I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P43s, the fan is quiet at max, but I think the bios thinks that the fan is really noisy, so it always cranks it down and my laptop gets HOT. It also dosent care about battery temp or GPU temp, nor does it care too much about CPU temp whatsoever. I tried TPFanControl, but it was sorta confusing and it always resorted to its built in smart mode, which may be buggy, so I deleted it in the end.

I have the same problem with my Dell G5 Laptop. As soon as the CPU hits 60°C, the Fans spin at 60% load. I tried using low Power plans, all kinds of Software like Alienware and Speed fan, but nothing works. I can increase the fan speed and fan curve, but that fan does not turn off above 60°C. Undervolting is not available either. Dell support has posted in some thread that this is intentional. Fucking annoying.

Tips to cool down laptop: Upper limit temp : 90℃ to 100℃ Ideal temp : Around 50℃ or as low as possible Ideal operating ambient temp : 30℃ or lower - Use laptop on solid surfaces, give proper space & elevation for vents (use laptop stand or cooler, elevation alone helps more than number of fans in cooler) - Make sure your laptop is clean inside out specially vents that get filled with debrie overtime (cleaning, dusting, thermal pasting your laptop yearly). - Undervolt and underclock or just using lower performance profiles also helps. - Make sure your laptop inbuilt cooling mechanism is not broken and fans working properly (also try tweaking fans speed if laptop allowes) - Tweak settings that can help with performance and to save battery. Dont overload your device with crap.

For those out there needing support, I recently opened my razer blade 2014. Cleaned the vents, cleaned the heatpipe exhaust, and most importantly, re-pasted the thermal paste. This made a change from 70-80 degrees under low load, and above 100 degrees on high load, to a silent and cool laptop. I undervolted and under-clocked it as well, and it’s behaving like a really good boy ever since! Getting 60+ fps in most games I play :)

A guide on undervolting laptops. By undervolting properly you can really boost your laptops performance. I have my cpu at -.187mv and the cpu cache at -.125mv. I saw my cinebench R20 score go from 2000 average to my highest of 2777. By undervolting you lower the overall turbo of your cpu can maintain it longer until throttling. You can maintain a much higher overall clock speed. In my case I use an i7-8750, stock it turbos up to 4.1 for a few second before throttling all the way down to 2.7 at 94c. Undervolted it turbos to 3.9 but can now maintain 3.4 at 78c. Big improvement for me.

I'm kind of surprised repasting wasn't mentioned. The warranty on my Dell expired and I spent $8 to get some thermal grizzly kryonaut to repaste the CPU/GPU. Not only did it drop my idle temps, but I get a higher clock speed when under load. Load temps don't get any lower, though, because the laptop is set up to get as fast as possible while still keeping around 70c.

I've been battling high temps in my laptops for years. I think there are 3 more solutions you should've mentioned: 1. If your laptop is 4 or 5 years old, its highly posible that the thermal paste inside is dry. So it might be time to open it up and do some maintenence. 2. You can actually undervolt your CPU with minimum risk, and lower you temps a few degrees. 3. Intel Turbo Boost Technology and AMD Precision Boost can increase temps rapidly, and can keep your laptop warm for a long time. You can disable them in windows by going to your power settings, and setting your CPUs maximun usage to 99%. You will take a big performance hit, but temps for me went from 95° down to 75°. Alternatively, you can set a lower maximum frecuency in the same menu, though this requires you to run a small script to unlock the option.

By default it should be 0 MHz which basically means there is no frequency limit. You should check your CPU's maximum boost frequency and simply set a lower limit. (Remember that modern CPUs use GHz instead of MHz, so a good limit should be somewhere around 3500MHz)

@@felipecueto3481 thnx for your time and answer, but Mr. Google has already helped me to figure out registry way to get it done :) Allthough if not for you, I would never guessed that Windows is even capable of hiding such options! I thought they are either are ore are not available in different versions of OS. That was an important lesson learned. And since I manage computers and laptops of many people (I have a lot of friends that are not particularly good with that stuff), you Sir, just made their lives a whole lot easier, since they potentially need one extra program less :) As for me, I found 3.3 GHz more then enought in absolutely all apps I use and such cap prevents CPU from exceeding 80°C with an average about 75°C. Which i find more then compelling for my i7 9750H. It's so bezare, that neither Intel nor Microsoft hasn't left this important feature available by default, since this this is such an easy way to manaage ur CPU temps in healthy ranges! Especially in laptops! Anyway, thanx again, kind Sir, you helped a lot!

I've been running my cpu at 99% for a while now, I barely notice a thing in terms of performance loss. It went from 80 ish on demanding games down to 65c max. I also started undervolting my gpu, it definitely takes more tuning work to find a stable place that reduces your temps. But I managed to drop my gpu anywhere from 5 to 10 c without noticeable framerate loss. So now a demanding game typically tops out at 63c on the gpu and 65 on the cpu vs what I had before which was more like 72c on the gpu and 82c on the cpu.

Downvolting/downclocking CPU & GPU may be an option. Disabling the CPU turbo mode helps a lot too (the difference won't be felt >99% of the time), as well as using the Standard power mode in Windows (not the Performance one).

Strange as it might seem a more expensive laptop cooling pads doesn't usually amount to more cooling as those more expensive ones often use fancy paneling which at best doesn't help and at worse blocks airflow causing the pad to insulate while it's trying to cool which is not great. I recommend finding a cooling pad that uses one big and super quiet fan and is largely made of open gaps with a level enough surface to hold your laptop firm. The top part being made of a metal wire mesh being a good choice.

One of the best things I ever did was get a Lap top where the vent is on the side of the machine (Toshiba), instead of under the darn thing. It made a huge difference. A trick for a poor man's version of a cooling tray I used on the old laptop and it worked fairly well considering the laptop was really old and where I live the heat gets really bad in Summer (no air con or desk fan). Is to take two kiddie spades (shovels) and stick them under the laptop to raise it off the ground. Even two forks with their points covered with tape to protect surfaces or the laptop from damage, work too.

I got a Dell g5 for cheap about a year ago that had a serious throttling issue when gaming. I managed to get it under control by undervolting the cpu and lowering its frequency. It went from about 100 c regularly in games to about 70ish most of the time when under load. I also repasted the thermal paste on the cpu but I'd only recommend that if you're comfortable with taking the laptop apart.

Air dusting isn't always reliable, because the dust sometimes end up getting stuck in the underside of the fans. Also, re-applying the thermal paste also helps lower the temperature for your CPU and GPU if it has been a while since you've purchased it.

My MSI laptop (GV62 8re) with i7 8750h + GTX1060 6gb has been running very hot since I bought it. When gaming, it easily touches 95-98 degrees. Haven't had issues with it though, and it doesn't even seem to throttle. Recently, I changed the max CPU usage to 90% and that helped a lot. I got max 70 degrees atter that. However a few days later it just went back to 90 degrees again, still at 90% cpu.
