Pierre--------. But if the new owner is very happy or thrilled with his newly purchased Mercedes, and has the money, I would see that as good value. And if the car does not appreciate in value the next 5 to 10 years but the owner is thrilled, that would still be a wise purchase in my book even if the person overpaid a little. So value as I see it is a lot more than just price when we are talking about classic Mercedes.

The W111 “cabs” are a bargain now! Even at $100,000 plus, they Represent style, grace, elegance and status.

I believe the W111 cabs are still a good buy. Almost 3 times as many 300SL gull wings were made than the 280SE. The styling is timeless and the build quality is second to none.

Good buy? They can fetch up to 500.000 euro. And are very similar to the 4 door version. View trough the window is exactly the same

A W111 heckflosse video would be fantastic, especially if it's as detailed as the 300SDL/SEL videos.

I think that we are in a super strange time when our money is turning into a worthless thing!!! I have been buying cars these past two years. That way atleast I have something special to show for the money. Inflation is a real thing and owning something special is more fun than looking at a loosing bank account account ;-) thanks Bill

I have 2 W111 2 doors - a 220 SE Cabriolet and a fully loaded 280 SE 3.5 coupe. I live in Australia and both cars are right hand drive. For reference good (not concurs) examples are worth AUD 150k to AUD 190k for the 220 cabrio and AUD 180K to AUD 220k for the 3.5 coupe. Note that right hand drive versions of both are extremely rare - only 191 220 cabriolets and 245 3.5 coupes. were built to right hand drive specification with only 6 and 58 respectively being sold officially in Australia. The 220 is fine power wise until you come to a hill, which is when you do have to work it whereas the 3.5 is perfectly fine in any situation. Judging from the reaction and excitement both (especially the cabrio) seem to have with young people, I think these cars will be popular for a long time and I don’t see them depreciating any time soon. An example, an excellent 3.5 cabrio recently sold here for AUD $1.15 million. Percentage wise the real value growth seems to be with the 6 cyl. Variants, which is logical as they have the lowest base from which to climb. A shabby W111 (even sedans) is a rare site here now as they are all in the hands of enthusiasts and collectors. Options, especially on 3.5’s, has a big effect on price and so does colour. For some reason every second person, in Australia at least, seems to assume that if you have one of these cars, you must be trying to sell it! The number of enquires and regular offers I receive suggests plenty out there are interested in them. Their rarity is also a factor and I constantly get comments from younger people that have never seen one. Please do a video on any W111 2 door model - it would be very well received. Interestingly it would seem stocks here are reducing, due to collectors from the UK and Japan coming to Australia seeking these cars which, due to our climate, have much less rust and wear, with the exception of sun damage.

Call me basic, but it would be nice to see a 560SL video, although the 107 is pretty over-documented on KZfaq as it stands.

I think Robert Presser asks the right questions. As a baby boomer, the W111’s were our parents dream cars. I think much like the decline seen in Packards and Duesenburgs (our grandparents dream cars), when that generation goes away, so do their dream cars.

The question is, who is going to buy these cars in 20 years? Will the next generation of collectors want this vintage, or something more modern like a 500SEC from the 1980s or even the big S-Class convertible of a couple of years back - likely to be a collector's item since it has been discontinued. I will stick with my 280SE 4.5, not worth so much money that I am afraid to park it in a shopping center parking lot, and easier to find parts for. I can think of less expensive and equally enjoyable top-down motoring that is still investment grade with the savings.

If you compare a 111 cabriolet to its modern version, the S-Class Cabriolet which starts at around $140K, the 111 is actually not bad value proposition. Is cheaper, looks classier (it makes you like old money, not like the new obscene money that usually comes from shady business), delivers the same concept of a big comfortable convertible for 4 passengers and best of all, it won’t depreciate. So, all in all, I’d say the 111 is still a good buy.

How about a W116 car, like the 450SEL?

Being new to classic Mercedes ownership, my hope is that the car would retain its value and keep up with inflation. But I also would like to own the car until the end, meaning that I would prefer to make a purchase that is in line with the market value of the car at the time of the purchase, but if it is nicer and I overspend a little, that would be okay. I would be holding on to the vehicle. These are wonderfully crafted machines that will endure the test of time. Is there a W111 or 112 or 113 in our future? Time will tell. But I am trusting in hearing what your recommendations might be…. Nice article about changing the rear axle gears in this month’s Star Magazine!

my fear is that they are all going out of the hands of car people and into the hands of speculators and 'collectors' who never drive their cars. There are a decent number in our club but mine is the only one that ever seems to be a regular at car club events.
