I agree 100% with you. Many Americans tend to reproduce their traditional cultural and racial biases to the places they settle. One example of the intrinsic way Portuguese tend to integrate is the concept of "lusófonia" who in a very simple way links all the peoples who have portuguese cultural heritage.

100% right. Europe has a TERRIBLE history of racial, etnic, religious diversity. Religious wars, ethnic wars, Holocaust, as recently as last century. What do you think they would do someone from another continent if push came to shove?

Hi! We welcome everyone that identifies as black or African decent. I have several locals who are black Portuguese and they are also thriving. It doesn’t matter if you have a job or not, the overall goal is to create community and beige the gap between expats and local black portugese. We also have several from Cape Verde, even one who owns. Restaurant here .

@helena coming from America, it gives us a sense of comfortable knowing we can meet with people who may come from a similar culture especially in a foreign country. We unfortunately carry trauma to other places but its ideally to protect ourselves. Also, our culture is unique just as others so we should be able to celebrate it and feel comfortable connecting with the diaspora wherever we go. So while I agree that it shouldn’t matter, the reality is it does, but that doesn’t mean overtime we won’t take the time to connect with others outside of our culture.

Thank you so much for the comment, and yes I 100% agree with you there is racism in Portugal. This video was not to hide the fact that there is not racism this video Its for the black community. As you already know if you lived here that many of the Africans don’t identify as black here. They identify based off of where they’re from such as Cape Verde or Mozambique or Guinea-Bissau or what ever their native country is. I have been highly educating myself about the racism here and watching documentaries such as Alcindo ( the one who was murdered on June 10th 1995 by Nazis, and several Other through out Portugal over the years) and talking to local Africans who have experience here and some of the experts too. People think the Portugal is a non-racist country. Even the Portuguese will say that they are not racist and that they were the comments out of all the colonizers. I do appreciate your comment and I really hope that someone reads your comment and I really hope that someone reads my response. Please don’t think racism here is any different than in the US.

Okay let's break this down. First of all the black folks with money - mostly the Angolans - go back and forth. So unless you are hanging out wirh them you won't see them. There are many Africans doing well in portugal but they have stronger connections to the continent African Americans don't have. Yes I have lived in portugal and have a different take on what it is like being African *and* African American in Portugal. The folks popping bottles in Luanda got their own "Luanda to Lisbon" network like Nigerians have their "London to Lagos" network....

Hi, first i have to tell you that racism is a global problem but in Portugal not só much. The public health is One of the best on the whorld, but you can have private health complementing and it costs something between 12.99 and 100€, i dont think is more than that. About guns people have permite usually for hunting. Its unusual to have guns for protection, you also Nerf a permit. Live on Portugal os in a slower passe because people work to live, dont live to work. Laws are equal for all, except rich people, but thats everywhere. Its cheaper to live because our minimum whage is One of the lowest in EU. The biggest expense will be housing, depending where you live you can pay from 600€ to 2 or 3 thousand, it also depends how high is your house. Or you can by a land or house to renewall but is quite expensive to do renewall. In general people are friendly and welcoming and if you mais an effort to speak portugues and fit in, you will be amased. Hope i ansewred your questions.

We do! We go out to local Portuguese events and celebrate with the locals too. So many people think we only do things surrounding the black diaspora. Our community is very diverse and several even have Portuguese spouses who are always welcomed and show up.

Thank you for your response. It seem the Portuguese are the only ones who have issues with this video. I’m not leaving what means the most to me behind. Having a safe BLACK community is important. A community where others who look like me can talk and reflect on things non black people cant and will never understand. I've said that we don't want here what's happening in the US, if you want to come to Portugal keep in mind that we will respect you because of who you are and not because you are white or black or whatever. We have our african brother and sisters from portuguese speaking countries such as Angola, Mozambique, Brasil just to name a few, and we want to build a portuguese speaking community based in respect. Obviously we need to fight any tipe of racism and Portugas has done an amazing path, and we can only continue to make that path if we work together regardless of your ethnicity. Furthermore, besides portuguese, we are also european which means that we must respect other european countries and cultures. This is a western european country, but we also have the easten europens, which are very, very different cultures. Just enjoy Portugal and try to keep the US issues in the US.

I am Portuguese and black, my community is any Portuguese or for that matter any person that I cross my paths with, they don't need to look like me nor I have a different care for people based on their skin color. You'll find out that in Portugal there is no segregation of people based on ethnicity, everybody goes to school together, everybody goes to work together. Keep in mind there are bad(racists, criminals or other type of bad) people everywhere, but the most important is to respect one another as just human beings. Setting of communities based on ones background is the solo root for every kind of segregation, this where all started in America. It is necessary keep American "crap" away from Europe, please consider this closely.

Yes it can be sad and true but we all have our own opinion and negative comments make me want to work harder to achieve what they think is racist. Since building this community here in lisbon , so many amazing connections between the local Portuguese and expats have happened that would probably never have happened at this rate. We have supported so many small business and bring light within the community they they exist. We need a safe space to talk about things that only black oriole can related too and understand. I never said never wanting to embrace the culture. In order to do that you have to know the locals and educate your self , just like with any community it’s needed to interact between two different communities. Hi my name is Lynnette, I get what you’re saying. Your way of thinking is futuristic and idealistic along the lines of MLKs dream of a color rich society inclusive of everyone. I got here a few days ago and I couldn’t get my phone to work. I have mobility issues and was dumped by my brother at the airport after my bags were checked in and it was clear I could only go forward alone with 4 suitcases (which he was going to carry to my new residence) down the coast to the Algarves. I had no hotel. The young woman (who spoke no English) got her supervisor who allowed this young woman to walk with me to settle in to the hotel. I am a bohemian veteran of the U.S. military. I have no friends here at all and left my husband out of fear that he would harm me in the states and because he refused to travel abroad I felt I’d be safer here. The food has been fresh and tasty but I don’t find the folks I have met to be particularly friendly. Are there groups here - particularly in the Algarvess or online that could facilitate friendships with someone like me? I am a Christian and would love to find a church in the Algarves but have no point of reference for such a place. Thank you for the inclusiveness you support for all people and thank you to this young woman for posting her perspective which though different from yours is still very much relevant. ❤️🙏🏽⛪️
