Trip 4 2 Australia

Күн бұрын

On this weeks episode we travel to the former township of Mary Kathleen and set up a base to explore supposedly Australia’s biggest Ghost Town. Mary Kathleen was once a uranium mine operated by Rio Tinto here in Queensland, today it is a private property that is open to the public for camping amongst the beautiful trees and mountains that surround you.
We explore the former township and mine site before day tripping into Mount Isa and going on the Hard Times Mine Tour. The Hard Times mine was built for the tourist industry to give people an idea of what life underground is all about. The mine is named after John Campbell Miles’s horse “HARD TIMES”. John discovered the lead deposit at Mount Isa which has been in mined for over 100 years. The zinc-lead vein at Mount Isa is the richest known in the world.
So go and get yourself a cold drink and come and us for the adventure.

We love Mary Kathleen. We really love the Ballara mining trail across the highway from Mary Kathleen. We did the mine tour with our teenage boys and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you both for the look around Mary K,we will be there in🎉the first half of next year hopefully. We will be starting our travels around Australia in September and we are curious as to what precautions you take when you leave your van unattended in free camps and places like that.Keep up the good work and safe travels.Thank you in advance for any advice you can give us.👍

Thank you mate, when we first started travelling we done short trips away from the van until we felt comfortable leaving it longer. We always sus out the area we are staying in, talk to the neighbours if they are nearby, we use a Kovic Alarmed Hitch Lock that we bought at Supercheap for about $200, I also run a Kovic security cable through two wheels and lock it with a heavy duty padlock. we make sure all windows, doors, hatches etc are locked and pack everything away before heading out for the day. Most crimes that we’ve heard of have been opportunistic because people have either left things out or unlocked. To date we really haven’t had any problems or felt uncomfortable leaving our van for the day. Hope this helps Steve

Thank you, the stubbie holder is from a few we had made for the channel, they weren’t the best quality so we never went any further with them. We might revisit them one day.
