The Sony a7R III was released three years ago and has been my main photography and video camera for the past two and a half years. It is still one of the best cameras on the market and I will answer if it is worth buying for landscape photography. I have mainly used it for landscape photography and videography both during the day and the night. I absolutely love this camera and in this video, I share my thoughts on it as a long term review with 2,5 years of experience.

Awesome video. I upgraded from the RII to the RIII in March and am very happy with it. I tried out a family member's RIV, and for what I do it didn't warrant the extra price tag. Now the RIII is my main camera with the RII being a backup/second camera. The 100-400 on the RIII is a whole different level than it was on the RII and that made the upgrade worth it alone. Love using it with the 24GM and 15mm Voigtlander f/4.5 as well.

Another great blog Mads ! I wish you a speedy recovery with your back . I shoot with Canon 5DSR .. I love the sizes of the images it produces and it’s resolution I love . But it requires the latest most expensive lenses from Canon to cope with the resolution . So I chose a Ziess lens and pretty happy with the results it delivers compared to the canon L lenses.

Mads Peter Iversen well to be very honest I bought my Ziess Distagon f2.8 15mm once used for cheaper than a new or used 16/35mm Canon mkII L lens. I personally feel everything about the Ziess out performs the canon 16/35mm and the Ziess has no plastic.

Hi Mads, great video! Have owned the A7RIII since September last year, after having upgraded from the A7III, and just love it to bits! As for the hot shoe, here's a good solution for you, and anyone else concerned with moisture in that area... Pickup the Nikon BS-3 hotshoe cover; it's the same cover that ships with the Nikon D5 DSLR, and is available separately for something like $12 USD, and is an excellent fit on the Sony Alpha 7 bodies. Not a completely air-tight fit mind you, but offers great protection for the hotshoe and doesn't look totally out of place on it, and no externally visible Nikon branding ;)

I would say your thoughts and views were well balanced and you have produced memorable content that is testament to what can be achieved with the Sony. With the R5 being unveiled this week, it will be interesting to see the full specs and features and the price and whether canon tempts existing canon users to upgrade or other users to jump across.

Can't beat the a7Rii right now, IMHO. Same sensor as the A7Riii, but half the price. Smaller body, albeit with worse battery life. I prefer the shooting experience-- the focus points are actually visible, unlike the a7Riii. Absolutely love my Rii for street and cityscape.

Thank you Mads. I think we over worry about dirt in the sensor. I live in Oman , which is mostly desert. I quite often change lenses in sand dunes !! Never had an issue. I also traveled to Antarctica with my aR7iii. Again I didn’t have trouble swapping lenses in wet and snowy conditions. Mind you, I make concerted efforts to shield the sensor when swapping lenses. 99% of time it works.

protip: if you cant take a decent photo (lets exclude pro sports or -50c K2 peak) with any modern FF, it's only on you. everything else is pixelpeeping. go outside, work with what you have. there's joy in the discipline of overcoming quirks and odds. yesterday i mounted FD 50mm 1.4 on A7R II while local salesman was screeching about muh busy bokeh. invest in lenses or just have fun, every piece of glass has different character, its up to you to recognize that and utilize it the best way you can. if you end up having 15 brand new lenses and unscratched camera youre building a collection, not a portfolio.

When I went digital from my Minolta Maxxum I picked Sony because the lenses I had could be used on the Sony. At present I'm using an A7R III and after many years of use I have retired my final A-mount lens and adapter. My only disappointment so far was upgrading from the A77 to the A7R III and finding the rear screen is no longer fully articulated. I might consider upgrading when the A7R V comes out but that would depend on the spec and features.
@metphmet
@metphmet 4 жыл бұрын
Please , please, please Sony never implement a fully articulated screen ! Keep a fast , simple and discrete tilting screen and just implement the Fuji XT3 solution which allows to tilt in both directions.
@earshelhogan6148
@earshelhogan6148 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer the tilting screen as well, and not just because of the L-Bracket. I recently picked up an A7S III, and it is not natural feeling to look off to the side of the camera (and away from your subject) with the fully articulating screen swung out all the way. I found the tilting screen on my D850 and D750 to feel much more intuitive.

The crazy thing about the A7R3 is that it is still ... in 2021 ... a great camera and prices are really good right now. Maybe I‘ll buy one ... 42MP is a sweetspot in my eyes. It‘s big enough and still can be handled pretty easy. I like your style of videos btw! Keep up with the great work. :)

Hi Mads, are you sure that the rear LCD actually died? What happens easily on these cameras is that you get either a water drop or perhaps some salt water residue on the eye sensor by the EVF. When that happens it appears that the rear LCD has failed but it's actually just that it thinks that your eye is at the EVF due to contamination on the eye detect sensor - it is very common. Simply wiping off the eye detection sensor brings the rear LCD back.

I liked very much your video, coming from Uruguay we 're late in getting cameras. So I was thinking to switch from my now older 5ds r for the 7r III, I crop quite a bit on my bug photography, so the mpx are needed. Do you have any video teaching the button configuration you are using? I need that soo much!!!!! I hope you are better from your back, same stuff here, so less weight needed as well!!! Best regards from distant Uruguay, and thanks again.

I hope the A7R3 is worth buying because that's what I use. I still don't see the need to "upgrade" to the A7R4. In fact, I just added the a6600 and the two new aps-c lenses which I think will be fine for me when I don't want to use my full frame camera. Hope your back gets well soon.

