Is white privilege real? Is a white bricklayer more privileged than a black CEO? Where does class fit into the discussion about universal white privilege? Do white people simply have to admit that life is harder for non-white people? Or is there a danger that our fascination with ‘white privilege’ is re-racialising society? In this fascinating debate, challenging questions are raised, the audience get stuck in and the Battle of Ideas lives up to its name, encouraging serious discussion with free speech allowed.
This debate was filmed by WORLDwrite-WORLDbytes volunteers at the Battle of Ideas at the Barbican in November 2019. The speakers are:
Aaqil Ahmed: professor of media, University of Bolton; media consultant; non-executive director, Advertising Standards Authority and OFCOM; former head of religion, Channel 4 and BBC.
Katharine Birbalsingh: headmistress, Michaela Community School; author, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Teachers: the Michaela way.
Dr Myriam Francois: journalist; filmmaker, City of Refuge; founder, weneedtotalkaboutwhiteness.com; research associate, SOAS.
Courtney Hamilton: photographer and writer.
The chair is Fraser Myers: staff writer, spiked; producer, spiked podcast.

John Smith not bigoted. Those who weaponise political diversity often say, men can’t talk about women’s issues, non disabled can’t talk about disability issues. It’s all nonsense. @Chet Simmons Alot of the issues you mentioned are unfortunate and should be corrected where necessary. But as a white person, none of those situations benefit me or give me any extra privileges when they occur to Black People. So it doesnt make sense to name a phenomenon after White people, that describes things that are NOT happening to White people. If the goal is to bring disadvantaged people UP, we're not going to get there by talking White people down.

@Chet Simmons John McWhorter spoke about how "black sounding names" (real African or faux African inventions) is a phenomenon that started in the 1960s. Before that, even famous jazz greats had normal American names in America. Cassius Clay Jr was named after Cassius Clay Sr who was named after Cassius Clay the hardy and virulent white abolitionist who had to defend his position with guns and knives, as he was shot by people who hated him. Cassius Clay the boxer decided to replace his 'slave name'. Mohammed Ali was named after two Muslim slave traders who justified slavery of Africans, including The Prophet Himself who called Africans "raisin heads". Teenagers are profiled while shopping because they are more likely to be shoplifters. Did Walmart lock up Black hair care because of racism? Or because of inventory counts? Have you seen this trend of theft and armed robbery to steal weave? Have you seen Flash mobs of shoplifters raiding malls for clothing and iPhones? Marx said capitalism invades everywhere. If food deserts are a fact related to poor nutrition, as Michelle Obama said, that goes against what Marx said about capitalist greed. Police patrol where there's crime, at the behest of residents who are victims of crime .. Black residents who are vulnerable and can't live in peace who phone up cops and go with relatives to council meetings to demand justice for themselves vs criminals. Whites fear Blacks for the same reasons as Jesse Jackson stated. Glenn Lowry experienced a bottle thrown at his car by a Black man he had never seen or met, a stranger who randomly didn't like him or didn't like his fancy car. Black professionals don't usually have a problem renting or buying. Maybe some places. (NOT "NEVER".) Black professionals have a high credit score and can pass a background check. If they do face discrimination, they can easily find a substitute. A white landlady said she was accused of doing racist eviction. The lease said no pets. There were no pets. A boyfriend moved in with his pitbull, but secretly. The pitbull attacked a federal worker and the homeowner had to pay damages. Violating the lease and causing damages to the owner, not to mention blatant disrespect, couldn't be the reason for eviction. The only answer is bigotry. Tommy Sotomayor (yeah, i know) moved into a White neighborhood in Arizona. He told a story of how his new neighbors, before he met them, went out of their way to care for his property and protect him from fines as he never experienced in a Black neighborhood where he grew up. This just scratches the surface. Did white bigotry *cause* these dysfunctional behaviors? Does white bigotry *cause* Black students to reject learning? Glenn Lowry and John McWhorter are just two college educated Black Men grappling with these questions. UNPACKNG PEGGY McINTOSH'S INVISIBLE BACKPACK of White Privilege by William Ray. This PhD from Radcliffe, and her husband's family, are examples of EXTREME White Privilege, living in the uppermost wealthy very white zip codes, with family announcements on Society pages. Her "paper" on White Privilege is subjectively drawn from her personal experience. Well, as expected.

