I remember when you just moved to Mexico. I moved there in May 2021. Now you're in Portugal, wow! As I write this I'm in Rome, but I'll be flying back to Portugal on Sunday the 17th. I'd been in Portugal since May 2022, mostly Porto, which is where I'll return to. But the lack of community is why I've not pursued my D7 visa. But you've inspired me. I realize I don't have a community because I've not been intentional about it. So, I'm going to rectify that upon my return. I'm already a member of your group, Black in Portugal, I just need to take action.

You can see from the comments from Portuguese people, you are already experiencing cultural clash. Portugal has a very strong integrationist culture. Any form of racial or cultural grouping is taboo here, we think it only brings trouble. I lived in the US an I understand what you're trying to do, but this is really one of the things that are different like night and day between Portuguese and US culture.

This is false. Portuguese blacks experience racism and are not treated equally. How do I know this? They tell me and I simply believe them. I agree 100% with you. Many Americans tend to reproduce their traditional cultural and racial biases to the places they settle. 100% right. Europe has a TERRIBLE history of racial, etnic, religious diversity. Religious wars, ethnic wars, Holocaust, as recently as last century. And they are gonna welcome Africans with open arms?? And I say this as a European. Russians and Ukrainians are killing each other even though they are the same race and religion and are virtually indistinguishable. What do you think they would do someone from another continent if push came to shove?

As an African (Nigerian) and American (native Washingtonian) I want to encourage brothas and sisters to get to know the old, deep and rich history of native black portuguese people from the former colonies. Think of it this way - peoppr come Africa and the West Indies all the time. Do they get they get the full scope of America not taking interest in African American culture? No! They have their own foods, own dance styles, oen music. When we say "black" we have to understand that 96% of the black people on planet earth are NOT African American and have never been to America. This should fill you will confidence that whether you are in Iceland or Iraq, Norway or Nirth Philly, you will find us.

Most of my friends in the US are Ethiopian. I have been learning Amharic and am used to cooking and eating a lot of Ethiopian food, but I haven't found any Ethiopian restaurants in Portugal. My friends have said that they are probably there, but underground. Would love any insights on this. I will really miss eating injera if it isn't there lol. Prepare yourselves to poor , mediocre services, on both the public and private sectors, lots of bureaucracy, a feeling that the country is always fearing that it might be nearing another bankruptcy, terrible drives, entitled men and women, who find it hard to accept and confront their shortcomings … I mean, I was born and raised here and there a lot of great things about this country, but I am afraid that the amount of bad things largely surpass the good ones, but good luck ✌️

From reading the comments it’s VERY clear that Portuguese people have ZERO understanding of America, American culture, the history of race relations in the US and what certain terms ACTUALLY MEAN. It’s ironic because they are so concerned about immigrants making the effort to act like them, understand them and their culture, but aren’t giving the same respect back. Instead of being open to LEARNING AND UNDERSTANDING different perspectives outside of Portugal properly, they’ve just deemed it all wrong by default because it’s not Portuguese. It’s hypocritical. But I guess many are too delusional to see it. How sad.

We unfortunately carry trauma to other places but its ideally to protect ourselves. Also, our culture is unique just as others so we should be able to celebrate it and feel comfortable connecting with the diaspora wherever we go. They identify based off of where they’re from such as Cape Verde or Mozambique or Guinea-Bissau or what ever their native country is. I have been highly educating myself about the racism here and watching documentaries such as Alcindo ( the one who was murdered on June 10th 1995 by Nazis, and several Other through out Portugal over the years) and talking to local Africans who have experience here and some of the experts too. People think the Portugal is a non-racist country. Even the Portuguese will say that they are not racist and that they were the comments out of all the colonizers. The public health is One of the best on the whorld, but you can have private health complementing and it costs something between 12.99 and 100€, i dont think is more than that. About guns people have permite usually for hunting. Its unusual to have guns for protection, you also Nerf a permit. Live on Portugal os in a slower passe because people work to live, dont live to work. Laws are equal for all, except rich people, but thats everywhere. Its cheaper to live because our minimum whage is One of the lowest in EU. The biggest expense will be housing, depending where you live you can pay from 600€ to 2 or 3 thousand, it also depends how high is your house. Or you can by a land or house to renewall but is quite expensive to do renewall. Most of my friends have african/indian ancestry in their families and I look at them for what they are; my friends. When u come from the US and start using those terms and creating a "community" ur closing ur self up just like u did in the US. Don't bring the BS that doesn't work in the US and embrace the culture in Portugal, we are not perfect and surely you will find a lot of assholes around but we are happy that you like our country and glad that you are here. That BS in the US divides people and ur still holding to those believes and now ur trying to mimic it in Portugal, that's my only issue with the message of this video. But ur free to act as u see fit, so I welcome you and wish u all the best.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Sadly many like you with this one way of thinking are what’s keeping this community thriving! So many AMAZING connections have been made with the black expat community and with the locals. Business are thriving and friendships ( of all colors) are being formed. Sadly if you are not from the US you can’t comment on what we should and shouldn’t bring and a HEALTHY, positive environment is what’s needed especially from those who are far away from home. I find it funny that many Portuguese say they don’t see color and all are welcome but are not ready to talk about the racism that currently exist and about Portugal’s major role in the Trans Atlantic Slave trade! I wish you the best of luck and maybe if you ever come across some of our events or meet ups you will have a change of heart with your above comment! Anyways, Portugal is beautiful and our community will continue to thrive ♥️

