I’m not sure what he expected them to do, to be honest. The supporting beams were rotten. I dislike when experienced people complain, but are unable to offer a reasonable alternative. I really applaud their effort to preserve this building. It cost them a lot more money and time to try and preserve what they could.

That building would have collapsed, problem with the UK is many planning agent don’t understand the fine balance between modernisation and preservation. If you make it so hard to modernise a property to an eco-efficiency with new standards of living the properties will wither away. It’s like hobbit standards!

Not sure why this is controversial. Buildings, whether Listed or non-designated heritage assets, can't be preserved in aspic. This looks to me like a pretty sympathetic conversion.

Must we adhere to this ridiculous proposition that simply because something has been old and broken for such a long time, we can no longer fix it? A building ages, breaks down, needs repairs - do you really think when this was a working mill, if a beam started to rot, they would get worried about how 'authentic' it would look after? They have done the correct thing, treated the building with the respect to take out and replace what was broken, reuse and adapt what could be reused and breathe new life into it.

As someone who has done shed loads of Oak beam restoration. It was very possible to save the beams and structure (on a quick look) but the cost in time would be very far past the budget.

And even if it’s actually possible, if nobody who can afford to restore the original wood wants to take it on, then I’d say it’s better that someone who is at least able to save the rest of the building does so. Or it will just fall down. They were pretty sympathetic to the character of the place. And they even used the old timber in other parts of the building. It’s basically recycling.

Well, at least they’re not going to have a baby in the middle of the build. It’s a beautiful restoration in my opinion. I’m a little older than them, so my only negative would be climbing the stairs up to their top floor bedroom. In my rebuild I made all stairs with 5” risers.

Admire them for being original, until they collapse. Then whinge and moan that the building wasn't saved.

People have always built, re-built, and altered buildings.All within a budget THEY can afford.

Kevin McCloud is so pretentious and judgemental on this show now, if he doesn't like something then he can be so rude. What does he expect them to do in this situation? The floors are rotten and if they're not replaced then the building will eventually collapse.

It wouldn't have been given a certificate of occupancy with those rotten beams. So it would have stayed empty and rotting away until it fell down and they could haul off the stone to make accent walls in holiday lets.

I was thinking during the video what a pretentious prick this Kevin is. Glad someone else said it. I like what they did with the mill. In the end of the day it has to function as a house not a museum. Plenty of respect for the old house.

What conservatists do is scissor/join newer pieces only where the old beams are rotted. It’s 5x more work and very expensive. Not worth it in this case IMO (apart from the fact these owners were on a budget) as the building had to be insulated anyway (covering up most of the timber framing).
