Remember Furby dolls and their gigantic eyes, Spice Girls and their gigantic hair, and Heelys...otherwise known as the “original skate shoes with wheels”? Well if you do, then you may be a ‘90s kid like me who grew up in the 2000s and at the time, highly coveted these sports shoes with wheels, and sometimes with lights that blinked and flickered. I remember when everyone in school had them and they were in every other department store. Do you? Even if you do, these days I haven’t seen Heelys on any shoe store shelf or anyone even wearing them, young or old. For a rolling shoe that razzled and dazzled so many in the 200s, what happened and where did it all go wrong? What happened to the shoes with wheels? What are the shoes with wheels called? When did shoes with wheels become popular? By the end of this video, you’ll know everything that happened behind this fad.

I recently bought adult sized Heelys shoes to relive my childhood. I still remembered how to use them, though it took a little bit to regain my balance on them before muscle memory finally set in. They still suck on concrete, but are fun for smooth surfaces. Unfortunately smooth surfaces are often indoors with little space or with authority figures walking around telling you to stop skating in their mall or college campus, what ever public/private facility where property is owned by someone to a degree. They probably fear of getting a lawsuit if I end up hurting myself, which always annoyed me because I'm not the type to make frivolous or falsifying lawsuits for making personal decisions that caused me bodily harm on the property of others, but because people like that do exist, it's hard to have fun in society anymore that's obsessed with safety it's almost oppressive.

i was born in 2003 and as a kid i got heelys, but i was using them when i wasnt supposed to and i got in trouble and got them taken away. BUT NOW I AM 18 YEARS OLD AND I GOT THE VAPOR95 HEELYS FOR CHRISTMAS, NOW NOT EVEN GOD CAN STOP ME FROM HEELYING WHEN AND WHERE I WANT TO

I missed out on Heelys in their heyday as I graduated high school in 95 and could never find any in my size. I'm now 45 years old and have just ordered my first pair. Y'all pray for me.

@@killjoix yeah it took me about 3 days of short practice sessions to be able to kick off. If I think about it too hard I still mess up. Lol 😂 I had to hold onto to things and get used to how to balance on them.

I bought a pair out of the back of popular mechanics magazine in 2000 or 2001. Wore them on vacation to OCMD that year and felt like a celebrity with all the people asking me what they were.

My aunt bought me a pair of Heelys when i was 6 years old. Back then i didnt know how to use them. I fell and fell and fell. Eventually i got it! And now that i m 24 years old. My love for heelys has not changed abit. I still buy them and i still ride them. Despite people thinking of me as a weirdo. Heelys are just fun. You have to admit.

This is actually quite useful if you're a street photographer and walks a lot. It's also helpful for panning cinematic shots without having ro buy expensive cinematic equipments. 😂

I missed out on heelys when i was in elementary school because my mom thought they were too dangerous. I always wanted a pair when I was a kid, all my friends had them and I always felt left out. Now i am 25 and I saw that they make adult sizes. I got the tommy Hilfiger hustler ones because they are stylish enough for my age that my wife lets me have them xD and i can skate around on it when I want. Very happy to have them!

I certainly remember being too poor for Heelys. Also, the one big wheel that had to be manually added or removed seemed kinda wierd. One time, at a mall kiosk, I saw a pair of similar shoes, but they had two sets of wheels spaced farther apart, and they popped out at the press of a button, so you could just have perfectly normal shoes, and skates in a moment's notice. Never seen them again, though.

I don’t know why this is in recommendation but I’ll go with it anyway the shoe you’re referring too are Heelys pop with the button on the back, I believe they stopped creating them because you couldn’t replace the wheel? Whatever the reason was it was definitely because they stopped the simplicity of the shoe it lost popularity. No one wants to manually implant a wheel in their shoe 😂 but pressing a button… umm yeah why not after the pop feature went away so did the desire for the brand people may have bought one pair after but then never bothered again.