If White privilege "ain't about you (white people)", then why is it named after White People. Supposedly it describes the various negative things that are happening to people of color, so why is it named after the people it's NOT happening to? I think its fair to say that white people may be more likely to be treated at a certain baseline level of fairness where others may be less likely. The goal should be to bring everyone up to that line. So I don't understand how focusing on such negative aspects of "whiteness" (as the blonde woman on the panel clearly and intentionally does) brings us closer to that goal?

I used to see Myriam Francois appear on Nicky Campbell's show 'The Big Questions' fairly frequently, perhaps as long as 10 years ago. Back then she spoke with quite a plummy, cut glass accent. Now she has clearly delved more deeply into the 'woke' side of things she appears to have developed a faux-London accent, typical of that affected by Corbynistas such as those at Novara Media. It's a shame: she sounds much less intelligent for it.

According to the second speaker, any person who has passed through whatever institution which holds authority and provides them with a network and gravitas to succeed and gain authority or powerful position...regardless of their skin colour or ethnicity...has White Privilege. So...why do we call it white privilege??? Why don't we call it social privilege, or status privilege or social status...instead of giving it a colour and insinuating that white people have it??? If white privilege is just the new definition of Social status and a black or brown person can have it provided they went to Eton and Cambridge or Oxford...and has a high status job with authority...why call it white privilege??? It's just inflammatory and built to be divisive. And when challenged on this very point by a question from the audience...we got waffle and word salad. Just goes to show they don't want to drop the "white" moniker from the term...they want it kept there to shame, blame and disrespect white people and feel righteous and noble while doing so.

What blows the lid off for me is the very idea that privilege owns only one color. Or that it is separate and apart from privilege of birth, IQ, physicality, good looks, talents, skills and abilities, etc. But even much of that is the product of hard work, determination and ambition. The really embarrassing elephant in the room is the multi-generational white underclass. But beyond all this. It occurs to me that what is decidedly not on board is the idea of equality. As if any other color, race or ethnicity is by design, default or whatever, incapable of ever possessing the means of equal standing in society. As if this concept loses the ability to be dealt with human to human. As if that one aspect of a person is entirely beside the point. As if the object of the game is to tear the humanity right out of people and replace it with cardboard cutout stereotypes. The gentleman in the audience who had a lovely rant about wishing to be an individual, and not owned by an identity - spoke volumes. Katharine is such a breath of fresh air. Her school kids are lucky.

If the aim is not to bring white people down in the name of anti racism, and it's instead to talk about the discrepancies of every race in society, why not use a more unbiased objective term such as "Race Relations"? "White" and "Privilege" are both heavily biased and subjective terms that very clearly point in one specific direction. It seems that the term does more damage to this conversation than any potential positive contribution. It's like a flashy controversial headline you see on newspapers to sell newspapers. Often times the story is nowhere near fitting the title, and yet, the title always peaks and primes our presuppositions before hearing the first word of the actual content. If you want to poison a topic before it's even discussed, this is one of the best ways to do that.

One lady mentioned how divisive the term white privilege is. The Dr said about the division of the working class in history along race lines. It was also mentioned that the privilege was granted structurally. Who runs that structure and the institutions? Who runs the media that use dog whistle racism to stir up division in the working classes? I think the only logical conclusion is that class privilege underpins everything, because it was the elites who were the slave owners, elites that make the policy and have the power to shape public opinion through media. I think if we overcame that capitalist class privilege then white privilege may not exist at all, as race will not be used to stoke divisions and thus will equalise over time.

