Also known as Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Bad Dream in EU when it was first released. Treasure made this one so you know it's good, it's just kinda limited. Not much else here to do, but it was made for a handheld so ehhh what can ya do.

I've really been wanting Tiny Toon Adventures games to get the TMNT: Cowabunga Collection treatment. I feel like it's easily possible unless Warner set the price too high for re-licensing the TTA games to be worth it.

I do think Tiny Toons was doing very well in syndication reruns on Nickelodeon or something. I know it was still kinda sorta relevant around the 00s. They did put out some PlayStation games (that we’re awful) yeah, this really was an out of nowhere release for the GBA. The fact it was supposed to be out three years earlier. It wasn’t released until 2005 is really crazy.

GBA visuals still look great. There's a real charm to this console that really hasn't been recaptured. I mean I love my 3DS but I have a particular fondness for the Advance. It's definitely worth it to play these games on an actual GBA. Playing it on a smartphone with the color correction option is still good, but there's something very unique about that non backlit screen that brings those games to life, much like a CRT. The Pokemon Trading Card Game and Star Ocean are examples of GBC color games that shine on original hardware.

Last of the sprites-or-bust consoles, really. Lots of colours, the art form was decades old so people know how to make sprites and animations look good. And they’re all really vibrant with good contrast to make up for the rather mediocre screen.

not necessarily, games w/ licenses past their prime were being released since the NES. and technically the game was launched early in the GBA life span, as GBA dropped in 2001, game released in 2002 (EU). Us getting it later by some random publisher (i checked their wiki page, and they published a lot of random, no name titles for different consoles), just means it was cheap enough for'em

Yeah I had this. It gets old fast and best played in short bursts. Ain't a patch on Konami's Buster Busts Loose from a decade before even graphically but it's ok. It just feels like they kinda got bored developing the game and much of it feels very half-hearted. Like it was simply an engine built for Astro Boy and used Tiny Toons as the prototype... Astro Boy has a LOT more effort and passion put into it.

Good review! I don't think I ever even knew about this game. I have to say the art looks really good on the GBA! The cutscene images look ripped straight out of the cartoon! It is too bad the gameplay is so repetitive. I would have loved to have a GBA game similar to Buster's Hidden Treasure (Genesis) or Buster Busts Loose (SNES) that more falls in line of a traditional 2D platformer.

So I ended up finding this game at a Rite Aid of all places back around I think 2009-2010 it was $15 and worth every dime. Similar to how sometime in the 2010s I ran into a copy of veiwtiful Joe 2 for the PS2 rotting away on the shelves of another Rite Aid. As much as that place sells crap you can find some true treasures or at least you could get back in the day.

I have a funny story involving this game. About five years ago, I saw an obvious bootleg copy of Tiny Toon Adventures: Scary Dreams (under the overseas Buster’s Bad Dreams subtitle despite having an ESRB rating) at a pawn shop. I’ve never heard of the game so I looked it up on my phone and read up on it’s peculiarly quiet North American release. While I didn’t buy the bootleg that very day, I eventually caved and got it for $5. It’s the only bootleg I have in my entire game collection (that I know of) but, with a game this rare, there was no way I was going to get a legitimate copy anytime soon. Not for cheap, anyway. One year later, I come across a bunch of quality GBA games for $2.50 - $3 each. Games like Pokémon Sapphire, Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, two different Super Mario Advance titles (1 & 4, if you care) and, you’ve guessed it, Scary Dreams. Yeah I got a legitimate copy of Scary Dreams that day and it cost me HALF the price of the bootleg! Now I have this ugly looking bootleg cart in my collection for no reason. That’ll learn me for self doubting my luck. 😅

I find the fact that they released so many Tiny Toon Adventures and a couple Animaniacs games well after the shows left production. Usually, it's either the hot new thing or something that's been around for decades and has a classics following that get games. Neither show was young enough to still be in production or regular rerun airings nor were they old enough to be considered nostalgic and it would be another 2 decades before either had a revival. I appreciate the hell out of WB and game developers still wanted to do things with the licenses, don't get me wrong. It's just weird that those were made then. Anyway, I played this, and it's not a bad game, but it's one of those obnoxious styles of Beat 'em ups where the wave after wave of constant enemy attacks gets excessive, repetitive, and just plain tedious. Plus the bosses take way too many hits. But most of them are references to other episodes, mostly "How I Spent my Summer Vacation," so at least it makes the most of the license.

