Let's have a quick look and chat about the Coventry Ring Road. Is it really the scariest road in the UK or does it not deserve its fearsome reputation?

One of the features I like of the Coventry ring road is the digital signage as it's not common and it means the signs don't fade

As a Coventrian, I’ve never found the ring road difficult to use, but I can see why someone who’s never driven on it might find it scary. Some of the junctions are very short, meaning not much room for weaving, leading to cars slowing down and that’s when there’s a problem. If you just flow with the traffic and go when you can it works ok. It’s also great for getting round the city…on weekends when it’s closed (eg Motorfest), you realise how useful it is.

I said that before you even said it 😁 used to drive my Artic round it very often . The only good thing is that if you miss a junction you just go round and try again !

I had in the 1980s to travel to Coventry for regional meetings for work and I traveled by train. I remember getting out of the station and feeling there was this huge barrier round the inner city that didn't help my traveling on foot to the location of meetings.

From a pedestrian's point of view the junction by the station has been much improved. Gone is the first, scary and narrow, subway... instead there's a wide thoroughfare (pedestrian only) The ring road now goes underground here, so it all seems much more pedestrian-friendly. You do have to cross one of the exit slip roads but only really need to activate the lights at that crossing at the busiest times. It's really tons better!

It’s all been remodelled there for that reason. Now a straight route from the front door to Greyfriars Green.

I live in Coventry and I’ve never really been frightened of the ring road as it has an average speed of 35-40 mph! The M60 in Manchester has several junctions on top of each other where traffic travels between 50 and 70 mph! Far more dangerous. Just be very vigilant on either of these roads. The ring road will be sparing!

Brilliant video, I've been on the Coventry ring road quite a few times and it can be confusing but it's perfectly fine if you know where you're going. Would be nice to see some improvements like maybe traffic lights which you suggested for example.

The major problem is the left lane hoggers who are triggered when you move back across from the right Lane to exit your junction, and try and close down your space. It’s infuriating and still happens all of the time.

Coventry ring road is scary and I hate using it even though I moved to W Mids 30 years ago. The major suprise is its not unigue. The same design team started on Reading. Thankfully they cancelled th job after a handful of junctions hadbeen built

Derby city centre has one of those weaving junctions and yeah it's scary and puts you into a hyperfocus mode. They need to be updated because the perceived flow ain't worth the danger.

Weaving works well when you know that everyone on the right has to go left and everyone on the left has to go right. This is one of the reasons that cloverleafs with collector/distributor lanes work much better than cloverleafs without them.

There is weaving and there is weaving but that is next level dangerous. It’s hard to believe that Civil Engineers, even in the 1960’s, we’re not aware of the risk and impact on capacity. My guess is they were under political pressure to put ramps where they did. You are right about the roads within the ring roads. There are well documented pros and cons about ring roads but one of the biggest pros is that you can give the streets within the ring back to the people.

Can't believe you were in town and didn't let me know! Also, tut tut not using the ring road correctly. Tbf you *mostly* used it correctly (keep right at all times unless exiting), but I did spot you move left occasionally for seemingly no reason. I can forgive you not knowing that, being an out-of-towner and all. Not that the overhead signs don't already (sort of) tell you how to use it properly, that is 😛

The vast majority of the keep right signs have been taken down, which rather implies the prevailing thought is having people trapped in the outside lane doing laps forever has gone out of the window!
@DJChrisNeon

@@BrynBuck in my defense I only knew about the keep right rule by word of mouth. I had no idea there ever were signs to dictate it. Although I was also told the gantry signs implied you were to keep right if you followed them correctly.

Use it every day. Biggest issue is moving right at junction 4 to let traffic on coming from Leicester. Need to exit J6 station but J4 and J5 (London) on-flow blocks up the left lane which makes it very difficult to exit. If I don’t move over I get honked. My first experience was in a LHD German registered VW Combi van. Impossible to see traffic when filtering on. Generally it’s best to keep right until your junction. Shame lots of drivers don’t. I know some elderly drivers who navigate by going up and down the slip roads and never join the actual ring road.

Just proves you don’t have a clue how to use the ring road or how to drive, he was in the wrong lane then cut across 2 lanes, the white van would never have expected him to do that and was joining the ring perfectly.
