Because of this video I finally went to the ER to get my calf pain I had been havingchecked out, it was getting to where I could hardly walk. Did the Homan’s sign test and it hurt like heck so went straight to the ER. Turned out it is a femoral and popliteal vein DVT, and quite large. Just got of the hospital today after a two night stay. They sent me home with blood thinner Rx. This video might have saved my life, though not totally in the clear until the clot is resolved. It’s scary. Please pray for me.

I do want to add that I have never had redness or swelling with this DVT at any point. The nurses in the hospital could hardly see any swelling, yet internally there is a large clot around 6 inches. Do not let a lack of redness or swelling stop you from getting calf pain checked out. It’s one of the things that made me hesitate to go for a while, was the fact there was no redness or swelling. This video finally pushed me into going.

@@Cptraktorn it wasn't super painful per se. When I stood up I could feel pressure building in my calf and foot but it didn't hurt much. But when I went to straighten it out, I couldn't. Like I physically couldn't without pain then. The biggest reason I went to the doc was because there was no reason at all for this pain and I couldn't walk and it wasn't getting better after three days. Highly recommend going to doc, you don't want to mess around with this.

@@tanyawieczorek7943 they don't know for sure. But my diet for about a month before was lot and lots of fats. I was eating like 5 eggs for breakfast, two big pork steaks for dinner and full fat Greek yogurt with protein powder for dessert. Trying to bulk up and recover from the gym. This along with chronic dehydration, drinking basically no water each day. On top of that, the leg where I got the dvt I wasn't walking properly on it because I had a bad callus on the bottom of my foot. So barely any actual full flexing of my left foot while walking. I think it was a combination of all these things. I'm still waiting to see a specialist though..

Idk if I have it but man my calves hurt. It hurts a lot that I have to use one leg to walk on my tip of my foot. I think what caused it was when I was stretching my calves and think I stretched too long or something.. But then I was doing leg stretches on the floor and that was all. But then the next day after that it started to affect. My calves felt so tight and sore when I stood up and began to walk. Now I look like I'm whimping when I walk that I use my right leg tip of my foot to support me when I walk. My right calf hurts the most!!.. I have no idea what pain it is. I just hope it goes away fast.

Docs did tests and asked questions.. i wrote down answers. I was in hospital for a week on warfarin . Just a few days ago i had stretched out my leg and it seemed to just get worse.. i keep trying to walk on it...slow going.. today seemed ok at beginning Maybe the 2 extra strength tylenol But as day went on it felt worse if i was sitting...I sat at a cafe with a friend and we sat on stools.. and it got to be too much i had to get up n keep moving. Kinda felt like that first time.. so I looked up leg blood clot...and here I am.....hoping its not but have a feeling it might be another clot.

I was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism, only after I insisted to have my calve pain checked by a specialist, since my own GP said it was just muscle pain. No discoloration, not swollen, no fever, only a horrible pain. In the end the blood clot ended up in my left lung causing a infarct. These men make it seem it's simple to recognize DVT, deep venous thrombosis. Apparently it can be quite tricky.

I took my mom to urgent care and decided to get the increasing pain behind my knee checked out while I was there. The dr there thought I might have sprained something but ordered an ultrasound just to rule out DVT. Can’t believe that the radiologist said I was positive for DVT and sent me to the hospital. I didn’t see swelling but the dr felt swelling. I was literally dragging my leg because it hurt to stand on it. I would have never checked it out if I hadn’t brought my mom to urgent care. I’m pretty sure my pcp would have thought only a sprain and not rule out other stuff with testing. I could have easily set myself up for a pulmonary embolism because it only felt like a crap starting to form behind my knee. So I understand how easy it is to go unrecognized or be misdiagnosed. I had cancer 3 years ago. Even with a giant lymph node forming, my pcp at the time misdiagnosed me and so did the allergy specialist she sent me to. I only found out it was cancer after going to the hospital right before my follow up. Without the lymph node, the only symptom I had was extreme tiredness. Without the multiple symptoms, it’s hard for them to pinpoint what you have.

