As a goth, the whole "fashion vs music" debate is just as familiar as it is exausting. Also, the bands not wanting to say they are V-Kei. Funny how the subcultures have similar issues.

It really does come down to whether or not you wanna stick to the origins of a subculture and be a purist in that sense, or just roll with the punches and how a style evolves over time. As a fellow goth, I agree that it does get confusing and exhausting :') I joined the community about a year or 2 ago and mannn figuring it all out was mentally taxing.

while exhausting the answer (at least when it comes to the goth subcluture) is that its a music based subculture, meaning companies labeling every black edgy piece of clothing with name of "goth" gets really annoying. alternative is fine but don't call something it isn't. the beauty of goth is that you can wear anything, do any makeup style etc etc because none of it really matters as long as you listen to the music (yes in recent years there is like a standard "look/aesthetic" when it comes to goth) even if you don't fit into the box of what a goth "should" look like all that matters is that you listen to the music. you can wear gothic adjacne tstyles and not even be "goth" in the music based sense that's fine, jus don't call yourself something you're not, alternative is a perfectly good term. it was really alienating first joining the scene because i didnt look like all the other goth youtubers/personalities i watched and didnt have the same clothes, nor the make up skills (im black, queer and disbaled) and it jus made me feel super shitty about myself cause i felt i could never be "goth enough" but then i realized hey i only need to listen to the music and can dress however i want and not dress in this commodified idea of what corporations think goth is (my defualt was black to begin with but it was basic blacks like band hoodies and sweats/pajama pants not the skirts or the dresses or the elaborate tops/bottoms) it was so so so relieving, now idc if anyone says i dont look "goth" enough cause they're jus being superficial goth is about the music, always has always will be smh also goth doesnt equal darkly inclicned !! you can be darkly inclined without being a goth at all. besides now that im not worried about the tediousness of "goth" fashion i can focus on actual fashion based subcultures like decora which i really like aesthetically but im not sure i can pull off myself or even be comfortbale wearing it 😅

Yes. They did. Starting around Early 2006, Hot Topic stocked Dir en grey CDs and Shirts. Then they started to do USA Tours. They did Family Values Tour with KoRn. Later around 2007 they did a tour with Deftones. 2010 they did a tour with Apocalyptica. After DeG's popularity exploded -- other bands like MUCC and The GazettE tried to jump on board. "Let's try this -- sign with a U.S. label and sell re-releases of our albums in Hot Topic." There was so much stuff -- not just Music & Shirts, but Magazines too. Hot Topic sold the Shoxx & Cure magazines which were entirely in Japanese, but had cool pictures. Then there were english print magazines like Purple Sky Magazine & Five-For Magazine. Those were the only two VK magazines made for an english speaking audience. Sadly, around 2010 or 2011, the hype died down. Korean Pop took over as the "Hot Trendy Thing" here in the USA... I don't understand why though. KPop is basically just Backstreet Boys or Nsync, but in Korean lyrics..... No edge. No danger. Just cute guys copying Nsync & BSB, lol.....

I was all about visual kei back in the 2000s. When I saw Malice Mizer I was like wow and for me the music was first but of course the fashion was very important. I’m always happy for more exposure about visual kei. Just awesome.

I always felt like the style and music werr connected and couldn't exist without ech other. And from the style side: I see vkei as a concept thing. You have the basics like direction for hair, makeup and shapes, the whole genderthing and you just do what you wanna do in this style

As a visual kei person I think that the fashion and the music are both very important and they kind of work side by side. Also there are many sub-genres of visual kei: iryou kei which uses medical themes (band example: +ISOLATION), oshare kei which is very colourful and inspired by the scene aesthetic (band example: An Cafe), tanbi kei which is inspired by rococo and Victorian fashion (band example: Malice Mizer) and many more. Personally I am tanbi kei and my wish is TO BE ABLE TO DRESS LOLITA AND VKEI ONE DAY AND TO MEET MANA SAMA AND OTHER VKEI IDOLS.

