 and don’t feel the need to upgrade. I’ve added the A7R4 when I need more details than speed. On the other hand, the R5 can perform similar to both of these camera bodies for stills and can perform better in video with overheating management. But this is too costly to have two systems. I still prefer the DR on Sony cameras. I’m still sorting it out which way to go for hybrid shooting but it’s good to see that Easton is a pro who used Canon cameras for years and still uses the A7R4. I may trade the A9 for the A7S3 as my new setup and see what Canon will do to solve the R5 overheating or maybe exchange for the R5m2. What about you?

@@nomad0714 Thx for response and all details. These days are perfect because you have so many options! Personally I'm using A7 III at this moment. It is good enough for my video needs - 4k@24/30 is perfect for me at quality is much better comparing to A7r IV. At the same time A7 III has its limits for action/sport photography that I'm doing more and more. 10fps is good enough but I'm missing the resolution (I need that because sometimes is very difficult to have good framing) and perhaps I do not like the rolling shutter in silent mode (I'm not using mechanical shutter in A7 iii because I noticed some strange scratches in it and it is well known issue). So A1 would be the best but it is too $$$ for me. That being said I try to figure out if I should upgrade to A9 (perfect AF, buffer, rolling shutter but small res) or perhaps upgrade to A7r IV (the best resolution, worse than A9 but better than A7 iii AF, poor rolling shutter in silent mode but perhaps mechanical shutter will do the job). Or maybe even wait for A74. Well, decisions, decisions, decisions :-P I will for sure not go for Canon because Sony as a system has the best $$$/quality ration for me (a lot of bodies on the market, a lot of lenses from many brands) Best regards, stay safe Pawel

Yes, it definitely still is; the problem is ONCE YOU TRY AN A1 or 7SIII: Then the A7RIV and any other previous generation camera's buffer times become almost insufferable.... That being said, I still love the 61 Megapixels of the RIV, it is fantastic for Cityscape or Landscape Photography, nothing is like it!!

YES ! But if you have ice in your stomach and then it can be worth to wait for a Sony A7RV with a 9.5 megapixels EVF and new menu system and much better sensor and IBIS as well as dials for both shutter speed and ISO. Sony are the best mirrorless camera system because of all the Lenses you can get to this system and there are plenty of Sony cameras to choose new or second hand. I do not want a swivel monitor, I use the EVF 99% of the time !

the only thing holding me back from buying this camera is the bad low light, even in those pictures that you showed in this video, you can see in some of the darker one how the image falls apart, i think i will either buy the a74 or wait for the a7r5 (if they manage to improve low light)

I would say the a7RIV is worth getting if the price tag is $2,500 u.s. dollars or less. I don't recommend the new a7RIV-A model because the price tag is $3,500 us dollars and it falls behind the Canon R5 now. I would wait next year for the a7RV model since its going to be 3 years. Sonly likely will release a new a7R model in 2022 with Express Type A memory card slots, 61-mega pixels, flip LCD screen and most of all, add the amazing video autofocus feature along with 10-bit colors and 4K/60fps. A7RV will be worth the $3,500 us dollars price tag for sure so save up for that camera next year.
@harryvuemedia5106

@Rebel Hikes It's still worth it even if its crop 4K/60fps. The a7R series is more for portrait and landscape photography. 4K/60fps is an added bonus to the camera. If you want full-frame 4K/60fps, then get an a7Siii and stop complaining.
@harryvuemedia5106
@harryvuemedia5106 2 жыл бұрын
@Rebel Hikes I would recommend the a7IV since its video quality has improved a lot now with the amazing eye-autofocus. If you only wnat photographs and don't care too much about videos, then the a7C would be the best way for your backpacking since its a smaller camera with a full-frame sensor. A7RIV is great for landscapes for and its video autofocus is a bit better than the a7C. I personally would go for the a7IV since its a hybrid camera with great video and photo features. Prices will be the other big factor as the a7RIV is at $3,000, a7IV is at $2,500 and a7C is at $1,800. And instead of the Sony 24-105mm F/4, I would go with the Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8. Even though it starts at 35mm instead of 24mm, it opens wide at F/2.8 which is what i prefer F/4 is good enough but i still prefer at least F/2.8 for those dark scenes to get the most light out. The lens is $2,000 though it is like $1,000 more

I believe Sony is going to bump up the megapixel count for the A7RV. Why? Because Canon has already been working on an 80-100mp full frame sensor for years now and they might drop that bomb on Sony's head. But as usual Sony likes to be one step ahead and the A7RV will pack a lot of tech within the $3500 price range.
