In all seriousness though, to give you an idea on how close IndyCar really is, Grosjean has done well since doing a limited schedule last year. Despite that limited schedule, he still nearly scored as many points as IndyCar's 2021 rookie of the year Scott McLaughlin, a New Zealand driver who was previously a dominate force in the Supercars Championship in Australia. Grosjean pointed out how nobody eyed the experience difference between the two, where Grosjean had nearly 20 years of open-wheel experience compared to McLaughlin's one year. At the first race of 2022, McLaughlin proceeded to clean the field's clock in a dominating win at St. Petersburg, therefore getting an IndyCar win before Grosjean. So yeah. Watch more IndyCar. That way, there may be less; F1 fans: [Watches one IndyCar race] F1 fans: "Ericsson won?! *THIS SERIES SUCKS!!"*

I mean, Ericsson was up against some tough competition in sauber, he was also quite heavy and ran most of his career without any water during the races. Some are even speculating that charles got some “tips” from ferrari, which is quite clear actually, when you look at Abu Dhabi 2018 quali, where the only point on track where he was faster was the first sector, which is basically just made up of three straights.

I personally think Pato would be first in line for a drive at McLaren before Herta if I'm being honest, Pato is already in the McLaren family and whilst he has a new Indy contract there wouldn't be a problem releasing him from that contract and into a McLaren F1 drive, and plus that relationship with Zak is already there. Herta's best bet is if Andretti's bid to have a team in F1 succeeds, though I do agree he deserves a chance in F1.

As a Mexican American, even if Pato is an Irish white by blood, he’s still disadvantaged by being Mexican. I think McLaren would go with the American for the media advantage. @eggselent9814

However i don't think Pato would necessarily want to go to F1. Don't get me wrong he could challenge for a title in the right equipment, but its a high risk going from a secure championship-caliber team in IndyCar to a upper midfield team in F1 without any chance of actually having a shot at winning anything but a lucky race win. Plus it could kill his confidence.

@pirozcontractor6006
@pirozcontractor6006 Жыл бұрын
@@henry247 I mean, Drugovich is in his third season, and realistically speaking, he should have beaten Zhou last season ( and bear in mind that was when he was actually at a top team), yet the guy couldn't even snag a win last season. He's literally turning out almost like De Vries did in F2, while we've got Pourchaire just behind him; following him and Daruvala still are two strong rookies in Sargeant and Hauger. Anything can still happen imo though. *Now here's the long read* It doesn't help Drugovich that he's not in an academy. Not to mention pretty much all of them already have some focus on other Juniors: Williams have Sargeant (and Nissany, but he's never getting near a race seat tbh). Sauber have Pourchaire. Even with Vips gone, Red Bull still have four Juniors in F2 alone this year (but Tsunoda looks like he'll retain his seat and Gasly is already staying on for 2023) Even if he's not racing, Ferrari still have Shwartzman (someone who has shown much more potential than Drugovich) as their test driver this year, and with his newly acquired Israeli license could be a wildcard option to replace Mick at Haas. They also have A. Leclerc, Bearman, and Camara (A Brazilian too) in the lower ranks doing well. Mercedes have Vesti (and also their own superstar in the lower ranks in Kimi Antonelli, go search up that kid) And Alpine have Doohan, not to mention their superstar in Piastri. Any other team not mentioned are simply locked in already and won't risk a rookie. Talent and/or budget are often seen as all that's needed to get to F1, but timing is also significant too. And matter of fact is, it's looking like Drugovich is a little too late to the party. In my opinion (feel free to dispute it), if he even wants a chance at an F1 seat, he'll have to dominate the F2 championship to the end, maybe even more than De Vries did. Not impossible, sure, but once Prema and Carlin fully come into force will he still be unstoppable?

As an American, I wouldn't get too excited yet. I'm an old fart, so I've seen heard this song before. It seems every 10-15 years, F1 has a brief spurt of popularity in the US and we hear "Formula One is finally grabbing hold in America". it lasts for maybe a year or two. Last time it was when the USGP started its brief career at Indianapolis. We all know how that ended. I heard it in the 70's, the 80's, the 90's, the 00's. Not in the 10's, when there wasn't even a thought of the US having any interest in F1 (or vice versa). Now it's started up again. Maybe this time it lasts. Who knows?

@@toad6417 Back in the late 60's & early 70's, Formula One was very big in the US. Jackie Stewart was as famous as any driver in any American race series. and there was Watkins Glen, which drew the biggest crowds in F1, and American drivers who got good results like Andretti & Peter Revson. When Revson & Donohue were killed, one right after the other, that was pretty much the end of the US in F1. especially Donohue, because without him, Penske dropped his F1 team. Then Bernie took over and drove all Americans out of Formula One for 30 years. Not to say F1 was on TV much in the 70's, but neither was IndyCar or NASCAR. All three would occasionally turn up on ABC's Wide World of Sports or the CBS Sports Spectacular. the only race that was shown flag-to-flag was the Indy 500, and even that was shown on tape delay, until 1985.

