Honestly, I think I could watch James Douma talk about anything for about 50 hours. He is remarkable. And every now and then he slips things in, he's very classically educated. I get the feeling he's very well read and not just highly technical. Somehow, maybe on his own, he has a good liberal arts underpinning.@@737smartin

I think it is interesting that the FSD team mentioned using diffusion models to predict the future and compare to real life. I wonder if they'll eventually use GANs as the control algorithm. They'd essentially have a one to many gan relationship where some were controlling the other egos and one controlling the car ego. The bad gans could try and cause FSD to crash while the good gan tries to get to it's destination on time. All they need is infinite compute! lol.

Thanks Dave. Very useful insights from you and James. Perhaps a minor point / question. I get that the NN works out by itself what it needs to do at a stop sign. I wonder what happens when different rules apply in different places. For example, in the USA you can turn on red unless it explicitly states that you are not permitted. However, in New York City you can’t turn on red unless it specifically states that you can. In Europe you can’t typically turn on red. I wonder how the NN will work this out or is this the place for some heuristics ?
@Maxfisg22
@Maxfisg22 11 ай бұрын
Thanks Dave for the interview as always. As exciting as the V12 demo from Elon was, what is not being considered is the downsides to the removal of basic heuristics. "Never run over people" as an example heuristic in this regard is a very interesting one to think about. Certainly there are extreme situations where "never run over people" should also be violated e.g: Run over 1 person instead of a group of people when the car has no other choice. One could argue that if we are training based on good human behavior in every situation, then good human driving actions will always guide us towards the better action to take in every scenario. However there are situations where the solution to the next control action is not so obvious even for humans. As we march towards increasing 9s of reliability, the sample size of errors become smaller, less examples, less data, harder/longer to train for said situations. How does Tesla prevent regressions happening to other driving cases that were working just fine while trying to solve for increasingly harder scenarios. With heuristics, they become guardrails or hard limiters if you will to prevent regressions, without them, I'm not so certain. The demo drive for V12 was indicative of this problem. After viewing that video carefully, I believe that FSD erroneously thought the left turn signal was the relevant light for it to follow and thats why it stopped before going into the intersection (not because human drivers stay out of intersections under heavy traffic conditions) and thats why it started to accelerate when the left most light turned green. Now as mentioned by many others, this is assumed to be "easily" fixable by providing lots of intersections with left turn signals. Sure but the question is what is the possibility of said training undoing the work for all intersections without a specific left turn light. This is just an example of my line of thought where finding best fit for increasingly edge case scenarios has exponentially increasing odds on introducing regressions to the rest of the system. Another way to think about this is its much easier to update a function that satisfies 5 constraints to satisfy a 6th constraint without breaking any of the other 5. But as you increase in the number of constraints (driving edge cases) it becomes harder and harder to find the best fit function for increasing number of constraints WITHOUT breaking (regressions) the previous ones. With heuristics, its easier to setup guardrails to prevent major major regressions going out to public. Without them, its much harder. I would have loved to engage James on this topic. Again thanks to both of you for the value you provide to the community.
@gnargnargnar
@gnargnargnar 11 ай бұрын
Here's the thing though.... if none of the training data features people getting run over... the car doesn't do it. I think you're equivocating "heuristic code" with "heuristics.." The latter are still effectively encoded in the model because it's trained on only examples of good human drivers. The former is a means to achieve the latter.

Many intriguing nuggets in here, much to think about, and I'm still so undecided! Thank you Dave and James, very illuminating. I'm excited to see what emerges over the coming six to twelve months. I would suggest one caveat however - the robotaxi may not be the panacea people think it is. For every journey, there will be an empty car going to the next pick up, especially at peak times when traffic is mostly one-way. And as the convenience of self-driving increases, so a new equilibrium of inconvenience will be established thanks to people using their time to work (or relax!) in the traffic - and possibly more child trips. The more fundamental problem of car-dependent city planning will remain, although I guess overnight trips in sleeper cars will hit airlines and motels hard.