I think tik tok just has a lot of misinformation, and because people label anything as “vkei” it muddles what vkei actually is. That is why I don’t like tik tok, especially because it’s the same case with gyaru. A lot of the new fans have more problematic behavior towards bandmen, and even attack other fans that have been in the scene longer. I’ve been a fan for around 4 years I think? But I tend to stay away from things like vkei twt and such for the same reason, it just has started to become toxic. Similar to kpop and the direction people have started going towards has just changed. Before people were just more welcoming and everyone got along better but now you can’t say anything without getting attacked for having a different opinion. I will always love the music and artists though, even though I consider myself a goth etc. I will always love vkei the most, j-fashion for da win

I produce visual Kei style music. A main distinction I like to point out is: The music has well placed melody and harmony. Includes brilliant orchestration an unique tones The outfits are ' classy' and well thought out The Hairstyles are generally uniquely Japanese . A relative anime character vibe.

I have a few points to add. If you ask Japanese people what is visual kei, they call it just a (stage) fashionstyle but don't really see it as a music genre. Overseas people do feel more its a mix of both. And somehow vkei bands cannot really explain what they can explain with vkei and not with other genres. and I believe lately nobody really called it a culture yet. I've interviewed a bunch of bands, which make it feel they just wear this style to get attention of people and not really as devoiting themselfs to vkei culture as it was in the past. So it changes over time for sure. But a vkei bandguy also once said, vkei is telling people a fake fantasy a dream while rock is showing your trueself. (a bandman who was active in both genres But of course there are still bands who totally take it seriously. But lots of vkei bandman don't even wear any vkei looking clothes off stage but dress totally hiphop or other normal casual clothes in their dailylife 😄 for them vkei is just a stage fashion but not really something what they care much in their daily life. But overseas we also love to label bands vkei who don't feel they are vkei or never were called vkei in the past at all. So its also kind of personal when you feel something is vkei. older bandguys hate to be called vkei nowadays because the younger generation doesn't really care to deliver good music beside looking good🤨 So some who where clearly vkei get frustrated if you still label them as vkei. They don't wanna be seen as cheap host looking guys 😂 And no, Shazna made vkei popular and accepted it was not MANA. and no bands didn't feel too good for vkei but their labels forced them to cut them out of vkei, because vkei wasn't accepted mainstreamly at all. Bands got canceled for looking wild. So to be more popular or being sighned to a bigger label they had to drop their vkei style. which is sad. And this was same for glam bands they has a hard time to be even accepted. read my interviews with Tomonori Nagasawa Akima Tsuneo (Rama Amoeba, ex-Marchosias Vamp) silver rose To discover more about how things really were in the past. and of course all other bands who tell what vkei is for them and why they are amazing. The rest I do agree with 😊 Was really good content about vkei the best so far 😊 and yes there is no correct way of dressing vkei... it changes a lot of well, so just dress how you wanna express yourself. and jrockone is a forum where you cannot have a different opinion about things than the staff, I really thought they were good online friends, but after all they...