I wish my daughter would have known about this test. Although it may not have made a difference. What happened to her, happened very quickly. She woke up on a Monday morning with pain in her leg. She told her boyfriend she was going to go to Urgent Care before work. She quickly changed her mind and asked him to take her because she didn’t think she could drive herself. She was also suffering from shortness of breath by this time and it was getting worse. She lived in a second floor apartment. They made it to the landing halfway down. She sat down there, unable to go any further. Those were her last steps and probably her last words. He called 911 and they came and took her to the nearby hospital, and her boyfriend followed in his car. By the time her boyfriend got to where she was in the emergency room, they were already working on her. He was told she was in critical condition and he could hear all the commotion in her cubicle of them working on her…machines beeping, urgency in their voices. Mercifully, they had put her out and were putting her on a breathing machine, so she wasn’t conscious. They worked on her for about 20 minutes but were unable to save her. For some reason, I’m unable to remember what her time of death was, but sometime after 9:00. She would have been getting up for work by around 6:30 or 7:00, so it only took roughly two hours from start to finish. They’d had an uneventful weekend with no warning signs. She may have had some kind of sign, but we’ll never know because she never said anything, but she wasn’t someone who complained about every little ache or pain. However, a few months earlier she’d gone to the doctor and was told she couldn’t fly up to visit me because she had a small clot in her leg. It would have been an hour and a half flight, from San Jose CA to Portland OR. He told her it was a small clot and nothing she needed to worry about. He prescribed an anti inflammatory and that was it. There was no follow up and she wasn’t treated any further. No blood thinner medication. I’ve since found out that they don’t usually prescribe them in that type of situation. She did have some of the risk factors though, and had a sedentary job sitting at a desk. And in fact, there was a hereditary factor that we were unaware of. My other daughter has been tested and she has markers in her blood for the same thing. She’s under a doctors care now and being monitored so the same thing won’t happen to her, thank God! It came from her dad’s side because we were both tested and mine came back negative. I only wish we’d known about this before! Maybe Sara’s life could have been saved. All of our lives were changed forever that day. No parent should have to outlive a child. My other daughter lost her sister who was also her best friend. She had only just turned 35. 💔

I've suffered 2 separate instances of DVTs, which led to pulmonary embolisms; both of which were induced by long periods of sitting still. After the second one, my doctor prescribed Xarelto and I will have to take it for the rest of my life. Great advice on what you can do to reduce the likelihood of getting a DVT while traveling. However, I'm surprised you guys didn't mention using compression socks while on a long flight or drive. I use them every time I travel long distances, in addition to stopping every 2 hours to just walk around for a few minutes. A good pair of compression socks can be a lifesaver.

I had leg pain in my right leg calf down to my Achilles tendon. Sometimes the leg would go numb below the calf, but the pain was almost constant because my job requires me to be on my feet 90% of the shift. After a couple of weeks of the pain not subsiding I went to my Doctor who scheduled an ultrasound which showed a blood clot behind the knee. The Doctor immediately prescribed blood thinner Pradaxa, and Naphroxin for pain. It took about six months for the clot to totally dissolve and the pain to stop. My side effects with Pradaxa were brutal at times, shortness of breath, chest pains, and serious joint pain. Anyone who reads this and is having calf/Achilles pain, tingling/ numbness in lower leg, please get it checked out by your physician or fo to the emergency room. I take a low dose aspirin daily for life after doctors took me off the Pradaxa. The whole episode changed my life, had I ignored it I wouldn't be alive today. God bless 🙏

Hi Bob and Brad, My dad recommended your videos a few months ago and I became a subscriber. I'm so glad I did as I'll explain. I started having some left leg calf pain about a week ago. I chalked it up to a pulled muscle and started icing and heating etc. After a few days of no relief, I searched your videos on KZfaq hoping to find some good stretches for the calf. That's when I happened upon this video. It made me think about the possibility of a clot. I did your recommended test in the video and thought it might be worth going to get checked out. I went to my doctor this morning, where they did a d-diper test and found elevated levels. They then sent me to get some imaging where they discovered a clot just above my knee and one in my calf area. Had I not watched your video, the thought probably would not have entered my mind and I would have just continued assuming I pulled my calf muscle. I'm not one for hyperbole but I feel like your video may have saved my life. Thanks for all you guys do!

Just recently diagnosed with dvt/clots in calf & thigh. I had calf pain, swelling on one leg, BUT swelling was going down with elevation, and when I tried this test, squeezing my calf, it did not hurt that much, so I did not think it was DVT. Thankfully, I went to doc and they did ultrasound... Several clots found.

I have got one behind my knee, I knocked my calf at work, nothing major or enough to even report, but noticed my left leg had swollen slightly, Only a 2-3 cm difference but felt like a dull ache, went to the doctors and saw a nurse practitioner, decided it wasn’t a clot, after a week I went back as not happy, she did a D Dimer blood test which came back positive and I was sent for a ultrasound today which revealed the clot, I have to take blood thinners now and have some more tests, but if you have any symptoms go go the doctors.

