Is this the best Sleeper Service in the UK? GWR's Night Riviera Train from Penzance to London

Күн бұрын

OK guys, leg 3 of the 'long weekend trip-fest' and I'm catching the Night Riviera sleeper back from Penzance to London Paddington.
It really was a great evening for it, some great views across the bay as the train departed for its destination. I had a little time to explore the lounge and the room before trying to get some sleep for the night.
I'd been on the (newish) Caledonian Sleeper a year or so back and I couldn't help but compare this service to that. I'll sum up my feelings on that towards the end of the video, and I'll also share the price I paid which I thought was pretty good value.
As always, thanks for watching, I'm almost halfway through now and the next leg finds me back on the National Express coach and I'm really looking forward to telling you what I thought about that one!!
If you have the time (and the inclination) I would really appreciate a like, comment or subscribe if you haven't already. And if you've been on any of the sleeper services in the UK, I'd love to know what you think is the better service.
Cheers for now!
Mark

Hi Jill, thanks for the comment. Yes, I did the outward journey in the day, just because there is such fantastic scenery I didn't want to miss it. I'd definitely try the sleeper that way next time - maybe for a trip to the Scilly Isles? That could be a future plan. Cheers, Mark

The GWR "Night Riviera" Sleeper is a good way to start a journey to the lovely Isles of Scilly, which are located 28 miles out in the Atlantic. If you get the chance, stay at the Star Castle hotel on St. Mary's. Far from cheap but highly atmospheric!

Has been on my bucket list for ages and finally did the round trip (down & back) only last week (May 2023). Had a day in Penzance area & went on local bus to St.Ives. Found it difficult to sleep on train due to width of bed. Cramp forced me to wake up at 5ish so sat in lounge car into London. Wouldn’t necessarily do it again & would probably do the day train to see more on journey next week. Great video 👍

Funny thing is, I think doing the journey down in the day was beneficial because I saw all the scenic stuff then and obvs that wouldn’t be the case at night. Would I do anything different next time? Yes, take Richard’s advice of drinking whisky or something and maybe putting some headphones on listening to music until I, hopefully, fell asleep!

@@LetsMakeaTrip - You could try getting your head down in the cabin before the train starts to move! Although the drivers who operate the Class 57 locomotives take great care to brake and accelerate very gently, to reduce jerks and jolts to an absolute minimum! The real reason why the "Night Riviera" (or, if you prefer the Cornish language version, "Koskador Ruvyet an Nos") survives is, I suspect, because a day train would have to leave Paddington at an impossibly early hour to connect with the "Scillonian" ferry sailing from Penzance to St. Mary's on the beautiful Isles of Scilly!

I agree that the GWR Night Riviera might have been on a par with the Caledonian sleeper BUT only when both operators had MK3 stock... Now that Caledonian sleeper has its MK5 stock they are miles ahead in my opinion... I have used the Caledonian sleeper 6 times now, the first wasn't perhaps the best introduction as it was in the seated coach and didn't enjoy the experience at all.... then all of that changed when I booked a club solo en suite room from Inverness to London Euston.... the only down side to the experience was that the club lounge car was out of action due to covid but i still gave the experience a 8/10 .
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, thanks for the comment. Yes I had a similar experience with the new Cal Sleeper before covid when they texted me in the afternoon to say the lounge car would be shut because they didn’t have any staff! That t need to put a slight dampener on the experience as all four of us had to go and buy some food to take with us. A year before that I’d had a great time on the old stock though quite worn, the whole sleeper experience was fantastic all the way up to Fort William. Yes I do agree the cabins are quite nice on the Mk5’s. I should take another trip on it soon tbh, it’s just been so hit and miss with staffing and reliability- hopefully things are improving.