I'm 28 now - I have 5 years of experience riding them as a kid and teen so I'm able to swap feet and go backwards and all kinds of neat stuff pretty naturally now. I just bought two new pairs a couple of weeks ago and began wearing them this spring at my community college -. My college is designed like a long-ass (almost a 1/4 mile indoors) hallway with several small limbs that stick out and all of the floor there is extremely smooth, making it the absolute perfect environment for them. Since I began wearing them a couple of weeks ago, I've gotten more compliments in general - not just about my shoes but my outfits in general; the shoes no longer look like the high-top DCs that they used to look like and now appear much more like a casual pair of Vans or Converse flats... And damn they are stylish. A couple of good standard pairs in colors like black, charcoal grey, navy, and tan go a long way in completing a wardrobe. And if you go to school or work in an environment that has a lot of walking time in flat terrain, they are a perfect utility shoe. Just don't be reckless with them or security is bound to make you take the wheels out. But even if you are forced to take the wheels out - they still look good asf and are comfortable with the wheel out. I keep my wheel wrench and shoe plugs in my fanny pack (also back in style IG - I see a lot of people wearing them at my school - I'm in Denver, CO for reference) for ease of access in such an event. For reference: I have had one run-in with the security at my school with them on. They recognized them, but ultimately said that they didn't care too much as long as I was using them wisely. Honestly, they walk the school's length all the time, and I'd almost like to imagine that they were moreso eyeballing them for their own use-case or utility... I imagine being seen flying through the halls at 20MPH would get me in some deep shit, but realistically: use them smartly and don't get complacent when riding (AND BE SURE TO SLOW DOWN AT INTERSECTIONS LMFAO it's like car traffic rules basically; people walking have the right of way at all times). And dear GOD do not experiment with anything unless you can be for sure that nobody is around that could get hurt. I'm not tryin' to see these sent to oblivion again over some dipshit not understanding what rider's liability as a concept is. Fun fact: if you get good at them, you can do the "Ripstik" motion with them to propel yourself forward (or just simply make your front foot do more travel than the back foot by wiggling it around). You'll burn out the bearings a bit quicker doing that, but you can get pretty fast doing this. Fortunately, if you bust your bearings, there are guides on how to replace them. Or you can just buy a new pair of wheels for like $15 if that doesn't matter to you too much. But a fair warning: be careful how fast you propel yourself: if you catch a small rock, you're going to eat dirt face-first pretty quickly. Same with the human factor: hitting someone coming around a corner in a hallway at top speed is gonna fuck somebody's shit up. Just be wise about it and don't hit the gas so damned hard. You're probably not wearing a helmet with these on, so keep in mind that the dangers are very real.

Yup, I remember these. Back in elementary school, they were banned because so many kids had them and kept hurting themselves and others because they would skate down the hallways and fail at stopping in enough time, lol

This is such an inspirational and amazing story! Thanks for posting this history. I always wanted Heelys as a kid but was afraid of them since they looked so dangerous. As an adult, I was so pleased to find that they have adult sizes now! I ordered a pair and absolutely love them! I heely all over the house lol. You can get them at an affordable price now and the designs are so beautiful and fun. Absolutely love them!

I loved my Heelys as a kid man I was 12 at the time and wore them at school, out to a supermarket anywhere. I think what drove me to quit wearing them was how they marketed it to "Everyone one". When I saw 6 year old little girls with full helmet and pads I grew out of the shoes and moved on to skateboarding.

Ohhh man I faintly recall having some winnie the pooh shoes as iirc a toddler or maybe idk how early or not but looking back idk why shoes lit up for if its dark out most kids are not allowed to be roaming around outside XD as anyways but yeah so as a toddler I feel like thar iirc at some point if I did have those winnie the pooh shoes then they lit up yellow or just lit up but makes me wonder how they had a place for enough room to put in a battery in em.

tbh, most sneakers are basically unisex if one ignores some unique colors anyway, it doesn’t make sense to restrict it to boys if every other brand is making the same shoe for everyone, just in different sizes. Some don’t hide that fact at all. There’s a reason Jordans will have both the men’s and the women’s size on the box.

Thanks very much. 👍👍👍👍👍 I just ordered 2 pairs of reebok x heelys for me and my daughter (50% off right now! £65 for both pairs!) and although they are cool, there seems to be 0 innovation since like 2003. Simple click out front wheels, permanent grind plates are just what I was expecting when I searched their website and I was surprised that it was just - no - wheel in the heel, same design, same function, no real improvments. A few other companies are making shoes with click out wheels that seem fun but are not as fashionable as the heelys. I think they are really missing out on huge sales. Just get a front wheel setup *somehow* or do stuff to make people wear them more, without getting Patella tendon issues from constantly pulling hard on the tibialis anterior elavting your toes/feet That's all good for kids but adults don't need potential issues like that. Why are their not mounting holes for front wheels is totally confusing me. How did they earn all that cash and refuse to change? your video summes it up nicely 👌

I had this one when i was 8 years old but we dont have the heelys brand we got many knock off or china made heelys which is cheaper, because the shoes has many style it become my daily shoe running she and everything 😂
