Today we’re taking a look at the movie Tombstone and it’s real life versions of some of the films most iconic moments. Was Tombstone historically accurate? Let’s find out.

I had the opportunity to visit the movie site. The only reason that the Birdcage is seen at an angle in the movie is that a facade for the Birdcage was built to cover a shed at the site. The actual interior was built in another building on the site. It was actually smaller than it looks in the movie.

I was not trying to make a novel of my comments so I am creating a second one lol. Another point is that in most these mining towns or cattle towns. it was very hard for anyone in Law enforcement to be successful and this was certainly the case in Tombstone. The business owners love the cowboys because they would come into town and spend their money, but when they would get too rowdy, the business owners would cry for law and order, they would then hire someone for town Marshall and that Marshal would have support for a time. Then when the Cowboys would start to stay away because they couldn't get away with things in town, the business owners would turn against the Marshall because they wanted them back to again score huge profits. It was a vicious cycle and one the Earp's found themselves in with town support fading for them. Another trigger point for the feud with Behan and Wyatt, was the election for Sheriff, Behan promised Wyatt, that if he dropped out of the race, he would appoint him his Deputy and they would share in the profits of the town. Wyatt did drop out and Behan didn't fulfill his promise and appointed someone else as Deputy. This was a strong source of tension between Wyatt and Behan and would never get resolved.

A few Tombstone historians believe Wyatt's house was located on the south side of Fremont next to his brother Virgil's house....the confusion today exists because Wyatt owned the lot on the north side of Fremont where the replica house is today.

I read that as well. It seems he may have rented out that house for extra money. There doesn’t seem to be much consistency in the many accounts. But it sure is interesting.

Good video and breakdown. There are so many different accounts of these events it is hard to know for sure what is accurate or not. I think your points are pretty good. I have read a lot of things on this too from numerous books and watching many historical videos. One thing about Ike Clanton, the movie portrays him as kind of a coward, but in actuality he was the main ranch owner of the area. He was considered the leader of the cattle rustlers, which was comprised of Wild Bill and Johnny Ringo. and called most of the shots for the group. Most of the cowboys were cattle thieves and would steal cattle and deliver them to the Clanton ranch where they would then sell them off into Mexico. Also the trial you mentioned is true, and one thing that isn't mentioned often is that the MClaury's and Clanton's were very popular, due to the cattle business I mentioned, and the funeral procession had the largest in attendance in the history of the area at the time. There was a cousin or brother of the MClaury's who was a very rich lawyer from San Francisco. He came into town to prosecute the Earp's and he almost succeeded due to a very methodical prosecution that was not normal for the area before, but Ike Clanton ruined it with his testimony. He was over confident and very brash and made false comments and his testimony turned the trial in favor of the Earp's. But before Ike's testimony it was looking really bad for the Earp's.

A single action revolver will not fire if it it is “half-cocked.” There are four positions on the hammer as it is cocked. They are supposed to spell “C-O-L-T.” When the gun is half-cocked, or on the second position, the cylinder can be spun freely and the gun can be loaded or unloaded, but it cannot be fired. It is true that everyone thought the shooting of Marshall White was accidental, but the gun would have to be fully cocked for it be fired, even accidentally.

The picture of Fatima has been in different locations through history. In my book "Haunted Tombstone", I have photos of the painting behind the stage and on the back of the partition facing the stage. Another interesting fact is that many of the holes in the ceiling come from erecting supports for the "human fly" production put on at the theater. This accounted for at least one death when one of the girls performing the walk across the ceiling failed to lock in her shoe properly and fell to her death.

I remember that movie bro I had it and probably watched it 20 times i always liked that movie better than the one with Kevin Costner but that's a damn good movie too of course the one with Kevin Costner is more about Wyatt Earp's life. Tombstone has always been one of my favorite towns to visit even though it's so little, it just has a certain feel to it I don't know why sometimes I think I live there back in the past.

And finally, one last small point, In regard to news, Mayor Clum was a friend and owner of the Epitaph, So the OK Corral shooting account in the Epitaph was very one sided in favor of the Earp's, but most of the other news sources in the region were supportive of the businesses and cowboys, so if you find other news sources related to the shooting in Tombstone, you will find it is very different than the Epitaph version and is very against the Earp's. There was a lot of politics behind the events of Tombstone...

