Is There A Better Location For An Eldritch Ruin? Llanthony Priory

On a misty Sunday morning, we visit a partly ruined former Augustinian priory in the secluded Vale of Ewyas, in the Black Mountain region of Brecon Beacons in Monmouthshire, South East Wales.
In around 1100, Norman nobleman Walter de Lacy reputedly came upon a ruined chapel of St. David in this location and was inspired to devote himself to solitary prayer and study. He was soon joined by Ersinius, a former Chaplain to Queen Matilda, the wife of King Henry I, and then a band of followers. By 1118, a group of around 40 monks from England had founded the first priory of Canons Regular in Wales.
The Welsh were none too pleased with the arrival of these Norman and English interlopers and regularly attacked the Priory until in 1135 the monks retreated to Gloucester where they founded a secondary cell, Llanthony Secunda.
In around 1186, Hugh de Lacy- the fifth Baron, rebuilt the priory church, which was completed by 1217.

Beautiful. Kudos to the Romans' engineering prowess, their arches still stand today.

Shame you missed out the little pub underneath. It's really special with good beer, food and icecreams. So small you always end up sitting at a table with strangers so always get conversation.

I liked your take on it - I've always enjoyed a visit there. And hey if you like you can have a pint in the Half Moon. All the best. Mark

I enjoy your whimsical accounts of visits to castles & other ruins, you don't, unlike most KZfaqrs, talk endlessly about nothing. However, many of your videos are of Welsh sites &, as a Welshman, I find your abominable pronunciation really grates upon my ear, detracting greatly from my enjoyment. The effort required to get it right is minimal, perhaps ask a local for instance, you really ought to try. Many of those from the other side of the border have a flippant attitude toward the language, a comic hangover from a time long past but I'm sure that doesn't apply to you two. Btw Llanthony is in the Black Mountains & not the Brecon Beacons, also I'm fairly sure it is in Breconshire too. Otherwise keep up the good work, you're doing a great job of entertaining us.

Thank you. We were being driven to Hay-on-Rye and our friend surprised us by taking us here in 2019. Our first time in Wales and I’d not heard of the priory. Beautiful place and freezing cold - we were there in April. Wish you had been with us to explain the history - thanks for this video