Yes and I'll explain why: I've lived in Sweden my whole life 38 years, I have Swedish culture Swedish language the whole package. I'm still not accepted as a Swede among the ppl. only my closest circle. A friend immigrated from Australia like 10 years ago, he is accepted as a Swede now. The difference is he is "white" and I'm not. How is that not white privilege? He is not excluded in the society and discriminated upon, but I am. How is that not yt privilege? "White" drunk ppl dont get stopped from entering a club but a sober POC like me can be stopped. Not white privilege 🤷🏿‍♀️ things like that. Because the owner of the club wants sweds inside and not immigrant. As I said I lived in Sweden my entire life and also have native Swedish parents. Another thing. I'm not allowed to critique things in the society bc I'm brown person living in a majority "White" country (not my choice) so therefor I'm just a person who should shut up and be thankful to be here. It's ridiculous! White ppl of the society don't get that attitude. If you're white you're the norm and not excluded! That's white privilege!

I think you should fully be accepted where you live. But Sweden, like it or not, was until very recently a very ethnically homogenous country, and the whole concept of nationality was based on ethnicity. Are ethnic Swedish people white? Yes, than a white Australian (specially if of Northern European heritage) could pass as Swedish. If a white man goes to live in Japan, he will never be seen as fully Japanese. I am white, but have black curly hair. In Turkey people thougt I was native, I doubt a Swede would be fully accepted there. I also don't think I would be fully accepted in Sweden, perhaps more than you though.

There is no shortage of such stories of outsiders immigrating and never being accepted due to their race on the internet, even when they’re not black. Try searching up living as a foreigner in any of the places I mentioned and you’ll find stories similar to yours happening to white people among others. I can even find a few articles and videos if you desire. It stems from the tribalism of a majority more than it does a unique, universal preference for whites.

Interesting debate, and I like how they could disagree without devolving into shouting. ☺️✌🏾 I've experienced racism and I was even falsely arrested (which was both infuriating and frightening) however, I do think blanket terms (like "White privilege", or "disenfranchised people", or "White fragility", and etc) often tend to exacerbate the problem, rather than help people sort it out. After all, we humans have been tribal creatures for tens of thousands of years; we used to live in tiny groups where any "outsiders" from other groups could be an imminent threat to our survival. Research on early hominids and early canids has shown that humans have been sharing our homes and resources with DOGS (as hunting partners and companions) for longer than we've been sharing our resources with other human groups *_who didn't look like us_* -- So it's going to take time, and work, and understanding, for us to evolve from our intrinsic tribal mindset of "Us vs Them". And that's why I think we all need to try to see each other as people first, before whatever race we each may be. This is why I shun overgeneralizations like "White privilege" -- because it's way too broad to be useful. I think more nuance is going to be the way forward. I know it's cliché to say this, but -- Some of my best friends are White. But race has never been a salient factor between us, it's far down the list from our characters. Of course we acknowledge and respect each other's racial and ethnic heritage; but race is not the most important factor in what defines us. It's part of who we are, but it's not ALL we are.

You should read a little about racism, race and prejudice seriously and away from your bubble. Have a good look at Fanon and Memi. Try also Anibal Quijano and Walter Mignolo for a reading on coloniality of power. Or Stuart Hall and Gilroy for the UK. Whiteness and white privilege are real and important racial categories of domination, exploitation; a comfortable way of silencing those who do not share white supremacy. Nobody is perfect it's true.

Yes, the terms are deliberately provocative and intended to undermine resolution - i.e. they're intended to perpetuate and even create division, racism and discrimination. It is a weaponisation of Academic Inquiry and Civil Rights in the service of the Elite (foreign oligarchs and their extended apparatus) in order to divert attention from their totalitarianism, criminal conspiracies and Police State programmes. Divide&Conquer. Marijam herself referred to the precedent and origin of this strategy.