Thank you so much for your insights! I've also been into visual kei since I was a teenager (like 15 years ago) and had the opportunity to work with some related bands at some point as well. And what you mentioned is something I've also noticed in the vkei scene as well. At the beginning with bands like X, Luna Sea, Dir en Grey, An Café or the GazettE, there was a commitment to the whole experience (from music to looks) it was the whole fantasy at stage. But during recent years I've seen more and more cases of bands that get into the scene because it's an easy way to get girls and money. So they don't care about music at all, but to sell their looks to get as much as they can. Which is really sad. Probably it's been like that for a long time, but now it's more known how much they try to profit, even in illegal ways. And something that I think it's good to mention, it's that vkei is not a genre and bands not necessarily box themselves in western terms. I always remember this radio interview to the GazettE where they were told in Latinoamerica they're a popular metal band, and they said they it's was an honor to be considered a metal band, because they never consider themselves like that. Being considered a metal band would be being a band like Metallica or so, and they didn't feel they were at that level. Plus, the GazettE doesn't only play metal, they experiment with many genres from electro to ballads, just like many other bands. Another fun fact they didn't mention is the fan culture in vkei bands. I can speak as a Heresy, a fan of the Gazette who used to pay for their membreship. Because to be an official fan you used to have to pay a 100+ dollars membreship which allowed you to have benefits, like special sales, presents on birthdays or christmas, first row in concerts or private concerts for fans only. That's also why people is so restrictive of their events and filming is not allowed. Because people were literally paying annually to have the exclusivity to be there. And copyright! That's why vkei bands used to released short versions of they music videos. We had to buy the albums to be able to watch it complete. PS. It surprised me that nobody mentioned OG bands like Visual Scandal, Psycho le Cemu or Lareine. I still remeber when I was younger, everyone would try to learn as much as they could about the origins. And there were forums to collect super old information, music and translate blogs. Some people would even go to Japan to bring stuff and we would have meet ups just to enjoy music and learn together. Good times~ ;;

@@reilaless Most people don't even know Visual Scandal...And they don't even know they even were active before Hide even was active as bandman and started to use the word Visual. Also around that time the word Visual seemed to be popular. There were so many visual looking band around that time but since the owner of the shoxx magazine was a xjapan fan, they received all credits. While shoxx magazine was original born to report about various visual looking bands. But its really hard to get some info from the 80ties around the rock and metal music of that time. Lots of good sites died and somehow bandman don't really care to talk about that time much anymore or just can't in public. But in the past bandman also started bands to have fun with their fans. Only most of them didn't really care much about Money and blingbling yet. Nowadays I also believe that there are a bunch working as a host, model, expensive/exclusive bar barman or something similar. At least I see enough photos which background looks clearly like a hostclub or so 😄 or they invite their fans to come to a bar on hostclub times. Or if you see them showing off their bling bling. sure it can be fan gifts, but then still caring about expensive brand stuff and showing them proudly, makes me just feel they aren't that serious about music.

Remember when Dir en grey was like -- "Hey, don't call us VK, we're a Metal Band now!" Lol. They were trying so hard to appeal to the Hyper Masculine "Bro Metal" dudes, when most of their fanbase was Female. And then Kyo went on to form Sukekiyo which is such a blatantly VK band... Make up your mind, Kyo!

I think the keyword you were all missing about Visual Kei is that it's a "subculture". From what I read, it started as a sort of counter culture to what was popular in Japan at the time with the first few crop of bands wanting to do something different that wasn't being done much which was the rock/metal sound that was popular in the West at the time which was the Hard Rock bands that were shared above (Motley Crue, Kiss, etc.). So I would say that it was a music-based scene that also played in tangent with a certain look which was not strictly defined since as shared, many of the bands had different visual looks among themselves but the sound was still more or less hard rock and/or heavy metal in instrumentation.

I loved visual kei for around 11 years, kote kei is my favorite both music and aesthetic wise I feel 90s and early 2000s was the best era for visual kei. I also experiment with the fashion sometimes since 2014 although its not my daily look...I always felt its abit of both that visual kei fashion could not exist without the music and the music could not exist without the fashion either way I love it and wish it had a bigger following again haha

finally, vkei video. wish you had links to were to buy vkei. Visual Kei started as a music thing. Visual being the American equivalent of shock rock. hence the 'visual'. Sad they didn't bring this up. It start as a music genre with Japan X. But the rest has evolved from that. Like, I get yall talk about it but its also important as to what 'vkei is' Its deffinately a music thing to say the least. but also a fashion thing.