Colton is a brilliant driver- he’s particularly good on road circuits. I was at the IndyCar races at Laguna Seca and Long Beach- two particularly challenging circuits and no one was able to touch him. Same at the Indy GP this year in the wet. Also- Mears tested a Brabham in 1980 at Riverside, right before the Long Beach GP. Bernie Ecclestone was impressed after Mears won the 1979 Indy 500 at only his second attempt, so he invited Mears to test a Brabham at Riverside just before the Long Beach GP. So Mears got on a plane to Los Angeles and drove an hour out to Riverside to test. He was only 2 tenths off Nelson Piquet’s times after, in his own words “I started driving the s*** out of that thing”. Mears impressed so much that Ecclestone tried to enter him in a third car at the Long Beach GP- but for some reason he was not able to. Piquet dominated that race weekend- pole, fastest lap and the win. Imagine if Mears had raced at Long Beach… he would have given Piquet a real run for his money.

It's funny that how you describe Colton on this video is exactly the opposite of the type of driver his father was. Bryan was excellent technically, very careful, didn't crash and finished races. Some observers thought he wasn't aggressive enough. Chip Ganassi fired him and he and Mo Nunn even questioned his courage (using the euphemism "lack of commitment"). If Bryan could instill some of his own driving personality into Colton, and Colton could combine the two approaches, he would be winning championships. BTW, Bryan also won a couple of races in the IRL, showing more versatility he is given credit for, by winning both on the short oval at Kansas and on the superspeedway at Michigan, and by the time he was in the IRL, all the big teams had come over from CART (he was driving for Andretti), so there's no reason not to give him credit for these. Also BTW, if F1 was really interested in the BEST American driver, they'd try to sign up Kyle Larson. Would never happen, but he is the best by far.

I think it is a shame that one of the things being held against Colton is his record at IndyCar in not yet having an Indy championship. Garnering a championship at IndyCar is much more difficult than many think. It is an extremely experienced competitive and competent field of drivers and luck often times plays much into a championship as skill and experience. But Colton has already shown that he can rise to the top in a field of Cutthroat best friend drivers. He may not yet have the consistency for a championship but he has shown that he has the speed and ability. His time is coming no matter where he goes or stays.

Herta and O'Ward have the huge natural talent and bravery of Villeneuve and Montoya imo... But they haven't put it all together yet. JV and JPM absolutely bossed CART in it's heyday, against some formidable rivals. They won championships, Indy 500's and had dominant, spectacular individual races. In comparison Herta and O'Ward just don't stack up... at least not yet. If they want a strong shot in F1 with a quality team, they have to replicate Villeneuve and Montoya.

As someone who got into F1 & IndyCar pretty recently (and at the same time-I’m a lifelong Nascar fan), I had the “IndyCar is the F1 Retirement Home” mindset for quite a while. What I really wish IndyCar did to stymie this was to promote its development ladder, which actually has a promotion/scholarship system to make sure that underfunded drivers get shots at higher levels. However, IndyLights (equivalent to F2) races are never televised, promoted, or even reported on by IndyCar and its broadcast partners, while Nascar has both its developmental series (Xfinity & Trucks) on cable. As a result, you can follow, say, Christopher Bell from Trucks to Xfinity to Nascar Cup, but the only IndyCar guys anyone knows are ex-F1 drivers.

The first step to getting an IndyCar driver into F1 is the way Superlicense points are rewarded. The series should be awarded as such. Also, I'm pretty sure F1 is hemming and hawing about Andretti entering F1 because they don't want to Americanize the sport *that* much. If Andretti would enter, then Colton would be a sure bet.

A book I read a long time ago about mountain climbing in North America has a thought about this; American climbers in the 50's and 60's were well-derided for their limited sorties outside of the North American continent during that time. European climbers would look down their noses at the Americans. The "excuse" given was that there was so much to climb in North America that they didn't really see a reason to leave the continent. This was widely mocked. Then, Europeans began to visit Yosemite, and they didn't want to leave either. We've got such a strong racing scene, with sponsorship dollars that have the disclaimer of "Not Valid Outside of North America", and a similar attitude towards American drivers that American climbers got in the 50's and 60's. Those factors lead to people decided not to leave. Also; Herta is considered the most talented driver on an Andretti team whose' luck resides somewhere on the "moved the headstone but kept the bodies" level. Bad strategy calls, teammate "interactions", and a general tendency for a race to go sideways through no fault of his own, seems to lead to him overdriving his car to compensate for team screwups, either past or perceived future. Still, someone needs to sit him down and have a serious heart to heart with him about how finishing third in a car faster than the first two is still preferable than finishing 19th because of a journey into another dimension.

Mario Andretti IS a full-on American. America is a nation of immigrations and we absolutely embrace folks like Andretti that chose to make their home here as much as folks that are born here. I'm still stunned that Liberty isn't doing everything in its power to get Andretti on the grid. They could bring whichever drivers they think would be the most likely to thrive in the very different world of F1 - preferably at least one American. Regarding Herta, remember that after his initial great early seasons in F1, Max had that godawful year which we didn't really expect, but on thinking about it (and what little time even by then he'd had in an actual car), it made sense. Since then, he pretty much settled down and has rarely gone mentally awol. It's quite possible that after a rookie year of undoubted sheer terror (like _so many others_ before him!), Herta might well do the same thing? He might find his niche. And if he doesn't, there are plenty of others!
