Stephen Clark AND Stephen Taylor join forces to answer the question of “Is there a difference between burying and bouncing a bass drum beater?” A lot of factors can play into this discussion, so we do our best to cover them and demystify the topic of bass drum playing style. What are some pros and cons of burying vs bouncing, and which actually sounds the best? Which do engineers prefer? Should we muffle our bass drum or leave it open? We talk about all of these things, and we finish the video by listening to specific examples of BURIED vs BOUNCED beater-playing.
Make sure you catch the first video in our 4-video series from this past Tuesday, where we compare and test over a dozen Zildjian ride cymbals!

You know what I found most interesting about this video? Listening to the GoPro audio! Hearing all the squeaks and rattles of bass drum pedal, and the sympathetic ringing from the toms. Sounds just like when I practice at home! Because everything is always mic'd in these videos and the audio is nice and clean, it's often frustrating that when I practice it doesn't sounds very good. I don't have the equipment to practice using mics through a mixer, so it's reassuring that if/when I do play live it'll sound ok and no one will hear all the other garbage that's going on underneath. Great stuff as always. You guys are the only drum channels I subscribe to and I don't see any reason for that to change!

I was taught not to bury the beater, partially because of the sound, but also as a way to keep my feet as relaxed as possible. For years, I ignored my instructor's advice and buried the beater, but as a heal up player definitely found it felt better to finally unlearn this habit. Like Stephen Taylor, I now leave about a 1/2 inch of space after each hit, and it feels way better.

Great vid! Follow both channels and great points on the kick, personally I use a double pedal for my style, that being said I love how you guys play for the grooves you work through, similar but very different, really dig it you teamed up for this series, maybe we can see more in the future!! David

Great video guys!! I was taught to bury the beater, so it became hard do reeducate myself on this. As I started to use double bass pedal, the rebound became very important to achieve speed.

The difference was less pronounced with Stephen#1 because he buried the beater whilst playing heel down, which is quite uncommon. Stephen#2 buried the beater heel up, leaning into the head a little which creates a more muffled staccato sound. This is a better representation of the typical real world difference between a beater off and beater in note. The beater off one is longer and, depending on your tuning can have a little sub frequencies resonance after the note, which can be cool. Beater in is more compact and choked, in a good powerful way. Beater off is open, beater in is closed. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I usually much prefer beater of for slower music. Beater in can be cool for tight, funky stuff slow to fast. There's exceptions to each of these. Of course, when your kick has no port hole and little internal damping, trying to play beater in will usually both feel and sound like crap.

Huge difference, imo I've always played off the bass drum for a since tone.. But playing with loud bands frequently, I'll bury the beater to cut through the volume of the band.. Bonham, Elvin, Nate Smith, Dennis all bury the beater, as do most drummers.. Ive been making it a point to be able to do both

Question. Which beater would be best for using on a remo silent stroke bass drum head? Allot of bounce.
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 5 жыл бұрын
I would just use a regular beater. Those practice mesh heads have a ton of bounce no matter what beater you use. Might look at adjusting your spring tension (looser) to accomodate the extra bounce back

hey @Stephen Clark I have a question for you...Should you learn and play Cover music just like it is written? Taking into account that you musically are capable of playing it note for note ...should you? I play for cover bands and i go out to watch other coverbands play the same music that i do. However i don't see many, if not at all, drummers who really pay attention to all the grooves,ghosting, accents within the groove, fills, but sometimes hit stops. Would playing the song note for note like the album, regardless if you think its fun or your opinion on what is good music, Make the band sound better to the audience. OR would a 50% improv/50% play the song, make the band sound better?

Mike Drums I've been asking this my whole life, because I can't stand people who criticize certain drummers for not playing like the recording. I think it all depends on the genre of music and where you are playing at. I play in a Mexican banda and all we do is covers. I think if for the most part I nail the feel of the song I can inject my own things. I think you have to be able to play most of the song how it was recorded (but not every single note) and inject some of your own style because in a live setting the vibes are different. For us people mainly hire us to dance and hear the lyrics so I can play different things without anyone other than the musicians notice. Dope question though would like to hear their take on it.

@@TAROLEANDO ask yourself this question.... If you nailed the cover songs 99% and the feel.... Would that make the band sound better to the audience?
@TAROLEANDO
@TAROLEANDO 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Drums I don't think it would make it sound any better to the audience that I play for because they wouldn't be able to know the difference. That's why I think it depends on the genre and sometimes it may be even song specific. Live music should be based more on feel and getting a certain vibe across. Now if you are a "Beatles" cover band or a specific cover band than that's different because the audience expects certain parts of that song. There are musicians that play covers that at times when they inject their own style to piece it sounds as good or better than the recording as well.
@CDMAHTCDESIRE
@CDMAHTCDESIRE 5 жыл бұрын
@@TAROLEANDO so your saying you don't have to learn the music as it is because the audience can't tell the difference... That's a bad reason to justify you not learning a part... (if musically you can play it) you really need to check your motivations... If the rest of jobs were like that... Imagine what type of service you can expect.... You go to a restaurant.. Ask for a steak... They give you soybean steak... Where do you get that what you play is better then the recording.?..that can be subjective... However.. Stop believing the audience is ignorant and really learn and execute the parts.. People will recognize and applause you for it...
@TAROLEANDO
@TAROLEANDO 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Drums wow, I'm not saying the audience is ignorant. What I'm saying is the majority of people that hire our type of music will focus more on the feel and the lyrics and will not focus on the other individual parts as much. Also I have been gigging for almost 18 years in this genre and have never lost work because I didn't play every song like the recording. I focused more on other important aspects of drumming like having solid timing, having a good ear and complimenting the song etc. Like I said it's all in the genre, the bands I play for are 14-17 member brass bands and the importance is in the feel and people dancing. I inject my own feel into the songs because I prefer it, and not because I'm slacking. Besides I can't even give you a number on how many covers we do and have done with other bands but it's a lot! So it's more of just charting it out and knowing the intros, bridges, outros and nailing the feel. What genre do you play, maybe it's more important in the style that you play.

Seems to me the lighter and more melodic your bass drum is and is needed for the music (ie jazz), the better it is to bounce. If you want dead power (ie hard rock and metal), burying it seems like the best option.

Man could you "don't bury the beater" peeps do me a HUGE a favor? I have yet to find ANYBODY on KZfaq demonstrate the bouncing technique while doing medium fast to fast syncopated doubles and singles type bass drum patterns...could you do that for us please? You actually did playing some stuff like that but only during the burying examples.

I would say you have set your pedal wrong, at rest my beaterangle is about 60-70 ° and the pedal goes down so far as possible.I play heel up and heel down.When the foot is at rest then the beater is about 8-10cm from the head.22" bass.

I have always been taught to NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE bury the beater. My Kicks are always open and resonant too, and you get such a better sound if you actually let the drum resonate. The only time it doesn't change the sound is when your drum is dead, with a port hole, and filled with tons of crap. 95 percent of drummers I come across in the wild though do bury it. I don't understand. IT sounds so much worse, and the lower undertones help support the band when the drum actually resonates.