Absolutely! Sometimes we might miss some stuff and since this is more of a group discussion, feel free to share any information that you have about that. Sometimes if I do extra research while editing a video and we didn't explicitly talk about it during recording, I try add it in to the video with pictures as visual pointers. Also we've got the brand suggestions for where to buy clothing for v-kei around the end portion but I'll try to add links in the description to them. Maybe in the future I'll think of doing a part two to this as there is a lot to v-kei but for now, I like @VKOneeSan's videos. visual kei did start as a fashion look. and still many bandman see it just as a fashion look. also xjapan is just one of the early bands who dressed visual and the word visual only was taken from them because the owner of shoxx magazine was a big xjapan and hide fanboy. there was already a band before hide even started his band activities who called themself "visual scandal" however thanks to xjapan the owner of shoxx magazine became interested in Japanese bands who dressed visual and gave them a place to share their voice in a magazine as well. visual kei wasn't an accepted dresscode until about 1996 but never was really accepted by the mainstream as well, because many bands dropped their visual after they joined a big major label and there aren't many visual bands who currently are signed up to the major companies. and it were the overseas fans who named vkei as a music genre. but at the start it wasn't a music genre at all and xjapan music isn't the biggest inspiration, I hear more similaries of other bands or just hide solo work. which made me also say it was not xjapan who made vkei popular but way more Hide plus a bunch of other great bands people simply forget about.

I loves the video! I was really into VK the last decade (2011-2020), I didn't wore the fashion but I loved the music, especially the GazettE, X Japan and hide's solo project (R.I.P.). What made me step away were the toxic fans, I couldn't stand it anymore. When there were rumors about some band member having a girlfriend or getting married, there was such a huge outcry on social media.🤣Like 1. it's just a rumor and 2. you will never marry them anyway let alone meeting them private in real life, calm down. I still listen to the music but I don't interact with the fandom anymore and I'm not so obsessed with the bands themselves anymore. I stopped reading or watching interviews, buying merch and collecting photo books. I also remember shops with Japanese Products in Germany (specifically CDs,DVDs, magazines, Manga, Anime related products) having some magazines with VK content but when the K-Pop hype began it got all wiped out except for some CDs. Also an Online shop for J-music I regularly bought limited cd/DVD editions and photo books added K-Pop to their shop. I remember being at the Dokomi asking a seller if he has some VK magazines like Rock&Read and he was like "No, I used to but I have some photo books with BTS or Black Pink , do you want that" and I was like "noo, I don't want that". Haha

I love these videos! It's so fascinating to see all of these different perspectives. From how the guests described it, it seems a lot like American alternative cultures! (I mainly think of goth or punk) Everything from the music/style/culture debate to the way that many outsiders don't really care to learn about it. Speaking specifically of punk, since I'm more involved in that scene, it's basically a political movement based on music, which has spawned it's own cultures, ritual, and fashion, to the point that one "punk" may look like a standard businessman, while another goes all out as far as making a fashion statement! It's fascinating how these groups grow and evolve over time :)

It was fashion but it was also a genre. The reality is vk was more than an image, it actually did have a "sound" until the 2000s, contrary to what the American wikipedia article (the source of a lot of people's "knowledge") says about it. Even though different vk eras drew from different genres, there's a clear sonic throughline running through X Japan, to Buck Tick, to Luna Sea, to Kuroyume, Zi:Kill, to Baiser, to early DeG, etc etc. Sparkly, jangy guitars, but not in a Byrds/The Smiths sort of way. Not in a midwest emo sort of way either. Lots of dreamy ethereality. "Out of place" uptempo drum parts. An incredibly distinct way of vocalizing you won't find outside vk. etc etc. At some point this lineage just ended and no new band from that point felt culturally connected to it anymore.

it 100% had a sound. i think of it as a hybrid of post punk/goth rock and glam metal. the jangly guitars are very influenced by the cure

