I don't know about the new version, but I can say for certain that the first version is awesome. It solved so many problems for me when doing videos involving one or more persons who are speaking. It can record for 10 hours! So I simply give everybody their own unit and turn on "recording." It creates files in 15-minute increments. I synch up the video and audio channels using a clapperboard. Because each person has their own unit, they essentially are a different channel which I can easily adjust in post. The DR 10L has never let me down.

Great review! Hits all of the really important points. The sleeper in future for a wide variety of use cases is time code. As the tech (like the DR-10L Pro incorporates wireless time code support users demanding this feature are going to explode. Three years from now any tech that doesn’t support wireless time support will be thrown into the deal breaker category without a second thought. Without great audio the best of video is dead.

This is so helpful!! one question regarding the 'white' version of the pro - think it's still not out (like how did you guys at Tascam not foresee this demand), in this case, would you suggest getting the black version and changing the cable to white instead of going for the original 10L?

Great thoughts!! I love that simple solution. I’d invest in a white cable to pair with the pro for the time being. I tend to just rock the white tascam and mic anyway since they don’t have a pro white model yet.

I find the Zoom F2 Bt to be perfect for me as I can start and stop recordings from my phone - honestly perfect for weddings

This is what I've been waiting for! Amazing! I've never worked with 32 bit audio files before but I was just wondering of there were any issues editing the files in Premiere Pro? Is it as simple as just adjusting the Db in post?

Right! Im so excited about this recorder. It was super easy adjusting db and mastering the audio. I use a compressor and EQ with all of my files and it came out sounding so much better than the original Tascam!

What would be the best settings to use if I were to record with two of these recorders concurrently, podcast-style, attached to two different people at an arms length apart?

Sometimes I use my drone to record me walking and talking, and I would use an audio recorder like this and sync the audio in post with a clap. However, my concern with this is that the prop noise from my drone will get picked up in the recording. Would the base model DR-10L be better for me since I can manually adjust the gain with that, just enough to pickup on my voice but not the propellers?

I stopped using lav Mics a long time ago. I currently use a Sony tx660 mics. I used to use the TX650s for just speech backups the sound quality was meh ok, but I no longer use them now. the new TX660 has much better quality! those mics has been life safers for me. I still have my tascams but they are my backups now.. I don't know why you KZfaqrs don't recommend those because the sound quality on them are really good and the convenience with those is much better however, if you like to mic up the bride it's not really good for that Unless you can find a really good hiding spot for it. so I can see why you would want to use a white Tascam to do that. But for the most part I never mic the Bride unless I really need to, but there's no need to if the couple is going to be close together. And if I need to I would just run it through adobe's audio enhancer online. So now I don't see the point in wasting any more money on buying really expensive microphones when the AI on adobe's enhancer will give you really good quality anyway. Even with the Sony tx660 you really don't need to run it through the enhancer but it does helps.

Hey friend, I think getting complacent and using A.I. to "fix" or "enhance" audio shouldn't be the mindset when capturing quality sound on a wedding day. While those tools certainly are useful they aren't perfect. Capturing quality sound that requires minimal processing is the goal/dream and in my opinion, the Tascam does just that for me. I use to not mic the bride as well but have since changed this mindset because it really does enhance your production value and gives you incredible opportunity to fully transport your couples back into not just the main moments of a wedding but the smaller, fleeting moments. Everyone has their own process and comfortability about how they prefer to capture weddings. There is no one size fits all, there are only experiences and perspectives. If this way of capturing works for you then don't fix what isn't broke in my opinion. I definitely prefer quality recorders like the Tascam because they have proven to be reliable for me and my workflow. Thanks for your thoughts!

@@WaywardNorth yeah I agree with you about AI enhancer and I don't always use the AI enhancer. I only use it whenever I need to. Like if it's really windy outside the AI enhancer really helps out may not be perfect but it's better than listening to the wind going through the Mic's all the time, and I agree it's not perfect. But the sound quality that comes out of the Sony tx660 is really impressive. I'm not very good with audio, but to me it sounds just as good as the tascams audio. However the Tascam audio is a little bit better because it has that duo recording. I'm also talking about the older tascams. These newer Tascam with the 32-bit Float Recording is very tempting but I'm not sure if I really want to go back to using lav mics. I also like the fact that you can put two AA's in there. Me personally I don't see the need to really upgrade my wedding films sound good the voiceovers sound good I don't get no complaints about them besides I've bought way too because of my gear acquisition addiction. 🤣🤣

Hey man! I'm trying to decide which recorder to get! I had the dji mics but Rode just released their pro wireless setup which includes 32 bit float! BUT it seems everyone uses these Tascams...and I LOVE the sound. My question is do you think i should get a wireless recorder with internal recording, using a lav attached (giving me a high quality back up) OR grab these Tascam Pros...they just aren't as flexible as the wireless mics (with magnets or sleeves to basically put anywhere) ... help! Are these Tascams still the move??

It’s so hard picking products these days lol I use the Tascams religiously and have had a lot of success with them. That said, I know people that use Rode religiously and love the results. The good thing is, either way you go it’s not going to be a bad investment lol. I chose Tascam because it’s familiar, reliable, compact, and convenient. But I’ve considered going Rode and transmitting audio directly in camera but for me… dealing with frequencies and having the fear that what if my audio isn’t capturing well or that there is interference that I don’t know about. But maybe I don’t know enough about Rode to be unbiased.

Solid video, but I'll be interested how more reviews come out comparing it to the Tentacle Track E which really seems like is the closest competitor to this and has a handful of features I personally like way better than what's offered on the Tascam DR10L Pro. However overall all these companies are making products that can deliver similar end results, that it's not really going to matter what you use, it''s going to matter HOW you use it.

Very true! I agree this new version is competing with the Tentacle directly. I would say the Tentacle might make more sense for the price since you don’t need additionally accessories to jump right into Timecode and monitoring audio directly from the app. You are absolutely right though it’s all about how you use it!

@@WaywardNorth unfortunately you still do need additional devices from Tentacle to pump timecode into the cameras and it aint cheap haha. Still haven't pulled the trigger on getting 3-4 of those, but maybe sometime down the road. But the Tentacle app is really smooth to use. How solid is the Tascam one? Have you tested out the distance at which you can lose or regain connection?

Keep in mind that the Tentacle Track E has what appears to be a proprietary built in battery. While they do sell battery replacement kits at the moment, that recorder will become disposable trash, when those kits become unavailable and its battery dies. For me the standard AAA batteries are a big plus for the Tascam.

Totally worth the $80 difference between the original and Pro version. 32 bit float and the 24 hour battery life is a must!

@@WaywardNorth a white body isn't even necessary. You just need to use a white or beige lav mic cord. We've been micing the bride with Tentacle Track E's for a long time and it's a black mic pack in a thigh strap that isn't visible to anyone.

@@MastersonMedia Yes! We love using the Ursa Straps, so handy. I think having a white option would be nice for folks who have color preferences. Some filmmakers or enthusiasts like color matching their gear and it doesn’t hurt having a white one designated specifically for the bride so later on when you are dumping footage, you know that’s the brides recorder. Is it necessary? Not at all. Like you said the white mic conceals perfectly with the strap 💪

@@WaywardNorth ah gotcha. See the tentacles come with a handful of colored bands that can be swapped out on each mic. So I have a green one on the bride mic, orange on the groom, and a red one on the officiant which all match the way I color code those audio files in my editing software too. Works perfect to identify at a glance
