That is one of the things that I love about the Vulcan 900. It is a good Motorcyle for people that just do not fit on a motorcycle like the Honda rebel 250 as our riding triangle would be very tight, uncomfortable and we just would not look right. And in my opinion could be unsafe when moving your legs up or down on them.That said, I am sure some made the smaller motorcycles work and then quickly moved on. But the Vulcan 900 look and feels like a bigger bike where a responsible new or reentry rider could start on or keep it for many many years. Congrats @jbats!

Had my 07 for couple years now, its my 7th bike i believe, weighed 270 at the time 6ft, wasn't really a cruiser guy. But this thing was cherry and at a great price, so i said lemme ride it around the block , I was Hooked!, im in my 40s so not as young as i used to be so that helped my decision, that and the Mustang seat. I actually thought it wasn't going to be big enough also, but i was wrong, its perfect, I love it.

It really opened up just after the first service. That said, I love going on long rides and because of that purchased a new 2021 Harley Davidson Road King and still have it. Wish I hung onto my v900 but it may have sat most of the time. But having 2 bikes is great especially if one is being serviced. Thanks for your comment. Take care and stay safe!

I appreciate your video very much. Your situation resonates: I’m about to become a re-entry rider after 3 decades of not. I had a Kawasaki 305 in my early twenties, and it was then my only transportation for a few years. I’ve known since that I would eventually re-enter, and finally it’s happening…I just bought a ‘21 900 Classic LT, to be delivered later this week. I’m enrolled in a class the week after. All very similar to your story. I plan to have a slow-and-steady journey back into riding, but still somewhat nervous. Your video and narration helped affirm my decision and ease those nerves. Keep up the inspiration videos.

Bought a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom 8 months ago as my first bike. I can't think of a best beginner bike for an adult man. I love it. Dependable, easy to work on, super comfy and plenty of power for a new rider. Highly recommended for a new rider.
@CageFreeMoto

Great way to say it " best beginner bike for an adult man", as some were not happy that I called it a beginner bike. But if it's s too small and uncomfortable it could also be unsafe. We used the HD street 500 motorcycle in the MSF course. It was so uncomfortable and felt tiny that it was not fun to ride and at times difficult to handle due to my height (lifting legs and put them on the pegs was the worst). Was so happy to be back on the Vulcan, which was a much better fit for "an adult man" Take care and stay safe!

@@CageFreeMoto Oh how I still remember those Street 500s. I remember asking the other classmates if anyone's hip hurt. It's an uncomfortable bike if you're 5'9 or taller. Being 6 ft tall and 200 lbs, the Vulcan is perfect. Thanks to videos like yours, I decided on the 900. Its been an amazing ride so far. Thank you for creating your video. Great video and I agree, The Vulcan 900 is a great beginner bike/re-entry. The balance and fueling are spot on...very easy to ride. I think you dodges a bullet with the Vulcan S. That has the same engine as the Versys 650...which I've owned both and hated both for their awful low speed twitchy throttle response. The 2012 Vulcan 900 Classic has been my favorite bike so far and considering buying another. Ride safe, sir!

I kept a V2K for 9 and 1/2 years and replaced only a $28 clutch cable. I was ready for a lighter yet road equipped Kawasaki and bought a Voyager. Kept it two years and traded it in for a 2019 road glide. I loved the road glide, but it is air cooled and in Florida, air-cooled turned out to be a BIG problem. Stator and Voltage regulator in only 8,500 miles?! No thanks. Bought a 750 shadow and bombed around for 2 1/2 years. Then, last week, I test rode a BMW R-1800, an Indian Dark Horse Chief, a Scout and decided to forget about new bikes. I'm keeping the Honda as my road tripping days were over. Well, my wife then asked "don't you miss Sadie"? Yes, I named my V2k Sadie. I then started a search for a 2024 900 Custom and couldn't find one any closer than Pelham, GA. I found Classic LT's all over the place, but I didn't want the studs and their windshield and the smaller saddlebags. I drove 178 miles to buy a 2023 VN 900b Classic. I rode it home and fell in love just tossing my leg over the seat. It was Sadie only 250lbs lighter. I'm 71, have osteoarthritis, but refuse to stop riding. This bike is just about the best vehicle choice I've ever made. I have 9 Amazon and one E-bay parcels headed my way. to answer Cage Free's question about new riders, he put it very well: if you're a mature rider and comfortable handling a motorcycle of any cc over a 250 or so, you should sit on a 900 Kawasaki. I bought it, even though I can afford just about anything out there, because it is a super nice fit my 5' 8" frame, the finish is pretty cool, the available accessories are all over the place and reasonably priced, the price from Power Ledge in Bonita Springs at $7,499 was the clincher. Ride one, if you like it, I doubt very seriously that you'll be disappointed. makes GREAT machinery. At one third the price of the HD FLTRX, I am really happy. Shiny side up folks.

