Is This It?! Summer Comes To Our 200 Year Old Cottage On The Isle of Skye - Ep77

Living The Skye Life

Күн бұрын

Willie, Sarah and their dogs Jack Spaniels & new puppy, Nori, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifers are experiencing a brutally cold "summer" on the Isle of Skye. There are clouds, rain, hailstorms and even snow on the mountains during this unseasonably cold June.
Willl our fledgling cottage garden survive the cold snap and will we have enough firewood to see us through the summer..?!
Sarah is hoping that her summery hedgerow foraging trip will bring the sunshine back, as we make elderflower cordial in the cottage kitchen.
Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!
Sarah, Willie, Jack & Nori xx
Elderflower Cordial Recipe:
(makes 3 litres)
1.5L water
2.5kg sugar (caster or granulated)
75g citric acid crystals
2 large unwaxed lemons (juiced)
20 elderflower heads
1. Strip any stalks from the elderflowers to avoid any bitter flavours
2. Bring water to the boil
3. Add sugar and stir until completely dissolved
4. Bring sugar water back to the boil
5. Add citric acid crystals, lemon juice & rinds and elderflowers to the sugar water
6. Cover with a lid & remove pan from heat
7. Strain the syrup after 24 hours using a muslin or linen cloth (do not squeeze the cloth or your syrup will be cloudy)

Hi, we've just had my dream holiday on Islay, Mull and Skye. It was all as wonderful as I expected but the weather was worst on Skye! So much rain, heavy, sideways, torrential! But despite that it was a joy to be there when we could see the stunning mountains and gorgeous Glen's. The bonus of the weather was the stunning waterfalls! Thank you for your lovely videos, we always enjoy seeing where you've been and what you and the pups have been up to! 😊

When I was a little kid, Dad (and his brothers) added a fireplace to the corner of the living room. All brick, very well done, looks like it came with the house. For the winters, we would add a wood stove to the front of it, which would heat that whole floor of the house. I think we went through three or four wood stoves over the decades, and they were very heavy. Every fall we'd have to uncover it in the garage and roll it up the driveway on nothing but a hand truck. Every spring, we'd have to take it back. After I moved out, I was bribed with dinner every spring and fall, and guess what the catch was. We never had to buy firewood because we have a 40-acre farm in the countryside, of which 38 acres are wooded. Dad and I worked those woods every summer, cutting down trees, splitting the trunks, and chopping up firewood to burn after it cured for 2-3 years. This continued until a few years ago, when Dad finally decided he had enough of chopping wood and bought gas logs for the fireplace, which use the natural gas the furnace, stove, and water heater run on. I don't blame him. After all, he was 84 at the time.

Elder is easy to propogate. Take some cuttings, pot up in some moist good potting mix (I tend to scrape the bark a bit down to the cambium layer, and a bit of rooting hormone just to be sure), put back in a well shady place for at least a month, keeping the soil damp, then harden off and plant out.

❤I love your planters. The transplanted seedlings will survive a bit better if they are hardened off and have some time outside before being moved out of their pot and into the planter. Having some time to get exposure to the full sun and wind helps them develop stronger stems and they have an easier time surviving transplant shock. I usually start by moving them outside in the late afternoon and gradually increasing the time outdoors to a full day, then leave them outside after that for a few days before transplanting. And you may know that already, but gardening can be a steep learning curve, and it never hurts to share a tip if you know one.

Just when you thought the weather was lousy, now you've been inflicted with a Keir Starmer!! Poor buggers! A tip for Willie, when he is splitting those blocks with the knots in them. Once the axe is stuck in the block, turn it upside down and swing it so that the axe head hits the block. I've split tons of pine blocks bigger than the ones he is splitting and found that to work the best. If that is pine that you are burning, make sure you clean your chimney on a regular basis.

Your fire looked so cosy. The weather is awful at the moment here in Norfolk lots of rain and thunderstorms 😳 😺 X

We have excess heat here in Romania and most of the country is under Code Red for heat. Watching this episode a little late - Saturday 13th July. It's been between 30 and 37C every day since mid June with very little rain, only a couple of heavy but short lived thunderstorms. My weather app shows temperatures in the 30s for the next two weeks with perhaps a couple of days of thunderstorms in the latter half of next week.

You are not alone about the weather. Cold and wet in Denmark too. 😟❤️

Fun video! Love the Father Ted reference "Down with that sort of thing!" 🤣I Hope the weather improves for you soon, it's been pretty grim here in Yorkshire too ⛈😁💖x

We have been having a weird weather summer here in Portland, Oregon, too. June was colder than usual. On queue, July 4th hit and now we are scorching hot!

Hi Willie. Hi Sarah. We feel your pain , over here on Raasay . We've had the stove lit 3 times in the last 10 days! 😅 Tony's just out, closing the greenhouses as it was slightly warmer today, so the veggies had a bit of fresh air and warmth. Good luck with your growing. Maybe one day soon we'll get a bit of summer ⛱️. Keep warm, as dry as you can, and safe 😊

Did you happen to notice the really cool beat in the video of you opening and closing the gate? I’m sure Willie can make a song out of that. I wish I were there. We are in a heat wave and it was 116 today. And this will continue for at least another week. A fire in June. Crazy! Have a great week.

Hello again to my two favourite KZfaqrs ☺. Willie you need a log chopping maul, they work a treat for splitting logs. Lovely vlog as always. Memories of Cape Wrath in a tent in gale force 90 mile an hour winds and rain, in July in the 80s. The couple in the tent next to us even pulled their Harley D inside the tent with them it was so bad 😂. Sending love, light and Summer (?) blessings 🐝🌻🌹🐞🐾🐾 xx

Happy Sunday everyone. So good to see my favorite couple and their dogs Nori and Jack each week. Enjoyed the video. Have you ever made Elderflower Champagne? It lovely and refreshing after a hard days work. Loved watching you try to chop those branched logs Willie, the one that came off with the lovely hole in it would make a good front for a natural nest box.

Willie used to make champagne from elderflowers, but you have to keep venting the bottles regularly or they will explode 🤣 So we just add it to Prosecco instead 👍
