Here's something most people don't know...
Your "saltwater spinning reel" isn't actually made for saltwater.
Or at least this is true for many of you.
Many reels that we use are just "regular" spinning reels that we saltwater anglers have fallen in love with.
So here's the question: what's the difference between a bass reel and a saltwater reel?
And are there any regulations or ratings?
That's exactly what we talked about in this eye-opening video with all of the Salt Strong Fishing Coaches.
Here's what we covered:
- Whether or not you actually need a "saltwater spinning reel" (and what makes a saltwater spinning reel)
- The surprising pros and cons of a saltwater resistant reel
- How the most popular brands compare on this topic (Daiwa vs. Shimano vs. Penn)
- Which reels are our fishing coaches' favorites
- And much more
If you're a spinning reel nerd like we are, then you're going to love this video!
Have any questions about saltwater spinning reels?
What's your favorite reel?
Let us know down in the comments!
And check out the blog post here for a time-stamped list of what we covered and links to other videos and reels: bit.ly/3sY3dTw

I've seen this subject come up numerous times, even among some of my friends that grew up fishing saltwater. They buy a reel and then bad mouth it when it doesn't hold up for 12 months. But that old Penn 712z lasted 20 years. Maintenance is more important than ever, especially since the tolerances have gotten tighter and people expect silky smooth and whisper quiet. The hard part is when you see companies like Daiwa and Shimano produce reels that require special tools and lubricants to service the reel. Magnetic oil for instance. Nonetheless, great video and hopefully a bunch of people will realize that most of the gear at the local Academy or Dick's is really made for Freshwater or is just a "disposable" reel.

I don't care who makes the reel or what it's rated for, I open every reel up straight out of the box and re-grease and re-oil it. You'd be amazed how poorly even the more expensive reels are lubricated from the factory. Staying on top of preventative maintenance is key with any object in a salt environment.

Great video! I have been analyzing the same thing. I am a loyal Shimano customer and some of their "Freshwater" reels still mention saltwater capabilities in the description. I agree with the Sedona comment...I have one from 2004, and it is still going strong here in the Mississippi Gulf Coast. best quality for value.. now I am a big NASCI fan. But plan to get a couple Vanford C3000s for my primary reel.

awesome content. happy to get to nerd out about the specifics of the "SW" in spinning reels. I'm no expert but I'm gonna agree with one of the panelists in that the "SW" reels are mostly for offshore applications? Also on the Shimano Japan website most of the reels specify under 'technical characteristics' as "海水 OK" which translates to "Salt Water OK" which tells me that most of the reels are saltwater suitable.

get the old penn spinfishers from the ss series that where still made in the us and do some upgrades to bearings, line roller (from the newer versions), ht100 drag, new handle, and infinite antireverse (machining needed) and you got the best reel in the world that will never break and you can use the smallest 420ss for ultralight fishing but it can handle fishes that a shimano or daiwa that are twice the size would struggle with 😂😁 its really the best reel ever made 😁 my best reels so far was a shimano vanquish and i had a stella for a week and the peen just feels supirior to them you just got that confidence of knowing its not going to fail at any point and the maitenence is really easy on it 😁 i would highly reccomend buying one if you can get it for under 100$

While i don't fish in the salt, i fish in the worlds finest sand... I have ruined 3 UL reels trying to fish from rivers (in AZ) and am looking for a light and sealed reel (1000-2000 size) ruined a daiwa fuego piscifun carbon X (it was only $30) and a daiwa regal LT. While i understand that sand and salt water are massively different (particle size) i am looking for a sand resistant reel (about $200 if it will last more than 6 months) I only fish in freshwater. I have a Nasci and Stradic FL and am afraid to take them into the sand. They are also 3000 and 4000 size, so they are a bit large/heavy for my ultralight backpack (my river is about a 2 mile walk from the road)

Interesting take on the Vanford vs Ballistic. But what about when it comes down to maintenance of the Ballistic and if you ever need to replace the Magseal fluid? The Magseal fluid doesn't seem easily obtainable and seems like it might be cost prohibitive if it is. Also, Daiwa parts don't seem as readily or easily obtainable in general compared to Shimano. I brought my Fuego to Hawaii and it think I dunked it or had saltwater intrusion at some point and you could feel a difference in the retrieve after. That said, I use my Fuego often in the surf and like it a lot. But I need to get some Magseal oil for it haha. Almost forgot about the dreaded "screw of death" that Daiwa employs in many of their reels - I ran into one of these on the old Coastal 153H I tore down. I think there's one on the Fuego too.

@@aaronhiggs I actually just tore my Fuego LT down over the weekend. Fished it on Saturday and noticed it was 'squeaky' retrieving. Opened it up and found the magnet in the magseal plate/cover ((part J68-8201) corroding and deteriorating. The replacement part will likely cost $15+ and I'm not even sure where to purchase the Magseal fluid at a reasonable cost. It's on Ebay and costs like $50~!!! Never liked the term "fresh" or "salt" water reel. By nature, all reels will corrode, just matter of time and how it's sealed/maintained. My oldest reel that I still use is a freshwater reel that never saw freshwater. BTW, IPX means nothing in moving parts. The rating is based on sealed stagnant pressure and definitely and certainly not saltwater condition.

Why in the world would I, as a recreational fisherman, spend over 500$ on a fishing reel when my penn pursuit and Penn fierce have lasted plenty of time, caught plenty of fish, and still function just fine?...