Wow! what an incredible journey you've been on with your bikes! From the V2K to the Voyager, Road Glide to the Honda Shadow, and now settling on the 2023 VN 900b Classic - it's been quite the ride. Your determination to keep riding despite challenges like osteoarthritis is truly inspiring. The VN 900b Classic sounds like the perfect fit for you, with its comfortable ride and and a GREAT price point. I've had my 2006 Vulcan 900 Classic LT for about 4 years and had a Yamaha V-Star 1100 before that for a few years. My Vulcan has been sitting in the garage for a few years so I am also re-entering the riding space. Over the last week I've been doing some top-to-bottom maintenance to get ready for a lot of Spring and Summer rides in So Cal. It's a fun bike to ride for sure! By the way, the spring preload is accessed by taking off the seat and the left side plastic covers (bonus tip: you can check your coolant level at that time also as it's behind one of the left-hand covers) Use the factory provided wrench to adjust it and you're all set. The preload settings go from 1 to 7 as I understand it and "4" is the factory default pressure setting. New subscriber here. Happy trails!

I'm a 're-entry' rider, experienced but no longer require 130-150 hp fire breathing sport machines! Your video was excellent, the Vulcan 900 is, to me, very attractive and I think a reasonable choice for someone such as myself. A beginner with little experience, yes if as you mentioned they are mature and take things slow, if not perhaps a 650 V Star or 750 Honda Shadow, which I myself have considered all the way to a 2006 Yamaha Road star 1700 (only 612 lbs & gobs of grunt). At this point in time I am leaning more to the Vulcan 900 or a Suzuki S83 1400 (S83 537 lbs & gobs of grunt). Keep up the great content!

I bought a 2008 for my wife who is 72 years old and never rode a motorcycle before. She has taken to it like a duck to water. I am 66 years old 6' 5" tall and about 280 lbs. I ride a big Victory Vision Premium Tour. I have had opportunity to ride her Vulcan and it is a sweet bike, even for someone my size and a pleasure to ride around town. It is smooth, predictable, and comfortable. It has no problem running our interstates in SD, which has an 80 mph speed limit. It is a great beginners bike in my opinion. I've only ever rode on the back of one with him but I have been around them. He told me that for my first bike to not go with anything heavy like he had. Yep, the Vulcan is a great Motorcyle. It does not look like a small motorcycle or like a starter motorcycle. And it could be a great bike for many years. You are approaching this right, research, safety classes... and when you get one, just take it slow. I started in my neighborhood with speed bumps and stop signs. After a couple weeks I went out on the streets and moved up to highways (not freeways). I did not go on the freeway until 6 months later. Don't let anyone rush your as you are the one who will pay the price if you move too fast. As they say, ride your ride. I was told they are fine to learn on like any other bike but wanted to get other views so here i am. I have little experience on motorcycles. I loved the Vulcan and my only reason to move away from it was wanting a touring frame since I wanted to go on long hours. Currently on a road trip from west coast to east coast and some days I ride up to 8 hours. I truly believe that being responsible this Vulcan is a great Motorcyle to start on. Especially since the recommended motorcycles (less than 300 cc) do not fit everyones size and an uncomfortable riding triangle may make the learning process uncomfortable, awkward and in my humble opinion unsafe. for example, riding a 500 cc for me was so small that my riding triangle was so tight foot breaking was awkward and putting feet down and back up was awkward where I was wobbly. To each their own and I wish you the best. I am sure there are week-day classes, however, the weekend are much more popular as it accommodates to a wider available market. Don't give up and be an educated rider with training. Having that real time feedback from a trainer is huge! Be safe out there!