I agree with you on prices of Sony lenses, but I still love my Sony a6600. I probably won't go to Canon either although I still love their cameras and lenses but the Sony works better for me, I do street-urban and motorsports and sometimes I need to upload to my phone and my a6600 links up fast to my phone. My experience with the Canon Camera Connect app was usually a pain and it would disconnect at times. The Sony app is so much better. A losing all that camera gear weight is a big plus.

I will say, not EVERYONE wants a fully articulating screen. I HATE not having the screen on the same axis as the lens, and trying to hold the camera with the screen out to the side is incredibly awkward. I specifically returned my A7 IV in favor of the A7R III due to this irritation. The X-T5 is very nice in this regard in that it allows flipping the screen out in both landscape and portrait orientation without having the screen exposed or hanging off the side of the camera the way the fully articulated screens do.

Thanks Mads, very interesting even as a Canon APSC shooter. I'm planning to go mirrorless full frame in the next 12-24 months and have just found the Canon range to be soooo rugged and liked the fact that their mirrorless cameras did automatically protect the sensor ...oh... and flippy screen! can't afford the new R5 price but will be looking at Sony v Canon when I upgrade and by then the S7RIV will definitely be in the running as I've a few good APSC lenses I will have to hang onto for a while so the APSC crop mode on the A7RIV will still be great resolution. My main reservation is lenses...like you said the Sony G master are stupid prices and I'm reading great things about the Canon RF lenses ....when I can afford them. Decisions, decisions!! Hope your back is better soon. Always look forward to you episodes. Come back to UK soon and do something with pebbles and owner !! :-)

Odd they don't have the articulated screen. Even the A99 and A99ii had one. I'm torn between the Riv or Riii upgrading from an A99ii. The A99ii and Riii are very similarly specced from what I see. Just the different mounts, so I'm not sure the Riii would be an upgrade for me. Thanks for your really helpful video. I should have said, I only shoot in a studio so I don't even use a lot of the features of my A99ii let alone the extras in these newer ones.

I'm a Nikon user for more than 35 years and I was considering moving for Sony, mainly because I'm a bit tired of Nikon taking so much time to listen to their clients but I think this new Z mount is reserving some fantastic surprises so I'm staying to see. I don't know but could it be that they could put a bigger sensor, not medium format but bigger, with around 50Mpix with a low light and dinamic range performance that whould be the next bench mark? It's just a dream I know but why that big mount?

@@JJ-vp3bd For my purposes, the 24-105 is a flexible and sharp general-purpose lens. The 20 mm is 'better', but more specialist. I haven't used it, but it looks like an excellent lens for landscapes and low-light work. I'd assess how much you're shooting wide, and whether you'll use the 1.8 (astrophotography etc). 24 mm is usually wide enough for me, and during the day I'm typically at f/8 for any landscape stuff anyway, so the zoom lens works great. Sounds like a 5D Mark IV would also have been a great choice. Seriously, as opposed to your level of technical and artistic prowess, any of the major camera brands produce cameras that would not be the limiting factor for most of us who are not at your level. My advice is always pick your first system carefully, invest in camera, lenses and accessories for that system and then stick with it.

I just picked up a a7 iii with the 28-70mm kit lens and was looking at buying a decent lens for nlandscape photos, but do you think I should trade up for the A7R3 and pay the extra... @MadsPeterIversen

@@MadsPeterIversen Yeah, that's what it comes down to. I don't wanna wet clean the sensor (or the glass pane in front of it) every time I come back from a shoot. I sold my A7RIII and bought a XT3 for landscape photography after using Sony for 5 years, sold my gmasters as well. I love the colors and files straight out of the XT3 and the feel of using the camera. The Fuji lags more than the Sony, the Fuji has better glass to price point for lenses, the Sony has better dynamic range, the Fuji has better color science in my eyes, Sony you have to work the file into looking natural.... etc, ya da ya da . I always operate better and I feel more creative when I feel restricted by my gear. It forces me to be more creative and to push everything to its best. With the Sony I felt like photography was too easy

That’s interesting. I’m considering to go the other way: switch from Fuji to Sony. I’ve been playing with the a7riii for about a month and I feel it’s challenging for me. Achieving sharp focus across the frame when taking a landscape photo (or on people with large apertures) is more difficult to achieve than it has been with my Fuji. In that regard, the cropped sensor offers an advantage. I’ve also noticed the challenge when editing, the larger resolution files require more fine tuning than the cropped sensor files. What is that you find challenging about Fuji cameras?

This is an impressive camera. I would buy it as my second camera hands down, because it's dynamic range and fantastic ISO/noise rate. But, for me (and this is a personal opinion) the Olympus EM1 MarkIII is unbeatable for a landscape photographer if these two big advantages are not the most important for you. The weight and the extreme quality of the lenses, is allowing me to take a FF equivalent range from 14 to 300 continues f2,8 to any hike (talking about more than 30km walking). The stabilization allows me to leave the tripod at home is it is a forest or waterfall shooting session (seriously). The LiveND allows me to leave the filter system at home and I only take a threaded polarizer (again is forest case) The weather sealing is asthonishing... and the 50Mpx handheld is AWESOME (reduces the noise/ISO so much that it becomes better than a FF) and dynamic range and colors are better too. (pitty that the subject must be still). Also the depth of field is bigger than a large sensor which reduces the times that I need focus stacking Said so... with the Olympus, forget to be even close to any night photography to the Sony. You can get amazing results with the Oly, but it is just not comparable. But if like me you shoot basically during the day, sunsets, sunrises, forest, waterfalls... I think Olympus technology is really a significant difference. Said so... again. I know some day I will buy one but mostly to use if I can reach with the car to the spot.
