@@LanceHedrick does the Decent have the ability to dynamically change the flow rate or pressure based on what it’s seeing? So if you program it by the data you want to see will it dynamically adjust as the shot goes on? Or is it only pre programmed profiles. If it doesn’t right now, are there future plans for it to do that? Like if it sees the pressure increase it knows to pull back pressure or flow rate. Etc. Thank you.

DISCLAIMER- Sadly, looks like I need to make something clear again because there are presumptuous people in the world. I have no affiliation with Decent outside of their gracious 20% discount. I still paid well over $2,000 out of pocket for this machine. Not only that, but I tried to buy one when they first launched years ago, but was much too poor even at the price tag then of $1,000. I do not get anything for this video, I do not make any money from sales. I genuinely think this machine is revolutionary. And you can know this is true because if I were lying, I'd be liable for not disclosing. So, again, Decent did NOT request a video. I do NOT receive compensation. I DID receive a discount, but it was because Decent believes in education. They extended a bigger discount off to Jonathan Gagne (25%) because he is an astrophysicist and is doing incredible work with his machine. Please chill and know if there is an incentive, I will ALWAYS disclose it!

Awesome breakdown. Thanks. I learned from your video that I think among all of the decent’s unique contributions to the espresso machine world, the most incredible might be the repeatability of complex shots. One can produce a complex shot on a lever machine, but to repeat it reliably will forever be subjective. To be able to share a shot profile, literally around the world, and to drink an identical shot of coffee on different continents….. that’s crazy town. Very cool. Thanks again

What’s your thought about this machine now, after a year - where they bumped up the price to $4k? Do you recommend anything else around this price range? The main attraction of this machine for me is control over parameters and (possibly) repeatability of shots, and maybe using adaptive profile (that Gagne made). I want to know that considering all this, is this machine the only choice I have to get a nice fruity, crisp and repeatable shot of lightly roasted coffee? My only concern is this machine does not maintain its residual value considering fast tech advancement (compared to a classic machines). Love to hear what you think.

@victorbarroscoch 2 жыл бұрын
Is it doable? Yes, but don't underestimate the amount of work it takes to design all the control loops, state observers, profile generation algorithms, actuation systems, general software etc. Plus all the testing and tweaking. It's a lot of time and money invested to arrive at something that probably won't be anywhere near robust as the Decent. Maybe modding a machine just to have the graphing capability, plus some temperature control, would be simple enough for a diy. Don't get me wrong, I love building stuff, I even made my own temperature controlled kettle, but there's a threshold between diy/buy that can vary a lot on your skill and how much you value your time.

The feature the Acaia Lunar scale has where it displays the flow rate in grams should be integrated into the decent so it just isn't just measuring the the input flow but measures the output flow as well. Well, different machines will pull somewhat differently. Can't replicate grind sizes on different machines for the most part. Or graphs exactly. I'd go finer and maybe try to roughly emulate the graph. Of course, the decent graph, even if perfectly emulated, likely won't taste the same all things held constant.

Found you via “Daddy Hoff” courtesy of KZfaq, loving your content. 👍🏻 Your milk steaming tutorials have been a great help. I only got into home espresso this year and am trying my best to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Ironically I’m having more trouble with perfect milk texture than I am with my shots. I’m either stretching the milk too much or too little. Although I’m getting a great roll there always seems to be a clump of bubbles on the top that haven’t been incorporated into the milk. If I stretch less I lose those bubbles but I don’t have enough texture to create any art. I keep the wand locked in the position you showed. I have a Silvia and I’m wondering if I need to be more gentle opening up the steam. If I open up too quickly I’m either getting the horrible screeching or a milk explosion rather than a nice controlled stretch. Any pointers to where I’m going wrong?

I enjoy every minute of your videos Lance! Great work again! I'm not sure if I really 'need' a decent, I'm very happy with my Flair 58, and will add a SEP and acaia soon for logging/replication. Part of the decent-temptation is being able to join the club of cool kids and nerd out in those closed groups... :-) I had a chat here yesterday with Stéphane Ribes (which you might also know from the decent community) on how we like light roast espresso, and how medium roast has been the default "espresso-roast" maybe because most machines just aren't capable of doing a full extraction of all the good stuff, leaving you with an unextracted sour mess. I can get shots from my Flair 58 that have the same flavor balance as a well-executed V60 (but much more intense of course). I have no doubt the decent is one of the only semi-automatic machines that can get close, while still keeping the roast level fairly light. Speaking of roasts, I use a stronghold, which is the tesla of coffee roasters. ;-)

It doesn't introduce more variables- it just gives you control over variables that are constant in other machines, if that makes sense. Look at the amount of electronics and amount of components packed into this. It is definitely a maintenance nightmare with a higher probability in component failure. I prefer to be comfortable with my Bezzera Strega machine which has lasted for almost a decade with almost no problem making thousands of delicious cafe quality espressos. Durability and reliability are more important than fanciful and confusing controls.
@LanceHedrick

For you, sure. For others, perhaps not. Plus, it depends largely on your ability to maintain. On top of all that, decent is known to be quite amenable to replacing parts as they continue to push forward. They're a young company, but the results this far are exciting. But as I said in the video, this isn't for everyone, so really, anything arguing against the machine is moot since I'm not selling them lol. This is just an introduction to an interesting machine. Would one be able to see the difference in pressure when portafilters are not set to the same space with the Decent? I've definitely noticed that between baristas there can be large differences in how long espresso can take while set at the same grind and dose. I've just never seen this talked about when discussing espresso and feel like it may be essential to espresso introductions, but maybe it's all in my head 🤷

I’ll be contentious again. During a blooming shot you say it needs a finer grind. Not the case of you stop the flow through the pick completely. The saturation will actually cause a lock due to surface tension. To make a blooming thus requires a coarser grind than if it was to be continuous flow rate shot. That said I appreciate the introduction to the decent and that reinvention of the boiler is amazing
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
This isn't true. Have you ever pulled a blooming? Even Scott Rao who created the shot discusses how most grinders can't get fine enough for a blooming style shot.
@scottklandl488

@@LanceHedrick I’ve mucked around in the arena and found that even at 200 psi I couldn’t push water through a soaked puck while continuously water would flow and pull a shot. These were back to back attempts and on multiple occasions. I’ll also throw out bean humidity has HUGE effect on grind Love yer work Lance!
@scottklandl488
@scottklandl488 2 жыл бұрын
Or to add to as a hydrodynamics equation. There is a point at which a grind is so fine and so regular that it will block the flow of water. If you saturate anything with water it will bind the particles together. Thusly more fine particles does not increase flow but rather restricts flow

At 20:04 you state that there are no machines "that can do everything", which means that there are things that the Decent cannot do. Would love for you to elaborate on this. What is it that the Decent cannot do? Are any of these important? I ask for all of us out here who are looking for a new, future proof machine. Also, would you recommend this machine for a non-coffee-gear-head? For example, my wife likes to pull a shot every now and then but is uninterested in anything too complicated. It would be great if she could simply use the already dialed-in grinder setting and a pre-saved profile on the Decent.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! First, if not a gear head, no. I wouldn't recommend the decent. As for what it can't do, it was less about what it can't do, because it can technically do anything, but moreso that a lot of what it can do is outperformed by other machines. It's like going to a restaurant with a HUGE menu. Likely, they're just OK at all the dishes, although it is nice to have a place for everyone's preferences. Haha