I finally found a term that I can use, Re-Entry Rider. Thank you. Rode motorcycles in my early to late 20s, now I’m in my late 50s, and ready to ride again. I have my eye on a Vulcan 900, or, if I can afford it, an Indian Scout. Not sure which one yet.
@CageFreeMoto
@CageFreeMoto 2 жыл бұрын
I was also looking at the Indian bobber when I was getting back into riding. You can get a good Vulcan 900 for half or less than the Indian bobber (I was looking at new ones). That said, so happy I re-entered riding on the Vulcan because, of course, it is a great bike. But another benefit is I learned what I really wanted from a Motorcyle. For example bags and wanting to take road trips. So my decision on what I wanted was based on what I learned when riding again. Plus with the Vulcan I was not upside down on financing a new motorcycle so easy to make the switch! Welcome back on two wheels and being a Cage Free Moto! Stay safe out there!

Am happy i found this video:) i just got my vulcan 900 custom -13. Am a new biker. Just like you man, i had a scooter for 15 years ago. Never been on a bike since than.. 2 weeks ago i saw the vn900 custom and i been taken, its was the same feeling when i met my first love (hope she dont see this comment LOL). i decided to buy it, I got a connection with it ist very hard to explain man. Now i have it here in my garage :) i dont have a mc driving license yet but i been driven a car last 17 years and am really comfortable in traffic. I took the vulcan for a short test drive here in the town and it went smooth, i think i can handle it. I will traine on it before i take my license. I live in Sweden and to get the mc license is very pain in the as story.. They really make sure that you can drive before they give you the license, we have to do almost 5 different test, very low speed test with full turns, high speed test with hard braking, driving in the city and highway, they even make a start and drive on a uphill test witch is really hard for a new bikers.

I used to have a 900 Custom. Awesome bike. I have a Harley right now but I'm probably going back to a metric soon, I was thinking about getting one of the bigger Vulcans or Boulevards, but man idk, 1800cc's is fun and all but that 900 was one of the best bikes I've ridden. I think I got caught up in the trap of certain bikes being the "end game". Like the Vulcan was just a stepping stone to something else, but in reality it's just a motorcycle and a damn good looking (and sounding) one too. The monoshock is probably my main complaint, it'll just never be as comfy as dual shocks and my back just can't handle it, it's probably the main reason I'm looking at the bigger ones. Only reason I wouldn't suggest the Vulcan 900 for a brand spankin new rider is just because it's pretty heavy. As a reentry bike, it's probably the best lol. I do have a bit of old soul advice though that'll save you lots of headaches in the future: turn your bike off with the key, not the kill switch. Those kill switches are pretty prone to failure, but the key switch is very robust so it'll last basically forever. Also, the kick stands on these bikes are prone to failure (not that your bike will fall over, but it's more that the kill switch will randomly kill your bike when it starts failing). If you ever start getting intermittent shut downs or the bike just won't turn on, try just lifting the kick stand up a bit more. I kept a hair tie with me to hold it up and it was good to have, because I needed it haha. Thanks for the video man, it was pretty good. I liked and sub'd.

The 900 is a very good bike, agreed. As of May 2021, I picked up a Road King Standard and so far enjoying it. I do miss the 900, but I changed because I want to take longer road trips and wanted ABS, Cruise control and just a open up my riding triangle. So far I am happy with the HD. As they say, ride your own ride, well, we should ride what we want you want to ride. If it fits your needs and you are getting more smiles to the mile, then, I believe you made the right decision for you. There is not an end game, we just are fortunate to have many flavors of motorcycles to choose. Why get married to one when we can go out with many and the only thing that may hold us back is our own mind. Have fun on whatever you like and enjoy your two wheels. Be safe out there! Hi, new rider and new viewer. I am 36, 5'9 and about 180 lbs. Aside from taking a motorcycle safety training course in spring 2022, I have nearly zero riding experience. I recently inherited some money from my grandmother, and I used some of it to buy my first ever bike, a 2011 Vulcan 900 Custom Special Edition. I only got to ride it a couple times before I had to park it for the winter, but the little scoots around town I did felt great! Couldn't take it on the highway due to the front tire having some dry rot so I can't attest anything there, but for in town for a brand new rider with about 20 years driving experience in vehicles, I find the Vulcan 900 to be a good beginner bike. I really look forward to spring when I can bring her out, replace the front tire and fork seals and do an oil and coolant change and then spend all my free time riding it and hopefully quickly getting my class 6. Mine is the satin black paintjob with the red stripe up the middle and around the wheel beads and the black exhaust system. It has chrome drag handlebars and a set of black crash bars and only 6150 kms on it so pretty much brand new. I'm very fortunate to own such a nice bike and I look forward to spending many hours on it