Hey Mark - good video. I guess you are saving the cost of a night's accommodation too which makes it even better value, even if you might need to check straight into another hotel to catch up on your sleep after a 5am arrival! FYI - when I watched this video, KZfaq served me an ad first... You're not getting any of that action but I think its a compliment as KZfaq has obviously judged your content appropriate to associate with its advertisers. Tui Holidays, in case you were wondering. Some don't like KZfaq taking advantage of their content for it's profit, but I think there's a compliment hidden away in their decision! Cheers

Hi Matt, good to hear from you again! Yes, if you look at my eyes closely they're slightly bloodshot at Paddington and will be getting progressively worse during legs 4 & 5 of this trip until (I would hazard a guess) around midnight, somewhere just off the coast of Anglesey!! Interesting feedback on the Tui Ad - thanks. I wonder how the notorious algorithm is determining this? I have seen a significant uptick on the important stuff - sub count and hours watched, which is probably linked to regularity of uploads I guess and that must influence the algorithm somehow. I don't really know tbh! As I get closer, I'd like to think I'm not obsessing too much about the magic 1k sub figure. But I'd definitely consider it an achievement to reach it considering I don't really know what I'm doing much and I'm still trying to fit it all in around my regular full-time job. I think you said in one of your videos the 4k watch hours is the easy bit! Maybe one day I'll be popular enough for Tui to give me a free holiday (in return for an unbiased review of course lol!). All the best, Mark

Good video, Mark! I was surprised to see such a narrow aisle on the sleeping coach, but probably it's due to the smaller cross section on British train lines, compared to Continental lines. The train looks very comfortable, with compartments and bar. Best regards, Dirk

British loading gauge is one of the most restrictive in the world, so the carriages are going to be smaller then EU and US ones.
@DaveSuperThomas
@DaveSuperThomas 2 жыл бұрын
@@still_guns - Until 1892 the Great Western Railway's Paddington to Penzance line was Broad Gauge - where the rails were laid 8ft apart - so in theory British Rail could have built Mark 3 Sleeper carriages which were wider than usual, specifically for this route .... in much the same way that the "Thames Turbo" Class 165 commuter trains, for use on the GWR and GCR lines out of London, are wider than usual. However this would have prevented the Great Western Main Line Sleeper carriages from working over any other route on the national network, and it would have been very expensive to construct a small number of non-standard coaches for this sole purpose. A shame, but there you are! I'm 5ft 10ins tall and can stretch out full length in a Night Riviera Sleeper berth - but only just! A sad and irritating legacy of the "Coal Wagon Gauge" which George Stephenson misguidedly adopted in 1830 for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway!

The Lounge Car on the Great Western Railway's "Night Riviera" sleeper train is essentially a "pub on wheels" which serves alcoholic drinks and packets of crisps. Brill video once again mark… never taken a sleeper train before so looking forward to taking one in the near future… all very clean and organised by the looks of it… though presumably in normal circumstances a full breakfast and maybe even dinner would’ve been provided so for the price you payed which was £84, I don’t think is entirely worth it atm, though it’s still not overpriced which is good… Also I bet when you stepped off at Paddington I bet it was like you just came off a red eye flight from New York or something 🤣, bet you were shattered!

Hey SL, thanks for the kind words - much appreciated! When I booked this originally it was £59 which was certainly a great price but, as per usual, I had to postpone. I’m not sure about the food, I know when I went on the old Caledonian Sleeper we had a better breakfast but dinner was separate. Others may be able to advise on this so I’ll defer to anyone who has more knowledge on how it operated pre-restrictions. As for the red eye, well yes my eyes were looking a bit bloodshot at the end of the video, I was pretty knackered then but it would be another 18 hours (and another three videos) before I’d get any sleep!

I'm sorry to say that the only complimentary refreshments on the "Night Riviera" are the hot chocolate and packet of biscuits which passengers occupying cabins can claim in the Lounge Car (not sure if it's only the one, or you can ask for refills) in the evening, and the hot breakfast (Bacon roll, biscuits and hot drink) served to your berth in the morning. The Lounge Car (which, incidentally, stays open all night) is essentially a pub on wheels and serves hot and cold soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and bar snacks such as packets of crisps. A full, three-course hot dinner is sadly not an option.

Cloth face masks are generally acceptable pretty much everywhere in England; other parts of the UK might be different I took a train from London to Doncaster earlier this week, and most people weren't wearing masks in their seats. There again, the carriage was pretty quiet. People were wearing them more diligently on the tube, local trains & buses in London, which were quite busy.