@@macuser7048 They don't tend to merchandise anything that isn't in production until it's considered retro. Expecting a TTA video game when the show is no longer commercially relevant would be like expecting a full TTA toyline at the same time. I know there was some obscure Wendy's kid's meal promotion in the late 90's or so when the cartoons were being rerun on Kid's WB as part of some package show, but the next merch featuring the characters would be a retro Kidrobot blind box line.

I am curious on how well this did back then both here and in Europe. by 2002 and def. by 2005, TT wasn't really in the zeitgeist anymore (i guess you could argue even more about Astroboy, and they released that later on). The HUD makes it look like a fighting game...that could be a fun premise too..

I was wondering why this game had a weird release, because you cannot find this listed in Treasure’s official website. This game was developed at a time when Treasure was focused on licensed games, both as an exercise of their style, and trying new, innovative ideas to put in their future works. But there is more to the story behind this game, the early 2000s was rough to them, as a few of their works were either really negative like Silpheed: lost planet, or controversial like Ikaruga (Before it got acclaimed by the Xbox re-release). Eventually they recovered with Gradius V, Omega Factor, and Wario world, but at this point they were in a testing period of adapting their style with the times. If you do plan to finish the Treasure GBA games, there’s Hajime no Ippo, Guardian Heroes Advance, and Gunstar Super Heroes. The last two are notable for playing nothing like their originals, and even borrowing ideas between each other (Superheroes has a stronger story, Advance is a linear action game), and I can go even further to say Ubisoft did a poor job translating Guardian Heroes Advance, so that’s a fair warning if you do visit the game.

The best IMO would either be ISS Deluxe or PAL exclusive FIFA Road to World Cup 98. Probs ISS Deluxe, though. Yo, a game made in 2002 for a show that debuted in 1990.

It's amazing so many games were made for such a length of time for a cartoon whose original run lasted, what? Two seasons?

The original show plus my summer vacation “movie” I feel like are iconic. The animation was so good, and it was mostly had a fairly timeless feel to it. That’s more than I can say about the new cartoon that thing looks like crap.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Not to mention, the Looniversity reboot has a change nobody asked for and even Tom Ruegger himself hates, making Babs and Buster Bunny, who were an unrelated couple in the 1990 series (No relation!), twin siblings.

Pausing at 2:20 to say: This Tiny Toons game looks like it's based on the work Treasure did for their game Astro Boy: Omega Factor. EDIT: Turns out it was the other way around lol

i still had the game as a kid but its just pirated and kinda scuffed in first level when the football players always freezes the game. Whats even funny when i had this bootleg copy, it took the movie poster of Looney Tunes Back in Action and thought it might be a Looney Tunes games on GBA. but nope its Tiny Toons and they're game title was just Tiny Toons 2 on the front. But on the back, they use the screenshots of Tiny Toons Busters bust loose. i didnt have it on the box but i had the game cart. And this was basically the first time i discovered tiny toons since i watched on YT with 7 watching some cutscenes. even the NES and Snes games. i also watched few of the reboot. it was neat, yeah the sibling part is a very questionable thing but atleast it wasnt as bad as i thought. sure the catchphrase of no relation is missing and doesnt feel original, but to me the show wasnt really a big part to me to buster and babs falling in love. Of course it sounds extremly nasty to hear that but yeah i undeestand why people miss that way. i could probably think they try to put more character dynamics like wirh the ducktales reboot. Its more a controversial part, but hey, Montana Max and Elmyra are there in the reboot. i'll say, Tiny Toons Looniversity was decent atleast, not groundbreaking but i enjoyed. and also the game of course but Astro Boy Omega Factor is way better but its pricey to get the OG copy.
