In this video I talk about my ELU PS274 sliding mitre saw, and why I think it is one of the best saws of its type ever made.

Understand completely. Had my 110 Hitachi for years and years. Single bevel and about 8 inch cut. Learned how to use it. Maintained it. It was a saw which I cut roofs with, cut skirts and archs with and then cut fine hardwood stair components with. The truth now is that I keep 3 different cordless saws for each job. I can't imagine having a saw that doesn't go past 55° and doesn't double tilt to at least 48 degrees each way.

Hi Daniel. Like the multitool, plunge saw and double tilt mitre saw, are tools that once you get, you would never be without and wonder how you got without them. (just the double tilt mitre saw for me to get, and then I'll be making a video of how great it is and what a plumb I've been for not getting sooner🤪) Cheers.

I do have a problem with it now, because the blade guard does not retract as it is supposed to. I still have my 1/4 router. Sadly, my 1/2 took a dump over ten years ago. Hadn't even had all that much use. I replaced it with a CMT (orange) that was identical to a yellow Dewalt. Both are identical to the latest Elu (newer model than my old Elu). I also had a beautiful little plunge saw that took a dump only months ago. My fault. Lack of maintenance. There is nothing like it on the market now. I still have my Bosch jigsaw, concrete drill/breaker and angle grinders. All from the late eighties. And my Elu belt sander, orbital sander, long planer and 235mm circular saw.

I have the exact same saws. Brought my dewalt dw701 electronic version, second hand from a tool shop in St Albans when I was 21 I’m now 39. Dewalt finally died year half ago. Only thing I replaced was the guard linkage which always wore out. Brought a Elu as a donor saw but swap the parts off the dewalt to rebuild the Elu. I think I was lucky with the dewalt as it was just the change over in brands. The dw701 being electronic, you could slow the motor down which ran at 1600w to compensate for the change of speeds. Also had soft start where as the ones you have and I currently have the same Elu as you run at 1200w straight through. These saws have stood the test of time. such a great bit of kit and as you said very consistent cutting. I currently have a Elu 1/2” router I’ve had for years and still going strong never gone wrong. This has troubled me for years when my current saw dies, I will again find the same saw, problem with this is parts are hard to come by these days unless you buy donor saws to rebuild “ like triggers broom “
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Your, 'triggers broom', quote tells me all I need to know about you,😍, and I think the philosophy behind it is extremely under debated.😎 If I'm honest, I originally bought the 2 DeWalt saws just as parts mules for the Elu, but upon collecting them both, it was obvious how great their condition was. Keep an eye on Ebay mate, and no end come up. Some are dogs, but some are really sweet.👍 Thanks for your great comment.

Great review, thankyou. This is strange that you now have two of these... this is what happened to me today. In a nutshell I have wanted an upgrade from my cheapy chop saw for a while now and as I have a huge decking job coming up very soon I needed to make a decision what to buy. However rather than investing hundreds on a massive, heavy slider I spotted a DW707 230v on Facebook Marketplace with its original stand, in very decent condition. Purchased it this morning and what an asolute bargain at £30.00 for the saw and stand! It gets better, half an hour before I was going to check out the 707 another DW saw was listed. A DW700 near mint condition, hardly used with its original razor-sharp blade... you guesed it £30.00 too. DW700 is going in my van, and the DW707 into the workshop. I can't believe the quality of these saws, and a very clever compact design too, as the twin chrome rails are actually inside the handle. Rather than hanging way out the back. Absolutely brilliant saws, all in £60.00 - reckon I've just saved myself around £400.00, oh and got a free one for the workshop! Check these saws out people, they are superb.