It's not whether it's real or fake, the term is made up of course and now there just has to be a clear definition of what is it meant to be. It seems obvious, but whoever made up the term would need to tell us what it was suppose to really mean in order for anyone to debate over it. I can see in the descriptions there is no one clear idea of what it is and I see that there are many different ideas of what people think it is, because they don't know and are just asking more questions to what they speculate what is meant by it. All those questions and ideas seem to be separate topics with some relation to the subject. They can probably all be answered separately with satisfying answers and would still not help people come to a solid conclusion on the term white privilege. Why don't people just make it in one understandable question and drop the term all together? If we want to just ask a simple straight forward question instead, something like, "Do white people have more privilege's in the United States than black people do since the United States began?" I'd say yes they do. It seems easy to see, to me. You have to look at the whole thing, not just right now. The way right now is, is because of what happened before, that's how history works and actions and reactions. History stays and grows with us. "History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us. We are our history. If we pretend otherwise, we are literally criminals." -James Baldwin If we look at the beginning of the United States like a race, then the race started at the beginning, some people had a head start and generations after that inherited that head start and others inherited starting later or being held back. Not just wealth is something people inherit. Humans inherit all of history and we can see, in the present, what history has done to us. People are where they are and accomplished what they have accomplished and have suffered what they have suffered, because of past events and you can trace it all back if you are so inclined. The fact that white people were racist towards black people and not the other way around, is a pretty good clue white people had more privilege in this society than black people. Whether you want to say had more privilege or still has and has the same now, still doesn't take away the fact that black people had less when you add it all up. They can never get to an even playing ground since the game has already started and is still continuing. They are already in the hole and they were from the beginning. The generations who inherited there misfortunes can only try to do the actions to get themselves in a good position if they can. We all inherit our families luck and when we are old enough, if we can, we try to make a life we like. Some families were already in a good position from past events and I'm pretty sure most of those families were white people. It's getting better now, but the previous privilege's has already benefited generations and we are all in the positions we are now, due to that history, whether we like it or not. Since people have been prejudiced towards other people in the past, this doesn't mean now it has just gone away either. People may fight to get equal treatment and this fight will help bring things more equal, as it has been from all those people fighting for it, but still, the past has already dictated who was being treated more equal than others, to use a line for Animal Farm. The damage was already done and the score is in. White people have been winning the race from the beginning and had the privilege to collect past opportunities already, way before black people fought enough to be allowed to. Black people are fighting to catch up, but they missed out on a lot of past opportunities. If this was a pyramid scheme, white people would have kept them out and black people had to fight to be allowed in and are getting in way too late. Imagine the United States was a scavenger hunt....there's too many analogies to use.

GOING OFF TOPIC A BIT A clue, in terms of history, is in the division of the working class created by the "1%". the elite of society. it was the 1% that divided us and it is probably the 1% then that would have the final say on whether we unite or not. on this line of thought I move on to think that make the mistake was from the uneducated working class from allowing the elite to divide them at the time. class and racial and colour privilege does exist and if it doesn't it definitely can exist. if we are to change the focus on class again I am sure we would come up against a whole lot of problems that would make it complex and troublesome to try to solve the class inequality or privilege but we wouldn't have a debate on, does acknowledge so lets go from here. what would have happened if the working class turned around to the "1%" and said. NO, no we won't accept your scraps in other to make us feel better then the other race. we won't be fooled by accepting more a generous amount of crap unlike our counter parts of a different race who get an unfair amount of crap. what I mean is, the white working class was tricked by the 1%, just like all the other races were, into believing that the real injustice was elsewhere. and what did the white working class get out of that. not much. really they are still in the same position in terms of class. they still have the same problem that all the other races have. and that problem is that "1%" of the population have the financial power to influence change and attempt to make significant changes to societies and that sounds like a dangerous and scary truth although it would, for sure, get more complex.

