I just learned that he was inspired to write this music while watching a 1968 Italian "Spaghetti" Western. To quote the narrator from the documentary "Is that Black Enough for You", "Isaac Hayes was so inspired by Sergio Leone’s film Once Upon a Time In the West - the perversion of Henry Ford’s character, regarded as a stalwart of White decency, and Woody Strode’s performance - that he went on to create this piece". Who knew?

On this day in 1969 {August 30th} "Walk On By" b/w "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" by Isaac Hayes entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and both sides made the Top 40. "Walk On By" peaked at #30 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100, while "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" reached #37 & stayed on the Top 100 for 8 weeks. Dionne Warwick's version of "Walk On By" peaked at #6 on the Top 100 in 1964, while Glen Campbell took "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" to #26 in 1967. R.I.P. Mr. Hayes {1942 - 2008}.

From one of the most understated movies of the era....a chilling testimony of what actually happened to brothers (Black and White) as a result of that fucked up escapade in South East Asia.....Larenz Tate should have at least been nominated for an Oscar....

HIi sir! My name is Isaac James Martinez, I'm named after you 🩷 Well technically my dad was named after you, and I after him, but ultimately thank you for bringing laughter, love, and music to my life.

Although Dead Presidents a sad ending, I still like it. And they couldn't have picked a better song than this for the soundtrack.

August 20th: Happy birthday Soul-Funk-Disco Singer-songwriter-Composer-Arranger-Musician Isaac Lee Hayes Jr. / "Black Moses" (1942-2008) Academy Award: Best Original Song ("Shaft"), multiple-Grammy Award winner, Golden Globe, Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award; one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of this (and perhaps) any generation. Isaac Hayes passed away on August 10,2008, one day after Comedian Bernie Mac, his co-star in "Soul Men,' it was the last film for both. thank you for sharing your gifts. RIP... thank you for the upload, funky4fingers. Blessings