I just bought an Elu 274 from 1997 in very good nearly unused condition. Unfortunatly the block mechanism for changing the blade was broken inside and I didn't realize this lack when testing the Elu at the Ebay seller. But I managed this defect by removing some broken parts from the housing and blocking this black push button with a screw across a 3mm bore. Then I make two holes into the holding plate of the blade so I can use a simple key from an angle grinder together with the allen wrench. This works fine and the Elu itselfs works smooth, solid, powerfull and exact. The Elu comes with two original Elu blades, one of them unused, the other nearly looks like unused. Greetings from Germany, Bernd

Hi. Just come across your channel and I am enjoying going through your videos. I also have the old Dewalt saw that was copied off the ELU one. It's a great saw, nice and smooth sounding but I' slightly bent the radial arms carrying it about and it started to stick while sliding it and got a little dangerous. I replaced it with a Bosch one which is OK but never feels as strong as a Dewalt and the arms stick out the back so you can't get it tight to a wall. It's got a good 80 tooth blade in it though so I just use it for kitchen work and try to be gentle with it. I got the cheap 216mm Dewalt mitre saw from Screwfix about 18 months ago for studding and the like and for the money (£180 with the 10 per cent discount) I can't fault it. The Dewalt blades are also only about £14 on Amazon and for 3x2 and the like they are fine. Just throw them away when they lose their edge and buy another one. As for ELU. I also still have the old planer of theirs which I bought in the 80s. It's pretty heavy but a real beast. I tend to use the Dewalt cordless planer all the time though so the ELU never comes out of the loft. Look forward to watching more of your videos. All the best.

I had noticed that saw in previous videos. I have the exact same Elu chopsaw, bought back in 1997 I think, and got a lot of work out of it. The only thing I had to replace was the blade guard because the guide wheels broke off. I semi-retired it because I bought a 260mm Makita about 6 years ago to cope with the larger kitchen cornice I was having to fit. Now that you mention it I never had to look at the Elu for adjustment, I always feel the need to keep my eye on the Makita for some reason. The feature I really liked on the Elu was that the slide rails are concealed in the motor housing, gives a bit of protection if you get caught out on the rain. Funny enough I was contemplating bringing the Elu back because I just don't need the cutting capacity just now. I could hear the excitement in your voice throughout the video and your right, we can and do get attached to particular tools, oddly.

Hi John. Thanks for your great comment.😎 I probably have the same 260mm Makita saw as you for exactly the same purpose. (cutting larger cornice). I know, (as does my my Mrs), that I am a right sad case when it comes to tools, but these things are part of us and are essential to our job. They are expensive and need to be looked after. I suspect most people don't even think about the relationship they have with their tools, but nevertheless, everyone does to one degree or another have special story they could tell about a bit of kit, be it a particular job it helped them do or tackle a new task that had not been done before.😎 Thanks again.👍

I also had the Elu 12volt drill driver from 1993 (They were a huge step up from the 9.6volt Makita and Bosch offerings at that time) until I burnt it out drilling a mortice lock into an oak front door around 1998...By then Dewalt had ruined the old Elu drill drivers,and most of the old Elu range so I bought Panasonic instead (which I still buy). The only company that I think make tools as well as Elu did, are Mafell, Festool isn't bad but not in the same league build quality wise. Great vid 😅

Ive got the 110v dewalt version which ive had for about 17 years! Still going strong although i must say sliding mitre saws are not 100% cabinetry accurate... ive spent a good while flattening the bed and im always checking for square! 5 cut method lol I know a lot of the time it is user error for making inaccurate cuts as you can easily pull/push the saw out of alignment as you make the cut. But for 99% of the time its a perfect saw. Dont seem to remember getting a hold down for it and not been able to find one either...Sadly it doesn't do the new fancy trench cuts or cut big timbers but its its not meant for that so we adapt. On the whole i love mine and wouldn't swap it for anything else to do the same job. Great video as always keep up the great work!
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter 3 жыл бұрын
I agree Jon. The consistency and accuracy I talk of has be taken in the context of what the saw was designed for. You are quits right, and allowances have to be made if you have the saw laid over at 45 degrees and are straight cutting a piece of skirting for instance. The saw can easily be deflected off the cut line, but this is the case with most saws and just has to be accommodated for.😀 I've never used a Festool Kapex saw, but I suspect they are something else in terms of accuracy and an obvious choice for workshop use.👍 Thanks for great comment.