I seen ride like a pro and learned how to ride better ! roed grooves put a 200 tire ( it just barely fit stock , but it fits )on the back it is like night and day with the road grooves ! I put front and rear pulleys ( I was very disappointed with the low gearing ) and the 200 tire ( they will not change my tires at the dealer ,modified , I bring the new tire and the wheel in then they mount it ) the real speed is 5 mph over what the speedo says and it is like one gear higher ! also put highwayman headers and bigger air cleaner and fuel management !

Good question! The difference from my past riding experience was lack of experience and training. I just got a bike and took off... my first ride I just jumped on the Freeway... no fear when you are young :) The Vulcan 900 was different because of all the good advice on KZfaq like MC Rider. Plus I took a class which really helped a lot. Also, I never felt like I had an OH NO moment with the Vulcan 900. Just used it the both breaks and was slow on my movements. But I was always concerned about some tech support like ABS. Which was one of the reasons for me shopping for another Motorcyle, just to have the ABS as a safety feature. All that said, You should be fine with the Vulcan 900, just take classes and or watch KZfaq videos and take the time to practice so you are prepared and done have an OH NO moment when you need to stops quickly. Take care and stay safe! Let me know if you get a Vulcan 900 or another Motorcyle... or if you have one... would be great to have you post a picture on the Cage Free Moto Crew page on FaceBook.

I'm technically a beginner. The last bike I had was a '78 Honda 350 back in HS about 35 years ago. I bought and over paid for a 2022 Vulcan 900. Nice bike but it's a bit heavy for a beginner. Hindsight I would have gone with a 650 in something else even if it was a crotch rocket. I'm having a stability test done on it tomorrow along with a speedometer test. Everyone is telling me I'm going 10 mph less than what my speedometer says. Plus I'm really bouncy on the freeway and there's still a lot of vibration in the handle bars when I try to take it up. I'm still trying not to get blown off the back of the bike because of the force of the wind hitting my chest. I don't feel safe going faster than 60-65 and according to the people clocking my speed that's 50-55. Just not a freeway bike which is a bit disappointing because in order to get to those beautiful back roads where I live I have to take the freeway. So I'll be letting this one go soon and searching for something that I can enjoy riding a bit more. Great video! I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Yes, I have been riding the HD Road King for nearly two years, and in April of 2023, it will mark the second anniversary. Before acquiring my Vulcan 900 Classic, I was searching for a used Vulcan 900 Classic LT. However, I found it challenging to locate one, which I believe is a testament to how much people appreciate this motorcycle model. I documented a road trip from California to Virginia Beach and back, all while riding the Road King. I mention this because I knew I wanted to embark on long road trips, which is why I sought a bigger touring model motorcycle. I even test road the Vaquero, however, that needed some work. I also knew that my next motorcycle I required ABS, traction control (which I still do not have TC), and cruise control for these extended trips. That is why I transitioned to the HD Road King. Nevertheless, the Vulcan 900 Classic LT is an excellent motorcycle for touring, as long as one is content with not having the features mentioned above. It possesses all the necessary essentials to conquer lengthy journeys, whether it be cross-country or weekend rides. The choice ultimately depends on one's preferences and intentions. To be candid, I did not realize I needed the aforementioned features until I had my Vulcan 900 for approximately eight months. It became apparent that I required a motorcycle that could satisfy my needs and perform the task at hand. My recommendation would be to purchase a used Vulcan 900 Classic LT, so that if after several months or a year, you decide you require a larger motorcycle based on your riding experience or ambitions, you may easily sell your Vulcan 900 Classic LT. I hope this information aids in your motorcycle endeavors, and I can confidently say that the Vulcan 900 Classic LT is an excellent option.

