Hi Guys,
I was able to get hands-on with the Tudor Black Bay P01 which won the GPHG Challange award. It's odd how this watch which is seen as ugly by the watch community went on to win an award from GPHG.

£2900 for a Tudor "it's not a lot of money" just show how insane the watch world has become...

$3900 USD for watch people with some coin is actually quite reasonable. BTW... I would like to see Tudor kill the Glamor, Advisor, classic lines, clair de rose and 1926; those are shit watches...absolute dog shit and there are much better choices elsewhere for similar money. I would also like to see them get rid of the BB 32/36/41 and the BBS&G simply because these aren't good extensions of the sports lineup. From there I would like to see a BB58 GMT (Coke so no clashing with BLRO), a BB58 Bronze, BBs with matching dial color to bezel color (red dial, blue dial, green dial), black ceramic North Flag with rubber strap, lolly pop hand version of the BB Chrono and finally a 36mm Tudor Submariner (Lollypop Hands) in black and blue (dial color matches the bezel colors and P01 crown).

It's a hell of a lot of money if you compare it to a Steinhart pro that is pretty damn close in fit, finish and quality. It's even more expensive if you've been into watches long enough to remember when a Tudor Submariner was a $350 watch advertised in Guns & Ammo...

@@ChefPelle You used to be able to get Rolex Red Submariners for under 1k... There are many watch brands out there that can machine a chunk of metal and throw a movement in it and be of ok quality...but that isn't the point. If you are ok with any hunk of metal with a movement in it then get whatever floats your boat. If you want a hunk of metal with an in-house chronometer movement, with a solid reputation, with pedigree and with historical significance then you'll have to pay more and considering the state of things today 3900 isn't much for a luxury watch.

@@eco8gator An in-house movement that's actually a stripped down Breitling B01 with zero finishing and decoration, a reputation of having a lot of warranty claims and a constant aura of "it's owned by Rolex"? To be honest, in reality, it's much closer to a Steinhart than it is to a Rolex. If it wasn't for the fact that it was related to Rolex it would be a $2000 watch at best.

This watch has the stigma of not being the Tudor Submariner that everyone expected and wanted. It predates any Seiko design and is a triumph. Time will prove its quality. People will be kicking themselves for not buying one.

When I first saw it online I was repulsed by the P01. I went into my AD two weeks ago and the owner showed me a P01 he had just gotten in. Looking at it in the display case it still didn't impress me. Once I put it on I was mesmerized. I have never seen a watch that so comes alive once it is on the wrist. I thought about it for a week and bought it yesterday. It is undeniably cool and will become a cult classic. My favorite thing is the finish. It looks rough cut and you can see striations in the metal. It is a very industrial, semi-finished look that is very appealing.

It’s a strange argument to use in house movements as the basis for competitiveness within that category. The entire category is under 4K and challenge does not necessarily equate production integration...

I love my P01. I bought it because I’d never seen anything like it, and since then I’ve never met a single person that owns one. It’s different, it’s durable, and it’s mine. For that, I love it. ❤

Great review, Adrian! Exactly right that it's great looking from the bezel inward! I do think, however, that the Ploprof is intrinsically cool looking and can be worn for style and for admirable eccentricity. The P01 though, nah.

I saw this in my local AD yesterday and thought it looked amazing. You are absolutely spot on with your observations regarding the strap, but it appears that Tudor make it easy to swap it out. You can probably supply the perfect alternative, but we shouldn't have to. It seems like an own goal from Tudor...

I like it. Thinking of getting one. I think its the best implementation of the snowflake hands. I'd prefer a vintage snowflake, but this is cheaper.

Its true the watch World found the P01 hard to like let alone love, but like many watches we are all to quick to form opinions before actually seeing the watch in person Adrian...my wife who wears a rotation of AP's & Rolex was instantly drawn to the Tudor P01. Also, she has not worn a watch on a leather strap in 25 years, she wanted one & because of everything I was hearing in the community I was very reluctant to pull the trigger on buying her one...but I pulled the trigger with our AD & she loves it, she thinks it is the perfect watch for weekends in jeans when shopping, for having coffee with friends or walking the dogs...she loves the unique look, style & design (my daughters both like it as well & I must admit so do I).

My biggest issue is the 12 hour bezel on a dive watch. I’ve always thought that was the main reason the prototype was rejected by the military. A rotating 12hr bezel is essentially worthless.