Just got diagnosed with a Blood Clot this week in my left calf leg. I had the knee arthroscope 2 weeks ago. The only pain I had was in the back of my knee and never in my calf! My only clue something was wrong was that my calf turn hard as a rock and I told the Doctor and it save my life!
@eastmanediting7027
@eastmanediting7027 4 жыл бұрын
Yes mine was originally just in the back of my knee! It spread to my calf and thigh later, but I remember that pain specifically. I thought I just pulled a muscle, but there was no reason for it and I just thought it felt "off" compared to a normal muscle soreness. It's hard to explain, but somehow I knew it was a blood clot even though I didn't get checked out for months. In all that time, the clot got worse and I developed dozens of pulmonary emboli. If I had gone in right away, I may have been able to save my lungs from so much damage. I was 33, physically fit, and had many well-meaning friends and loved ones tell me I was worrying about nothing. Always trust your gut! It's better to be wrong and feel "silly" than to ignore it until it almost kills you.

Many Republican governor's refused the funding to help people with it, just because they're not concerned about making Obama and the Democrats look bad, than about people's lives. No matter the situation, I wish you the best! And DON'T wait for it, it could save your life!

I thought I had one once after a 12 hour drive in the car ... I went to the hospital (which for me takes A LOT) the doctor basically laughed at me and told me it's just me getting older (I was 45 at the time). Although it might be part of it, treating people like that is the exact reason that I hesitate to go to the hospital or doctor. I didn't end up having a clot, but they did find other things which was causing my dizziness and nausea. I pray that doctor's stop acting like that guy ... It's really not comforting for the patients.

In medicine, Homans' sign (sometimes spelled as Homans sign) or the dorsiflexion sign is considered a sign of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It was defined by John Homans in 1941 as discomfort behind the knee on forced dorsiflexion of the foot.[1] After surgeons discovered many examples of a false-positive Homans' sign, Homans redefined it in 1944, stating that "discomfort need have no part in the reaction", including increased resistance, involuntary flexure of the knee or pain in the calf to forced dorsiflexion as positive responses.[1][2][3][needs update] It is estimated to have a sensitivity of 10-54% and a specificity of 39-89%,[1] and is thus considered to have no diagnostic value, since a positive sign does not indicate DVT and a negative sign does not rule it out.[1] Still, it is widely used in clinical practice, probably because of its historical role prior to the availability of more reliable diagnostic studies (such as a D-dimer titration or a Doppler ultrasound), as well the ease of eliciting it.[4] Signs and symptoms of DVT in general are not sufficiently sensitive or specific to make a diagnosis, being helpful only to help determine the likelihood of a DVT (with the use of a clinical prediction rule such as the Wells score).[5]
@HappyCat3096
@HappyCat3096 7 жыл бұрын
I added this because I had a DVT that was missed because the doc relied on Homan's and Homan's only. By the time I was diagnosed 6 weeks later the clot was all the way up into my pelvis and I was hospitalized for 6 days. Imagine if they had caught it early when it was still a little clot in my calf. I probably wouldn't have had that brain bleed from heparin and wouldn't have post thrombotic syndrome now.

This test did not work for me either. I do not present with classic symptoms because I seek help before the problem gets that big. Unfortunately most doctors only look for the classic signs. My doctor tests "just in case" and catches them early.

Thank you for mentioning Wells criteria. As a PT for 27 years, I have to admit earlier in my career I depended on Homans test. I also frequently sent my TKA patients to get Dopplers that were negative. When I did wells criteria in inpatient rehab, with a student who educated me, we were able to find 2 patients with clots (1 was already diagnosed, we weren’t informed). Much more reliable

Self-test: Do yo drink ½ Litre of boiled water first thing in the morning, for gently waking the body and body functions up,cleansing, detox, hydration - of blood vessels too!!! -for bowel movements etc? Do you eat blood-thinning foods like garlic, Ginger or that yellow curcumin root etc? Do you sit still most of the time? Do you excercise, go for a walk, do some gymnastics , stretching, dancing etc every day? Do you reduce and manage stress? Feel and Express feelings, exchange hugs, laugh, have some fun, do deep breathing daily, pray and /or meditate min. 5 mins.? Dop you take care of problems and relationships, fears , anger, resentment, worry, anxiety so taht they don't accumúlate, build mental pressure=nervousness= tense muscles= stress= burdened nerves, heart, vessels, blood clotting from stress (to help you fight or flee without bleeding!) See therapist , self-help groups like 12-steps program to work through the reasons for not loving yourself enough to take care of your precious, faithful, wise, hard-working body? - Listen to Jordan Peterson on the reason why we neglect our bodies.
