Every time I watch Charles's videos I think, man he can't get any better than last time, he's already at the highest level, and yet - he always pushes it beyond that. I can only imagine how much time it takes him to learn, practice, and record all of this. The guy deserves millions of views every time. You have my utmost respect!

If you learned giant steps note-for-note from a sheet music transcription, you would be missing the point of jazz. It would be the equivalent of performing rap covers.

Hardest genre to play? Computer generated nonsense like Xenakis - "Mists", with absolutely no time signature or consistent motif. But on the other hand, if someone performed that piece I wouldn't (as a listener) know when (not if) they were screwing up.

In middle school, one of my fellow orchestra members was featured on "From the Top", a showcase for exceptional young musicians, and he played the Sarasate. The very specific experience of "feelings of inadequacy as a result of watching a 12 year old playing Zigeunerweisen" just hit me in the feels, hard, from 20 years ago.

The problem with playing pieces that weren't written for you instrument is that what makes it difficult for that instrument might be quite simple for another. The Paganini for example is extremely difficult on violin because of the string changes, the bow crossings, the articulation, ie the left handed pizzicato which a bass player doesn't have to worry about. Having said that, there are likely pieces on the violin that are insanely difficult to play on the bass. While Charles is an insanely talented bass player and musician in general, I don't think playing violin pieces are a fair representation of classical music. But, as I am classically trained, I find it extremely difficult to improvise, so for me jazz is far more difficult. And Charles is right, classical can be technically learned with enough practice, but to play it musically is a completely different story. Some people practice a lifetime and still can't nail it.

What I respect the most is that you've ascended to the point where technical skill doesn't matter because you've essentially mastered that. You only need to explore what you're unique mind can make by creating art. This is a skill that I very rarely see amongst high level musicians so it's really cool to see it. The next level beyond this is reinventing or developing an entirely new style for the topic you're focused on (BASS) The best example is Tosin Abasin's guitar skill. I truly wish you the best!!!

Charles, I really love how you defend both genres equally based on their own strengths and positive aspects. Interestingly -and I’m not trying to elevate this to a debate on these and other genres- these are the two genres I am most drawn to. I am classically trained (piano and trumpet, although both at the “avocation level,” not as my professional calling), and I also play guitar and mandolin (bluegrass, folk, singer-songwriter, pop, a little rock ‘n roll), so I enjoy those as well and they, too, have their own levels of difficulty. But it’s really refreshing to see a pro not just jump to the “I like this best” response if that’s one’s own preferences. Well done! Well defended, well illustrated, and as the other comments say . . . unbelievably well preformed! Kudos, and thanks for the perspective!

When I first saw that Snarky Puppy keyboard solo I was in shock. The build, big picture musicality, and just plain chops made me say out loud that it was one of the best keyboard solos I've heard. The chords along with the lines just kept building until an unhurried, unforeseen, gently powerful climax at the end. I've been playing pro jazz piano since the late 80's and have a top five or so solos that rocked me, and this is one of them. Keep up the great work on these vids, you bring the love of music back my world!

A tie is the perfect and only assessment of the difficulty levels between both genres. I play sax and began with classical to develop technical skills and then moved on to jazz and funk for the freedom of interpretation. I have a love and respect for both genres and thoroughly blown away by Charles' virtuosity on the bass, which is actually my favorite instrument 😁

Holy crap. I already thought you were amazing but your right-hand technique on the very first piece just has me in awe. I came to bass from guitar and no matter how much I practice I still have to use a plectrum to get any speed on bass. Bravo, sir. Bravo.

Putting the notation up is a genius, I could see how you structured your improvisation. Love jazz personally, I think having to invoke the 'muse' takes the music created and pushes technical things up a level. However, you have to stand in awe at the proficiency of some of the young classical virtuosos.

I agree, classical and jazz are both difficult in different ways. I play both regularly. They require their own approaches and each has some unique skill sets. But, there's much in common, and both are beautiful.