Not true, JCB who worked at AP at the time said it immediatly took off in Italy and did ok in a lot of countries.

And now we still hate it......well sometimes...it really depends on what day it is and time of the day...No this Tudor is not going to work, those lug clamps look ridiculous and they will trap dirt and sand and grit and how can it be cleaned?...if it didn't catch on in the 1960's what are aTudor thinking? That it's going to catch on now??

Searching for a tool watch and I would've bought a Seiko Samurai but the crown is at 3. I actually prefer and think it looks cooler with the crown at 4.. This Tudor is cool.

i kinda like it. my only issue, well my two issues, are 1) lug to lug length seems like its pretty long and 2) strap options seem limited to a two piece. a nato looks like it wouldn't work.

Given that there’s no such thing as a “tool watch” any more (at least in the way the descriptor used to be used) then all this piece offers is somewhat redundant functionality in an aesthetically challenging package. Having said that, I like it. A lot. Good video, btw.

Great review. I just bought one and it is an eye catcher for the right and wrong reasons. Yes, you either hate or love it. I think it’s a super tool watch with a unique side to it.

I love Marmite, in fact I'm enjoying a jar of their latest offering Marmite peanut butter, a weird concept but very tasty. The P01 looks like it maybe my "Marmite" watch. So as soon as I can I'm going to see if I can get a hands on look at one. Then decide if it's gone from Marmite to Grail for me.

I‘ll have one tomorrow 🫶🏻. It flew for years under my radar - don‘t know why. In the meantime I had 2 different Black Bays and sold them in the meantime. Love this P01 now: the quality, the tooling functions, the different look and the leather/rubber strap 👌🏼

I have to see this thing in-person. One compliment I can give it is the dial. I would love that dial on a more traditional watch. I'm surprised you said it was so wearable. That lug-to-lug is out of control.

I love the watch, just not on my wrist. My wrist shape/size elongates the lugs making it look like a train. On Floatlite's wrist it looks great though. Kudos to the great close up shots here.

I absolutely love it ! But then I’m the one with a collection of Seiko Tuna dive watches, and my everyday watch is a Tudor North Flag. I guess I’m just drawn toward the aesthetic of “tool” watches as apposed to more formal “dress” watches.

the crownguard is what I like the most. I would have no trouble settling with a bb58 but knowing how I wear watches a crown guard is necessary.For me I like the offeset crown position.

Hmmm...why go to the trouble of making a rubber/hybrid strap that can't get wet? I agree, doesn't make sense. Many leather straps can be considered water resistant, are we sure this one is not?

Horage should have won the “challenge” award in my opinion. They have a true in-house movement (designed and built by a team of 5-7 super-cool people!) and the styling is striking. That’s a brand that folks should seriously check out.

Reminds me of a Frankenstein watch. Datejust machine bezel from the 1970's, Seiko Diver, with a bit of Explorer 2 on top. I really like the watch.

This timepiece (TUDOR) just look stunning on your wrist, it fits perfectly, the size is awesome, I love how they combine between the modern look dial and the vintage taste when it comes to the unique strap, combining those 2 elements is not that easy, but it also adds a serious identity to the watch, I believe now I can spot and identity this unique timepiece thousand of meters away + it’s a cool tool watch with good functions

It took me 2 years to get excited about the P01. the watch wears incredibly well and casually. It is really unique and not the average diving watch but that is exactly what makes it special.

as of last weekend the ad still has one in the case new,i thought for sure it would have sold out due to its quirky style like the rolex airking that i was lucky enough to get at the same dealer but this watch as cool as it is i dont see it wanted much. ebay is loaded with them , next

It certainly looks different when I saw it at recent Mapping & Webb / Tudor event, slimmer than I expected, I get the locking mechanism but it’s not kind to my eyes. The original was made for the military and function comes before aesthetics but I think I’d rather have a GS quartz GMT for similar money 😀😀. Great video Adrian 😀😎👍🏼

Yeah thought the same thing, don’t like the metal extensions there but I like the face and dial. It’s a deal breaker for me. Kind of Invictaish, where it seems overdone.

It's just like my black Bay Steel just with a four o'clock Crown and a weird strap ..but essentially it's very similar . you know what I mean. excellent video👍