@@UnconventionalItinerary So you just confirmed what I said; ur main concern is not embracing the culture but rather come here and implement what doesn't work in the US. And you write from a place of "authority" saying that just because i'm not from the US I can't speak about american culture. But you can talk about our history, about the trans atlantic slave trade... do u see what u did there? You should pick up on some of Thomas Sowell books, he is an african-american that explains these topics in detail, try it and you might learn something. He is one of the most brilliant minds of the last decades on american history and economics but it's sad to see that so few american know that he exists. I wish u to be happy in Portugal, if u wan't to bring the US bullshit to Portugal you are free to do it, to each their own.

I never said never wanting to embrace the culture. In order to do that you have to know the locals and educate your self , just like with any community it’s needed to interact between two different communities. We can go back and forth and I know what we are building here will help introduce more expats( our community isn’t just Americans) to locals and bridge the gap and form organic relationships and some people just don’t know how to do this alone or might be shy etc, but anyways knowledge is power! I will add the suggestion to my reading list. Thank you .

@@UnconventionalItinerary you do know that Africans were selling other Africans right? ,And you included everyone in your community except for white people, do you think white Portuguese share the same experience and culture as a white Irish person, you said people of color, which means everyone but whites. So what makes you think an indian will relate to you because they are not white?, I actually think you are bringing that American ideology to Portugal. I don't think you should bond with people through trauma, and struggle

Hi my name is Lynnette, I get what you’re saying. Your way of thinking is futuristic and idealistic along the lines of MLKs dream of a color rich society inclusive of everyone. I got here a few days ago and I couldn’t get my phone to work. I have mobility issues and was dumped by my brother at the airport after my bags were checked in and it was clear I could only go forward alone with 4 suitcases (which he was going to carry to my new residence) down the coast to the Algarves. I had no hotel. The young woman (who spoke no English) got her supervisor who allowed this young woman to walk with me to settle in to the hotel. I am a bohemian veteran of the U.S. military. I have no friends here at all and left my husband out of fear that he would harm me in the states and because he refused to travel abroad I felt I’d be safer here. The food has been fresh and tasty but I don’t find the folks I have met to be particularly friendly. Are there groups here - particularly in the Algarvess or online that could facilitate friendships with someone like me? I am a Christian and would love to find a church in the Algarves but have no point of reference for such a place. Thank you for the inclusiveness you support for all people and thank you to this young woman for posting her perspective which though different from yours is still very much relevant. ❤️🙏🏽⛪️

This kind of videos are just stupid. First theres no thing as black comunity and we dont want that kind of divisions. You are not expats you are an imigrant like anyone from other country. We dont care if you are black white blue, we just want to live our lives the same way we do. We dont want any of that kind of racism that you want to bring from the US.

Hey Ricardo, thanks for watching . Although everyone’s opinion is not needed I appreciate that you took the time out of your day to comment….. but hey while we are on the topic of Racism, let’s talk about how the Portuguese viciously colonized several African countries and let’s add to the daily racism that happens here . Black people, including all the ones from the African Diaspora need a SAFE place. It’s far from racism , it’s a community that’s meant for US to thrive. Only NON black people are the only ones who seem to and constantly have an issue with this. Y’all are no different than non black people in America when we want a safe space just for us.

@@UnconventionalItinerary first i know my history much better rhen you so i dont need any lessons. Second you need a safe place like anyone else dispete of the colour of there skin. This is not USA where verything is about race. Here you have to prove you diserve respect by respecting otheres dispite the race or colour of the skin. Ww dont need people coming here trying to make more divisions that already exist. Here in Portugal all lifes mater and if you dont understand that i think you need to go back to your racist country. We dont have black people or whit people we just have people and we try to respect eche other no matter the skin colour. Of course there are racist people in Portugal and probably you are one of those. Because you dont seek to integrate but to creat divisons.

@@UnconventionalItinerary Remember that Portugal is not your country, and you have to adapt like any immigrant from different places. It doesn't matter if you're white, black, Blue, or Chinese. If one leaves the United States it is to learn something new. The best way is to mix with the people from there instead of making groups only of blacks or whites.

Welcome to Portugal! But it's important to note that Portugal is not a race obsessed country. Portugal is your "safe space" now. Wokeism is as unsavoury as magaism and only creates divisions. So welcome, but please leave toxic American race politics behind. And most importantly, buy yourselves a Portugal national team football jersey and wear it proud. You'll fit right in.