Wyatt likely didn't shoot Johnny Ringo, his supposed confession came from a now debunked book alleged to be written by his wife. At the time of Ringo's death Wyatt was believed to be in Colorado like Doc, and he was wanted in Arizona for murder and there is no historical evidence Wyatt returned to Tombstone. Its unlikely he would have risked returning just to hunt down Ringo, as it wasn't even clear if Wyatt believed he was even in on Morgan's murder, which was the main reason for the vendetta ride. It is in fact historically unclear if Ringo was even directly involved with Morgan's murder. Tombstone was fairly accurate up until after the Iron Springs shootout with Curly Bill which did happen even if it was somewhat embellished in the movie. Everything that happened afterward in the movie was pretty much rubbish. Wyatt and the others fled to Colorado soon as they got all the Cowboys believed responsible for Morgan's death, they didn't stay and wipe out Behen's entire posse like depicted. And its unlikely Wyatt returned. Ringo likely either committed suicide or was gunned down by Bucksin Frank Leslie.

@@Desert.Sky.Adventures to be clear, I'm not saying definitively Wyatt didn't do it, just that its unlikely he did based on the timelines and circumstances. The Earp vendetta ride ended in April 1882 and they all fled to Colorado because they were wanted for killing Frank Stillwell and a couple of others, and Ringo was not killed until the following July, three months after they fled. Stillwell in fact was believed to be the actual triggerman in Morgan's death, and its reasonable to think Curley Bill may have masterminded the murder. The problem is the Cowboys and Clanton faction were not as tight knit a group in real life as depicted in the movie so its hard to say how many people were actually involved in Morgan's murder. I think Ringo is believed to have been involved, but its hard to say for certain since as far as I know no one ever confessed to Morgan's murder. But its not clear if Wyatt believed he was, though he probably suspected it. But whether he believed it strongly enough to risk returning to Arizona when he was wanted there is less clear. I'd wager he probably didn't.

Regarding the shooting of Fred White, there was also bad blood between Wyatt and Ike Clanton. Wyatt was running for sheriff, and thought it would help his chances if he could bring in some stagecoach robbers who killed a man during a robbery. Wyatt made a deal with Ike; if Ike would rat out the robbers, Wyatt would give Ike the reward money, and he would get the glory, and win the election. The robbers ended up being killed elsewhere, so the deal sort of fell through. As time went by, Ike became more and more paranoid that Wyatt would let their secret out, which would likely have gotten Ike killed by his own friends. Also, IIRC, there was a matter of Ike being in possession of stolen a stolen horse that belonged to Wyatt. It seems that even if White had not been killed, the two sides were headed for trouble.

There is at least one instance of Sheriff Behan telling the Town Sheriff that an event in the town was not a County matter. That is probably why he didn't get involved in the gunfight.

I don't know how Ike got to live at the ok corral and by running up to Wyatt and yelling "Wyatt I ain't armed he probably save Wyatt by accident the cowboys wouldn't risk firing at Wyatt when Ike was in front , When Ike and I think Frank Stillwell at the train station Wyatt spotted two men on the top of the train and one was Ike he did a runner and Stillwell was shot to pieces ,But how Ike survived those years after been one of the cowboys was openly saying I'm gonna kill me an Earp .As an outside looking in from Dublin Ire. The story of Doc and Wyatt and the gunfight and vendetta is my favourite part ,after this It would be the Young Guns movies about "Billy the Kid " and the Lincoln county war and the hunt for him. There are others I love but these ones on Tombstone and the Earp's and Wyatt's friendship with Doc, Doc also liked Morgan and Morgan got along with Doc I know the cowboys would avenge and when Morgan was ambushed chaos broke out the Earp vendetta ride Wyatt and Doc headed out with a posse and finished it then left. For Wyatt being a great Lawman and gunslinger he never seemed to find what he was looking for.

Your video Dave is interesting good parts & bad too. My friend in Payson is a Arizona Historian author researcher. Because so many writers, he doesn’t want to write about Earps or Tombstone. He knows good authors one in which he recommends “ Helldorado bring the Law to the Mesquite by W. M. Breakenridge”. Highly recommend reading as he was lawman in Tombstone at that time. The book is a autobiography but gives account of the OK Corral as he was there. His name mentioning movie couple time. You are correct no red sashes, and gun pointed at head is for movie. -Kid Yuma

It wasn't that historically accurate as movies go. I love the film and I love Wyatt Earp as well. It too made errors. As you said the red sashes did not occur. They just like they were. Cowboys. Wyatt didn't carry a Buntline Special. Nor did he wear an ankle length coat at the gunfight. All four were dressed alike as witnesses said. All in black, frock coats, vests, slacks. Morgan was portrayed as inexperienced as a lawman. He was very experienced and was good with a gun. The Wyatt Earp movie portrayed him dead on.

Very well done. You have to take any historical movie that comes out of Hollywood with a grain of salt. They tend to embellish and dramatize everything for cinematic purposes. Watch the movie then read all the books and newspaper reports you can find to see what really happened. In the case of the gunfight and it's aftermath I found a book on the court testimony very interesting.
