Authorities in Venezuela say 95% of voters have supported the country's claim to Essequibo, a disputed, oil- and mineral-rich part of neighboring Guyana. It is not clear how the government will act on this outcome, but the vote has raised concern in Guyana.

Yes, it's definitely a distraction, but it is also about keeping Venezuela relevant on the world stage. Its standard political distraction. When your economy is in the gutter and you have no way out of it - start a war. Go look at why the Argentinians invaded the Falklands. Hi im Trinidadian. Guyana is a nation linguistically, culturally and demographically very similar to our island. I've been there many times. Trinidad is also extremely close and was once connected with land between Venezuela, with a lot of Venezuelans flocking to our small island to find a better life from their government, and this is responsible for causing a lot of controversy in recent years. Its so outrageous how the Venezuelan government want to occupy the protected land of Essequibo to exploit it of oil and minerals despite it having no historical ties to the people here. This is a very strange argument. Venezuela is claiming that they own this land based on old colonial claims. Hundreds of years ago, Spain made vast and often ill defined claims to large chunks of land in South America. As time progressed, the colonial powers signed treaties with each other establishing the current status quo. But, Venezuela doesn't want to acknowledge later treaties, and they are instead insisting that Spain's earliest land claims should take priority. What is the moral argument they are making? Are they staunch supporters of early colonial Spain? If they are so loyal to Spain, why wouldn't they acknowledge Spain's later treaties? Ethically, shouldn't any such disputes be settled with a referendum by the people of the Essequibo region?
