Is Whistler Bike Park Good for Beginners?

2022 Whistler bike park season has started! I remember my first time riding at the park and it was not an optimal experience. I was just a beginner rider and I thought this place was hell. However, is that true? I want to think about whether Whistler Bike Park is good for beginners!

My first time at Whistler was after only a few times riding MTB, and it definitely felt over my head. I mostly just lapped EZ all day and my one attempt at Del Boca freaked me out so I bailed back to EZ pretty quick. I'm getting more seriously into MTB this year, and I've booked a Whistler trip for August. Looking forward to trying again.

Ya video is clear, really gives a feel of it. I started with all the green runs you mentioned and moved up to crank It Up and crank It Up C-more. I did do one lesson which helped tremendously. Because riding a downhill bike is different from riding a normal mountain bike and it was nice that you showed it in your video where we can practice how to jump and how to come off a steep one. Thx for this! I'll be back in Whistler for Crankworx in August and I cannot wait to ride the mountain bike park again

Whistler can be fun, but the ego-mania and the insecurity of people there has not changed in 10 years. People there need to loosen up and have fun, smile, and be friendly. Nobody likes an arrogant jerk and nobody likes a cry baby-it’s best to be, talk, and act like a real person who is there to have fun, ride safe, and progress their skills. As soon as you leave Whistler, even to Squamish, you realize the people get better. They’re having more fun and cheer each other on. That’s why people like your channel Yuka. You are authentic. Keep it real ✌🏻

My first time at Trestle bike park in Colorado, the guy I was following didn't listen to directions and I ended up on all black runs for my first trip down. We were supposed to be on the greens and I thought "boy if these are the greens, I'm in trouble." And yes, I too crashed.

My first bike park experience came after 55 years of riding. Things that really caught me out: The scale of the jumps and drops, which surprisingly only took a few runs to adjust to. Full face helmets are very hot and limit your vision dramatically, so I avoid parks that require them. The trails are not nearly as smooth as they look at speed on video, don't take your hard tail your first time. Lifts are so much slower than ski season, so you can easily spend most of your time standing around on a busy day.
@Primarch_Vulkan
@Primarch_Vulkan 2 жыл бұрын
"Full face helmets are very hot and limit your vision dramatically" They only limit your vision a small amount and it's not really enough to be any kind of detrement and i'd rather be warm and have all my teeth at the end of the day than be a bit cooler and lose them.

Del Bocca Vista has lots of 12-18" drops and little features that you can hop by preloading. We spent our first day / trip on the green trails. The Greens are mainly intros to mini slabs and berms, but a bit pedally for the first few minutes. Definitely didn't need the Downhill bike the first time, LOL! B-line and Crank It Up are good intros to jumps. Greens took about 15 minutes and blues were about 5-10. Pace yourself if you are used to 30-60 second downhill runs like me!

@@carlfranciscon ebikes are mostly allowed at Whistler, just not at the higher-elevation trails. I didn't ride my 1st "lift assist bike park" until a few years into my riding. It definitely is not the same as trail ratings! I personally prefer the fun flowy green stuff (dang getting older and responsibility).
@llamasugar5478

Can you tell me more about the differences? I’m in my third season but have likely only ridden trail systems. (I say that because I’m not sure of the differences) I started mtb at 55, so I have fewer responsibilities than women with babes at home, but OYE! the recovery time for injuries seems longer (and they hurt more than I remember).
@brandihodges9548
@brandihodges9548 2 жыл бұрын
@@llamasugar5478 I started riding at 43 and luckily have only 1 "major crash". I've found, riding in 8 different states so far, that not all trail rating are the same in regular trail networks also. A green/blue where I live is a black in "lower elevation" areas. So a green at a actual "bike park" is more blue/black at a trail system. Bike parks are obviously steeper than regular stuff usually also.

@@brandihodges9548 I’ve broken ribs twice. This season, I went from a small frame to a medium. The handle bars are much wider, which I didn’t care for, but everyone said I’d have better control. Nuts. I’ve clipped more trees than I care to count, and a month ago I got a concussion so bad I still can’t locate the exact place it happened or remember what happened. On trails I’ve successfully negotiated dozens of times. I shall be swapping out my new bars for the old ones.

@@llamasugar5478 I run 750 bars on all my bikes. I've taken 10 clinics and a private jumping lesson. Being older and still working, I can't afford to "do much outside my comfort level". I like XC and DH flowy trails. Definitely not a fan of tech trails.

@@brandihodges9548 Yes! That’s what my old bars are. My new ones? I don’t remember exactly, but they’re so far past my shoulders that I feel like a truck driver wrestling a big steering wheel. Not super helpful on the few tech trails I do ride. I, too, am a fan of the flow. I still work, but it’s one of those jobs one is obviously doing out of love (Spec Ed sub teacher) and not for money. Biggest problem for beginners isn't going too fast ... It's going too slow, which for beginner (and sometimes advanced) riders is by far the #1 reason people crash. It's just physics. It's harder to knock a bike off course when the wheels are spinning faster.

The availability of green or easier blue trails notwithstanding, it kind of seems to me like unless a beginner is going specifically to avail themselves of the downhill lessons or something, then a trip to Whistler would seem weird IMO. It's good that Whistler has some easy stuff. OTOH, if you are defaulting to wanting to ride mellow double track, going to a bike park and buying a lift ticket seems like a rather inefficient way to do it. It just doesn't seem worth it without having the skills and endurance to go beyond the easier trails. I am pretty cheap though. And also far away from BC, so the travel cost/impact not relevant to people in the BC area may be affecting my judgement.
@itsbare5172
@itsbare5172 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't looked at many other bike parks, but I do think with some of the things I saw that whistler's value can come from just the amount of reps and training grounds they have there. A trip there could turn a beginner(early) to a late stage beginner or even an early stage intermediate rider in just a trip there.
