With all the spare parts in my garage I couldn't resist pimping out the Schwinn Axum to see how far we can push this platform.
Note - I may get a commission on some of the links below
Mentioned in this video:
Shimano MT-200 Brakes - amzn.to/2wVdEyy
Schwinn Axum - www.walmart.co...
Megatower protector - shop.santacruz...
Geometry:
Head Tube Angle 67.8 (probably a full degree slacker now due to the longer fork)
Seat Tube Angle 73.5
Hoz Top Tube 645
Seat Tube Length 483
Head Tube Length 115
Chainstay Length 435
Fork Offset 46
Bottom Bracket Drop 67
Stem Length 60
Handlebar width 720
Other details:
Tapered headtube so standard forks should be compatible.
180mm front rotor, 160mm rear.
Internal width of the rims measured close to 30.5(!).
Weighed the following components - Tire 1090g, tubes 70g, front fork 2850g, front wheel 1490g.
Disclaimer - This bike was sent to me from Schwinn but this is not a sponsored video in any way.

@@Rasakson They're good for different things. My ass is reasonably rugged enough that the mild jostling it gets from our roads (and what passes for trails) isn't that serious. It's easier to pedal up a hill, too. Can also fit a full rack and double it as a commuter (or commuter first, have fun in gravel second, which is what I do). However. If you ride REALLY rough level terrain, fast downhill, or jump? Yeah, then full squish makes complete sense.

The only thing that matters on a bike is the frame. Everything else is a wear item. Buying a new good frame alone is normally well over $500. So $400 for a rolling chasis that can carry the newest components on the market...... You really can't beat that.

I think the short answer is price target. Walmart are the ones who set those targets and limitations, and it's up to Schwinn to make it fit however they can. On the Axum, they decided to go with wider tires, narrow-wide chainring, and cable routing holes for a dropper post (also, the $500 version that has that dropper post is now available), so they had to cut corners somewhere else.

The reason this is such a great way to go is a lot of young riders don’t have money to put into a good frame straight away and build a bike, but they most likely have enough to buy a bike like this that gets them out on the trails straight away, then they can slowly save and buy those upgrades. Also there’s nothing better than getting an upgrade putting it on your bike then going out for a test ride to see how much of a difference it makes.

Did a similar thing with my first bike in a similar price bracket, but it was an old used Norco Bigfoot, around 2008 if I've dated it correctly. About the only good part on it when I bought it was a 160mm Fox Talas from around 2015. Bought new breaks, bars, stem, and my buddy was gracious enough to gift me a spare Shimano XTR 1x10 from his old bike to finish it off, and the old girl feels incredible now. The bike shop that did the drive train swap and tune up absolutely loved it when they tested it out.

This was a great video man! You showed why that Schwinn was such a good bike at this price point. It has modern, good geometry, and has a bit of upgradability; especially with that tapered headtube. Most people will not put a Fox fork on it but having the ability to put on one is really nice for someone who got hooked and is savvy enough to find used or close out parts like a decent Suntour or Manitou fork. I would personally buy one for my friends who want to ride and donate older parts I’ve upgraded on my other bikes. But I am definitely recommending this bike to new people to the sport. Just need to figure out a cheap rear derailleur solution.

Thanks that was the point of the video. The fun factor went through the roof with the fork and brakes. A more budget fork like a Suntour or Rockshox Reba is more appropriate for a bike like this.

@@mtbsavant5414 exactly. I have the AL Comp (which is basically this, with a 3x and 27.5" tires), and basically bought it with the intention to swap to one of the nicer Suntour forks some point. I’ve got the dropper model on the way (I think I got the last one currently in stock) along with WAY more upgrades then perhaps I should, however the debate surrounding should you upgrade right away or put that extra money into a more expensive bike to start with seems somewhat subjective to me. I started riding about a year ago using my 16 year old 26” full suspension Mongoose which was around three hundred dollars back in the day but certainly lacking by today’s standards. I put a couple hundred into it replacing nearly everything from top to bottom bracket and had an absolute BLAST fixing it up learning a great deal along the way and it turned in to a pretty decent bike. At age 55 this could very well be the last bike I purchase so I intend turning this in to a project bike right out of the box.

