Is Your Game Box Too Big? Cut It Down to Size

Publishers release games in large boxes for all sorts of reasons - but you should feel free to resize those shelf hogs and make them fit the space you want. In this video, I make an example of Berried Treasure, cutting it down to less than a quarter of its original size.

I think this (cutting boxes) needs its own series.

Really cool idea. I wish more games came in smaller boxes. Better for travel, and storing more at home in limited space.

Man... I envy you!! I could never do that.. if I ever lack space I would buy a bigger house before cutting boxes!

Just my two cents that may help someone else similar to me: I used to obsess over ways to store my games more compactly, making custom boxes and purchasing alternative storage solutions. I wanted to most efficiently fit my huge, growing collection into the space available. More space for more games, right? Now, I don't look at it that way anymore. My collection is too large for my space, and the answer is not to package things more tightly, it is to lessen the number of games. I have a wonderful space for storage, and I've decided that the right size collection for me is the number of games that will fit that space without needing to minimize box sizes. So I have been slowly reducing the number of games in my collection over the last couple of years.

I used to save the cardboard from the tokens, now I started reducing game space (tiny apartment) by using deck boxes, fitting expansions in base game (and throwing their boxes out), putting only the cover on top of other smaller boxes. I just needed to start doing this like taking off a band-aid, really a relief.

Can't do that. It hurts me just to watch.

I believe the tearing along the folds is because of a few factors. You're right that the paper weave is one, but it's also the density and direction of the adhesive, the "grain" of the punchboard, and the depth of your internal crease. When all the factors align, you get a natural hinge. When they're not aligned, you get one layer resisting the others, resulting in structural failure of the outermost layer. Unfortunately, it's very much a matter of luck. Even if you cut out the punchboard to a perfect 45º score, there may still be some stiff adhesive that resists the fold and causes a break.

I love watching you do this stuff. It was after thr Furnace reboxing video that I started doing this on my own too.

Yeah, I am a big proponent of 'make it fit'. I don't go out of my way to mar a game, mind you. But I will trim an eighth of an inch from cards to put them in sleeves. I will trim mats to make them fit in a smaller space on the table if it will make a difference. Expansions go in core boxes. More room for more games.

Very cool. I have such limited space and I really appreciate smaller boxes. I liked this. Because really, the box is not important at all.

This was cool to see! I've seen people make custom boxes before (with printing out smaller versions of the box art), but it's cool to just use what's existing on the box. And then you have a bunch of leftover box material to make other boxes if you want!

Great video. I'd struggle to make a good job of re-sizing my boxes!! Perhaps publishers should reduce the resources involved in packaging - clearly much is waste..?

If you're trying to save space, maybe you just have way too many games. I constantly game 3-5 nights a week and I dont even have enough time to play the 200ish games I have in my collection. I sell games that havnt been touched in a year or more to free up space at cons or I just give them to friends so I can just play them at their house.

I would love to see a video about cutting down a game box to be less deep. After I got Mage Knight Ultimate and tossed the insert, I cut the box down 2 inches to be about as deep as Ticket to Ride, but boy were mistakes made! I didn't find a good way to cut it without cutting at a weird angle, and on one side I didn't keep the knife straight, so I took too much off (luckily I started off okay, so there is enough cardboard on that side at proper height that the box lid rests just as if I didn't mess up!).

when my shoes are too small, I cut off my toes. I cried as I watched it. I'd rather make a new box from scratch.

Sometimes it just needs an idea :-) Thanks a lot! @WEM! For the past 5 hours I have cut and glued half a cupboard full of games the way you incepted me. The only reason why I'm stopping is because my rolling pizza-cutter broke :-D It was very useful to seperate the walls from the bottom and to carve the line to be bend up. I'm about to bring half my cellar up again as my game cupboard's content has shrinked tremendously :-)

That was painful to watch. I purchase those plastic card boxes big enough to hold the cards, Instructions and tokens. Sometimes I would even take the artwork and either scan n' shrink it to fit the clear plastic box or find the artwork online and size it to fit