The Miriam blunt instrument approach, while the things/stats she states are very relevant and should be known, is just too divisive and while you can sit on your high moralistic horse that you are correct in your statements it doesn't help or improve the situation.. in fact I believe it is making it worse. When young kids from terrible economic backgrounds are being told they have privilege they will reject that, and subsequently there are plenty of nefarious right wing groups who will benefit because their propaganda fits the problem. It's so easy. So the question, "is white privilege real? “ should be “does critical race theory make for a better society? “ and I truly believe that the answer is no.

Yes it’s real... we have civil rights protections in place to prevent discrimination against someone in employment, education and housing. They are put in place to protect people from being discriminated against due to their race, nationality, skin color. These federal and state protections came about because of the discrimination that black people were facing in these various aspects of their lives after the civil war. The civil rights act was the first piece of federal legislation enacted to protect black people from being denied equal opportunities simply because of their skin color, since they had no recourse prior to these laws for being denied their natural right to equality . White people never had a history of facing inequality in employment, housing and education due to their race. However, these civil rights protections apply to them as well, they apply to all citizens. But to have civil rights protections to ensure that you are not discriminated against when looking for a job or a house based on your race, but not actually NEED those protections to be treated equally, is a privilege that white people enjoy and black people do not. Black people were not treated equally without the laws requiring it, and that is a privilege our white counterparts get that black people never had- which is why the civil rights act became law in the first place. If they were taken away, White people have no reason to fear unequal treatment. It’s not a reason to call white people racist, though. And in all fairness, white people arent the most privileged of all races at all times. But whether it exists is not really a matter of debate.

Right for most European Imperial country. Racism is a relational phenomenon; both whites and blacks are actors and part of it. Whites have to be objects of study as much as blacks. Jus ask my Irish grandparents whom raised 13 children in a one room house in a black neighborhood! There were signs hung in storefronts "Irish men need not apply". Upon our arrival in North America we were considered an infestation by the brittish. Irish people are an ethnic group native to Ireland , a painted tribal people with their own culture and language and traditions. A culture, language , and traditions white people tried to exterminate. More specifically the" Brittish". They are the "privleged" ones. Lots of black north Americans have irish surnames. This happened because of equality! Alot of black Americans have brittish surnames ....this was because of slavery:(

For those who still don't get what "white privilege" (majority privilege) is: Imagine a school for young children, where the school has this stupid thing about discrimination/prejudices against children that wears glasses bc of bad vision. Where it's ok to treat those children diffrent in a negative way and are even encouraging that behaviour. It's therefore a privilege to have good eyesight. So the children with good vision are not to blame for this (nothing wrong with having good vision). The teachers who are just doing as encouraged are not directly to blame for this - but the school is! Children with glasses wants to change this bc they are tired of not being treated as the majority kids and wants everyone to take a stand against the school to change this so everyone could be treated equal, not be excluded etc. Some of the privileged kids are wrongfully playing the victims and are saying they are the ones being oppressed by the kids wearing glasses bc of this "good vision privilege". Some are even pricks who refuse to acknowledge what is going on so that say there is no such thing as a privilege for having good vision, so we don't care, says shut up to the kids with glasses, stop blaming us - you should just be lucky that you can studie here! But the discriminated kids aren't blaming the majority kids for their privilege, that's a false claim. Most of the teachers are like: whatever, Im just following rules I just want my salary, don't care. So is it really only the kids with glasses that should fight against the school, alone? Imagine if the majority kids (privileged) took a stand against the schools for this and so did the teachers? They would be changing the environment for the better without making it worse for themselves! Are you seriously not believing that would be the good and the right thing to do? Or are you still going be a prick and deny that there is no such thing as "white privilege" in the western world? School = norm setting Teachers = leaders/ppl in power and workers in system as police etc. Good vision privilege kids = the majority (the now norm) low pigmented ppl in the western society Kids with glasses = minorities (non low-pigmented ppl) POCs.
