Is leaving Sydney Harbour the BEST cruise sail away ever? Join myself and my friend Don as we head to the White Bay Cruiser terminal in Sydney to board our 12 day New Zealand cruise on the Holland America Line MS Noordam. Are there any better sail aways than this with views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bride and the Sydney Opera House. It's that cruise life at its best! Enjoy!
Part of this trip to Australia and New Zealand was paid for by Holland America Line.

Tony the first time I sailed under the harbour bridge I was 11 years old way back in 1961 when my family immigrated to Australia from England as £10 poms. We all raced out of the dining room leaving breakfast on our tables to look up in amazement. That feeling has never left me I still get goosebumps looking at Sydney harbour,

awesome! I've been under it on ferries many times, it is something special isn't it! I'm curious though, where did your ship dock back then? I thought the docking locations on the west of the bridge were new & back then everything docked at circular quay, never realised there were docking points on the west in years gone by, really curious where they were & why I haven't heard of them
@lindagaga72
@lindagaga72 Жыл бұрын
@@mehere8038 To be honest as an 11 year old I can't remember . I just remember we got on buses that took us to our imigrant hostel. I do remember our ship The Orion hit the dock lol making sure they knew we were there. I 5hink it may have been over near Darling harbour. They have plaques up on a wall there that say the so and so family landed here and the date they arrived. You can pay and have a plaque with your family details on it put on the wall. So pretty sure it was there.

@@lindagaga72 ah ok, interesting & I guess, given you were just being bused off to another location, it didn't really matter about being centrally located to the city or anything. I think that was an industrial area back then wasn't it? Pretty sure they had lots of chemicals & stuff they had to clean up when they wanted to make Darling Harbour into the people friendly area it is today. I didn't think passenger ships would have been going into an area like that, but I don't think they treated the "10 pound poms" very well did they! Was only marginally about slavery or convict transportation in the way you were treated from what I've heard, so I guess they didn't really care where they landed you. Do you know if there were any higher paying passengers on board though? Seems weird they would have landed them in a location like that & what/who did they put on those ships for the journey back to England? I doubt you know, given your age at the time, but may as well ask in case, cause this is really interesting to learn about. I have a neighbour who was a "10 pound pom" & I learnt quite a bit about it from him after having my interest stoked watching the movie about the Easy Beets (who went through that system & movie showed where they initially lived etc. I had no idea on any of it before that)

You had a great sail away, Sydney Harbour turned on a great day for you. 5 ⭐️ My late husband used to call them diamond day afternoons on the harbour. We lived in an apartment just on the immediate western side of the bridge at Walsh Bay, where the finger wharves stick out. Some of us Sydney people take it for granted until we travel the world 🌎 then realise what we have is absolutely magical. ❤️❤️❤️🇦🇺

Yes it is! I am sailing with Royal Caribbean every year but they usually dock at Circular Quay and start sailing around sunset. The scenery of the harbour basking in sunset glow during sail off just as I enjoying my dinner, is the best ever. Very few, if any, can top that. edit: in fact, I am sailing on 24th January (a couple of weeks from now) to NZ for 11 nights! So excited. edit 2: a couple of tips just in case if you were sailing with RCI in the future. There is usually a sail off party on top deck with bar open and music, and people cheering and waving to the city. It's nice. I myself prefer to go to Windjammer for dinner, chose the best seat outdoor with the view. Most people will go to main dining because there is usually a welcome greeting thing from ship captain, but I have been in that for so many times I choose to skip. Still it's entirely up to you.