I really do love how comfortable and smooth the bike is. I wanted something that would last me, as opposed to having to keep climbing from a 250, then up like I did in my younger days.
@CageFreeMoto
@CageFreeMoto 2 жыл бұрын
Can you flat foot it? That was one of the things I really liked about this Motorcycle for me, I am 5' 10". That said, I was worried it was too big for me also, but did not want to start with a 250 or 500 and grow out of it in 3 months. I actually started by just riding in my neighborhood and not on main streets. That helped me get used the size, the shifting and stopping and turning at or less than 25 mph. Did that for about 3 to 4 weeks. Then when outside the neighborhood on short rides not very far from home. This way I get used to faster speeds, slowing down and finally smooth stops. Again at least 4 weeks, then on local back roads. It will all come to you, just hang in there and take your time. One of the best things I did was take the MSF course where a coach can watch you and call you out on things you could improve or change. Take it slow and it's ok to ride alone for the neighborhood and local streets part. Then take a friend with you where they can follow you on some backroads. Keep me updated on how it goes and the good thing is you actually have a good starter bike as I found it to be very forgiving. Keep us posted on your growth! Stay safe! Wear full gear :)

I can basically flat foot it. Sometimes coming to a stop isn't exactly smooth but I have only really ridden it once--and yes, in my neighborhood with wide, empty streets it is perfect to ride around on. I think based on your videos and comments, I'm going to give it a few more months and ride some more to get a better feel. The shifting is soooo smooth--much better than any bike i've ridden cruiser style. And even if I do look a little small, who cares, right! as long as I can handle it. We shall see. Thanks for your content!!!

One thing I did to smoothly stop is release the front break just a few feed from the stop (of course you stay on the rear brake). This small change removes the front forks from going down and coming back up when you make a stop. Hope this helps! I can make a video on it if you like.

Hi, I can tell that this bike is for you, you’ve got it in you to ride this bike because you’re determined to, as long as you feel determined, you’ll be fine. I personally own the 900cc Vulcan and I loved it too! I had several minor issues with this bike, but still, it’s an awesome riding bike! I’m 65 years old, 5’7 height, 220lbs. I stopped riding for about 10 years because of other responsibilities I had. Now I’m retired and reconsidering to purchase this same bike. Because me and this bike became as one , in time I became synchronized with it. My minor beefs with it was that I wish it was a 6 speed, my main complaint was that the engine would get extremely too 🥵 hot quickly and riding in a humid hot day and then waiting at a red light, I would feel all that heat creeping up on me regular hot days or cooler days were better. After riding for about 100 miles by butt and tail bone would feel a bit uncomfortable. But these are things that I can still deal and live with. This bike is awesome to own and ride, no doubt about it, the price, looks, style and feel is great, and this bike also holds its value too! If you ever wanted to sell it used you will be able to sell it,because it’s a very popular well made bike for the money. Anyways, good luck with your riding experiences, the more you ride it, the more you brine with it, you’ve gotta have a relationship with your bike to appreciate it more lol! , you’re still young and strong.be cool girl 😎✌️

The one I shared in the video is a Vulcan 900 Classic, which did not come with a windshield or bags when I bought it, I added bags later. The Vulcan 900 Classic LT, is nice because it comes with the windshield and bags. Good choice and your all set with wind protection and somewhere to put your stuff. Personally, I think the 900 Vulcan was a good beginner Motorcycle and although it is a 900, you will grow into it and not grow out of it as fast as a 250 or 500. Hope you take a safety course and have fun. Stay safe my friend!

Hey, is that Arabian red? If so, same as mine. I've taught several people to ride motorcycles, and I have been riding for a really long time. I got my Vulcan last March and I'm loving it (900 standard). However, I'd never use this to teach a new rider or recommend it for somebody new to motorcycling. It's extremely heavy and has extremely wide handlebars. My first parking lot on the initial test drive tested my abilities -- I was okay, but woe unto somebody who doesn't already have experience. Lots of reviewers say this is good for beginners, so maybe I'm weird. I can live with that ...
@CageFreeMoto
@CageFreeMoto 2 жыл бұрын
Na, you're not weird. I think you right that it may be heavy for green riders. That said, for bigger guys, if they are willing to take it slow... it may be a good fit since it is not a smaller bike where it is uncomfortable and awkward to ride. To each their own and I think a new for re-entryway rider needs a mentor and or just get educated to ensure they are making the safest choice for their level of experience. Plus motorcycle classes :) Not sure on the official color name, but, it looks like a very nice root beer color.