I’ve loved Visual Kei for years it was huge were I grew up in brasil, when I moved to England it wasn’t as popular so It was hard to fit in, and Visual Kei fashion is so hard to come across over here, I started a visual Kei band too and I think we’re the first in the UK , we have looked it up and find nothing to prove us wrong :,) , to me , Visual Kei is anything you want it to be

in France vk was v popular (but still niche) like the huge boom was in the mid 2000's I got to know it through some friends in middle school, and then an acquintance of mine made me discover MALICE MIZER and I became a huge fan! I got the rest of information online :) thanks for including Mana's "lesbian silence" I love this meme XD I've been to a vk concert in Japan and the experience was out of this world it was exactly like the video extracts (I think it was in the same venue as the 1st one), I vaguely knew one choreography and for the rest I followed the people in the front XD I forgot to mention that I was recovering from a fracture so jumping was hard welp

I have been a fan of VK for over 2 decades now and for many who are a part of this subculture this is their life although many Japanese girls ‘graduate‘ around their mid- to late 20s here in Japan. You don’t have to dress VK to be a fan of VK or participate in the subculture that’s what I love about it the most. Although it has its very very difficult aspects like girls giving money to their favorite bandmen and bandguys sometimes basically prostituting themselves, the fight between girls who are fans of the same bands etc its still a subculture that gives a lot of people who thing different a place to call their home and community. it’s a subculture you have to experience in Japan to get a feel of it.

I personally don’t see the issue with translating 系 as “style” or even “core” to use a more modern word. Translation isn’t just about turning a word from one language into another. There are a lot of Japanese words that encompass a broader idea or vision rather than just one word.

slightly unrelated, but i’ve been getting mixed signals about oshare kei and i don’t know where to search for information. is it a substyle of vkei or no? is the fashion worn outside of bands’ stage personas? what’s the history behind oshare kei? so many unanswered questions!

I think that V Kei music is actually very distinctive, it's way more experimental than the western music, it also blends more genres, the same with fashion, it's more experimental and usually leans more towards feminine styles

Sex pot revenge is a big brand. I've also heard of civarize... it's very hard to figure out since v系 is so small outside of Japan. But a lot of clothes from different american and uk brands (things that sell goth/punk... even thrifted clothes) can fit the style or be made to fit the style

The best Visual Kei came along during the 90's until the early 2000's. Lots of new band concepts, musical experimentation, theatrical performance, etc. During the 90's Visual Kei solidified a musical style usually called by fans old school Visual Kei. What goes on in the scene today I can hardly call it Visual Kei. It has lost its charm, uniqueness, spirit, most everything. They play better today, but the music is to me boring, mainstream, they don't stand out anymore, they have nothing different to offer. Aesthetically, Visual Kei went down too, the haurstyles became uglier, sometimes their hair look like someone threw glue onto their hair. They don't say anything aesthetically anymore, I see no reason for them to dress and stylise their hair anymore.

So the white girl is insure about being into a Japanese fashion and goes straight into thinking that people think she's fetishizing? it sounds a bit like self projection
@vninja
@vninja Жыл бұрын
The white girl had quite many occasions during her time in the scene at which people told her that she, or other non japanese people, shouldn't dress like that because it would be a thing for japanese people only and only they would look good in it. When people who said such things would bring up "People that would be a good exaple of non japanese ones that don't ruin the fashion or music" they always just mentioned people from Korea or China etc. Listen to what I say. I did not say that people think I am fetishizing. I said "whenever I hear it, I think: ..." Those who say only asian looking people would be good enough for VK do so in my opinion.

@@vninja oh honey, I’m also white… literally my ancestors come from Germany. If you go straight into thinking that people think your fetishizing that’s on you. That’s your own insecurities showing. The only case I’ve seen of when white girls get called out is when they do yellow face whilst dressing in any fashion style that comes from asia. My mother is a white woman and she married an asian man, not once did she ever get comments that she was “fetishizing” my father. Honey, you wrote me a long paragraph, triggered much? And let’s not forget about how you literally gave yourself a Japanese name but ok

You came at me bc you thought I was a full Asian girl… now that you found out I’m also a white girl you change you energy (which is why I let you know that a wfam baby)… I find that a bit odd… I also find it odd that you completely ignored the fact that I called out the fact that you gave yourself a Japanese name