Nice as usual. I'm still yet to take either sleeper as an adult (went to Penzance as a kid with the family - in the seats!) But the big question - how is the height of the sink for, err, night time emergencies? 🤣

No, we don't have a "sink" with hot and cold running water in our sleeping compartment. What we do have is a wash basin! Sinks belong in kitchens, not bedrooms, where they are used for washing clothes and crockery. Great Western Railway has done a good job of refurbishing its forty year-old, ex-British Rail Mark 3 Sleeper carriages to a high standard, but at the expense of reduced storage space for hand luggage. There used to be two, sturdy, full-width shelves across the width of the cabin, with the hinged lid of the wash basin forming half of the lower one, which could be used to store laptops or holdalls. If the upper berth is not in use, the lovely thick duvet usually ends up being bundled under the lower bunk - as the Stewardess said to me, "There's nowhere else for it to go". It's interesting to compare and to contrast the two, very different approaches taken by GWR and Serco Group plc to their respective Sleeper services, the former being an exclusively Standard Class product whilst with Caledonian Sleepers you need a First Class ticket to travel in an en suite cabin. On the "Night Riviera" Sleeper passengers travelling on cheap Super Off Peak Standard tickets still get a complimentary light hot breakfast served to their cabin, whilst on the Caledonian Sleeper a hot breakfast - such as it is - is only complimentary in First Class. Full marks to GWR for allowing Sleeper customers to access Queen Victoria's private waiting room at Paddington Station, with its complimentary refreshments, and for providing Sleeper Lounges (with scrupulously clean hot showers) at Truro and Penzance. All GWR needs to do now is to provide a hot meals option in the Lounge Car - anyone fancy the Cornish signature dish of Starrey Gazey Pie? - and sort out those dreadful bar stools!

Hi DaveSuperThomas and thanks for the engagement on this video - much appreciated. When I started reading your comment, I must admit I rolled my eyes a bit about the sink Vs washbasin bit 😂 I did wash a couple of pairs of socks in it so maybe there should be a further (hybrid) name for it? Anyway, I enjoyed reading the detail after that, particularly the historical information regarding the cabin. It was my first time on the Night Riviera and I really enjoyed it. I have travelled on the Caledonian Sleeper (both old and new). I like the new First Class cabins with their en-suite facilities, but they’re a bit pricey! I couldn’t comment on the new lounge car as they informed us that food wouldn’t be available on the day of our trip because of ‘staff shortages’ (I would like to think Serco have sorted this out by now!j. I loved the old lounge car even though it was terribly dated. It just had that old-school sleeper feel and crossing a snow-covered Rannoch Moor whilst eating a proper breakfast is such a memorable experience. And yes I agree that the Night Riviera lounge car could provide a much more comprehensive service but, pound-for-pound, I think it’s better value than the Calsleeper. It’s a shame I didn’t get a better night’s sleep, maybe if I’d have known hot chocolate was available that would have helped. Just to add for the benefit of others that showers are also available at Paddington which was a very welcome sight for me so early in the morning. Thanks for the comment(s). All the best, Mark PS, GWR’s own website calls it a sink 🤔😊.

In my part of the UK, this is commonly known as a sink, regardless of size or usage. I guess it all depends on the individual's particular dialect.

I think GWR have done a better job of this refurbishment than the brand new Cally Sleeper trains - yes they have ensuite toilet and shower - but I wasn’t massively impressed. This looks much more classy.

Hi Roger, thanks for the comment. And I agree the new Cal Sleeper - well I didn't have a great experience with my trip on it tbh. They texted us in the afternoon before departure saying there wasn't going to be any food or drink so we had to go and buy our own (but they very kindly allowed us to eat it in their lounge car!!). Staffing issues apparently. This was before 'you know what' and the reliability/service/crew issues seem to have plagued the trains ever since. The shower is a bit of a squeeze tbh and I would rather have one at the end of my journey (like at Paddington). It's a shame really as the old service was amazing and I had a brilliant time on that. I just wouldn't trust the new one now until they improve it. All the best, Mark

Cornish translations? Increasing the sense of separateness which started with Wales. Now even their road signs are in Welsh. Not good for a supposedly United Kingdom.

Um.....the train was starting from Cornwall! It's really nice seeing greater use of the Cornish language on public transport. It's now familiar to see Welsh used on trains, stations, buses etc as well as road signs in Wales. I also notice English is being used now on trains in England and there are signs in French on station platforms in France, which is cool.

I think it’s more difficult atm, not just because of the mask wearing but there’s also a lot more to try and explain because of restrictions and how they need to do things etc etc. It’s good that they check whether you have any onward connections too.