I’d recommend someone starting out spend $700-$800 range and buy a better mountain bike to begin with. Like the Vitus Nucleus- $749.99 which comes with a 11 x 46 Deore Drivetrain and better everything else. Why? Because a beginner can go ride it hard immediately with no immediate upgrades. For a beginner one of the most common things is to get discouraged and give up on the sport bc the bike makes riding not fun- kinda how the Schwinn is as purchased if you push it. And if it needs upgrades, then you have to consider costs, because a beginner will not likely have the parts lying around. So by time someone bought those upgrades, and then probably paid someone to put them on, they’ve already spent more than the Vitus and still have a crappy drivetrain. Look I get it, if that is absolutely all you can afford, get the Schwinn and upgrade later. But if you can swing $450 more, get the Vitus or something similar- they are out there. Some things are worth paying for.

shwndh exactly. They get to give the sport a better chance of success with a better bike. And if it doesn’t work they get some of that money back (probably 50%) and someone else gets a sweet rig at a good price. Or they could find someone else’s sweet used rig.

I just bought a £350 own-brand bike from halfords (outdoor equipment store in the uk) and it's quite similar to this. It's already got hydraulic disc brakes, it's got tubeless ready tires, and nice comfy grips. I was already half thinking about upgrading the forks (suntour xcm 100mm) since they have a nice warning sticker saying not to use them on downhill trails lol. It’d be interesting to see a more budget oriented upgrade build, like an SR Suntour fork with QR, and maybe swapping the calipers for Avid mechanicals.

@oklahotb3217 4 жыл бұрын
The 120 mm Suntour Epixon is on amazon for $170 ish, the brakes he used are $56 which are cheaper than the good Avid mechanicals so you are at about $230 for parts and $630 over all for a substantial difference in weight and performance. The dropped chains are an annoyance but being able to stop easily and not get beaten to death from a bad fork are priorities lol

@@oklahotb3217 Ah, I didn't check the price on the shimano brakes. The youtube app was messing up and I didn't want it to eat the comment I was in the middle of composing. It's possible that the Avid brakes might be easier for a novice to install though vs messing with ferrules and mineral oil.

@@Nicoya That's a fair point in regards to shortening brake lines on hydros but it think even adding the labor cost of having a shop do it would still be equal or less than the price of the Avids. I was surprised at how much they cost personally. I've never looked into mechanicals before.

@@mtbsavant5414 I think our shop would only charge about 15 to 20 bucks to shorten the hoses so I dont think that is too bad. You'd be into the bike for about $650 or so. Add the Advent drive train for another $135 and you are at $785. I don't think that's too bad of a deal. My Diamondbacks line was $750 new and its specs aren't as good as what I've outlined above. I think this bike does have some potential especially if you've got some parts laying around. I have some parts but I'm getting ready to do a build so I don't have the $ to do a project with this bike so I'm going to live vicariously through you :)

I couldn’t find an Axum in stock anywhere, so I wound up buying a Schwinn Boundary for my gf. Gave $250 for the bike and all the rest was spare parts I had taken off of previous bikes. I upgraded it with a shorter stem, Odi grips, Shimano mt420 4 piston brakes, 180/160 Sram rotors, and a KS dropper. My only complaint is the fork. But it’s right there with a Trek Marlin 7 for 1/3rd the price. The Boundary actually has a clutched derailleur, idk how that didn’t make it on the Axum.

Zero frame size choices will be a deal breaker for many of us. I need an XL or XXL. Some need a small or x small. I have tried to compensate with stems, bars, seats, seat posts to no avail.