I wouldn't call it a "beginner bike". It is a great bike to start on though. Light, low center of gravity, and controllable power. It can also last you forever as it can do everything a bigger bike can do. I've been riding for 15 years and I'm thinking about buying this bike to add to my stable. Light cruisers are great bikes. I've owned cruisers with engines from 650 all the way up to 1900. I would never buy a 650 again though. Only exception being the Vulcan 650. Vulcan 650 is a special bike. Cross breed between a cruiser and sport bike.

Thank you for your comment! I agree that the Vulcan 900 Classic may not be a typical beginner bike, but it's a fantastic option for someone who has ridden in the past and wants to get back into riding, which is what I did. Its light weight, low center of gravity, and controllable power make it a versatile and reliable choice. Light cruisers are indeed great bikes, and the Vulcan 900 Classic offers the best of both worlds, much like the Vulcan 650. Thanks again for sharing your insights, Take care and ride safe!

I was very happy with the Vulcan 900 classic. I just changed as my riding requirements changed. Was planning on longer rides which includes freeway riding. And as great the Vulcan 900 classic is, it just seem like it is best around "town" and the backroads. It just felt like long freeways rides felt like I was pushing the engine. That said, that is how it is designed and can handle it, you can just feel it on handlebars and foot boards. So, my experience and maybe different for you. Let me know where you land and again, l have zero regrets restarting my riding on the Vulcan 900 classic. Stay safe out there and look forward to hearing what you end up getting.

@CageFreeMoto

The difference between the custom and the classic is the handle bars and the front wheel. The Classic has a beach bar look with a wider tire in the front where the custom has pulled back bars with a thinner almost stretched out in front look. In my opinion the custom has a club style look where the classic looks like something from the 40's. The forks back they both are identical. Hope this helps :)

I thought it was a good re-entry motorcycle for me because I am a bigger guy and I know that a 500 or less would not fit me well. Yes, I was concerned that the 900 was to large for me when getting back into riding but it was the right size and I took my time. Then I was hearing the iron 883 was a good beginner and at least in terms of engine size not to far from the 900. I think a person needs to have an educated opinion on what they need and fit on as if it is too small it may not be safe as it was for me. I took a 500 out and my riding triangle was so tight that it was not fun riding or handling the foot controls. All that said, it is up to the person who is mature enough to take it slow, take training and handle the weight of the right motorcycle that fits them. And yes, I would agree that most should not start on a 900, but if they are around 6 foot or large stature then the smaller bikes may not work for them unfortunately. Just my opinion and I am not forcing or standing on a hill shouting the Vulcan 900 is a starter motorcycle. Congrats on the Vulcan 900 LT, it was the one I was originally looking for, however, found a great deal for the Vulcan 900 classic. Take care, stay safe and really appreciate your thoughts!

I definitely don’t think that a $10,000 nearly 700 pound motorcycle is a beginner bike! It is too limited to really explore what riding is all about. My Suzuki TUx 250 is a great all around bike. It can do some easy off stuff, is great in the city, is great at playing the curves on a back road, and can even do some touring. My wife and I took a couple 1000+ mile trips on mine while my leg was healing from surgery. My Vulcan is great for what it does, tooling down the road at a moderate speed in relative comfort. But there is a lot more to riding than that. A small light weight bike allows a new rider to explore every aspect of riding, something a big heavy cruiser really can’t.
@CageFreeMoto

10k on a starter is allot $$ since you may grow out of it so fast. I got a GREAT deal soon my used Vulcan with only 4k on it and was great as a re-entry rider after decades of not riding. And a good option because a 250 was just too small for my height and my size. If totally green to riding then do your research, go sit on a few bikes and buying used is in my opinion the best way to go. I was warned by you all (comments in my videos) do not put to much money in your bike because you will grow out of it. I loved the Vulcan so much that I thought no way, this is a great long term bike (and it is) but my riding changed and was out if it in 9 months. - Should have kept it for fun You offer great advice and thanks for sharing with everyone!
