Financial troubles in Dolton, Illinois, continue to mount as village officials struggle to pay their bills. Despite cutting checks, vendors remain unpaid, leading to legal actions that have frozen $440,000 in village funds. Trustee Tammy Brown highlighted the village's inconsistent payments, while attorney Pat Walsh criticized the mayor for prioritizing personal expenses over village obligations. Walsh's client, former detective David Graham, won a whistleblower lawsuit, resulting in a $220,000 settlement which remains unpaid. The situation underscores the ongoing fiscal mismanagement within Dolton's administration, leaving residents to bear the brunt of these failures. The next court hearing is scheduled for July 23.

I doubt it. They have bonds outstanding, and if they have broken those covenants those bonds are due immediately. At a certain point it wouldn't make sense to try they might file for bankruptcy and seek a state takeover. That is never good and all those pensions might get wiped out in the process

Don’t pay any invoices for no bid, no contract vendors. Have the attorney send a letter to each vendor to inform them the mayor circumvented the Request for Proposals process and there is no approved contract for the vendor.

I've been a CPA for 20 years in governmental accounting. I'm just now hearing about this so I'm new. I've seen some really really messed up government entities and books, but none them are even a 1\10 this bad. The entire town might be insolvent, and that would require a state takeover. I've only seen that once and it sucks really bad

If this was going down in Florida, DeSantis would have fired her a long time ago and done a full investigation charging whoever needs to he charged. 23000 people live in dolton with the Per capita income of $22,000 the tax revenue has to be very low. The math is not mathing. I don’t understand how they can make payroll

The city generates 11m a year in taxes, that's about half of there total revenue. 45% of that is from property taxes, and the other big chunk is 11% from sales taxes. This all comes from the last audited CAFR Which was in 2021...

The standard dem solution should work and perfectly rectify the money shortages. Just raise taxes!!!!!!!!!! The trustees should pass it 100% as always in dem supermajorities. Raise *all* local tax/fees by 1000% and the local sales tax on food (non-tobacco and liquor AKA sin tax) by 700% and all sin tax items by 2,500%. Once all this new money is coming in all should be well. This is the standard dem solution, just raise taxes!!!!!!!!
