You guys doing literature will do great! I remember when I did my mock lit paper in December I got a grade 3. It was devastating. I tried my best and for the March mocks I got a grade 4. I passed but I was still in despair due to the amount of work I was putting in since the December mock. Then for my actual lit gcse, I got a 7! I was so so so happy. I understand you guys when you try your best but get terrible grades. I was literally there, I felt and experienced the same as you guys currently are. I know the amount of thought, stress and the word ‘fail’ goes into your minds after gcses. I know how you want to enjoy your summer, but the thought of results day and failure races through your mind. Just remember, you’ll do great, the amount of work you’ve put in will show. It’s cliché but you’ll do great, I know you will!

Hi Mr Salles! This is my first time using your channel and I do not regret it a single bit!!! I am currently in year 10, and I have begun my GCSE course in English Literature. I had just covered An Inspector Calls in English, and was going to have an assessment. It was 1 day before the exam, and I had completely forgot that I would have an English test the next day. I watched this video, dedicated 3 hours to making all the notes I could from this video, and memorising them. When it came to the test, my English teacher was absolutely impressed as I had attained 30/30 marks!!!! I was in complete shock, as I would usually get between 18-21, but this time I smashed it and got full marks!!! And I was the only person in my year group at school to achieve this!!! Thank you so much for this video and I am enlightened by what you have provided me, I am confident that I can get grade 9 in my English Literature exam next year! I hope your channel grows, and to answer your question, yes this is the best of the best inspector calls video ever!!!

hi sir, could you let me know how many marks this would get . Your videos have really inspired me to work hard with English!! How does Priestley explore responsibility in An Inspector Calls? Write about: • the ideas about responsibility in An Inspector Calls • how Priestley presents these ideas by the ways he writes. [30 marks] AO4 [4 marks] In the play an inspector calls, Priestley explores the theme of social responsibility, highlighting a difference between the attitudes between the older generation and the younger generation. Priestley uses the character of Mr. Birling- a microcosm of capitalism- to criticise the selfish attitudes of the upper class, older generation illustrating the ways that they value social responsibility. Initially, in the opening stage directions, the Birlings are described to be ‘very pleased with themselves.’ Structurally, this was intentional as it gives an immediate impression to the audience that the Birlings are of a family from the upper class. This would be intimidating to anyone of a lower social standing- hinting that they have the same uncaring attitudes like any other upper class citizen. This is further reinforced as Mr Birling proceeds to make long speeches about capitalism. The exploitation of the working class works in favour of the upper class- resulting in the lack of responsibility for others in society. Mr Birling says in his talks about capitalism, ‘ a man has to make his own way- has to look after himself.’ The use of the singular pronoun indicates how a capitalist's beliefs are all about what benefits them the most. However, he follows this with ‘- and his family too, of course.’ The use of the dash illustrates his uncaring nature. Mr. Birling refuses to take responsibility for society as a whole, including his loved ones. He initially forgot about them, illustrating his selfishness as he doesn’t even remember to take responsibility for the people who he supposedly cares about the most, as well as the ‘ million and millions of Eva smiths.’ Following this, he refuses to take responsibility as the play progresses. He attempts to solve the death of Eva Smith by offering ‘unhappily’ to ‘give thousands- yes thousands.’ Though it may seem that he is distraught about Eva's death- Mr Birlings’ selfish capitalist nature wont allow him to feel sympathy about the death of the working class. This is a clear attempt of Mr Birling attempting to save his reputation. His lack of responsibility is illustrated by the use of the stage directions ’unhappily.’ He is aware that the only way to salvage his reputation is by giving money. Though he may think that this will truly save him, he is still unhappy to let go of the money he holds so dear to him. This is ironic as his unwillingness to give Eva Smith a few more shillings is what started the chain of events for Eva’s death. He believes the inspector to be a man who would take bribes, rather than forcing the Birlings to take social responsibility. However, the Inspector is an antithesis to the ideology of capitalism. Demonstrated as he interrupts Mr Birlings' talks about capitalism with a ‘sharp ring of the doorbell.’ The premodifier ‘sharp’ indicates that the Inspector has a defining role in this play as he makes a ‘sharp’ impact on many lives. This foreshadows his involvement in the play, as he shows the characters what role they had in Eva’s death. However, despite the Inspectors efforts, the nature of a true capitalist wouldn’t allow them to change. This is indicated by Mr Birlings attempt to bribe the Inspector in hopes of not accepting responsibility to save his reputation. Priestley purposefully had portrayed Mr Birling to be a man who is unchanged throughout the play to highlight the issues within society. Like Mr Birling, there are many other capitalists who have the same uncaring ideologies. In 1945, the time the play was performed, the general election would have been happening. The audience could learn that all upper class men are the same and unwilling to change. They can now take this knowledge and vote for a political party which doesn’t reinforce capitalism- taking on responsibility for all of society, as we are ‘ all members of one body.’ Although Mr Birling is presented in a negative way, Eric, who initially aligns with the capitalist beliefs, is part of the ‘more impressionable’ younger generation. The audience would expect him to be a changing character, who values the lesson of responsibility. However, as much as he appears to change, it could be believed that he hasn’t truly changed yet. In the beginning of the play, Eric is described to be ‘half shy, half assertive.’ The repetition of the word ‘half’ indicates that he is a character who isn’t fully formed yet- he is open to change. This may foreshadow the influence the inspector has on him as he changes from a capitalist to becoming a socialist. Additionally, his involvement with the inspector is further reinforced, as he seems as though he is a secluded family member. The Birlings are all presented to be capitalists, illustrated by the description of their home being a ‘large.. Suburban house.’ However, Eric seems as though he is unlike the rest of his family as he ‘checks himself’ when speaking to his father and soon to be brother in law. This indicates his discomfort amongst them, perhaps because he is opposed to the ideologies that they so strongly believe in. His ability to understand the consequences of his actions, indicates that he is a character who learns to take responsibility. While speaking about Eva’s death, he says ‘i don't even remember, that's the hellish thing.’ The adjective ‘hellish’ suggests he takes responsibility, almost foreshadowing the Inspectors last speech as he is almost predicting that he will suffer in ‘fire blood and anguish.’ However, although it is clear that he is accepting responsibility so far, Eric may not be a character who truly accepts his part in the death as he attempts to deflect the blame of himself. He claims to be ‘in that state where a chap easily turns nasty.’ This phrase clearly indicates that he is not blaming himself, he is blaming the alcohol which led to his actions. The use of the noun ‘chap’ has friendly connotations- almost as if he believes that even if he did do something so horrible, it wouldn’t matter because , after all, he is still a good person. Using third person, also distances himself from the implied rape of Eva Smith, illustrating him to be a character who is choosing to not take responsibility. Furthermore, the determiner ‘that’ highlights how the people around him are aware of what ‘that’ state is as it is so normalised in society. Although the exploitation of the working class is demonstrated in this play, the exploitation of women is also a relevant issue, in which Priestley equally explores. Eric may be taking responsibility here, however, he feels as though because the patriarchy is so normalised, he shouldn't be fully accepting of the responsibility. This is normal in society as the exploitation of women was so normalised- illustrated by both the characters Gerald and Mr birling in this play. This play acts as a message to the audience that society must remove the patriarchal system as it leads to much worse consequences than initially thought of. Though patriarchy may not be viewed as a relevant issue, it was one of the causes of Eva’s death- which should be acknowledged and acted upon. The play was set in 1912, the beginning of the suffragette movement, and performed in 1945, where women had now worked more than ever due to men being off to war. This is a play empowering women, giving the message to the audience that all the upper class men are the same- they will exploit women, which society has been conditioned to view as normal now. Though Eric has recognised that ‘ we all did her in alright,’ he is less caring to his part in her death as the deep rooted patriarchy has been so normalised.