If memory serves me correctly your elu saw looks like a black and decker era one from the early nineties before they finally adopted the dewalt colour scheme. Elu in the 70's and 80's had a 3D style black /white logo ,then went 2D when Black and Decker bought them out which is the logo you have. I have a german built 1990 ps174 which is pure Elu (many of their tools were made in Switzerland). They do all look superficially the same however i was led to believe black and decker set about cost cutting immediately. 2 of the things i know about were putting cheaper bearings in the saws and they stopped using the swiss made orange coloured motor trigger switch .Ive stripped all my elu stuff and the bearings in the 80's ones are all high end , the nineties not so. I also have a ps274 elu the same as yours someone gave me a few years ago . My original 174 has an orange trigger, my later one is black . I also had another early nineties /B&D unit (which i sold ) with a blue trigger and 2D logo. I have some other 80's elu tools with the 3D logo and orange triggers. Anyone who can correct me please feel free. Always appreciate any more info on them

I've have had a similar, rock solid Electra Beckum Sliding compound for over 25 years and it's getting a bit tired. I went looking for a replacement that is compact enough to fit in the same space in my trailer and found an Elu ps 174 (Not sure of the difference yet, looks the same as the 274) It has been a home hobbyist saw and in great condition so I think it should see me to the end. I got the PS174 (250 cross cut and 12.5 kg) in about '87. Replaced it about ten years ago with an almost identical Dewalt DS700 because the motor wouldn't get up to speed anymore. Great saws. The only thing that has always pissed me off (and everyone else I know that had them) is that they are very stiff to slide out. Mainly for that reason (and because it was cheap) I just bought a Bosch GCM 800 SJ. I have only played with it for a bit, but it is already clear that it won't last anywhere near as long. My Elu was made in France; my Dewalt in Italy. Elu tools were made in West Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland, that I know of.

It has developed a problem and I wondered if you or any followers could help me. Despite the saw being in good overall condition and never having been dropped etc it has started to be very tight on its trammel bars or runners, this is only as it gets to full return, it glides well once it's 50mm out from the head castings. Hi there. I tried a big DeWalt 300mm mitre saw a few years ago on a recommendation from a mate, but just found it way to big and heavy for day to day work. Fortunately, DeWalt did a 30 day trial period, so I took it back, stuck with the Elu and bought a non sliding, 260mm Makita chop saw for the odd occasion I needed a bigger cut.👍 Thanks for your comment.😀

I've got a PS174 that I had to replace the power cord the other day 🙂. So far so good; only that i noticed that it has even become louder recently (not related to the cord change of course just that I noticed it since I didn't wear the usual ear protection for a quick test). I t always had that sound like here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nd6Fn5Oir9C7ZGg.htmlsi=JFYVjm8sleTUPKAF&t=684 , now with the most annoying part of it even louder. I didn't notice any rough running per se - so is it really likely the bearings that need to be replaced? Or maybe is it missing just a little grease in the right places? The saw hasn't really seen that much use.

@@thetallcarpenter I still have my PS174 but retired it over ten years ago, after 20 years of heavy use including cutting house frames and floor joists, decks, fences etc. The motor wouldn't get up to speed anymore. I was lucky to be able to replace it with an almost identical DW700 copy, so (@simonafloat) they were still made long after the PS274 became a thing. I assume they were made contemporaneously till the end to provide a lighter and a heavier version.

Hi there. To be honest, you really have to know what you're looking for with these saws and I was fairly lucky that I didn't have to travel to far to pick these up.😀 I think I mentioned in one of my other videos, that most mitre saws nowadays, (even cheaper ones), are all pretty good when used with a decent quality blade, but may not stand up to years and years of heavy use as well as the more expensive ones. My cousin has an Einhell one and its a perfectly decent bit of kit.😎 (remember, you could be using a hand saw instead😫) Thanks for your comment.👍
